Book Description

Historical, sociological, and ecological analyses reveal that the health of a people is broadly determined by the strength, resilience, and vitality of their culture. The destructive effects of oppression and exploitation on health linger and are difficult to transcend when systemic attacks on the institutional stability of a people persist. Normative cultural destabilization produces added and abnormal challenges to the health status of African Americans. The pursuit of health becomes both a goal and a tool of liberation. Better health builds and releases mental, physical, and spiritual energy that can be directed toward achieving empowerment and development. The process of self-consciously pursuing better health attacks the fundamental mechanisms of cultural exploitation and oppression by serving to dismantle colonial-like relationships of dependency.

5 out of 5 stars Without A Healthy Society, All Will Be Lost.......2007-03-15

In this highly annotated exploration of the racism in health care, author Clovis E. Semmes pens a book perhaps more relevant today as when it was published in Februay 1996.

One sentence seemingly encapsualtes the history of the industrial boom and the determining factors used by the various power brokers in locating factories and other facilities, "Blacks are overrepresented in 'high risk' occupations, which frequently expose them to toxic chemicals, and African-American communities are more likely than other communities to be located near dumping grounds for municipal refuse and toxic waste."

Go to any urban center throughout this country and you may see one or many more rusting factories, long-since abandoned, with soil so contaminated that property that should be worth hundreds of millions of dollars for redevelopment is worth next to nothing. And what population was living, working and raising families near the plants? Exactly.

The chapter entitled, Emancipation and the Roots of Health, sets the foundation for tightly-packed explorations into a gamut of issues, including, Psychosocial Factors of Health, Environmental Toxicity and -the important - Contemporary Challenges to Health; Destabiliztion, Maladoptation and Consumer Manipulation.

But there is also a message of hope. Semmes points to a new beginning, the opportunity to start picking up the pieces and building a real health-care system that will address the past wrongs of racism and deliver the care needed today & tomorrow in, Strategies for Change; Community Action and Public Policy.

A society is doomed without proper health-care. Semmes does a great service in exposing the past for what it was and showing a path to care that will truly serve in a professional & affordable fashion.

WE have seen that the Socialist ideal of reconstructing society on some co-operative or communal basis had its origin in the fact that the unrestricted use of machinery was found to be incompatible with a competitive society; that the problems growing out of machine production found a central position in Socialist theory from the days of Owen to Marx, but were lost sight of and forgotten by the Fabians.

The pricing of derivative instruments has always been a highly complex and time-consuming activity. Advances in technology, however, have enabled much quicker and more accurate pricing through mathematical rather than analytical models. In this book, the author bridges the divide between finance and mathematics by applying this proven mathematical technique to the financial markets. Utilising practical examples, the author systematically describes the processes involved in a manner accessible to those without a deep understanding of mathematics.
                  * Explains little understood techniques that will assist in the accurate more speedy pricing of options
                  * Centres on the practical application of these useful techniques
                  * Offers a detailed and comprehensive account of the methods involved and is the first to explore the application of these particular techniques to the financial markets

I found this to be a very good book. I think, though I could be wrong, that these are typos:
                  p. 50 3.258 Should be S=E*exp(x)
                  p. 51 3.279 Should be '+w(i-1,j)' not '-'
                  p. 61 4.32 Should be u(x,-525/23) instead of -523
                  p. 64 4.50 Should be a3 = -(163*a4 +3,200,000)/880
                  p. 66 4.75 and 4.75 should be a5*0.05^4 and a5*0.15^4 respectively instead of a4
                  p. 74 4.124 Should be (x^3 -4x) not (x^4-4x)
                  p. 74 middle of the page first 'L(u)=...a2*u...'
                  should be 'L(u)=...a2(x)*u...'
                  p. 100 formula (4.343) has to be '...ln(xmin/xmax))' for values in Table 4.9 to be correct.
I'm sure what Table 4.9 'First Exit Time' values represent and have not gone deeper into what is being done. I.e. time is not an input
parameter and the values returned aren't premium.
                  p. 105 It looks like the graph line for Figure 4.15(b) is missing unless it is the single right-hand vertical line near x=1.0. However it is the
small curved line near U= -0.0000.
                  p. 161 8th line should be 'see Definition 11 in Appendix A, not Definition 9
                  p. 177 above 6.48, 'All triangular elements in Figure 6.4...' not 6.5 ?
                  p. 181 to 183 I don't see Figure 6.10 referenced. Probably did not need to be but transform method did not seem to be explained.
                  p. 191 under (6.97) & 6.104 Where did 'b' come from ?
                  p. 191 6.103 and 6.104 should a3 and a4 be a1 and a2 ?
p.192 5th to last line should be 'The last two columns of Table 6.5...' not 6.2
                  p. 192 scale for Figure (6.15) is 'u-uritz (10^-3)' I assume that was just the result of a label in the code for generating the graph
                  p. 216 someone else mentioned the 'V' on the right side of (9.14)-(9.16) and time 't' valuations
don't seem right. [Another person pointed this out to me and] asked "what is the meaning of the variable/parameter 'V' on the
right side of these equations? I cannot find a reference to it (maybe it is described
somewhere ) but it might be the solution of the respective BS PDE in two factors. This means
when solving the 3d case we have to solve a 2d case on each face of the cube?" Later
The same person said "I think indeed that it is the solution of the 2d PDE case (just as the 2-factor
reduces to the 1-factor on the boundary). If this is so we must do a lot of computation; at each
time level we solve for the BCs (which are also PDEs)."
                  p. 221 before (10.5) should be 'Inserting...' not 'Integrating...'
                  p. 229 3rd to last line should be 'Equivalent .. Equation (10.49)...' not 10.50
                  p. 229 eq. 10.35 'H' in summation not defined. Stands for 'Holding Period' ?
                  p. 232 5th line should be 'Inserting ...equation 10.64' not 10.65
                  p. 234 line above 10.95 should be 'Inserting equation 10.91 not 10.90. Also sign changed from 10.91 to 10.92. Correct ? i.e. should 10.93 be +x*sigma^2 *d^2(v)/dx^2---which seems to change your argument
                  p. 245 eq (10.138) = 4.3638 [correct values for sigma_min]; what is (10.139) value of .55 <2.29 ? [2.29 is the FE value but the eq (10.138) is not the 0.55 [the wings at sigma_min and body at
                  sigma_max is .56---is this the 0.55 on line (10.139?].
                  p. 319 B.86 [y',p_sub(y')] should be [y',p]_sub(y') Sorry for the notation. _sub(y') means a
subscript on the variable shown, here on 'p' and '[...]' respectively.
                  p. 324 are equations B.131 and B.133 missing a division sign after c*sigma1 and sigma2 respectively ?
                  p. 349 for the Shreve entry it has 'Journal of Finance and Stochastics' instead of just 'Finance and Stochastics.' I think I've seen that for at least one other bibliographic entry.
                  p. 330 under Theorem 35, 'as defined in Definition 18...' is correct, not 'Definition 15'
                  p. 338 under C.56, should be '...positive definite (see Theorem 35)...' not 34.

                        Book Description

The subsistence agriculture of the pre-chemical era efficiently sustained the nitrogen status of soils by maintaining a balance between N loss and N gain from biological nitrogen fixation (BNF): the microbial conversion of atmospheric N to a form usable by plants. This was possible with less intensive cropping, adaptation of rational crop rotations and intercropping schemes, and the use of legumes as green manure. Modern agriculture concentrates on maximum output, however, overlooking input efficiency; It is not sustainable. Intensive monocropping, with no or inadequate crop rotations or green manuring, together with the excessive use of chemical N fertilizers, results in an imbalance between N gain and N loss. The losses are often larger than the gains, and soil N status declines. The challenge is to sustain soil N fertility in many different tropical and temperate farming systems operating at high productivity levels. This requires judicious integration of BNF components, maintaining a good balance between N losses and gains.
In this book, papers on BNF in crop forage and tree legumes are augmented with discussions of integrated farming systems involving BNF, soil and N management, and recycling of legume residues. BNF by non-legumes are discussed, and attempts to transform cereals into nodulating plants are critically reviewed. Advances in the development of novel methodologies to understand symbiotic relations and to assess N 2 fixation in the field are described, and means are presented to enhance BNF through plant and soil management or breeding and selection. Problems encountered in exploiting BNF under field conditions are examined, as are promising approaches to improving BNF exploitation.

                          Book Description

By better understanding the complex codependent relationships between soils, soil organisms, and crops, scientists can better predict how an agricultural system will behave when the use of tillage, pesticides, and fertilizers is reduced. Soil Ecology in Sustainable Agricultural Systems demonstrates the considerable potential for the application of soil biological knowledge to the sound management of agroecosystems. Chapters 1-6 cover basic studies, with some focusing on the dual nature of roots and soil organic matter as sinks and sources of carbon and nutrients. Other studies focus on the effects of structure-following and structure-forming soil organisms on biochemical and biophysical processes. Chapter 7 takes a more holistic approach and ties basic knowledge together at the agroecosystem level and discusses developing biological management practices that optimize soil properties for sustained agricultural use. In Soil Ecology in Sustainable Agricultural Systems, agronomists will find new research and applications for using the tools of ecology to understand the workings of an agricultural system, and environmentalists and ecologists will gain a better understanding of ecosystems that are created by both man and nature.

                            Book Description

This volume documents the proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Adhesive Joints: Formation, Characteristics and Testing held in Newark, NJ, May 22-24, 2000. Since the first symposium, held in 1982, there had been tremendous research activity dealing with many aspects of adhesive joints. This volume contains a total of 21 papers, which were all properly peer reviewed, revised and edited before inclusion. Therefore, this book is not merely a collection of unreviewed manuscripts, but rather represents information which has passed peer scrutiny. Furthermore, the authors were asked to update their manuscripts, so the information contained in this book should be current and fresh.

The book is divided into three parts: 1) General Papers; 2) Evaluation, Analysis and Testing; and 3) Durability Aspects. The topics covered include: molecular brush concepts in enhancing strength of adhesive joints; factors affecting performance of adhesive joints; substrate preparation and modification; interfacial/interphasial aspects; determination of locus of failure; analysis and evaluation of adhesive joints using various techniques; testing of adhesive joints; stress analysis; application of fracture mechanics; durability aspects; accelerated environmental degradation of adhesive joints; solvent uptake; and adhesives with special characteristics. This volume represents a commentary on the current R&D activity in this arena and it should be of great value and interest to anyone interested in adhesive bonding/adhesive joints. Furthermore, this volume contains a number of excellent review/overview articles, which should be of particular value.

All physicists are familiar with Hooke's law of springs, but few will know of his theory of combustion, that his Micrographia was the first book on microscopy, that his astronomical observations were some of the best seen at the time, that he contributed to the knowledge of respiration, insect flight and the properties of gases, that his work on gravitation preceded that of Newton's, that he invented the universal joint, and that he was an architect of distinction and a surveyor for the City of London after the Great Fire. England's Leonardo is a biography of Hooke covering all aspects of his work, from his early life on the Isle of Wight through his time at Oxford University, where he became part of a group who would form the original Fellowship of the Royal Society. The author adopts a novel approach at this stage, dividing the book by chapter according to the fields of research-Physiology, Engineering, Microscopy, Astronomy, Geology, and Optics-in which Hooke applied himself. The book concludes with a chapter considering the legacy of Hooke and his impact on science.
