I can't validate all methods in this book since I do not yet have my own business. However, this book discusses issues that you want to consider before you step off. Particularly insightful here were considerations for the name of your business, your tag line, and assorted items that are usually done without any professional help that affects your brand before you get your first customer. If you're looking to see how advertising, branding, and marketing - not sales, closing, or customer service - might fit in to your larger business plan, this is the one you're looking for.
It is easy to read in part because the book is also structured as a Marketing 101 course explaining channels, types of marketing messages, etc. and then delves into the financial (or personal service) specifics you need. It is not long but the level of detail given for each item gives you confidence to go out and execute tomorrow (eg - what weight of paper stock to use for mailings). That's why you'll find yourself picking it back off the shelf. Though other reviewers comment that much of this stuff is too expensive, wouldn't you at least want a good look at an ideal marketing plan before deciding where to allocate the funds you have? The authors do a good job of painting the relative values of different efforts anyway. You have to determine your own point of dimishing returns. As for the skeptical note by several that the book is written by a marketing firm that (my gosh) is marketing their services at the same time? First, that is only toward the end and is plain to see. If you asked for an overview, it makes sense that you would also consider tailored consulting services. Second, I've heard financial advisors are known to advise people to pay for more financial advice.

This book is a good "marketing" example of how to sell your services by writing a book, and help others in the process - I applaud the authors' efforts. But many of the other suggestions do take dollars that many entrepreneurs and consultants simply don't have. That's where the critical concept of REAL personal publicity takes over. People have to know who you are, what you stand for, and why they should hire you and do business with you. Establishing trust is key - and there are effective ways to do that without spending big bucks or hiring a consultant. Volunteering in the community is one example.Volunteering for a cause you believe in provides professional visibility, as well as the personal and important satisfaction of giving something back to society. Likewise, volunteering for a trade organization can give you lots of valuable professional exposure and recognition among peers and business contacts. Moreover, sending out press releases and getting more than just a little publicity about your efforts does not diminish your good deeds. And that applies to all entrepreneurial endeavors, not just financial planning.
oh man.......2002-08-06
I read this book based on the recommendation of a friend, and let me tell you it pretty much changed my life. Unfortunately I had to give the book back to that friend, so I actually went on-line and bought my own copy. I don't know of any other word to describe my feelings after reading it except for inspiring. Mr. Montoya's broad-based and down to earth approach to marketing yourself is so simple and riddled with common sense; I'm surprised I hadn't read anything like it before. I've read many books like this, but after reading this one I'm inspired, and that says a lot for a lazy bum like me. I hope Peter writes another one in case I lose the incredible drive he's already created.
Market Yourself Before Your Services.......2002-06-23
The authors Peter Montoya and Tim Vandehey have written a book that is aimed at a wide spectrum of financial advisors; experienced, entry-level, old, young, investment bankers, private bankers and the independent financial advisor. Their methods are made to help you stand out amongst the many.
They start of with urging the reader to create a small one to two page personal brochure which contains an abridged version of the client advisor's personal history, accomplishments, hobbies, several photos as well as anecdotes. Above all this brochure should not contain products or sell anything.
According to one of their interviewees, most clients base their decision on trust when choosing a financial advisor. Product range is not the first point they examine. It is easier for a prospective client to trust an advisor if he has something in comman with him i.e. specializing in an area of common interest with the furture client. "Retirement Planning for Dental Professionals" or "Financial Planning for Commercial Airline Pilots" etc...The personal brochure gives the client a chance to attach a personality to the advisor.
There are suggestions of creating a one year marketing plan with a combination of personal postcards, sales letters, direct mail, creating a personal logo as well as involving public relations and advertising agencies in your work.
It is a good book but if you are a client advisor working for any global financial institution, you will have to go through proper channels to attain approval to execute some of these ideas. Some of these concepts might work well in the U.S. and would need a little adjustment to adapt to local market cultures in Europe and Asia.

An excellent companion to your case book.......2006-12-20
This book does an excellent job at laying out the default rules and explaining them in an organized manner. What is even better about the book is its use of charts to demonstrate the differences between the various default statutes. This book definitely helped me earn a goo grade in the class. I highly recommend it. For anyone who has taken a course with Professor Kleinberger, this book is written much differently than his lecturing style, and it will help make sense of what is covered in class.

This book was nice and simple. A good summary of what you need to know. The section on agency was great. I think he got a little carried away in the partnerships section when he compared RUPA and UPA. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants a comprehensive summary of the law of agency, partnerships, and unincorporated entities.

Uninspired Farce.......2006-09-25
If MOON OVER BUFFALO seems a bit like something you would have seen on the legendary CAROL BURNETT SHOW twenty or thirty years ago--well, there is a reason for that. Ken Ludwig, author of the considerably superior LEND ME A TENOR, essentially created the play as a vehicle for Carol Burnett in her 1995 return to Broadway. But what works extremely well as variety show "sketch" comedy seems exceptionally uninspired when expanded to the length of a full show: although Burnett's talents kept the play running for a reasonable length of time, no one was greatly enthusiastic about the play itself.
The story is pure claptrap. A once famous theatrical couple, George and Charlotte Hay, have begun to fray at the edges. George is fond of cheap women and cheaper liquior; Charlotte is prone to temperments; and their shows aren't bringing in the customers like they used to. When Charlotte suspects George of yet another cheap affair, she stomps out and George goes on yet another bender--and is dead drunk by the time Hollywood calls in the form of celebrated director Frank Capra, who is considering the Hays as the stars of his newest project. Can they find George, sober him up, and patch up the family before Capra arrives? Well, do you really need to ask?
The play screams with slamming doors, antiquated plot devices that were old hat even in Shakespeare's day, and stock characters that would make a comic strip look well rounded. The first act of MOON OVER BUFFALO reeks of unfunny comic turns; the second act, however, manages to acheive a consistent mediocrity with the rare shining moment that reminds of us what Ludwig can actually do when he puts his mind to it. Over the years, and largely on the strength of Burnett's name and Ludwig's other work, it has attained a certain popularity in community and regional theatre--but I think it would be safe to say that whatever charms the play has in performance resides in the cast. Because so far as the script is concerned, MOON OVER BUFFALO is a no-show.

"Moon Over Buffalo" is a backstage farce that deliberately evokes the classic screen comedies of Howard Hawks ("Bringing Up Baby," "His Girl Friday") and Frank Capra ("Arsenic and Old Lace," "You Can't Take It With You"). Oddly enough, it uses the expected presence of Capra in the story as a normative "foil" to the drunken, cacophonous and eccentric behavior of the Hays' family. One might expect, especially at the comparatively late date of the setting (1952), the use of a more contemporary and influential director such as Huston, Preminger, or Wilder (it would be 30 years before "It's a Wonderful Life" would be rediscovered and Capra restored to influence.) But this is a play that, while inarguably entertaining its audience, is also in effect a somewhat self-serving "consolation" for actors. The play's "message" seems to be that notwithstanding unpredictable employment, unstable relationships, and bottoming out with the bottle, actors are blessed with a kind of insanity that enlivens our own dull existences while affirming their own free agency.
In short, "Moon Over Buffalo" is a nice diversion and a broad and physical, fast-moving play that comes up considerably short of the deft and smart humor of a Cary Grant or the best cinematic "screwball" comedy scripts. On the other hand, there's no question that George Hays is a worthy predecessor, or successor (however you choose to view him), to that adorable if not always coherent lush, Peter O'Toole, himself an heir to John Barrymore, Erroll Flynn, and a host of impulsive, grown child-actors whose Thespianic ties were more with Dionysus than with modern-day press agents, career advisors, and personal trainers.
Wonderful Script, Wonderful Play.......2002-11-28
Moon Over Buffalo, is a refreshingly hilarious script. Once I began to read it, I could not put it down. It is a fast paced, farce that captures the attention of anyone reading it. It is just as fast on stage, and was a wonderful production. With a simple set, and a great varity of characters any group from a college theatre club to a community theatre can pull it off. It was a joy to direct, and I was told it was a joy to act in. I highly recommend it. Read it, Watch it, or Perform it, anyway you are promised a hit.
Moon Over Buffalo: A GREAT Comedy.......2001-11-15
When you are reading a book or a script, do you find yourself bored, or rarely interrested? Well, I never laugh out loud while reading and I about died from it after reading this script. It is THE funniest play I have EVER read and I reccomend it to any theater company... except maybe a children's company. There is no lack of raunchy sex jokes and misunderstood situations. George and Charlotte Hay, a famous acting couple, are doing Rep. at a sham theater in Buffalo, New York. They are horribly upset that director Frank Capra in Hollywood has not chosen them to star in his new movie, "The Twilight of the Scarlet Pimpernel."
In the mean time, Charlotte finds out from Richard Maynard (a lawyer friend of the Hay's who continually tries to sweep Charlotte off her feet) that their company isn't making the payroll and their financial situation is quite serious. In the meantime Paul, Charlotte and George's stage manager, tries to find George and tell him that he has impregnated Eileen, an actress in the company. In the midst of all the chaos, Rosalind, George and Charlotte's daughter, has come to tell the family that she is getting married and has brought her fiancee (the rather nerdy weather man, Howard.) to meet the family (who unfortunately meets him, first. Ethel, her slightly deaf grandma, for example). Paul happens to be an old flame of Roz's. In fact, they were almost married, but Roz wanted to lead a normal life. Charlotte finds out that her husband has been sleeping with Eileen and all hell breaks loose when George disappears, then shows up drunk as a skunk a half hour before the matinee. This play is an absolute riot. It's a big audience pleaser, and good for a laugh if you just need something funny to read.

Book Description

Finally, "Pitstop Problems" continues our ongoing Formula One series with Donald, Uncle Scrooge and Daisy on sports adventure.

I've used Director for 5 years and i found this book full of good examples. I found the Object Oriented Programming chapter so exciting...Probably one of the best book on Director i've read (i'm waiting for Gary's new Book - Using Macromedia Director 8.5).

This is awesome! I've used Director for 2 years and was really excited about the new 3D features in 8.5 but thought I'd have to spend months learning how to use the engine. In 1 week of reading this I made my first user activated 3D projector that plays sound relational to my world.
I know why this book is so good: I looked at these guys sites in the front of the book for these authors - these guys really know how to create. Examples are inspirations!
This is the juice. I want more. Give me more.
