Millions of consumers have become trapped in a spiral of debt, but there is hope. If you wants to free yourself from the shackles of debt, this book is for you--it can help you "get out of debt, stay out of debt, and live prosperously." Jerrold Mundis writes in a friendly, engaging style, urging readers to stop the cycle of spending. Mundis knows what he's talking about--he, too, was once thousands of dollars in debt and didn't know where to turn. Anecdotes from Debtors Anonymous folks, plus multiple examples from the writer's own life and ledgers, make How to Get Out of Debt an encouraging read, not a condescending one. Once you start your program, you may want to periodically reread some chapters for inspiration--and fun.

Easy and thoughtful way to clear your debt and free your life.......2007-09-29
What I liked best about this book is that it's real. It doesn't sugar-coat the frustration and even embarrasment that you can feel when you find yourself 30,000 or more in debt. But it doesn't simply rub your hand and tell you to "manifest" prosperity either. Frankly, putting too much energy into the law of attraction is likely how we get ourselves into all this debt - trying to be like "everyone" else.
I digress.
The book puts out some straightforward steps for you to follow. Follow them and you'll eventually get out of debt. Not tomorrow. And without having to pay some userer for "debt consolidation counseling" either. But it's work.
I liken it to losing weight - you have to change you're whole mindset and make small, positive changes every day in order to acheive your goal. The same principles apply here. Make changes every day. Don't debt any more and follow the plan. No magic bullet - but haven't you realized they don't work anyway?
LIVING PROOF.......2007-09-01
Just 6 years ago (2001), I found myself under crushing student loan and credit card debt. You would be blown away by how much debt I'd amassed. I'd lost my job and the creditors were calling. My life quickly fell apart. I was depressed, anxious and mentally paralyzed, not knowing how to take back control. Creditors were calling every five minutes it seemed, yelling at me, threatening me. I was broke, and broken-hearted at where things were in my life. I even had to move back in with my parents which was humiliating. I read a lot of books on finances and two of them made all the difference in the world, "How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt and Live Prosperously," and "Rich Dad Poor Dad." "Rich Dad" was about concepts and changing the paradigm of how I looked at money. "How to Get Out of Debt" was very, very specific with HOW to get out of debt and GET RICH SLOWLY. Reading "How to Get Out of Debt" was like my first day of sobriety. I had no idea that I even had this debting habit, as dumb as that may sound. I was reading the book, going "wow--that's me!" I applied the BACK TO BLACK principles, day by day, month by month, year by year. And now, 6 years later, I celebrate my first full year of ownership in my first home--which seemed an impossible dream just two years ago. I own my car outright. I have zero credit card debt. And my overall student loan debt has been reduced by at least 40%. I pay cash that I've saved for things that I need. I PAY MYSELF FIRST! (this is a key principle in both books). And believe it or not, I haven't had a credit card in about 10 years now--I use a Visa checkcard. Without a credit card I've traveled to Europe, Mexico and Central America, rented cars, and paid for emergencies. And I don't live impoverished. I just live within my means, and pay cash with money saved. It's a complete myth that you need a credit card to survive. This book helped me to understand that. It was also very specific as to what happens if a creditor takes you to court or ruins your credit, which are probably the two biggest threats they have over you. Knowledge made all those things less scary. Ultimately, I would say this book is about how to replace unhealthy money habits with healthier ones. If this book cost $1,000, it would still be worth it. At $10, it's a blessing.
Please read, it will teach you how to help yourself.......2007-07-17
If you are like me and you are trying to pay your bils and debts in a responsible and timely manner..this book is for you. I have read some of the other " financial authors" out there and I always felt lost and that there advice was just out of my needs..this book was right on. After I followed the spending plan record ( Wow, do you honestly want to know what you are spending, this will open your eyes) and wrote all my debts down in black and white, I feel that I can tackle all my money issues in a clear and concise manner.
After following this plan, I am now ready to move on to retirement planning, college savings, etc. If you are trying to get through today so you can get to tomorrow, this financial guide is for you.
Get Out of the Red and Into the Black.......2007-07-03
Plain and simple, How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt & Live Prosperously is one of the best contributions to the personal finance realm. Why do I say that? Because, in no uncertain terms, it addresses circumstances that most people in our society find themselves - deep in debt, digging deeper, and dealing, in silent desperation, with the repercussions.
In an era where consumers often finance their lifestyles with credit cards, use their homes like ATM machines, and, ultimately, make consumer credit counseling a booming business, Jerrold Mundis explains how our emotions and habitual thinking have put, and kept, many of us on the path to financial ruin.
The genius of this book, however, is its backbone: the principles of Debtors Anonymous. Though we may hate to think of it, habits of a lifetime do take work to change, ignoring does Madison Avenue take emotional strength, and dealing with the issues debt often engenders can be really tough. But, this book offers hope, and support, to those who heed its message.
Bottom line: no matter where how deep in debt you are, there is a way out if you keep your head and keep moving forward. And, Mundis can help you do it, if you follow his three cardinal rules: 1) don't debt one day at a time, 2) Keep a spending record scrupulously, and 3) adhere closely to your spending plan.
All in all, How to Get Out of Debt, Stay Out of Debt & live Prosperously can be one of the best additions to your financial library, whether you are in drowning in debt or not.
Only for people in serious debt with no knowledge of finances.......2007-06-21
For my situation, this book was too rudimentary. I was looking for something that would give me startegies on how to payoff debt quicker. This book is not really about ways to payoff debt. It is more about learning how to spend less and seemed to be more of an advertisement for Debtors Anonymous. Things like "Try to go one day without using your credit card"... not for me. If you're in really bad shape and spend and spend without any way to stop then seek professional help, don't rely on this book. If you're like me and just looking for ways to reduce your outstanding debt quicker, look elsewhere, this is not the book for you.

Book Description
Flexible and fast, computer simulations now play an important role in the study of ecology. This book gives a complete account of one such simulation, the Hurley Pasture Model, a dynamic, deterministic, mechanistic model for grassland, developed by the author and his colleagues over the last
twenty years. The book presents the rationale and theoretical elements of this type of model, followed by an overview of the Hurley grassland simulator and the derivation and construction of its plant, animal, soil and litter, water, and environment and management components. The model is then
evaluated by a series of long- and short-term dynamic simulations and steady state responses, which demonstrate how predictions can be made about the effects of, for example, climate change or particular regimes of fertilizer application, grazing or cutting. This book will be of great value to
grassland agronomists and modelers, crop physiologists and plant ecologists, and to students of ecology as a case study of a plant ecosystem model. It will also be of interest to other ecologists and environmental scientists pursuing computer modeling and its applications.

Description:
Ecosystem models are used to explore scientific questions and as a means of decision support. It is therefore essential to assess the quality of the outputs from these. One important measure of quality of model outputs is their uncertainty that arise from uncertainties in measurements. In this study, uncertainty associated with simulation of NEE (net ecosystem exchange) by the PaSim (pasture simulation model) model was tested at four grassland sites. The effect of measurement uncertainties in the main input factors for climate (temperature, precipitation, global radiation), atmospheric CO"2 concentration, soil characteristics (bulk density, clay fraction, pH, carbon content of different pools), and management (N input) on output uncertainty of NEE prediction was explored. Monte Carlo runs were performed for 2 years, 2002 and 2003, using Latin Hypercube sampling from probability density functions (PDF) for each input factor. Global uncertainty, represented by the standard deviation of the NEE estimates, was generally higher in 2003 than in 2002 per site with full data records for both years. There was considerable variation in global uncertainty from site to site and between years. These results indicate that output uncertainty does not depend solely on absolute input uncertainties. The mean NEE of the global uncertainty distribution was also different from the NEE result of the single model run using the default set of input factors. The results clearly indicate the dependency of factor importance and uncertainty in model simulations on the environmental conditions of the system under study. One indication is that more environmentally constrained systems produce higher uncertainties in model results. We conclude that any application of the model within decision support should be accompanied by a case specific uncertainty analysis presenting the mean of the output distribution as model results. The consequences of these findings for the application of PaSim at the continental scale are discussed.

Description:
A mechanistic model of grassland dynamics is used to simulate fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO"2) and nitrous oxide (N"2O) in European grasslands. The simulations refer to five sites belonging to a monitoring network setup within the framework of the European Union project GREENGRASS. Simulated gross primary productivity ranges from 0.4 to 1.9kgCm^-^2year^-^1 depending on environmental conditions and management. Ecosystem respiration is calculated in the order of 0.7-1.5kgCm^-^2year^-^1, resulting in a net CO"2 uptake of about 0.3kgCm^-^2year^-^1, in reasonable agreement with observations. Linear relationships between ecosystem respiration and gross primary productivity, as well as between net primary productivity and annual precipitation are indicated by the simulations. Annual emissions of N"2O are predicted in the range of 1-5kgNha^-^1year^-^1, a factor of 2-10 higher than observed. This is caused by an overestimation of the background fluxes. On the other hand, the model fails to faithfully reproduce timing, duration and magnitude of peak emissions triggered by the application of mineral and organic fertilizers and by rain events.

Description:
Agricultural management of grasslands results in sequestration and emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs, particularly CO"2, N"2O and CH"4). Here, we used a process-based model (DNDC) to estimate the fluxes of the major GHGs from grasslands at 0.5^o resolution across Europe, and combined these to produce a spatially explicit estimate of the total global warming potential (GWP, expressed in CO"2 equivalents). The DNDC model [Li, C., Frolking, S., Crocker, G.J., Grace, P.R., Klir, J., Korchens, M., Poulton, P.R., 1997. Simulating trends in soil organic carbon in long-term experiments using the DNDC model. Geoderma 81, 45-60] simulates carbon and nitrogen cycling in agro-ecosystems at a sub-daily time step and consists of four interacting submodels: soil and climate (including water flow and leaching), plant growth, decomposition, and denitrification. Input data sets for grassland area, climate, nitrogen deposition, and soil properties were collated. The typical current grassland management regime was established for ten biogeographical regions on the basis of questionnaires sent to national experts, and used to derive model input data. A 20-year simulation was carried out using DNDC for each site. Simple estimates of methane emissions from grazing livestock were made according to the IPCC Tier 1 method. Most grassland areas are net sources for GHGs in terms of total global warming potential-the beneficial effect of sequestering carbon in soil is outweighed by the emissions of N"2O from soil and (predominantly) CH"4 emissions from livestock. The net effect of European grasslands on GWP (emission of 23TgCyear^-^1) corresponds to a 2.5% increase on the EU-15 fossil fuel CO"2 emissions (907TgCyear^-^1).

Description:
It is usually assumed that the fluxes of individuals between the subpopulations in a metapopulation are proportional to the sizes of the departure and arrival resource patches and to the inverse of the distance between these two patches, and therefore, can be described by a regression model, which ignores spatial heterogeneity of the landscape between the resource patches. Recently, Kindlmann et al. [Kindlmann, P., Aviron, S., Burel, F., Ouin A. Can assumption of a non-random search improve our prediction of butterfly fluxes between resource patches? Ecol. Entomol., 29, 447-456] have shown that a spatially explicit model using the non-random dispersal patterns of Maniola jurtina, a butterfly species, can explain its fluxes between herbaceous areas in agricultural landscapes much better than the regression model. However, the question still remains, in which particular aspects the regression model reflects the reality satisfactorily and in which ones it fails. To determine these aspects, we analyze here the model developed by Kindlmann et al. [Kindlmann, P., Aviron, S., Burel, F., Ouin A. Can assumption of a non-random search improve our prediction of butterfly fluxes between resource patches? Ecol. Entomol.,29, 447-456] and fit its predictions concerning the dependence of fluxes between individual resource patches on sizes of these patches and on the distance between these patches by the regression model. We conclude that the regression model fails to predict the intensity or fluxes between resource patches, especially when the patches considered are relatively close to each other, so that under optimal conditions the flux could be relatively large. In such cases, the structure of the habitat matrix (e.g. obstacles and/or stepping stones between patches) becomes important.

Uncle Albert's Legacy.......2005-12-29
In spite of his lasting fame and eminence, Albert Einstein remains largely misunderstood by most of us to this day. Yet it's not for lack of trying. His presence is ubiquitous in high school math classrooms throughout the United States, where he is often depicted on glossy posters as an old man amid the stars with e=mc2 hovering nearby. Most children eventually learn that Einstein and his famous equation are the reason we have atomic bombs. Beyond that, they know next to nothing.
But "Albert Einstein: Philosopher-Scientist" edited by Paul Arthur Schilpp can change all that, provided one makes the effort. After the introduction and preface the book opens with Einstein's "Autobiographical Notes," written in German at the age of 67. We may read both the German text and English translation on the facing pages, and compare the two, which I often did, especially with difficult passages. And there are some "difficult passages" to be sure.
The next section contains a series of essays by Einstein's esteemed colleagues and contemporaries. Among them are Wolfgang Pauli, Max Born, Niels Bohr, Kurt Godel, Gaston Bachelard and others of equal stature. Some contributors disagree with Einstein's position on statistical quantum theory, Max Born in particular. Others tackle the epistemological issues of their time, illuminating subtle philosophical considerations that quickened the numerous advances in theoretical physics during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. One essay: Philipp G. Frank's "Einstein, Mach, and Logical Positivism" reveals an astounding fact. "Because of the close connection, which obviously exists between Einstein's theory of relativity and Mach's philosophy, Lenin feared that Einstein's theories might become a Trojan horse for the infiltration of idealistic currents among Russian scientists and among educated classes in general."
I find this appalling. Apparently, even devout atheists can lack an open mind.
Happily, Einstein answers each contributor at the end of the book in his "Remarks to the Essays Appearing in this Collective Volume." He begins with Pauli and Born, primarily because of their position on statistical quantum theory, whereupon Einstein launches into a fascinating defense of his own position. But as with all the contributors, the tone throughout was gentle and respectful. And one comes away with the impression that Einstein was beloved by his contemporaries because he returned that love in kind. The result was a mighty collusion of powerful minds that changed the world. Now, if only politicians and preachers could do the same!
Al Einstein only Autobiography...so called "Obituary".......2002-10-07
Albert Einstein lived the last thirty years of his life in the United States and passed away in 1955 in New Jersey. He wrote three great papers in 1905 at the age of 26.
This book is the only thing ever coming close to an autobiography that Einstein ever wrote. Needless to say, offers of money and prizes were offered to him, unlike the millions offered to ex-U.S. presidents to write a book. He never accepted any of these offers. The only offer he accepted was from Professor Schilpp to write an intellectual autobiography of himself.
Incredible and Timeless is only ways to describe this book. Einstein labels as his "obituary", for a man who was considered the "Person of the Century" by Time Magazine.
Friends, his own "obituary" in his own hand is a worthy read and cost of the book. It is not a "personal" life but his "thinking" on science and of course on physics. We all know the two great theories of physical was created in the early 20th. century: the theory of relativity and quantum mechanics. Einstein alone created relativity and was also one of the founders of the quantum theory. We also know now that Einstein never accepted quantum theory till the end.
Here, Einstein fully describes the failure of classical mechanics and the rise of the electromagnetic field, the theory of relativity and of the quanta.
Of note, Einstein's "Evolution of Physics" is a general lay discussion of the same issues. This is Einstein's technical discussion of the evolution of physics.
"When I was a fairly precocious young man the nothingness of the hopes and strivings which chases most men restlessly through life came to my consciousness with considerable vitality" This comment alone is worth price of the book.
The essays sections includes writing of the great scientist of the 20th century. We only read about them in textbook but here they are in their own words: Niels Bohr, Louis De Broglie, Arnold Sommerfeld, Max Born, Kurt Godel, Hans Reichenbach and Wolfgang Pauli. One only sees their picture in physics textbooks.
This book really belongs in all who are professional scientists or are interested in science. Unlike Newton "Principia" or Darwin's "The Origin of Species" Einstein papers are scattered everyone. This is the only definitive book on Einstein by Einstein himself.
Moreover, it is a scholarly and scientific book, so it should last for a long time and of value to all future generations.

Einstein by Einstein!.......1998-07-25
The philosopher Paul Schilpp directed, for many years, a series of books like this one, each around an eminent scholar. I recall, for instance, those on Russell and Popper. They started with an intellectual autobiography, followed by articles by specialists both pro and against the protagonist. They all had, it seems, a very high quality. No one surpassed, though, or even equalled, the volume on Einstein. And that because of the absolutely extraordinary quality of his intellectual autobiography, which he insisted in naming his "obituary". This is one of the great moments of written expression, rivalling Augustine's "Confessions". Is is written in German, and faced, page by page, with a translation by Schilpp. At a certain point, Einstein engages himself in answering the question he just proposed: "What, precisely, is thinking". The defense rests.
