    Book Description

Organizations are being urged to experiment with new structures and processes. A 'process perspective' on organizing is emerging as a major challenge to 'functional' principles of organizing established during the last century. Business process reengineering is one exemplar of process thinking that has received great attention amongst organizational theorists and practitioners. This in-depth account of business process reengineering within a major NHS hospital is an important contribution to the very limited stock of empirical knowledge about new organizational forms, especially in the public sector. The book combines empirical data gathered through an intensive, comparative case study method with strategic choice and neo-institutional theories to analyse the changing context of public organizations, importation of models of organizing from private to public organizations, and dynamics of public sector transformation. The outcomes of the change programme add to our more general organizational knowledge about (a) the impact of corporate change programmes, particularly in professionalized and public sector settings, (b) impediments and enablers of lateral organizing structures and processes, and (c) contradictions within the New Public Management between functional and process principles for organizing.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Big Picture Business Book you will find this year.......2004-01-11

Peter Marber combines data, insight and experience to present a convincing view of how current global capitalism is primarily a prosperity-oriented, future-enhancing system that has made and will continue to make a great positive difference for its ever-increasing number of participants.

The book is amazing. Especially as a defense against protectionists, pessimists and overall progress-slowers.

5 out of 5 stars Marber Strikes Again!.......2003-11-25

This book follows on Peter Marber's earlier book on emerging markets to tell the story of the future before it happens. Mixing astute analysis of data with a world view that has been proven to be correct, Mr. Marber shows the way to the future. I tend to be bearish about the markets but Mr. Marber's argument is very compelling and enlightening. This book is a must read for investors and students alike.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent book!.......2003-11-07

Well written and researched. An interesting perspective on globalization. I recommend it to anyone seeking to understand the the impact of money on world views.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ON GLOBAL ISSUES!.......2003-11-04

If you're at all interested in global issues, then you need to understand Professor Marber's simple premise regarding the interplay of human capital, free trade, and financial markets. You don't need a sophisticated background to understand these concepts. After reading this book, you'll view many contemporary conflicts around the world - econcomic, political, and social - in a whole new light. Well worth your investment.

    4 out of 5 stars the basics.......2003-09-04

I enjoyed the book and would recomend it to anybody who is interested in what is essentially the building block of globalization.

Hardbound. The 18th Conference of the International Society for Chronobiology, held in conjunction with the Third Annual Meeting of the European Society for Chronobiology took place in Leiden, The Netherlands, in July 1987. Chronobiology, defined as the study of temporal processes at all levels of biological organization, is a rapidly developing new field with its own concepts, tools and methods. The aim of this conference was to produce a state-of-the-art summary of the subject, taking into consideration the basic and applied fields as well as the different schools of thought. Alongside the oral communications are overview chapters from scientists unable to attend the meeting, reporting on recent advances in their specific fields.

                  Book Description

Gravity is one of the most inexplicable forces of nature, controlling everything, from the expansion of the Universe to the ebb and flow of ocean tides. The search for the laws of motion and gravitation began more than two thousand years ago, a quest that Prabhakar Gondhalekar recounts in The Grip of Gravity. Beginning with Aristotle and concluding with Planck, Gondhalekar outlines a 'genealogy' of gravity and lucidly explains how previous explanations have shaped the most recent development in the field, string theory. In this work, physicist and astronomer Gondhalekar describes experiments, both planned and proposed, and clearly explains natural phenomena like ocean tides, seasons, ice ages, the formation of planets, stars, and exotic objects like black holes and neutron stars, which are all controlled by gravity. Including anecdotes and thumb-nail sketches of the personalities involved, The Grip of Gravity provides an introduction to the foundation of modern physics and shows how the current developments in string theory may lead to a new and radical interpretation of gravity. Prabhakar Gondhalekar is an Honorary Fellow in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University College, London. Until his retirement in 1998, he was the head of the Space Astronomy Group at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, where he had been a researcher for 18 years. His research has included a number of topics in galactic and extragalactic astronomy, with his major work focusing on the interstellar medium and active galactic nuclei. Gondhalekar has been awarded Royal Society, Leverhulme Trust, and NATO Research Fellowships to do research in universities in the United States and Israel.

5 out of 5 stars The author weaves a tight fabric from many yarns........2001-12-07

For me, a well-written science history contains three things. It establishes the context for the discoveries and developments. It accurately describes the relevant details of the experiments so that the results, interpretations and conclusions can be understood. Finally, it discusses the implications of the developments. The author accomplishes all three to my satisfaction in this book.
The story of gravity involves many subplots. Each part contributes a piece to the developing concept of gravity. The author skillfully weaves the pieces into a coherent story. Along the way he presents details that challenge common misconceptions about gravity, clarifies myths about the familiar personalities who have demystified aspects of gravity and introduces less familiar but influential contributors to our still-evolving understanding of gravity.
The book is comprehensive enough to satisfy my requirements for a well-written science history, but not so over-burdened with detail that it becomes cumbersome to follow the main plot. It reads like a suspense story for a reader who's interested in science history.

                        From the Publisher

Collections of early writings of famous writers can often be dreary affairs, but F. Scott Fitzgerald's early work abounds with life. Because he served such an unusually short apprenticeship he wrote his first, highly successful book, This Side of Paradise, soon after graduating Princeton...his undergraduate work is of special interest. In fact, his college and professional writing careers overlapped. Both This Side of Paradise and Flappers and Philosophers incorporated (with some reworking) some of the early Princeton stories gathered in this volume. In this first complete and chronologically sequenced collection of Fitzgerald's writings for two Princeton publications, The Tiger and Nassau Lit, we can witness Fitzgerald's dramatic growth. We can almost hear him find his voice as a writer. Opportunities to trace the development of style of so significant a writer are rare. These early works of his provide a mirror to his times. His words and the often whimsical sampling!

Fitzgerald stands at center stage throughout this book, but some of the "supporting characters" are notable figures in their own rights. Two of Fitzgerald's closes Princeton friends also opted for writing careers: author/poet John Peale Bishop and Edmund "Bunny" Wilson, who was Fitzgerald's editor at Princeton and became his lifelong "literary conscience" not to mention the most important literary critic in America. These two names will be seen on the masthead of the Nassau Lit along with Fitzgerald's. Scholars will also be fascinated to note that key themes found in Fitzgerald's mature fiction come into focus in his undergraduate work. Heroes and heroines recognizably Fitzgeraldian populate these pages. And the abundant original artwork culled from back issues of The Tiger and Nassau Lit gives the book a delightful visual appeal found in no other Fitzgerald book.

From the supplier: F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jay Gatsby in 'The Great Gatsby' is not an idealized romantic, as the narrator portrays him. Fitzgerald drops hints that Nick, the narrator, is too innocent to spot Gatsby's deviousness. If Gatsby's wealth is an indication of his successful criminal career he cannot be the romantic Nick assumes him to be. Fitzgerald has combined his real-life inspiration Arnold Rothstein's qualities of sophistication, cunning and mysteriousness in Gatsby. It is Gatsby's veiled criminal instincts which make him a sinister gangster.
