Customer Reviews:
Changed my company.......2007-05-14
I handed this book to my project managers and am already experiencing a ground swell of blessing. The late great Larry Burkett lays the prinicles out in an easy to understand and thoughtful way. I would highly, highly recommend this book if you are interested in doing Business the way God intended.
A MUST READ BEFORE YOU START A BUSINESS.......2005-10-26
THE AUTHOR COVERS BUSINESS PRINCIPLES IN A MANNER THAT YOU DONT COVER IN ANY BA OR MBA PROGRAM THAT I EVER HEARD. DEFINETELY WORTH THE READ!
Business By THE Book.......2005-08-10
This book is not for someone wanting to get rich quick! If you are a Christian business owner wanting to run your business according to God's word, this book explains God's word and gives helpful tips to follow through with His word.
A Very Thought Provoking Resource.......2005-07-20
In a world where the current business ideology seems to be about maximizing short term profits, climbing over others, and getting the maximum return possible with the minimal effort or investment Larry Burkett draws a sharp contrast.
Using referenced Biblical principles throughout the book Mr. Burkett outlines what it means to run a business by God's standards. This does not mean becoming a non-profit or lossing money - but it does mean completely changing the way we view the business, our employees and customers, and our role as business leaders. The principles laid out are challenging and often contrary to the advice you are used to hearing.
I found it to be an extremely useful and informative resource that helped me to see how I could not only run a business successfully, but also not sacrifice my concience or ideals. One of the primary tenents of this book is that we are stewards of the resources God gave us, meaning that the money we have and the business we may own ultimately belong to God, not us, and he has entrusted us with them to use in a manner he would approve of. If you are comfortable with this premise I believe you will enjoy the book and find it challenging. If you are not comfortable with this premise you will probably have difficulty accepting the concepts he has outlined.
Interesting with reservations. .......2004-12-13
The book covers many subjects one needs to think about as a Christian in business. It gives advice based on many many actual experiences that he's encountered while counseling including hiring, firing, and many tough convoluted business situations. For many people needing an orientation to general business and the moral dilemmas one faces these are quite fascinating. Just reading them may help you stay out of some real bad business situations and get a feel for what can go wrong. Much of his advice is buried in paragraphs rather than bold lettered or otherwise separated to make it absolutely clear. I do the best I can extracting a small bit of it below that I found somewhat extreme. Overall an interesting read that people fully knowledgeable of the bible and life will find themselves arguing with occasionally. I respectfully question from the 1998 edition:
* Says to tithe from Gross Income (aka income before taxes page 237). Apparently suggests the business should tithe as well as the individual and from Gross "before tax" income. Suggests this in spite of the fact that the individual is already tithing from personal income which includes on stock dividend income which of course means that the business is tithing via the stock owner tithing on the dividends. If no dividends are paid then the tax and tithe are due upon sale since no income is realized until sale. He plainly does not understand or sidesteps the concept of double taxation and income realization of owners though judging from his writing tone I bet he would argue bitterly saying that he does understand this. See for yourself on page 238 and all the rest of Chapter 19. In the bible the Jewish government allowed paying tithe as first fruits but our non-Christian government does not so how can we realistically obey this?
* Suggests the twentieth century tithe is the same as old testament tithe under a biblical government. Problem is the tithe was paid to Mekezdek (spelling?) a priest-&-king and to the old testament church only when the church was acting as the church-&-government yet he says the tithe should not be adjusted in amount today when the church is no longer the government (page 234). Ludicrous.
* Says "If you aren't willing to perform what you vow (promise to do), even at the cost (of loosing) all your material assets, then you have...a spiritual problem (p. 81). So what if you make an honest mistake? Is it to everyone's benefit and does it make God happy that you loose everything trying to pay back what you can't?
* Asserts that Paul's suggestion of women as assistants to men (as Genesis also says) only applies within the church or in some family situations and maybe not in all. He worms around this issue enough to satisfy everyone and as we know you can't satisfy everyone and the bible on this issue. From a practical standpoint he really sets the bible's overall direction to the side on this issue even though underneath it all he may be more conservative than he lets on. Read the book to see for yourself (pages 119, 156).
* The bible translation used isn't named anywhere that I can find and this matters in these days of so many translations and when the translating teams contain many non-Christians who have declared an agenda to change the bible from its original intentions and evolve it to something different to their liking.
* May have confused the suing Christians issue since tells a story of a person not counter suing a person that has proved he is not really a Christian by his constant lying. Certainly you could sue a slanderous stealing non-Christian couldn't you? See page 208. He apparently sees the use of the courts as only a defense to clear their name if the other person waves the "I'm a Christian flag". Again ludicrous, as it is suggested as admirable that a certain business man allows the loss of about $200,000 to avoid suing a previous business associate that was obviously faking Christianity. What happened to treating someone who refuses the counsel of multiple Christians as though that person was a non-Christian (Mathew 18:15 to 18:17)?
Conclusion: Worth reading for those entering business for its story telling style of business situations and problems that one can fall into. The book gives much good advice and should be applauded for tackling tough issues. Deserves a 3 to 5 rating depending on whether you expect the author to be right about everything; this reader did not consider him to be.

Awesome Resource.......2001-01-05
This book was a wonderful resource to use when my college in high school course did its final debate on Civil Rights. Not only was I able to find quotes and views similar to the ones I was supposed to fight for, but I also found the very information my opponents sought after and had it it in my hands to use against them. Without the valuable information in this book I would not have been able to win the debate and score an "a" on my final.

Great Jesuit Estancias. How and why were they built........1999-07-12
The best book I have read to understand the little known economic activities of the Jesuits in Colonial Argentina. You will see how an extraordinary business machinery was working and be able to imagine the real activity behind the walls of the magnificent architecture of the Jesuit Estancias of Cordoba (Santa Catalina, Alta Gracia, Jesus Maria, Candelaria). Required reading for those willing to visit these places.

Very Knowledgeable Author.......2007-04-10
The author is obviously one of the experts in her field. I have found her books (and lectures) very insightful. She has a depth and breadth of knowledge that is thought provoking. I have seen some of her other work and enjoy the way she weaves core facts with light humor in her commentaries.

Book Description
The original properties of mesoporous molecular sieves are so unique that the design of most existing catalysts could be reconsidered. It might indeed be of interest to introduce MMS either as a support or as the active phase, merely on the basis of their high surface areas, narrow pore size distribution and flexibility in composition. The recent literature provides examples of MMS based catalysts of many types such as acid-base solids, supported metals and supported oxides, mixed oxides, anchored complexes and clusters, grafted organic functional groups and others. Examples of all these developments are documented in the present proceedings including some spectacular new proposals. The new metallic (Pt) mesophases are specially worth mentioning because they represent a new approach to producing non-supported highly dispersed metals.
In these proceedings the reader will find feature articles and regular papers from many worldwide groups, covering all aspects of synthesis, physical characterization and catalytic reactivity of MMS and their chemically modified forms. It is actually remarkable that this recent development brought together an even broader spectrum of scientists from traditionally unrelated fields such as those of liquid crystals, surfactants, sol-gels, amorphous oxides and mixed oxides, solid state, adsorbents and heterogeneous catalysts. Obviously, this is a fast-growing research area which triggers the imagination and creativity at the cross-road between material design, molecular surface tailoring and catalytic applications.

Book Description
Apocalypse is D. H. Lawrence‘s last book, written during the winter of 1929–30 when he was dying. It is a radical criticism of our civilisation and a statement of Lawrence’s unwavering belief in man’s power to create ‘a new heaven and a new earth’. Ranging over the entire system of his thought on God and man, on religion, art, psychology and politics, this book is Lawrence’s final attempt to convey his vision of man and the universe. Apocalypse was published after Lawrence’s death, and in a highly inaccurate text. This edition is the first to reproduce accurately Lawrence’s final corrected text on the basis of a thorough examination of the surviving manuscript and typescript. In the introduction the editor has discussed the writing of Apocalypse and its place in Lawrence’s works, its publication and reception, and the significance of Lawrence’s other writings on the Book of Revelation.
Customer Reviews:
An occasional beautiful passage in a generally sterile and fanatic polemic .......2006-06-04
The greatness of Lawrence as a writer is not in question. But in this final work of his , we see a 'visionary ' side which involves a neo- Neitzschean and almost Fascist reading of ' the Book of Revelations'. Lawrence may as other reviewers claim be here most interested in defying a pagan life- affirming tradition against a spiritually dehumanizing Christianity. But the main thrust is in his condemnation, a very strange one indeed, of the poor of the world for their envy of those higher people, the true aristocrats of life. Borrowing a page from Nietzsche's conception of re-sentiment morality he condemns the poor and sees their anger as barren and empty. So too his reading of John of Patmos condemns him for dessicating the life in a false and distorted spiritual vision.
Lawrence's work comes most alive far from theory, in his novels especially but also in his poems.
In terms of pure ideas his contribution , at least in this work, is more negative than anything else.
D.H. Lawrence's revelation.......2000-03-09
Written in response to widespread condemnation of the sexuality and libertine lifestyles presented in his books, Apocalypse was the final attempt by D. H. Lawrence to make himself understood. The modern reader will probably detect a full throttle blitz against the puritanical deacons of the Church of England and his establishment tormentors. Launched from the most contentious and abstruse of the Bible's books, Revelations, Lawrence levels his antipathy at a rigid, superficially moral, life denying exposition of Christian thought. He argues that the confining nature of living the 'good' life in expectation of reward in Heaven cuts to the root of an immensely rich potential for experience and passion presented in the world. He continuously falls back on opaque codices-- of arcane civilizations that he states more fully explored the metaphysical realm. Lawrence divines a heroic age where apparent creation and destiny were seen as integral and complete. Robert Graves's 'The White Goddess' comprehensively analyzes the same mythological, magical architecture, but Lawrence uses it in a much more targeted and critical way.
Lawrence saw the aesthetic brilliance of Revelations as a bridge to a more mysterious, immediate, compelling theology. At the same time he condemns the apocalyptic churches who interpret the book as the evocation of Hell and Judgement, rather than in its potent poetic symbolism. He goes so far as to accuse John of Patmos of not presenting a revelation at all, but of appropriating a truer, more ancient historiography for eccliastical and political reasons. Not above placing his own eccentric opinions of government in this tract, he could be accused of mounting his own pulpit, if with literary distinction. His claim of an affirming devotion to the visible universe as the only 'true' route to the holy can be countered by reading some of the lively writings of Christian ascetics. This treatise, however, is not about them. It is aimed squarely at the convention seeking, socially regulating, sanctimonious attitudes that had censored and prosecuted him. Not surprisingly it did not raise his stock much among his critics, but it is an essential text in understanding the underlying motives behind his works.
Great Last Work and Testament.......2000-02-03
Attacks everything blindly and madly promoted by the dominant ideas of the dominant socio-economic classes and strongest institutionalized influences in the current civilization of inauthenticity and death.
The power of money must go, according to Lawrence, as the power of the sun must return--as it indeed has always been the power of life whether we recognize it or not. Also, the power of blood must be reasserted. As human beings we are connected to all things. However, this perspective is suppressed as it constitutes a threat to the status quo.
Lawrence here sees no salvation in either democracy or western monotheism; but solely in human beings connecting up once again to the universal forces of nature from which come life's vitality.
Fascinating Lawrence "diversions-on-a-theme"........1999-06-28
Although Lawrence's writings are noted for more earthly activities, he shows a surprising knowledge of Biblical matters. In this book he analyzes the last book of the Bible-- Revelations-- and not too favorably at that. I cannot argue with his facts because I am not as familiar with them as as he is. What I find fascinating about this essay-book are his observations on democracy, and especially about life.
The last page or two contain one of his most remarkable and inspiring observations about the individual and his soul. Lawrence often argues that you cannot "save" you soul; you must "live" it. Near the end of this book he writes:
"What man most passionately want is his living wholeness and his living unison, not his own isolate salvation of his "soul." Man wants his physical fulfilment first and foremost, since now, once and once only, he is in the flesh and potent. For man, the vast marvel is to be alive. For man, as for flower and beast and bird, the supreme triumph is to be most vividly, most perfectly alive. Whatever the unborn and the dead may know, they cannot know the beauty, the marvel of being alive in the flesh. The dead may look after the afterwards. But the magnificent here and now of life in the flesh is ours, and ours alone, and ours only for a time. We ought to dance with rapture that we should be alive and in the flesh, and part of the living, incarnate cosmos....I am part of the great whole, and I can never escape. But I can deny my connections, break them, and become a fragment. Then I am wretched."
The most poignant phrase in this passage is "...and ours for a short time only." Lawrence lived a shorter time that most of us will, but in his lifetime his output was as perceptive and prodigious as any author who has ever written. Scattered throughout this book are irritating but illuminating thoughts like: "But a democracy is bound in the end to be obscene, for it is composed of myriad disunited fragments, each fragment assuming to itself a false wholeness, a false individuality. Modern democracy is made up of millions of frictional parts all asserting their own wholeness."
Some people have taken that statement as proof that Lawrence is against democracy. But I consider it a valid danger for democracy, one that is being played out in the press every day. To preserve democracy, the best of all possible forms of government, we have to analyze and try to correct its failings and weaknesses.
Puzzle your way through this book. I hope you will find it as rewarding as I did.
