Fascinating .......2004-12-13

The book chronicles tidy snapshots of the lives and careers of 4 different men whose influence in corporate regulation remains unrivaled. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on Brandeis. It is terribly unfortunate to contemporary American society that a man like Justice Louis Brandeis is not still alive and a sitting judge with the Supremes. Brandeis's intellect and legacy puts the 9 slugs currently sitting on the bench to shame.

Good but could be better.......2003-08-18

Government regulation of business is always a topic of controversy, but few people know anything about its origins. This book provides a history of the origins of government regulation in the US, by specifically focusing on four important individuals and how they shaped US regulations. Though they are important, their influence was primarily through the executive and judicial branches of the federal government. The book should have included a great legislator along with the four individuals it focused on.

The book is tedious and dry, but not difficult to read. The topic matter is well explained with lots of references, but a lot of text could (and should) have been replaced with charts, graphs, flowcharts, and timelines. I would not recommend this book as an introductory text to government regulations, but more for the well-read observer.

This book is very misleading.......2007-04-24

Generally speaking, some tips here work, some not so much, whilst others are good for a laugh.

The only situation where I found this book can be useful is when you have debt up to your a#s and need to pay it off fast. Then this book will be a good book for you to read. Reason: any money you can put toward debt reduction represents 100% risk free and tax free return on your investment (much like a strip bond). This could include mortgage debt as well.

In the real world this book is less than practical. For example, the book recommends invest your spare cash at a mutual fund. This is where you could get killed if you just blindly throw money at your fund without knowing what you are doing. How would you feel if you cut off the cap of your tooth paste to save a couple of penies, then at the end of a month finds out that you just lost 5% of your net worth in your mutual fund ?? If you are like most people I know, you might say something like this: well, I haven't lost any money because I have not sold, then a month later, you find out you lost another 3% ?? Say if I tell you we are going into a bear market, do you have the courage to short the market ?? how much are you willing to risk in your investment ?? What about giving to your local charities ?? THESE ARE THE REALITIES, folks, not how many pennies you can saved. Get used to it. The fact is, a skillful investor and / or trader can make the money 10 times more, much more so than the technics presented in this book.

Not worth it.......2007-02-05

I don't usually spend my time writing reviews, but after purchasing this book from a thrift store, I had to warn others.
I am always looking for books to teach me more ways to be frugal. I thought that with 1001 tips, there may be something for me to use.

Yikes. I couldn't even read the whole thing. When I read Marry someone rich, and Use your vacuum bags three times, I gave up.

While this may help people who never heard of the term frugal, for others who naturally practice frugality, the book is a waste of time.

A Great Book for Someone who Really wants to start Saving.......2006-10-19

I was just telling a co-worker about a book I read in 1992 that changed my life and was the beggining of my wealth building story, and I went on Amazon for kicks to see if it was still listed, and here it is...1001 Ways to Cut Expenses". I am writing some 14 years later to let you know that as a 27 year old who had worked 3 years in NYC and living on negative cash flow versus my salary ($29k at the time out of college and about $50,000 at the time I read this bok), I decided it was time to start saving money. To say the book resonated with me is an understatement. I made it a huge game and really took it to the next level. In the following year, I saved alot. In the second year, I saved 80% of my income! I am writing because after reading many of the reviews, I see people find the tips not helpful, or unrealistic. Well...I did buy in bulk, and I did re-use my trash bags, and I re-soled shoes instead of buying new ones, and I kept my thormastat at the right level...etc....etc...etc. My favorite tip was cut open your toothpaste tube. You know, you can get almost an extra month worth of toothpaste that way? Sounds small I know, but you will save thousands per year but incorporating these practices. I put $1000 into a mutual fund, and began adding $15 per paycheck. I increased it with every pay raise, or each time I cut expenses. Four years later my $1000 had grown to $15,000!! It made me realize that systematic saving had more to do with building wealth than income or investing. The philosophy of this book became the cornerstone of my frugality. I have an incredible lifestyle now! I have an 8 figure Investment account, and never need to work again. You are correct is probably guessing that I earned a ton of money working...I did! I work hard, make alot of money...and save most of it! This year I have 40% of my pay automatically directed to savings vehichles like 401k and deffered comp plan. I would recomend this book to anyone who needs or wants to start saving money. You can bet your last dollar that those who gave negative reviews either make a big income, and just dont care about wasting money...or dont have a dime in the bank and just can't bare to go without their $4 latte or $130 per month cable bill with all the premium shows they NEVER watch! You can bet their are NOT multi millionaires!!! I plan to give this book to my children when they get out of college! Oh...and I still cut my toothpaste tube open!

This excellent book by Jonathan Pond will provide you with 1001 practical ways (that you won't find anywhere else) to reduce expences and to invest or expand your lifestyle.

Please ignore the 1 star reviews. If you haven't already figureed it out, they are all from the same JBQ shill.

I also recommend "The Courage To Be Rich", "The Laws of Money" and "9 Steps to Financial Freedom" by Suze Orman.

Powerful advice that really works........2003-10-30

When I came across this book I was out of work and deeply in debt. Thanks to the tips in "101 ways" I found many ways to dig myself out of debt and into financial freedom.

Great book. Highly recommended.

The Biology of Pelagic Tunicates is, to my knowledge, the only book dealing with the biology and ecology of these amazing organisms. This fact per se would make the book extremely valuable and attractive for any person interested in plankton ecology. Yet, its clarity, the amplitude of the subjects dealt, and the profundity of the knowledge presented convert the work in a milestone of plankton ecology. Most of this success is probably due to the fact that the authors are of greatest excellence and are known within the best experts in the field. The Biology of Pelagic Tunicates presents, thus, a clear summary of the present knowledge on these important, although quite unknown, marine organisms, dealing, among other subjects, with their anatomy, taxonomy, physiology and ecological relevance. We have not to forget, however, that this is a highly specialized book that is addressed to biologists or other scientists interested in the subject, but not to the common reader.
