Development may be best understood in terms of the interplay among capital accumulation, the state and class. Subject to globalizing structures, classes are examined in light of their interactions with culture, especially gender, religion, and ecology. Case studies about Brazil, the newly industrializing Asian countries, China, and Mozambique reveal three possibilities for overcoming underdevelopment by joining, leaving or weaving through global capitalism. The conclusions do not fail to present specific principles upon which policies can be based.

Lack of Facts, Full of Attacks.......2005-11-03

Prof. Mittelman uses literature as a weapon against all the good ideas that could be used to help bring millions of people out of poverty. The purpose of this book (and his others as well) is to claim that neoliberalism is bad and that America and the West is evil. His attacks are not based on fact and cites distant history as reason for current problems with the global economy. Instead of focusing on how we can bring about change and make life better for those living on less than a dollar a day, he is more concerned with making America look bad. It is funny that he makes his money on the heals of global capitalism (the very capitalism that he denounces) in Washington, DC (the city that represents Western imperialism and evil according to the Prof). This book should only be cited as a neo-Marxist text damning the ritheous path of neo-liberalism. Less books like Prof. Mittelman's will only help the debate move towards how we can help the poor.

Bankruptcy and child support do not make the top 10 among most enjoyable topics, but when you need to know there's no substitute for accessible, understandable information. You could pay a lawyer $200 to learn the differences between guardianships, conservatorships, and power of attorney, or you could read chapter 7. You may still need a lawyer, but Johnson's guide lays the foundation so you understand the basics of legalese, putting you in a more informed position to make the most important of life's decisions.

One of the Great American Poets.......2005-02-01

This collection includes most of Cullen's major works and lots of his lesser known writings that provide insight into the poet's life and mind that fans like me will appreciate. I loved reading Cullen's accounts of lesser-known aspects of his life like teaching English in school and deciding the course would be on writing verse. Students were initially appalled and frightened, but Cullen clearly helped them bring out the best in themselves.

I have never understood why Cullen has been out of fashion for at least fifteen years now. When I bring up his name in discussions of the Harlem Renaissance, people often look at me either like I have just sprouted a second head or like I am deliberately citing some obscure figure to show how much I know. I am flabbergasted that no collections of his work are currently in print. The introduction to this book talks about how Cullen ran afoul of Langston Hughes. It seems that in the twenty-first century we should not let our love for one of these great poets keep us from appreciating the other.

The introduction also mentions a critic of Cullen who complained that the poet "made the banal seem beautiful." Huh? Isn't that what poetry is all about--finding the beauty in everyday things?

It has also been said that Cullen only produced a handful of truly great poems. Maybe so, but the same is true of his contemporary Hughes and his role model Keats. Readers, I strongly recommend doing whatever you can to get a copy of this book. Publishers, what is wrong with you? Put Countee Cullen back in print!
