With one review, it's easy to get 5 stars. While I don't write too many reviews, I did read this book and felt the average needed to be reflected, not the skew.

This is a remedial book written by academics with very little practical industry knowledge. Reading through the list of "acknowledgements" will give you the idea. Nothing but professors at colleges and universities. Now, there is nothing wrong with a strong academic influence, but when you define Asset Liability Management as (p. 31) "...the management of the net interest margin to ensure its level and riskiness are compatible with the risk/return objectives of the institution" you realize these authors don't have a clue. Really? That's ALM. Managing the NIM? What about duration profile, economic value, VaR, securitization programs, pricing, liquidity profile, ALCO process, forecasted balances, maturity strategies on retail and wholesale funding, risk position, regulatory requirements (read FRB SR 96-13), FAS 133, swap book, vega risk, negative convexity profile, etc. To think it is only about the NIM is juvenille, but very appropriately academic. Moreover, they define the NIM as = Interest income less expense/total assets. No. That isn't correct. So if the objective of ALM is to manage the NIM and you can't get the definition correct, this is probably a problem. The correct view of the NIM is interest income less expense/earning assets or, more ideally, average earning assets. Go read the FFIEC's definition in the Uniform Bank Performance Report (www.ffiec.gov).

Having made these points, I think the book has merit for, again, a very simplistic intro course. One hopes that in any future editions the authors seek to get professional advice before taking to press. They have some good background research and the book could be made really good; however, they need to infuse it with practical details and vision. As is, it is a stale, incomplete and common book. If you want better insights, just read Wilmott, Bessis, Fabozzi, and Hull.

Gardner et.al. review.......2000-08-12

I have not read this edition but I have several earlier editions and will soon have this one. Their books are always state of the art and a must read for institutional risk managers. The text provides numerous comprehensible detailed examples of managing risk at modern financial institutions. Market coverage is also excellent. This one is for anyone who actually has to manage risk. It is not however an intro book for the novice who is looking only for general information.

We studied in a laboratory experiment using stream tanks if two percid prey fish, the perch (Perca fluviatilis) and the ruffe (Gymnocephalus cernuus), can recognize and respond to increased predation risk using odors of two piscivores, the pike (Esox lucius) and the burbot (Lota lota). Burbot is night-active most of the year but pike hunts predominantly visually whenever there is enough light. Perch is a common day-active prey of pike and dark-active ruffe that of burbot. We predicted that besides recognizing the predator odors, the prey species would respond more strongly to odors of the predator which share the same activity pattern. Both perch and ruffe clearly responded to both predator fish odors. They decreased movements and erected the spiny dorsal fins. Fin erection showed clearly the black warning ornamentation in the fin and thus erected fin may function besides as mechanical defense also as warning ornament for an approaching predator. No rapid escape movements were generally observed. Both perch and ruffe responded more strongly to pike odor than to burbot. There were no clear differences in response between day and night. In conclusion, we were able to verify clear predator odor recognition by both prey fish. Both perch and ruffe responded to both predator odors and it seemed that pike forms a stronger threat for both prey species. Despite of diel activity differences both perch and ruffe used the same antipredatory strategies, but the day-active perch seemed to have a more flexible antipredatory behavior by responding more strongly to burbot threat during the night when burbot is active.

These guys are right this book really sucks the explainations were super easy, as well as the sample problems, then the questions you have for the book were really hard, i'm struggling with this book, i strongly suggest people buy the other edditions of this book, they are much better explained and more percise, this one is just old, and not a good book to learn physics from.

PS: Anyone knows where i can get the solutions to this book? My school is using this book to teach physics, and i had no choice but to learn from this book, and i'm sturggling on these questions, so if anyone knows the solutions, PLEASE SAVE ME !!!

If it can't be simplified, you don't understand it........2000-07-01

In an honors-level physics course at my high school here in the Bay Area, the largest number of complaints regarding the course was the book. The Fundamentals of Physics: A Senior Course remains unnecessarily wordy and imprecise in its explanations; in many cases, I had found apt substitutes for physics when I could not understand the reading material. The descriptions were not advanced, but poorly explained; the equation simplifications were unclear and many of the example problems were simply too easy. Look elsewhere.

Run away from this book !!!.......1999-05-30

This manual appears to have been written to suit the OA (senior high school) physics program in Ontario, Canada. There is only one edition to this book (1987).

Unlike most physics textbooks (Tipler, Serway, Resnick, Giancoli...), this one contains serious "knowledge" and "comprehension" mistakes.

For example, the author describes incorrectly Cosmic Rays (they do not include X-rays, as stated in the texbook). Also, he has the Coulomb as the basic electric unit ( incorrect...it is the Ampere). Elsewhere, his description of the electric potential in an example is such that one wonders if he understands what it is.

Perhaps what worries me most is that many schools are still using this textbook, and that most teachers teaching physics are not specialized in the field ( i.e., no degrees in physics), thus may very well propagate those very mistakes.
