    Book Description

Sexual harassment is the fastest-growing category of employment litigation in the United States. At the root of recent class actions against several major corporations and the subject of three significant Supreme Court decisions during 1998, sexual harassment litigation is an area of legal practice where much remains unsettled and few claims can be confidently met with established defenses or remedies. Because of its potential for ad hoc outcomes that lead to ever-greater legal instability, the question of sexual harassment in the workplace requires sustained attention by policymakers in both business and government and by academics. It was in order to promote this crucial endeavor that New York University's Annual Conference on Labor for 1999 chose this issue as its theme. This long-standing, influential conference is the premier forum for bringing together legal practitioners, academics and researchers, government officials, representatives of companies and labor unions, and human resources specialists to explore solutions to problems in the American workplace. This valuable symposium addresses such provocative questions as: + To what extent can sexual harassment claims be meaningfully addressed by existing laws such as the National Labor Relations Act and state and federal anti-discrimination statutes? + Are employer sexual harassment policy initiatives on a collision course with the First Amendment? + What rights do accused employees have? + When are employers liable for sexual harassment? + Can investigations of sexual harassment claims be conducted meaningfully without violating legitimate confidentiality privileges? + Is company systemic relief possible through negotiated resolutions? Sexual Harassment in the Workplace also includes insightful discussions of the valuable role that social science methodologies and alternative dispute resolution techniques can play in fostering an environment where sexual harassment is better understood and effectively dealt with. For employment law practitioners and academics, business executives, human resource managers, and government labor regulators, these papers provide a valuable cross-disciplinary perspective on one of today's most urgent workplace issues.

Al Ehrbar says there's a more meaningful way to gauge a company's performance than by quarterly earnings or other traditional yardsticks. It's called EVA, or economic value added, and it's helped turn companies like Coca-Cola into great engines of profit for shareholders. In EVA: The Real Key to Creating Wealth, Ehrbar describes how the formula works and how it can determine how efficient your company really is.

Unlike other financial ratios like EPS, or earnings per share, and ROE, or return on equity, EVA takes into account a critical factor: the cost of capital, or how much it costs to produce $1 in profit. Other measurements can be misleading because they show profits without deducting the price of producing them--a company that spends $1 to earn $1 could still appear profitable. As a result, Ehrbar says, those ratios can often show "accounting profits" rather than true profits as does EVA.

Ehrbar, a former editor and writer at such publications as Fortune and the Wall Street Journal, builds a convincing case for EVA. Take Wal-Mart vs. Kmart in the 1980s, Ehrbar writes. By traditional accounting measures, Kmart appeared to be the more profitable company, with an average gross profit margin of about 29 percent, while Wal-Mart's was only about 23 percent. But over the decade, Kmart's market value plummeted and Wal-Mart's surged. "So why was Wal-Mart a winner and Kmart a loser? Because Wal-Mart was using its capital more efficiently," Ehrbar writes, with higher sales per square foot of space and lower inventory as percentage of sales than Kmart. While EVA is geared for corporate managers, investors also will find a comprehensive method for judging a company's value. --Dan Ring

    Book Description

Called "today's hottest financial idea and getting hotter" by fortune magazine, Economic Value Added (EVA) is the topic of conversation in financial circles around the world, from Germany and Japan to Singapore and South Africa. A revolutionary strategy for creating corporate and shareholder wealth that measures a company's real profitability, it has been adopted by such prominent corporations as Coca-Cola, Eli Lilly, and Siemens AG-with spectacular financial results. Yet, despite its increasing visibility, most executives still only have a vague notion of what EVA is and what it can do for their company. This groundbreaking book explains and clarifies all. Written by Al Ehrbar, a leading business journalist and senior vice president at EVA inventor Stern Stewart & Co., EVA: The Real Key to Creating Wealth provides a complete, accessible overview that examines how exactly EVA works, how it is measured, what it can do to structure incentives for employees, and why it is as potent as it is.

At its most basic, Economic Value Added is a measure of corporate performance that differs from most others by charging profit for the cost of all the capital a company employs, including equity. To help translate principle into real-world practice, Ehrbar presents revealing case histories of EVA success stories, including those of Briggs & Stratton, the U.S. Postal Service, and Coca-Cola, which was catapulted from mediocrity to the number one wealth creator in the world with the addition of EVA.

An in-depth look at a breakthrough idea whose impact is being felt from corporate boardrooms to Wall Street, this indispensable book is must reading for business leaders looking to fully grasp-and profit from-"the real key to creating wealth."

how could someone give it a five stars rating when in fact there is nothing in this book that really tell you much about eva except the fact that it improves company performance, not the how and why,

    1 out of 5 stars Give me a break!.......2002-11-28

I bought this book based on the glowing reviews below, but as it turned out, the only reveiwer telling the truth was the one who calls this book a big commercial for Stern-Stewart.

Yes, EVA is a valuable, useful tool that has brought accounting out of the dark ages, but you already knew that -- that's why you're looking for books on EVA, right? Unfortunately, this particular book goes to a lot of trouble to try to convince you of what I just stated in the previous sentence. There. Now you don't need to buy this book.

I wish I could tell you which book to buy about how to practically implement EVA in your company, but, unfortunately, I'm still looking for a book that does that.

5 out of 5 stars Easy, simple, understandable to anyone.......2001-04-11

Al's book is a great collection of successfull EVA case studies. It is not intended to be "The EVA book" for financiers. It does what it is supposed to do: Give simple and powerfull examples on the concepts and applicability of EVA to real world companies. One of the strongest aspects of the book is to give examples of EVA implementation on a broad set of industries. The case of US Postal Service is especially powerfull.

1 out of 5 stars A commercial for Stern Stewart. Not much content........1999-06-18

The book was more a commercial for the consulting firm of Stern Stewart than a book with real content for those looking to understand EVA. While some of the real-life examples were interesting, the book tended to drone on. The EVA "revolution" they spoke to seems less a revolution than a few managements doing the right thing and aligning employee and corporate goals. It's interesting that a couple of firms they cite adopting EVA have run into recent trouble with one, Harnischfeger, filing Chapter 11.

4 out of 5 stars Great approach to the EVA concept but lack in finances........1999-05-12

I had a great approach to EVA concept but it too much simple in finances. Any way it is a good point to start the trip through the EVA world.

    Book Description

From Eves indiscretions in Eden to the terrifying tales of the flood, from Abrahams decision to sacrifice his son to the sins of the cities Sodom and Gomorrah, the Book of Genesis has been the worlds most widely read narrative, cautioning and challenging humankind for thousands of years. Now, one of the bestknown litigators of the 20th century turns his attention to these seminal stories. Through 10 provocative narratives, Dershowitz provides critical insight into the beginnings of law that gave rise to the Ten Commandments, positing that the Good Book is also a law book.

    Download Description

    · Cain murders his brother--and walks . . .· God gets angry--and millions die in flood . . .· Abraham commits attempted murder--and is praised . . .· Jacob deceives his father, then robs his brother--and gets away with it . . .Who among us has not questioned the "justice" found in the Book of Genesis? Now Alan M. Dershowitz, one of our most brilliant legal minds and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller Chutzpah , casts new light on these ancient tales. What he finds is . . . THE GENESIS OF JUSTICE Violence, lust, deception, murder, incest, and vengeance: These are the subjects of the biggest--and perhaps the juiciest--bestseller of all time, the Book of Genesis. Its oft-told tales have inspired and challenged humankind for generations. But perhaps never before has anyone examined these stories so provocatively from a modern legal perspective. Based on Alan Dershowitz's class at Harvard Law School, The Genesis of Justice shows how the Good Book is also a remarkable law book. According to Dershowitz, these seminal stories describe a people--and a God--struggling in a world before the invention of systematic rules, a primal place that predates our notions of fairness, honesty, and rights. Yet here in Genesis we can see these concepts--and the need for them and for their embodiment in a formal legal system--evolving in front of our eyes. Using ten of the most intriguing biblical narratives and drawing on not only his own observations but those of biblical commentators throughout the ages, Dershowitz evaluates the actions of biblical heroes, even God Himself. And together with concluding discussions on "The Injustice of Genesis," he shows us how the flawed behavior of its flawed protagonists led to the Ten Commandments and a deeper, richer sense of justice than any mere legal code could ever provide. From the time he was a kid--and was nearly tossed out of Hebrew school for asking one pesky question after another--

5 out of 5 stars Questions you were afraid to ask about the book of Gen.......2005-05-25

Dershowitz brings his long experience as a a lawyer to discuss the apparently overwhelming INjustice in the book of Genesis.

A can't miss for anyone who takes the Bible seriously, or wonders why others do.

    1 out of 5 stars worst book I've read.......2004-04-26

This is perhaps the worst book I've ever read. Dershowitz is a fundamentalist when interpreting the Bible. Therefore, he assumes that each and every story happened just as the Bible relates it. Since this is a severe improbability, if not impossibility, the whole premise of the book is incorrect. From this, Dershowitz makes the argument that God is not omniscient, omnipotent, or even capable of making just decisions. He argues that God is fallible and that it is our responsibility to "call" God on His injustices. Had I understood this was the angle of the book, I would have never picked it up in the first place. Overall, it was a monumental waste of time because the book does not contain any new or useful information, much less any interesting viewpoints.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging and Entertaining..........2001-09-11

For those with an open mind and a thirst for new Biblical insights, this book is a delight. It is just what you might expect from a brilliant legal mind, and more. Alan Dershowitz shares his research and analysis in an engaging and entertaining style on a subject for which he obviously has a tremendous passion.
Maimonides, Soren Kierkegaard, Abraham Ibn Ezra, Franz Kafka, Blaise Pascal, Everett Fox, and Bob Dylan are just a small handful of the voices invited to the party. The genius of this work is that while it presents so many different viewpoints (without necessarily adopting one "correct" interpretation over another), Dershowitz is still able to clearly show the reader that within the complex and confusing assortment of narratives that is Genesis, there exists a straightforward path toward the Law. This path, while full of injustice along the way, does not merely show us the need for the Law; it shows a developing legal system in process.
No matter how familiar you may think you are with the book of Genesis, you will be able to experience the narratives afresh. Dershowitz holds up the book of Genesis like a crystal in sunlight, its beauty seen in the reflections of light, observed at a number of different angles.

5 out of 5 stars Sounds of Silence.......2001-09-11

Back in the 1960's, the Beatles wrote and produced a song whose title is uniquely fitting for this book by Dershowitz, the "Sounds of Silence." I saw the book in the bookstore recently and being familiar with Constitutional Law theory for which Dershowitz is most noted among the legal community, I was interested to see how he treated the topics of the Ten Commandments and the dilemma of the Madonna vs the Prostitute in religious dogma as it affects our laws now.

What I found was a most enthusiastic treatment of consequence where Dershowitz has outdone himself in addressing some of our most difficult moral problems rooted in our Biblical heritage to which we seem to cling with near steadfast loyalty.

I actually think this book outperforms the work of Dershowitz in Constitutional Law since he is clearly enthralled by the topics, and his combination of legal and religious knowledge offer remarkably logical analysis in why we think as we do, and whether it is appropriate to think as we do. He has used his logical and linguistic skills very effectively to illuminate subjects that need a rational approach. If anything, he may not go far enough in relation to his analysis of the double standard that so affects the female in our culture as it relates to the economics of power and social freedom, but which also affects males due to their loss of equivalent resources from combining their talents in a life alliance. The aggregation of resources does not necessarily produce the benefits it should due to the low wages and glass ceilings their women cannot penetrate. It appears to be a very valuable read and a thoughtful, unique analysis of our human condition. I think he should do more since revelations like his can help to break "the sounds of silence" that such injustices rely upon to maintain the status quo.

2 out of 5 stars An "Interesting Commentary".......2001-08-09

Dershowitz argues that Genesis shows God evolving from an arbitrary being, dictating ad-hoc rules to a mature being bound by the rule of law. Dershowitz's "evolving-God" argument underlies his theme that Genesis is a metaphor showing how legal systems generally evolve from arbitrary rules to the mature rule of law. (pp. 14, 203-215.)

I question the validity of Dershowitz's argument that Genesis depicts God as evolving from an arbitrary dictator to a "constitutional monarch, binding himself to rules" (p. 210.)

The seeds for deconstructing Dershowitz's evolving-God argument are found in the story which he refers to as his guiding principal in writing his book. Two great rabbis, both experts on Maimonides, die and go to heaven, where they continue to argue about an inconsistency between one Maimonidean text and another. Maimonides himself resolves the conflict by pointing out a simple transcription error in one of the texts-that is, the Rabbis are arguing about a text Maimonides did not actually write. The rabbis hear this simple solution to their argument and dismiss Maimonides altogether, stating that their debate involving an error-ridden text is much more interesting than contemplating the meaning of an accurate text. (pp. 15-16.)

In this story, the privileged concept is debate for debate's sake. So it for Dershowitz, who repeatedly states he is not looking for answers but "interesting commentary" (16, 33.) Debate for debate's sake.

The concept Dershowitz suppresses is the question of Textual Accuracy. That is, does the text Dershowitz quotes accurately recount the revelations from God which the recipients originally put to paper? "For purposes of this book, it does not matter whether Genesis was dictated to Moses by God or compiled by an editor from multiple sources." (p. 14.)

But of course it matters. For example, Dershowitz wallows in juvenile joy about stumping a teacher with questions of Cain's wife. (There is no reference in Genesis to any female children being born of Adam and Eve, so where did Cain's wife come from?) Nahum M. Sarna argues that the passage regarding Cain's wife "cannot be other than a fragment of what was once a well-known and fuller story, now etched in the barest outline." (JPS Torah Commentary, Genesis, p. 45.) Is it so difficult to think that Adam and Eve bore girls, one of whom grew into a woman and married Cain? Just because Dershowitz's version of Genesis does not mention the birth of girls does not mean they were not born. To state otherwise-as Dershowitz does (p. 5)-is to be as fundamentalist as any fundamentalist he criticizes. "My version of Genesis says it (or does not say it). I believe it. Case closed." (p. 8.)

Questions of Textual Accuracy make all the difference for purposes of Dershowitz's book and for biblical scholarship generally. If Dershowitz's Genesis text is inaccurate, then all we are left with is a man who takes an error-ridden, fictional text, makes clever comments about it, adds clever titles, and tries to pass the whole thing off as serious midrash. It is exactly like the two rabbis who continue their silly debate even after the truth is revealed to them.

Several times, Dershowitz approaches the issue of Textual Accuracy, only to dance around it. For example, consider what he says about whether justice is found in this world or the next (ellipsis omitted): "It is untrue to the text of Genesis to read into punishment threatened here and now an implicit postponement to a world to come. It is also a far less interesting answer. It is far more interesting to search for enduring interpretations based on what was believed at the time, not centuries later." (p. 33.) This statement is packed with problems.

First, Dershowitz argues that we must take the text in the context of the beliefs of those who wrote it. But to take the text in context is precisely to ask crucial questions as to who in fact wrote the text, when it was written, what they wrote, and whether what we have reflects what they wrote and what they believed! But remember, Dershowitz says these questions are exactly what is not important for his book. (p. 14.) Well, are they or not?

Ultimately, questions of context (authorship and accuracy) are precisely the ones Dershowitz must suppress, because they may in fact prove that his reading of Genesis is the one that is untrue, that his own centuries-later interpretation of the context is actually not what the authors of Genesis believed at all.

Dershowitz's insistence that his book is not part of the debate regarding Textual Accuracy, but rather "how we are to understand the stories" will not do, for how are we possibly to understand these "sacred stories" (p. 8) if the stories are incomplete and inaccurate?

This book convinces me that for Dershowitz God is nothing more than a metaphor, and therefore questions of Textual Accuracy really are irrelevant. Dershowitz is interested only in using the metaphor of God and a particular text to engage in an interesting intellectual game. Dershowitz really is like the two rabbis debating the faulty Maimonidean text. The truth is irrelevant. All that matters is the debate, gaining power in the community, and making some money.

For me though, questions of God's existence and nature are not a game-not a commodity to be bartered. For me, the Bible is a record of a living God's revelations to specific individuals. To me, as to Sarna and other commentators, it is clear that the full record of these revelations has been lost and what we do have has been terribly tampered with. Questions regarding Textual Accuracy are indispensable to determining who God is. Thus I struggle with the texts and contexts, and my struggles reveal a mountain of hard evidence that, contrary to Dershowitz's view, the living God is more than some "student in the university of the universe."

    Book Description

    Cain murders his brother--and walks
God gets angry--millions die in flood
Jacob robs brother--and gets away with it

Every weekend, in our synagogues and churches, our children are told stories from the Bible-stories of Abraham and Noah, Jacob and Joseph. But what are these stories really about? In this probing, fascinating, and entertaining book, America's leading lawyer looks at the Bible--and in particular at the Book of Genesis--as a tale of justice done, justice undone, and justice in the eyes of the beholder.

What if an angel hadn't stopped Abraham from sacrificing his son Isaac? What does Genesis seem to be telling us about taking revenge? Or even about capital punishment? Drawing on biblical criticism from throughout the ages and his own actual court battles, Dershowitz shines a brilliant legal light on the stories that comprise the foundation of our society. What he reveals is how our shared tradition has formed our attitude toward modern-day justice--and why we are all engaged in a never-ending quest to separate right from wrong.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart.......2004-02-05

This is a well executed audio book a pleasure to listen to.

The author's view of God as a being who is learning how to deal with his creation and growing through trial and error (and thus establishing the process of common law) takes a little getting used to. However, the arguement is solid and thought provoking.

If you are coming at the book from a more fundamentalist viewpoint you are going to have to think about what the author is getting rather than dismiss it out of hand.

The book also provides a glimpse into the Jewish world view through the minor exploration of Jewish writings like the talmud and ancient Jewish thinkers.

It sounds dry and dusty by the author makes it interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Where Our Legal System Came From.......2002-06-03

Alan Dershowitz presents the origins of our legal system by comparing justice as experienced in the Book of Genesis with that our developing legal system. Regardless of what one's religious beliefs are, this book shows that Biblical study is relevant to all who want to truly understand the culture of our thinking especially when it comes to our concept of justice. This is an in-depth analysis of the topic which is clearly written and well documented. It is full of specific examples and good legal interpretation. Dershowitz is good at that!

            Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

                  Book Description

Understanding the structural and thermodynamic properties of surfaces, interfaces, and membranes is important for both fundamental and practical reasons. Important applications include coatings, dispersants, encapsulating agents, and biological materials. Soft materials, important in the development of new materials and the basis of many biological systems, cannot be designed using trial and error methods due to the multiplicity of components and parameters. While these systems can sometimes be analyzed in terms of microscopic mixtures, it is often conceptually simpler to regard them as dispersions and to focus on the properties of the internal interfaces found in these systems. The basic physics centers on the properties of quasi-two-dimensional systems embedded in the three-dimensional world, thus exhibiting phenomena that do not exist in bulk materials. This approach is the basis behind the theoretical presentation of Statistical Thermodynamics of Surfaces, Interfaces, and Membranes. The approach adapted allows one to treat the rich diversity of phenomena investigated in the field of soft matter physics (including both colloid/interface science as well as the materials and macromolecular aspects of biological physics) such as interfacial tension, the roughening transition, wetting, interactions between surfaces, membrane elasticity, and self-assembly. Presented as a set of lecture notes, this book is aimed at physicists, physical chemists, biological physicists, chemical engineers, and materials scientists who are interested in the statistical mechanics that underlie the macroscopic, thermodynamic properties of surfaces, interfaces, and membranes. 5 out of 5 stars The best soft matter introduction.......2002-10-16

This is the first book you should read about the subject. An intuitive introduction to the field by one of its masters.
Then, you may continue to Chaikin & Lubensky for the heavier,
more mathematical formalism. There is no subsequent for this lucid and joyous book.
                  Just buy it!

4 out of 5 stars great book, not difficult to read.......2000-04-03

The authors explain physical concepts very clearly and complicated mathematical approach is avoided. It is a must-have for soft matter scientists.

                    Book Description

It is with sheer delight that we follow the activities and development of this lady of high principles and prejudice, whose kind heart wins over a seemingly unrelenting nature. Moving and frightening scenes of the French Revolution also appear in this remarkable narrative. Five 90-minute cassettes.
