Book Description
A complete overview of the composition and types of NGOs that have emerged in recent years. Julie Fisher describes in detail the influence these organizations have had on political systems throughout the world and the hope their existence holds for the realization of sustainable development.
Customer Reviews:
A mixed bag.......2003-01-18
Fisher's book does have some interesting information in it but overall the book lacks intellectual rigour and a more hard-nosed and detached approached to her topic.
Still, the book is probably worth a read.
THE PHYSIOLOGY OF THE THIRD WORLD CIVIL SOCIETY.......1998-01-04
is the topic of Julie Fisher's second book Non Governments: NGOs and the political Development of the Third World (Kumarian Press, 14 Oakwood Ave., West Hartford CT 06119-2127 USA; 1998) Fisher does not write in an anatomical metaphor; nor does she use the jargon of complexity theory with its "self-organizing on the edge of chaos." But it is all there. A living body of networking organizations has emerged to fill the niche produced by dysfunctional post-colonial governments. A plethora of unique interdependent organs assuming specialized functions which serve the whole have almost magically become the body that promises better life for the people in developing countries, and the whole Earth. Grassroots Organizations (GROs) formed by the people in remote villages, have risen by the tens of thousand to solve local problems with local skills and local resources. They network horizontally with one another to provide mutual aid. Grassroots Support Organizations (GRSOs) have emerged independently in the cities, capitols and universities to answer their own need for social usefulness by providing information, material and services, to the remote and the disadvantaged GROs. Overseas International NonGovernmental Organizations (INGOs) have recognized the failure of Governments and U.N. run "Development Decades" to provide "direct aid" to the people in their villages. This whole global Civil Society is a new phenomena. It was not planned by the bureaucrats, not even by the participants themselves. It emerged and self-organized as a working whole within the last two decades. It is now composed of hundreds of thousands of new organizations each playing a unique role in the new body politic. Fisher writes with more humility than she deserves. The book is filled with statistics and case studies of this emerging political and social phenomenon in the Third World. Perhaps, like David Korten, who cut his teeth by leading the Third Word movement for self-help development, or like Francis Moore-Lappé, who spent her early years dissecting the myths of Third World hunger, Fisher will next turn her microscope and scalpel to dissecting the emerging Civil Society in the industrial world. For it is the Industrial Culture's transition to Gaian Cultures which is required if human civilization is to continue, and it is our Civil Society which must lead, and is leading, the way.

Highly Recommended!.......2004-06-07
Christopher Culp definitively combines a thorough reference work on company-wide risk management with a sweeping discussion of the best hedging practices. Since this is also a textbook, you'll find the kind of math that would make even Einstein sweat. But, as the author notes, he's written this book for senior managers, so you have a note from the teacher that you can skip the math and statistics if you have a staff for that. Instead, apply your executive thinking skills to absorbing Culp's excellent lessons in risk management theory and practice. We recommend this book to senior managers and directors - in other words, any executives who create, implement or supervise risk management strategies.
Uneven, Academic, and Often Inaccurate.......2004-02-26
This seems to be a digestion of some articles on risk management without the practical experience to make it useful for practicing risk managers.
Forget that much of the theory is dated, the notion of how risk managment works is incorrect. This isn't a good resource. Try the GARP website for better resources.

Amazing book.......2002-02-24
Culp integrated the corporate risk management puzzle with great ability. With a solid theoretical background and valuable pratical insights, this easy-reading book is worth every dollar it costs - a positive NPV for sure. But it is far from an introductory text. You must be well educated in both corporate finance and statistics to maximize your utility from reading mr. culp's text. If you are, it's a must. Otherwise i would suggest you to improve your corpfin and stats skills before getting into The Risk Management Process.
Detail and not for beginners........2001-08-20
This book had more then what I was looking for.
I was looking for a book on general financial risk management theory and processes (especially market risk management). This book gave more then that. It gave me insight on the theories and rationales on the topic.
The coverage extended somewhat beyond financial risks, giving background on risk management to an organisation as a whole.
The structure of the book was easy and logical, first part being the background and theory or risk management as a whole, part two detailing into the maths of risk management, and the last discussing control processes.
One lacking part (which I was looking for) was that it did not discuss in detail the business processes themselves. I may have over expecting it, but the topic seem to have missed out.

Book Description
This graduate text introduces relativistic quantum theory, emphasizing important applications in condensed matter physics. Relativistic quantum theory is the unification of Einstein's theory of relativity and the quantum mechanics of Bohr, Schrödinger and Heisenberg. Beginning with basic theory, the book then describes essential topics. It includes many worked examples and exercises as well as an extensive reference list. This clear account of a crucial topic will be valuable to graduates and researchers working in condensed matter physics and quantum physics.
Customer Reviews:
good for solid state physicists.......2007-09-18
A short paragraph from this book:
"Now the transformation of (7.18) is just a matter of multiplying out the matrices defined in (7.19) in the right order. It takes several pages of algebra, and it is very easy to make mistakes (believe me, I speak from experience). Therefore, I suggest you either do not do it, or, if possible, set it as an exercise for anyone who particularly irritates you."
Now I say, any textbook with this kind of writing can't be too bad. Still, this book is "not" an easy one. It's an invaluable reference for physicists working on magnetic properties from the Dirac theory up, as one reviewer said. Not the best for high-energy oriented, though.
RQM-Paul Strange.......2000-01-25
I have read this book as a physics undergraduate and also since I started my Ph.D. in theoretical physics, and I have found it, unlike other text books, very well written and extremely helpful. It is highly recommendable for undergraduates and the maths is very easy to follow for any science undergraduate or graduate. It is definitely one of the best relativistic quantume mechanics books available.
Relativistic Quantum Mechanics-Paul Strange.......2000-01-25
As an final year undergraduate taking an option in Relativistic quantum Mechanics I found this book invaluable in helping me with the course. It's clear, concise explanations of Relativistic Quantum theories made the whole subject that much easier to get to grips with.
Puts RQM into state-of-the-art solid state physics.......2000-01-12
Already decades ago many excellent books dealing with relativistic quantum mechanics (RQM) have been published. Clearly one of the unique features of the RQM book by P. Strange is that it does not only discuss the general concepts of RQM in (Chapters 1-10), but also describes in a great detail electronic structure and various x-ray spectroscopy theories used in the state-of-the-art research of magnetic materials (Chapters 10-12). Also a student learning quantum mechanics for solid state might feel the relativistic one-dimensional Kronig-Penney model in Chapter 9 quite useful. Interestingly, a relativistic version of the microscopic theory of superconductivity in the framework of the Bogolubov-de Gennes equations has been presented in Chapter 13. A nice extra feature is that the SI system of units has been used throughout the book.
All in all, Relativistic Quantum Mechanics book by P. Strange works as a valuable textbook as well as reference material for graduate students and researchers. It is especially useful for those studying solid state magnetism from microscopic theory viewpoint. Bringing RQM into the context of solid state physics research (Chapters 10-13) is obviously one of the best features of the book.
Relativistic Quantum Mechanics.......1999-12-29
This book starts at a level easily accessible to a final year undergraduate and develops the subject to the level of a researcher in condensed matter physics. I found the book easy to read and instructive. Chapter 9 is particularly good, being entirely devoted to solving several model problems. I thoroughly recommend this book as a clear and well written text.
