Book Description
Play Like a Man, Win Like a Woman, Gail Evans's first blockbuster book on getting ahead in business, was a New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and Business Week business bestseller. In her eagerly awaited new book, this powerhouse author-and CNN's first female executive vice president-takes her empowering approach to corporate success to the next level: It isn't enough for women to understand and learn men's rules-they must create their own. And the path to success begins with this single most important rule:
Evey time a woman succeeds in business, every other woman's chance of succeeding in business increases.
Every time a woman fails in business, every other woman's chance of failure increases.
Whether you're a top executive or an entry-level assistant, She Wins, You Win will give you the tactics and strategies (and a few controversial ideas along the way) you need to attain your career goals:
* How supporting each other paves the way for success
* The importance of being a team player-and how to set up your own winning team
* When it's okay to break the rules
* How to tap into the resources already at your disposal
* Discovering your rainmaking skills
* Sharing information
* Why women should forget networking and start "webbing"
* Women to watch out for-from "Queen Beas" to "Seniority Sues"
Customer Reviews:
Gail Evans Understands The Power of Team.......2007-01-23
Gail Evans has written a book that reminds women that teamwork can help them advance, and that every time a woman doesn't support another woman, she is hurting that woman, herself, and all other women. It's a premise that reminds us how impactful our actions can be. I loved the chapter that gave names to typical office characters who could learn to be better team players (but in the meantime, Evans wisely advises that you plain avoid them): Diane Drama, Polly Perfect, Helen Hoarder...You'll recognize them and be amused by her descriptions, and impressed with her prescriptions.
Women helping women.......2006-05-23
Very interesting take from Gail Evans on how women in corporate world should help each other. Her premise in this book is that we (women) still operate as individuals instead of teams. Women need to attend more power lunches where not only family and tennis lessons can be discussed, but business deals can be made too. In some instances, Ms. Evans is stretching the idea of every woman, helping every woman. Personally, I will help any person, regardless of their gender, if I see professional potential in them, humanity and humility in their behavior. Helping any woman regardless of their abilities just for the sake that there are a woman is a bit too much for me to accept. In general, I like helping people who will show gratitude and loyalty of some sort. In my opinion, that is the only way one can create a following and build successful teams and organizations.
Insightful!.......2004-08-06
Even if you're not a team player, this book will draft you in the first round. In plain language, author Gail Evans outlines the corporate playing field. She clearly marks the opponents, the cheerleaders and the goals women must conquer to score points in the corporate game. The book is at its best when Evans uses real-life examples to demonstrate the dramas, the discrimination and the disadvantages women face while working. Like a video of game highlights and lowlights, her examples are pulled from the pages of her own agenda book and e-mail box. She provides concrete tips to tell women how to establish and cultivate formal and informal networks. Although she does address the tug-of-war women survive while balancing home and work commitments, the book could have scored more points on the home front. Maybe Evans will do that for us next time - meanwhile, we recommend this book to women on all rungs of the corporate ladder.
Women helping women is good; it's not gender warfare.......2003-09-10
Gail Evans states, "I don't want you to stop helping deserving guys. I don't want you to feel like a bad person. I just want you to take care of other women. The boys are doing a great job of taking care of themselves already." Evans' book has made me realize the many times I've asked for a recommendation for a professional and have received the names of several men and no women. Because female professionals often don't self-promote, their names aren't on the tips of tongues as they deserve to be. Now, when I add, "Are there also any qualified women you'd recommend?" I usually receive at least one name. Women receive more than half of the college degrees and are now 46.5% of the workforce, but only 16% of upper management. Don't you think it's a good idea - for women and men - to make an attempt to include women in a pool of referrals? It's hard to believe this is considered gender warfare.
Women, empower thyselves!.......2003-05-16
As a progressive gen-X male, I have always wondered why the unprecedented level of opportunity for women in our society has translanted into equality of education and equal representation in the workforce, but not into equal pay for equal work or equal representation in the boardroom. Gail Evans not only offers an explanation; she tells her readers how to rectify the situation. She has been there, done that, and is spreading the word on how. This book is a great gift for any woman of ambition who is ready to help herself and other women overcome the final obstacles to gender equality.

Book Description
The world of quantitative finance (QF) is one of the fastest growing areas of research and its practical applications to derivatives pricing problem. Since the discovery of the famous Black-Scholes equation in the 1970's we have seen a surge in the number of models for a wide range of products such as plain and exotic options, interest rate derivatives, real options and many others. Gone are the days when it was possible to price these derivatives analytically. For most problems we must resort to some kind of approximate method.
In this book we employ partial differential equations (PDE) to describe a range of one-factor and multi-factor derivatives products such as plain European and American options, multi-asset options, Asian options, interest rate options and real options. PDE techniques allow us to create a framework for modeling complex and interesting derivatives products. Having defined the PDE problem we then approximate it using the Finite Difference Method (FDM). This method has been used for many application areas such as fluid dynamics, heat transfer, semiconductor simulation and astrophysics, to name just a few. In this book we apply the same techniques to pricing real-life derivative products. We use both traditional (or well-known) methods as well as a number of advanced schemes that are making their way into the QF literature:
- Crank-Nicolson, exponentially fitted and higher-order schemes for one-factor and multi-factor options
- Early exercise features and approximation using front-fixing, penalty and variational methods
- Modelling stochastic volatility models using Splitting methods
- Critique of ADI and Crank-Nicolson schemes; when they work and when they don't work
- Modelling jumps using Partial Integro Differential Equations (PIDE)
- Free and moving boundary value problems in QF
Included with the book is a CD containing information on how to set up FDM algorithms, how to map these algorithms to C++ as well as several working programs for one-factor and two-factor models. We also provide source code so that you can customize the applications to suit your own needs.

A practical approach to finite difference methods.......2006-11-10
This book proved to be a useful reference for practical implementation of finite-difference methods for PDEs: several one- and multi-factor financial derivatives pricing models, including local volatility models and models with stochastic volatilities. The methods described in the text are stable, accurate and reasonably efficient. Stability of FD methods is obviously of top concern to the author (as it should be to readers as well), and he goes into extensive detail evaluating the stability of various techniques. The writing is clear and consistent, though a "notational" index or glossary would have been helpful, particularly in the early going. The author provides several practical examples, which lends a refreshing degree of concreteness to the book.
Well Done.......2006-11-06
Daniel J.Duffy introduces Finite Difference methods for solving partial differential equations that arise in numerical pricing of derivatives. There are seven sections in the book. They are:
Part I The Continuous Theory of Partial Differential Equations - A short introduction to partial differential equations and their applications to financial engineering.
Part II Finite Difference Methods: the Fundamentals - There are three chapters that introduce Finite Difference methods to approximate initial value and initial boundary value problems. Another two chapters apply the methods to Black-Scholes equation. He did a nice job to approximate the solutions to problems with small volatility or large drift,...
Part III Applying FDM to One-Factor Instrument Pricing
Part IV FDM for Multidimensional problems
Part V Applying FDM to Multi-Factor Instrument Pricing and
Part VI Free and Moving Boundary Value Problems
There are altogether 18 chapters (about 180 pages) that thoroughly introduce the application of FDM techniques to a wide range of options (pricing) modelling. The exposition is clear and concise.
The last part
Part VII Design and implementation In C++ - The last four chapters design for readers having programming literacy.
To fully appreciate the materials of the book, readers should have at least one year training in partial differential equations and knowledge in financial derivatives at about the same level as John Hull's book - Options, Futures and Other Derivatives, 5e.
If the book contains a few applications to real world data, it will be perfect to primers in this field.

Having bought many books in Financial Engineering this is one of the most useful. The source code is atleast alot better than the other books that claim to be the best. I give this book 4 stars and recommend quants to buy this book.

Well Done.......2007-07-18
This is a GREAT book... if you are looking for treatment of "options pricing" from 2 specific perspectives.
Primo, the authors tackle the pricing issue using PDEs only, paying no attention to the probabilistic approach. This sometimes makes the treatment a little dry and leaves aside the possibly more interesting and certainly more intuitive alternative. The PDE method is however VERY powerful and once well mastered, provides a direct path to numerical difference methods, the only "real life" solution for most pricing problems.
Secundo, in a second part, specific numerical techniques for solving the PDEs are thoroughly explained. No code is provided, but the mathematical procedures are very well laid out, which makes the book a gem for practitioners tackling specific problems or looking for clues on how to solve practical issues.
Overall, I found that the monograph was a lot more mathematically detailed than most other books on the market, while being relatively good at clearly highlighting while certain issues are problematic and constantly keeping the big picture in perspective.
Somewhat surprisingly for a first edition and given the sometimes complex equations, the editing is very tight (good English, few typos) and the incremental steps are well balanced in terms of providing enough information for reader to easily fill the gaps.
Overall, a very good book. Kudos !!

The term common good makes libertarians cringe, because they view it as a catch-all excuse for governments to increase the power of the state. America's foremost libertarian legal mind, Richard Epstein, addresses these worries, acknowledging a tension between personal freedom and social goals, while suggesting that they can be mutually reinforcing: "Laissez-faire is best understood not as an effort to glorify the individual at the expense of society, but as the embodiment of principles that, when consistently applied, will work to the advantage of all (or almost all) members of society simultaneously."
Epstein is a powerful reasoner, and even skeptical readers will find themselves slowly drawn down a libertarian path. Principles for a Free Society contains a storehouse of detailed information about human nature and the motives of state authority. Epstein deserves a place on the bookshelf beside Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman. --John J. Miller
Customer Reviews:
Another gem by Richard Epstein.......2002-08-29
Richard Epstein (author of "Takings" & "Forbidden Grounds") offers up this collection of essays on why economic liberty works for the benefit of virtually everyone, while planned economies don't.
Epstein is a brilliant logician and wordsmith who can draw even the most skeptical into his web of reason. He doesn't argue that free market liberalism is best because it is the most moral, but because it simply works the best.
Here he delves into human nature, the motivation for increasing government authority (power & control) and the impetus for altruism. "Principles for a Free Society" is a powerfully persuasive argument in defense of economic liberty and against the expansion of the government.
A must for every civics class.......2002-07-05
Richard Epstein, a law professor at The University of Chicago, is more than a legal expert. He is a scholar and theorist presenting his distinctive libertarian interpretation of the appropriate role of government in a free society.
In each chapter, Epstein discusses a principle of interest to him and to society. He reviews the balance between the need for personal liberty and common good. Overwhelmingly, he documents the history of our society as one where changing legal/societal standards have reduced personal liberties. To illustrate, he uses real examples such as Social Security, zoning, and organ transplants that show how the changes negatively affects peoples' lives.
I was most intrigued by Epstein's reasoning in his writings about altruism. I must admit that I would fall into the pessimistic camp that believes that altruism is usually egoism/self-interest in disguise)
As he notes in the introduction, the book is a collection of his thoughts and essays over his career. As a result, he does not really tie the thoughts together except for an introduction and epilogue, which emphasize the desire to return to a more laissez-faire society.
Very thought provoking.......2000-02-22
This book could be better organized than it is -- sometimes it seems Epstein wants to give us a complete, systematic statement of his life's work as a legal theorist, whereas at other times he seeems content to think of this book as a series of loosely related explorations or essays.
The organizational problem explains why I can't give this five stars. But I can enthusiastically give it four. The critique of the positivistic jurisprudence of H.L.A. Hart (pp. 50-54) puts more of value in five pages than many authors can put in a whole book!

Book Description
While the human eye can practically cope only with two aspects of light, brightness and colour, many animals use polarization as a further source of visual information. The text starts with an introduction into imaging polarimetry, an efficient technique for measuring light polarization, and moves onto a description of the various polarization patterns occurring in nature, such as celestial polarization.
The major part of the book is dedicated to the fascinating question: How do animals use polarization patterns? Following a compendium of the physiology of polarization sensitivity, several case studies are presented, such as honeybees or ants using polarized light as a compass or aquatic animals orientating by the underwater polarization. Further, it is explained how man-made objects affecting the natural optical environment may disorientate animals. For instance, as in the case where oil or glass surfaces can be more attractive for water-seeking polarotactic insects than the water surface.

The key to understanding..........2003-05-06
I'm writing this review because the low rating this study guide currently has stunned me. This book is an incredible resource. However, it is to be utilized if and only if the textbook, "Physics or Scientists and Engineers" is used as well.
The guide for each chapter of the textbook available in this study guide begins with an introduction discussing the general goals of the chapter. Then the major equations and concepts of the chapter are summarized. Some suggestions, skills, and strategies are then presented, and a review checklist is provided that lists the concepts you should be able to describe after studying the chapter.
After the guide for each chapter is the solutions manual for selected problems in the textbook. Each one of the solutions has in depth explanation and step-by-step conceptual and mathematical guidance that are very easy to understand. Many solutions are set up according to the "GOAL" problem solving steps: Gather information, Organize your approach, Analyze the problem, and Learn from your efforts (how to check your work). Every solution in the manual presents a different direction from which to view some concept of physics.
The set of two study guides (this and volume 1) greatly facilitate the comprehension of the text itself. They also provide quick, easy review for a test or exam the next morning that you haven't studied for. Highly recommended and deserving of all 5 stars.

Never take notes in your physics class again.......2001-02-03
This book is basically a collection of notes about Tipler's Physics for Scientist and Engineers Volume 1 chapters 1-21. It has example problems and outlines fundamental ideas from the main text. I find it very useful since most of the time I can read the 5-6 pages of overview and do all the homework. If I get stuck I can usually find an example problem in the study guide to help me along.
