As guarantee products are popping up all over the global banking and insurance markets, it is absolutely essential to ensure that the proper financial values are upheld in order to avoid many of the problems that the North American market has faced. 'Investment Guarantees' does a wonderful job of describing these risks in simple enough terms that the pages can be quoted to both financial and non financial people. A very powerful read for those looking to undersand the value of guarantees that are placed on accumulation type insurance products.

          Book Description

The Genetic Code and the Origin of Life celebrates the 50 th anniversary of the discovery of the double helix. This book combines two complementary approaches to address the question of the development of the Genetic Code. The first chapters provide general perspectives into the most important features of the evolution of life and the code. The rest of the chapters provide detailed analyses on the features and evolution of independent components of the code. Thus the book combines a general overview with detailed descriptions. This volume provides a general reference for the academic audience interested in evolution and, simultaneously, consolidates our most detailed knowledge on the biological characteristics of the components of the genetic code.

          Book Description

With official genomic blueprints now available for hundreds of species, and thousands more expected in the near future, the field of biology has been forever transformed. Such readily accessible data have encouraged the proliferation of adaptive arguments for the evolution of gene and genomic features, often with little or no attention being given to simpler and more powerful alternative explanations. By integrating the central observations from molecular biology and population genetics relevant to comparative genomics, Lynch shows why the details matter.

Presented in a nontechnical fashion, at both the population-genetic and molecular-genetic levels, this book offers a unifying explanatory framework for how the peculiar architectural diversity of eukaryotic genomes and genes came to arise. Under Lynch's hypothesis, the genome-wide repatterning of eukaryotic gene structure, which resulted primarily from nonadaptive processes, provided an entirely novel resource from which natural selection could secondarily build new forms of organismal complexity.

4 out of 5 stars Original view on evolution.......2007-08-13

This book offers a non-conventional view on biological evolution, particularly that of animals, including humans. Solid molecular and population genetic analysis reveal that evolution of higher eukaryotes are realised predominantly by genetic drift of pseudo neutral mutations rather than by Darwinian type selection mechanisms. Authors' concept also might be applied to explain so far less discussed issue on the direction of evolution - from primitive forms towards more developed organisms.

            Book Description

This is the first book addressing origin and evolution of new gene functions. Although interest in evolutionary novelties can be traced back to the time of Darwin, the appreciation and systematical experimental pursuit of the origin and evolution of new gene functions did not appear until the early years of the last decade. Sixteen chapters from pioneers and leading scientists in this newly emerging field provide overviews of how new genes with novel functions originated and evolved. Broad issues related to new gene evolution are analyzed, ranging from molecular mechanisms to population genetics to theoretical conjecture of the minimum building blocks for protein diversity. Both insightful reviews and new original results of theoretical and experimental analyses were presented, which are valuable for researchers and students in further pursuit of the fascinating field of new gene evolution.

              Book Description

In the years since the publication of Susumu Ohno's 1970 landmark book Evolution by gene duplication tremendous advances have been made in molecular biology and especially in genomics. Studies of genome structure and function prerequisite to testing hypotheses of genome evolution were all but impossible until recent methodological advances.

This book evaluates newly generated empirical evidence as it pertains to theories of genomic evolutionary patterns and processes. Tests of hypotheses using analyses of complete genomes, interpreted in a phylogenetic context, provide evidence regarding the relative importance of gene duplication. The alternative explanation is that the evolution of regulatory elements that control the expression of and interactions among genes has been a more important force in shaping evolutionary innovation.

This collection of papers will be of interest to all academic and industry researchers working in the fields of molecular biology, biotechnology, genomics and genome centers.

5 out of 5 stars Who knew physicists had entertaining lives?.......2006-09-22

I'm a bit biased because my grandfather was Carl Anderson's first cousin and never knew about him. I was pleased to find this book and learn more about one of my more famous relatives.

For what would be called a geek today, Carl Anderson's life was quite interesting. The discussion of physics is minimal so the title shouldn't scare the casual reader away. But this is a simple autobiography of a man who just happened to be a great scientist. He faced all the basic problems we all face. For example, what do you do when you get the telegram that you've won the Nobel Prize but you don't have enough cash to get to Stockholm to pick it up?

It's a fast and enjoyable read. I'm sure my 85 year old mother will enjoy it as much as I did. Then it's into the hands of my high school junior son who wants to be a physicist. It's a good peek into what a physicist actually does.

                    5 out of 5 stars Interesting Reading!.......2006-07-25

I am the daughter-in-law of Carl Anderson. Per my request, Carl wrote his memoirs for our children. He wrote it in a way that everyone of all ages will be able to understand the meaning of physics. It is a personal story of his life from childhood to his discovery and beyond. The book is inspiring to young and old alike. It is a story of determination and perservance in a era when young scientists had to develop and create experiments using very primitive means. This book allows the reader to better understand the world and mind of a famous scientist.

                      Book Description

A highly exciting adventure story featuring James Schuyler Grim, better known as Jimgrim. Jimgrim is an American secret service agent employed by the British and stationed in Jerusalem. With him are his faithful sikh shadow, Narayan Singh, as well as Ramsden, an American, and Jeremy Ross, an ex-soldier of the Australian forces, both eager for a fight of any kind. This opportunity soon presents itself, as the ambitions of the French in Syria arouse the enmity of King Feisal of the Arabs. For his aid in WWI, the Allies promised Feisal the kingship of Syria, Palestine, and Trans-Jordania. This promise they have not kept, however, and the French are out to discredit or kill the Arab chieftain. To further their ends, an order is forged, ostensibly from Feisal to his Arab adherents, which calls for a massacre of the Jews in Jerusalem.

When this message is intercepted, Jimgrim swings into action. With Ramsden and Ross as volunteers, he matches wits and weapons with the powerful plotters who are financed by the French.

With a considerable amount of little-known historical truth worked into the background, Affair in Araby is one of the most colorful, fast-moving, and exciting of Talbot Mundy's "Jimgrim" stories.
