Book Description
This book is designed for human resources managers and directors of personnel who are concerned with labor productivity. It gives benchmarks and gap analyses used to gauge a company's performance vis--vis firms competing firms in the same sector, at the global level. In particular, this report covers CISCO SYSTEMS, INC., SAN JOSE, USA. With the globalization of markets, greater foreign competition, and the reduction of entry barriers, it becomes all the more important to benchmark a company's performance against other firms on a worldwide basis. Doing so, however, is not an obvious task. First, one needs to find firms competing in the same sector. Second, one needs to control for exchange rate volatility. Finally, one needs use comparable financial standards. This report overcomes these issues and gives full human resources benchmarks vis--vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover labor-asset ratios, labor-liability ratios, and labor-income ratios. Since our reports are printed on demand, the figures available are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 updates are produced each year).

I guess it's "too simple" to work..trading has to be much more complicated or it just won't work.......2007-06-23
This book is definitely responsible for "turning the light on" for me. Granted, if you're the type of person who's pulse quickens when they see the young Metrosexuals with Faux Hawks in suits on the Tradestation ads or if you get butterflies in your stomach when you go to a broker and use their "pro" tools and "cleanest ticks", then you will probably find this book not up to your *ahem* level. There is no 3 bar break super reversals or astrological timing galactic somersaults or anything of that nature...nope, nothing here but pure, workable logic that "boring" people like me can appreciate.
This is an excellent book in which you are encouraged to use the information as a basis for your own methodology. It gives you a framework for how the markets ebb and flow. I bought this book when it first was released and didn't get much out of it, as I was too new to understand that Keep It Simple Stupid is the key to success...After reading it a few times more recently with experience under my belt, it just clicked. And the light's not turning off anytime soon.
Sadly, many individuals say that books like this are "too basic" or "strictly for beginners because it merely discusses what trends are". Most of the time, they don't know what they are even talking about themselves.....People all too often skip straight past the logical basic foundations of trading and dive headlong into the fancy stuff, hoping to fill the holes in their trading with gizmos and bizarre theories....that's absolutely fine with me. Keep doing it, in the meantime I'll be sitting back with the "simple" knowledge gained from this book and using the money I took from you to go on vacation.
Highly HIGHLY recommended. Thanks Mr Dukas for writing this excellent book.
Simple yet powerful.......2007-06-17
It's a sign of a novice trader when they bash books that present core concepts of trading/investing rather than fluff such as "revolutionary" indicators, or "new concepts in trading." Yes, this book is short and simple, but it presents a concept that most wannabe traders totally miss. Dukas shows you an elegant but simple strategy of providing a framework to price action (similar to Stan Weinstein) that, if anything, serves as a guide post for your trading decisions. This was what I have been missing. Does Dukas illustrate specific trading setups in the book? No. He provides the framework and then leaves it up to you to design a approach that fits you. If you don't want to do the work to design your own strategy then you shouldn't be in this game. The more years that I get behind my belt, the more I realize that 99% of the trading books out there are useless. Sure, they are packed full of pretty graphs or trading setups, but they don't get you to think for yourself and help you truly understand what drives price movement. In summary, if you're looking for a framework to guide your trading decisions, then this is the book for you. Highly recommended!
Very Insightful book for traders.......2007-04-11
Wow, this book is great!!!...I read it in two days because it was very helpful in explaining the boom and bust cycles of financial instruments...I have read 200 to 300 books on the stock market and this one is definately one of the best.
Of a Kind.......2007-02-23
This is an interesting book. This book gives definitions of bull and bear markets and their phasis in exchanges, and suggests certain trading methods in each phase. You may take it or leave it, but in any case, this book is an anjoyable read.
10 minute book, no revelations.......2006-11-30
I'm a day trader and trade stocks, ETF's, and options. I always looking for new ideas to help me screen for "buy candidates." I thought this book might have some new twist on technical indicators. When I opened it up, I was disappointed. I literally read the book, cover to cover in 10 minutes. I went though it quickly because the material was so simple. Basically the theory in the book is as follows: 6 phases of a stock. Recovery Phase (50SMA
< 200SMA, Close > 50SMA), Accumulation phase (Close > 50SMA, Close > 200SMA, 50SMA
< 200 SMA),etc.... same simple concept for the other four phases. Then for the grand finale, the last chapter "Putting it all together"...drum roll.... Was a review of the previous six chapters.. happy holidays.

Book Description

Book Description
"Science is rooted in conversations," wrote Werner Heisenberg, one of the twentieth century's great physicists. In Quantum Dialogue, Mara Beller shows that science is rooted not just in conversation but in disagreement, doubt, and uncertainty. She argues that it is precisely this culture of dialogue and controversy within the scientific community that fuels creativity.
Beller draws her argument from her radical new reading of the history of the quantum revolution, especially the development of the Copenhagen interpretation. One of several competing approaches, this version succeeded largely due to the rhetorical skills of Niels Bohr and his colleagues. Using extensive archival research, Beller shows how Bohr and others marketed their views, misrepresenting and dismissing their opponents as "unreasonable" and championing their own not always coherent or well-supported position as "inevitable."
Quantum Dialogue, winner of the 1999 Morris D. Forkosch Prize of the Journal of the History of Ideas, will fascinate everyone interested in how stories of "scientific revolutions" are constructed and "scientific consensus" achieved.

A revolution.......2006-06-26
A major sociological question is: how can we make a revolution?.
This question is adressed by Mara Beller in "Quantum Dialogue", which can be seen as a new way to look at the problem of social change beyond Kuhn's "Structure". Indeed, it is well written, informative and, sometimes, technical. But I believe technicalities are at the heart of physics, so, it is necessary to grasp them.
I recommend this reading for all physicists, sociologists and anarchists.
A must read book on history of Quantum Physics.......2001-06-20
This is the book to read all about the development of Quantum Theory day by day with quotations from individuals, excerpts from theor correspondances. It is shocking to read those geniousess vacciliatting on some concepts. I trust the author is providing actual data but most interesting was to read that Bohr was thinking about the factor on his Energy states factor and his decision to make it one half to match zero state energy. Mr. Heisenberg through out concepts not knowing what he was saying. This is the impression I got from the readings.Author has ceratinly knows a lot about the theory itself and makes clarifications to the arguments that they were shooting to each other. This book is a gem. This book is not for someone who does not know at least a littel about the theory itself otherwise you miss the story behind the correspondances.Recommend to all who is interested in the development of modern physics.
A paradigm shift in the making--terrific!.......2000-04-21
Mara Beller has written an exciting and very valuable portrait of physicists engaged in making a scientific revolution--the quantum revolution. Beller lets us see Niels Bohr and his colleagues as they worked to win general acceptance of the Copenhagen formulation of quantum physics through ongoing dialogues, in print, correspondence, and talks, with fellow scientists. She argues that Bohr et alia prevailed, not because their view is scientifically more robust but because they were more skillful in what amounts to public relations within the scientific community--they were more effective in selling their views. Beller recreates the controversies surrounding the development of quantum theory and the acceptance of the Copenhagen formulation as "the" established view in great detail. She supports her arguments with a mass of gracefully employed archival and published documentation, including some real gems--that one of Bohr's major papers was published with two pages reversed, and nobody noticed, for example. This book is a delight to read, and an important and absorbing book, for everyone interested in how scientists develop, advocate, debate, and come to accept a new theory. I have been skeptical about work in history and philosophy of science, but this book convinces me that the Science Wars are way off base--Beller clearly is knowledgeable about the physics, and about the scientific community too. Read this book especially if you are a scientist, and see if you don't recognize yourself and some of your colleages!

The Homecoming (Wonderfully Illustrated Short Pieces)
ASIN: 1887368868 |
Book Description
Ray Bradbury didn't sit one down day and decide to write his classic novel Fahrenheit-451. As with Something Wicked This Way Comes Bradbury's tale of censorship had its roots years earlierin at least 9 short stories or novellas. While published in 1953 the genesis of F-451 can be traced back to 1944. Over the next several years Bradbury tinkered with the idea in a number of short storiesa few that have been collected a number of times, some that appeared just once and others that have remained unpublished . . . Until now.
Gauntlet's upcoming Match to Flame: The Fictional Paths of Fahrenheit-451 traces the roots of F-451 in Bradbury's earlier fiction. Edited by Donn Albright, the book is a must for those who have marveled at F-451. The centerpiece of the book, is of course, "The Fireman" a novella published in Galaxy `51 (1951). Copies of Galaxy `51 on eBay (when they appear) sell for $150 and up.
Signed by Bradbury, this is bound to become one of his classics both for scholars looking into the history of F-451, collectors interested in obscure and unpublished Bradbury material that will not see publication anywhere else, and readers of great fiction. The Lettered edition, as always, will contain a wealth of additional material including the previously unpublished short story "The Castle."
Customer Reviews:
A Brilliant Masterwork and an Excellent Value!.......2007-08-23
There is hardly a literate human alive who has not read Ray Bradbury's landmark novel FAHRENHEIT 451. This is Bradbury's brilliant novel about the repression of ideas and society's docile acceptance of the death of truth. FAHRENHEIT 451 is indisputably one of the most influential books of the 20th century, and there is no doubt that it will remain a subject of study and discussion in the centuries to come. The story centers upon a fireman named Guy Montag, who is experiencing a personal spiritual crisis that centers upon the nature of his job in which he does not extinguish fires. No, Guy Montag starts fires; he burns books, extinguishing ideas. And it's not as though the semi-dystopian near-future society that is the setting of this novel is infuriated, or even upset. The people have something far more alluring to turn their attention toward: Television. They've forgotten all about being individuals and rush in herds toward televised drivel that distracts them from the more mundane events of the reality occurring all around them, like war. The books, and the ideas between the covers, perished nearly unnoticed. MATCH TO FLAME is an important, amazing chronicle of how FAHRENHEIT 451 came to be and how a literary genius crafted one of the most important novels ever published. F-451 did not come about easily. It was an ongoing process that is clearly defined in MATCH TO FLAME, which includes a number of short stories, a novella, fragments, letters, and so much more. The reader will find stories ranging from classic horror ("Pillar of Fire") to science fiction ("The Mad Wizards of Mars") to dark fantasy ("Carnival of Madness"). Mr. Bradbury made deep explorations into the subject of individual freedom of thought years before writing a heart-stopping novella titled "The Fireman", which was eventually expanded into FAHRENHEIT 451. It is quite interesting to note that Mr. Bradbury's novel foresaw flat-panel, wall-mounted color televisions at a time when few Americans even owned a newfangled black and white TV. I am awestruck, in particular with the forward written by Mr. Bradbury's friend, fellow fiction giant and intellectual contemporary, Richard Matheson. Mr. Matheson includes personal letters from and to Mr. Bradbury and, in one prescient letter to Mr. Bradbury, Mr. Matheson considers how to best present the current problems of the world (c. 1951) in fictional form; i.e.: "Race prejudice, chauvinism, blind capitalism, warped Christianity, impossible arrogance." Well. MATCH TO FLAME, like the novel that inspired it, FAHRENHEIT 451, is a book for the ages that should be read, studied, deliberated and argued now and forever, because the subject of personal freedom of expression and the tyranny of censorship will always be with us. How can we keep the jackboots off our necks? By remaining cognizant and vigilant at all times. Here's the perfect tool for keeping the Mind Police at bay: click on the cover and get yourself a copy of MATCH TO FLAME. It's a bit more expensive than the usual volumes I recommend, but this is a signed and limited event, and your investment will be well rewarded with an amazing personal chronicle of a legendary writer working at the very top of his formidable literary powers. With fabulous jacket collage art, whimsical interior art by the author, and an insightful Introduction by William Touponce, Professor of English and Director of the Center for Ray Bradbury Studies at the University of Indianapolis. Bonus: the signed/limited edition includes a never-before-published Ray Bradbury short story, "The Castle". And as for the price, please consider that a Ray Bradbury signature is incredibly collectible and nearly impossible to obtain. This volume is for serious collectors who recognize that the value of their investment is destined to increase enormously over a very short amount of time.
Would Have Been A Great Book At One Third The Price.......2007-08-06
Match to Flame is a great collection of Ray Bradbury stories tracking an interesting evolution that ultimately ends with Fahrenheit 451. I quite enjoyed reading it and I am sure that I will go back to it again. If I had payed $30 for it I would give it 4 or 5 stars, but I cannot separate the quality of the stories from the fact that I payed more than 3 times that amount. Is there anything about it that would justify a price of $100 or more? The construction and quality of the book itself is the same as any other hardcover and of less quality than many (the somewhat thin covers reminded me a little of the hardcover books I used to get almost 30 years ago from the Science Fiction Book Club). The paper seems to be of high quality but there are no color illustrations or pictures. In addition the book needs to be proofread again. I have come across numerous spelling and other errors, which is shameful in a book that costs as much as this one. What supposedly justifies the high cover price is the fact that this is a signed limited edition (750 copies only) first edition. As far as the Ray Bradbury signature is concerned Ray has always been extremely generous about signing anything that anyone has asked him to sign. I think this is commendable of him to accommodate his fans this way, but it also means that the Bradbury signature is not exactly rare. I mean no offense by this but I think that soon after Ray passes on if someone puts a small stack of books by his hand they may get signed simply out of natural reflex :-) . So that leaves only that the book is so expensive because only 750 copies were printed, simply the law of supply and demand created by the publisher! Sure - the publisher will say that the book is a good investment and will only appreciate in value. But suppose an avid Bradbury fan doesn't want an investment? Suppose he simply wants to read this collection. I guess he is out of luck. Suppose he simply doesn't have $100 to spend on the book. Again, he is out of luck and will not read these stories. The publisher could also have made a much less expensive unsigned edition available in a run of a few thousand copies, but he chose not to. Hypothetically suppose I get Ray Bradbury to agree to let me publish some of his unpublished stories in a limited editon hardcover (no different from any other hardcover which would retail for $25) with a print run of 100 copies. Can I sell them for $500 each? Probably. In my opinion all of this goes completely against the way Ray has accumulated the vast majority of the fans that he has. I was introduced to the works of Ray Bradbury in the mid 70's and I think my story is similar to many others. After I was captivated by Dandelion Wine I wanted to read and own everything else the man published. Being 15 years old this meant buying all the paperbacks. What a great time this was - finding these paperbacks (most in used condition), with their wonderfully illustrated covers, and devouring these stories when they meant the most to me. Even now when I'm in a used book store I automatically check out the Bradbury books to nostalgically enjoy the various paperback covers that are out there. After all these years going back to the couple dozen Bradbury paperbacks on my shelf is worth more to me than a shelf full of overpriced first editions.
A real luxury item for Bradbury fans.......2006-07-25
One of the first thing's you'll notice looking at this page is the fact that this book costs...well...$110. Which, you might say, is a little absurd for a newly published book of short stories and essays, no matter how nice. Well, that's probably true, so I wish I could tell you it was really worth every penny. What I can tell you is that it really is a fascinating book for Ray Bradbury fans. Tracing the path to his best-known classic is a very unique literary journey and there are a lot of previously unpublished gems in here. It does not rank up there as some of Bradbury's best work, but again, any devoted fan will be fascinated. Specialty publisher Gauntlet Press knows just how far some fans will go to get this stuff and they certainly do milk every penny from them with their many limited edition titles.
