Book Description
In recent years the media have reported, frequently with alarm, on the increasing use of genetically modified crops in agriculture. Some groups have expressed concern about consumer safety and the risks of large-scale ecosystem damage. Others have noted the resulting shift of power away from locally controlled farming operations toward large agribusiness and biotech companies, and the particular vulnerability of farmers in the developing world to this trend.
In Seeds of Contention: World Hunger and the Global Controversy over GM Crops, development specialists Per Pinstrup-Andersen and Ebbe Schiøler focus attention on the less discussed issues of the potential benefits and costs of genetically modified crops for developing countries. Pinstrup-Andersen and Schiøler review the basic issues and discuss the potential that such crops have for addressing the great needs of poor and undernourished peoples throughout the world. They explain how increased agricultural productivity is not enough in addressing the problem of famine. People in developing countries need crops that are disease-resistant, can fend off insect predators, and can withstand severe environmental conditions in order to produce larger crop yields.
Pinstrup-Andersen and Schiøler are sober in their assessment of these prospects, for they acknowledge that GM crops alone will not solve the world's food problem. They argue, however, that they may be one element in the solution and people in developing countries should have information about benefits and risks and the freedom to make their own decisions about whether or not to grow and consume GM crops.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2004-05-03
There are many good books on Enron, but this isn't one of them. This book is a major disappointment. The authors cobbled together this book by reading articles about the Enron situation with no first hand research.
Balanced review.......2004-04-23
This books brings together the fundamental issues of Enron in a balanced educated way. Each author brings important experience and insight to the table about this amazing disater with more insight that those in Washington who attempt to regulate its aftermath. It is a true service to its readers.
Dull as Dirt.......2004-04-03
What should have been an interesting topic is given very dull treatment. You've read everything presented here on public policy before.

Book Description
The border between the United States of America and Mexico is the busiest in the world. This area is also the meeting place of the two great cultures of the Western Hemisphere, Spanish-speaking Latin America and English-speaking North America. Recent demographic migrations coupled with increasing globalization have necessitated closer cooperation and communication between these groups.
The area of communication of this dictionary centers around the vernacular or common names of plants. Many recent immigrants from Mexico and further south have gained employment in areas of agriculture, landscaping, and commercial plant nurseries. The new residents also bring with them a rich history of herbal medicines that are becoming increasingly popular in the United States. Both groups share interests in each other's cuisines with respect to food plants and spices.
This dictionary contains the Latin, English, and Spanish names for over 7,000 species of the most important plants found mainly in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Included are native and naturalized plants as well as plants of economic value. The main section of the book is organized alphabetically by the scientific Latin genus and species of each plant. The book is also fully indexed by common names primarily in American-English and Mexican-Spanish.

Book Description
This volume presents a thorough introduction to the theory and operation of drift chambers, one of the most important modern methods of elementary particle detection. The topics, presented in a text-book style with many illustrations, include the basics of gas ionization, electronic drift and signal creation and discuss in depth the fundamental limits of accuracy and the issue of particle identification.
The book also surveys all types of drift chambers and the various drift-chamber gases in use. The calculation of the device parameters and physical processes are presented in some detail, as is all necessary background material. Thus the treatment, well byeond addressing the specialist in the field, is well suited to graduate physics students and nuclear engineers seeking a both thorough and pedagogical introduction to the field.
The second edition presents an thoroughly revised and updated version of this classic text and includes a new chapter on electronic amplification and signal shaping.

Customer Reviews:
Loved this atlas for neuroanatomy.......2007-02-10
I used this atlas extensively for neuroanatomy in med school. Pictures are phenomenal, and the pathways overlayed on anatomical structures are very helpful. I prefer this atlas over Haines.
Great images!.......2006-08-10
This is a great atlas with photographs of slices, MRI images and more, and FANTASTIC pathways illustrations.
Essential Book.......2003-07-25
"...an essential requirement for the library of any individual who works in the field...if you buy only one atlas, this is the one to by." (Journal of Neurosurgery, Vol. 98, June 2003)
Recommended Book.......2002-12-17
"I will certainly use [The Brain Atlas] to teach our residents in neuroanatomy and will encourage them to purchase the book as well." --Volker K.H. Sonntag, M.D., Barrow Neurosurgical Associates, Ltd.
Medical Student Opinion.......2000-02-23
The photographs are excellent, but the index sucks. It is poorly organized and incomplete. Take my advice and buy this book for Neuroanatomy just for the pictures. The paperback edition is very afforadable. Just put lots of little flags on the pages or sections you use most. It will save you much brain-ache.

Book Description
Symbiotic relations between roots and fungi (mycorrhizas) are the most prevalent symbiotic systems on earth. For example, mycorrhizas increase nutrient uptake from the soil, assist in the biocontrol of pathogenic fungi and nematodes, and have a positive effect on the establishment of plant communities. Mycorrhizal associations can be found in all ecosystems and in important forest and crop species. This book provides a summary of all the mycorrhizal categories from a morphological and anatomical perspective. It is beautifully illustrated with color illustrations, photographs, and scanning electron micrographs.

Book Description
In fascinating new contextual readings of four of Herman Melville's novels--Typee, White-Jacket, Moby-Dick, and Pierre--Samuel Otter delves into Melville's exorbitant prose to show how he anatomizes ideology, making it palpable and strange. Otter portrays Melville as deeply concerned with issues of race, the body, gender, sentiment, and national identity. He articulates a range of contemporary texts (narratives of travelers, seamen, and slaves; racial and aesthetic treatises; fiction; poetry; and essays) in order to flesh out Melville's discursive world.
Otter presents Melville's works as "inside narratives" offering material analyses of consciousness. Chapters center on the tattooed faces in Typee, the flogged bodies in White-Jacket, the scrutinized heads in Moby-Dick, and the desiring eyes and eloquent, constricted hearts of Pierre. Otter shows how Melville's books tell of the epic quest to know the secrets of the human body. Rather than dismiss contemporary beliefs about race, self, and nation, Melville inhabits them, acknowledging their appeal and examining their sway.
Meticulously researched and brilliantly argued, this groundbreaking study links Melville's words to his world and presses the relations between discourse and ideology. It will deeply influence all future studies of Melville and his work.
Customer Reviews:
A literary and historical study of Melville's early novels........1999-10-16
In stark and refreshing contrast to much contemporary literary criticism that overlooks the historical contexts in which literature is produced, Otter's book embraces both a sophisticated theoretical perspective AND evinces a firm grasp of the political, social, and economic context that colored Melville's perceptions and his art. Written in clear, concise, and readable prose, Otter's book should become a major influence shaping future studies of Melville's works. Historians of the intellectual climate of nineteenth century antebellum America will also find this book insightful and valuable.

Book Description
This valuable new addition to Melville studies offers a ground-breaking interpretation of Melville's last published novel, one of the most complex texts in American literature and a work that has long been noted for the divergent critical views it has elicited. Reading the novel as a generic hybrid of narrative satire and apolyptic vision, Cook situates the novel in its implicit theological, historical, and biographical contexts: he examines the novel's relation to Melville's heterodox ideas of the deity, to the increasingly commercialized cultural milieu of antebellum America, and to Melville's own life and literary career. Uncovering a wealth of new data on the novel's satirical applications, including its covert use of Melville's friends and family for character models, Cook offers a compelling reading of The Confidence-Man - one that is sure to influence our future conception of its creator.
