1 out of 5 stars Waste of paper.......2003-12-22

I think positive reviews for these books come from "Vault Staff" The book is tiny and thin, with doublespaced paragraphs to attempt to beef it up. So, each page is in this book has approximately 1/3 of a page's worth of information.

Having said that, we are treated to about 20 pages of information on the financial industry. We are treated to information like "the stock market is where shares of stock - pieces of ownership in companies - are traded every day." No mention of currency markets.

Then, we have 30 pages listing the jobs. The jobs listed include "trader" and each of one, yes one SHORT paragraph describing what they do.

Finally, a list of investment banks (Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley) with a 1 to 3 pages describing what it's like to work there (long hours).

Most of this information is common knowledge to people who have half a clue about the industry - TIAA pays less than Goldman: who knew?

One great thing about this book is the advertisements: Not just for other Vault products and sites, but for a few investment banks and recruiters - this may be be the opportunity the readers are hoping for.

        5 out of 5 stars highly recommended.......2001-10-28

I don't normally write reviews, but I just got this book and had to write. The book has detailed insider accounts of life inside every major investment banking firms, including its history, areas of specialization, and tips on the hiring and interviewing process. Highly recommended for job seekers and consultants alike.

5 out of 5 stars Essential resource for banking jobs.......2001-09-09

I found this book to be immensely helpful to distinguishing the various investment banks and commercial banks. There are also specific tips for each company on what they look for in the job interview. Particularly as wall street is downsizing, I think the Vault book provided me with the edge I needed to land my job in a tough job market.

with a new introduction by the author

                foreword by THOMAS EMERSON

"A thought-provoking interpretation of the role of the legal ideology in the bourgeoisie'sascendance to state power."
                --Harvard Law Review

Originally published in 1977 and translated into Spanish, Portugese, Greek, and Chinese, Law and the Rise of Capitalism examines the role of law and lawyers in the European bourgeoisie's conquest of power. From the scattered urban uprisings of the eleventh century to the English and French revolutions, Michael Tigar traces this history using charters, letters, statutes, and other primary sources.

Against a backdrop of seven hundred years of bourgeois struggle, Tigar weaves a Marxist theory of law and jurisprudence based upon the Western experience. Contradicting R.H. Tawney and Max Weber, he shows that the legal theory of the insurgent bourgeoisie predated the Protestant Reformation and was a major ideological ingredient of the bourgeois revolution and also helps explain today's revolutionary movements.

In a compelling new introduction, Tigar discusses the struggle for human rights in the historical context of the past two decades, drawing on his own experiences as a fighter for democratic rights in the United States, Europe and South Africa.

                Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Law and ideology in the time of the rise of capital.......2007-03-27

I bought this book by radical lawyer Michael Tigar, expecting it to be a typical critique of liberal interpretations of law in the past two centuries, of the kind so well summarized by Anatole France's famous statement that the majestic equality of the law forbids both the rich and the poor to sleep under bridges, beg, and steal bread. However, this turned out not to be the case. Instead, the book is an engrossing and fascinating look into the development of bourgeois law and legal ideology from the late feudal period (roughly 13th century) to the French Revolution. In this way, "Law and the Rise of Capitalism" is rather a chronological prequel to those many critiques.

Although hampered by the lack of footnotes, the historical overview, especially of the medieval period, is very thorough and well done. It is extremely informative and once again reaffirms the degree to which the popular view of the middle ages as a time of nothing but chaos and barbarism is incorrect. Heavily relying on medieval scholars of law like Beaumanoir, Michael Tigar shows how the development of merchant capital and the independence of the towns created the opportunity for law merchant to be created, which in turn could become the basis, combined with certain Roman law principles, for a modern legal system based on property and free contracts rather than custom and commons. For each period of time he demonstrates how this development continued and was framed in legal terms, at least as regards the societies of England and France (he barely mentions anything else, except Italian banking).

Tigar develops some well-argued theses on the transition from feudalism to capitalist society via merchant capital, and locates the start of this transition (initially with a false start crushed by recession and the Plague) much earlier than is usually done. He also refutes the popular idea of law after the French Revolution being utterly different from that before, instead emphasizing the way the French Revolution was the expression of a change long coming. Equally, he argues against the conception of English common law as a gradual building of the same basic pattern, showing instead how common law underwent changes towards a capitalist law system just as much as the more formal codes of France.

The concluding chapters give some leftist criticism of modern theories of law and restate Tigar's purpose in writing this book. Most of this is superficial and rather pointless. In fact, the book would probably have been stronger when formed as simply a book on the history of law, then with some radical contemporary critique tacked on. But nevertheless, this book is much worth reading.

                        Book Description

Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) are becoming more and more widely used in a braod range of fields, including telecommunications, optical computing, consumer electronics, laser material processing and the biomedical sciences, to manipulate light through micro-optical systems. In order to get the most out of such DOEs, knowledge of the design process, fabrication, packaging in a particular system, and operation is required.

Digital Diffractive Optics discusses in detail the design and simulation of DOEs, before considering the main fabrication techniques. The increasingly important CAD/CAM tool requirements for the production of DOEs are covered, and a chapter is devoted to the crucial area of systematic fabrication error compensation. Finally, the integration and use of DOEs in a number of different systems, including various opto-electronic and opto-mechanical systems, are discussed.

Digital Diffractive Optics will be of great interest to all those involved in the fields of optical engineering and photonics. It presents a clear view of the whole process, from design to fabrication and application, without overstressing the, often complex, mathematics, and will thus be accessible to postgraduate students and those entering the field, as well as more experienced engineers and scientists.

5 out of 5 stars Modern, Straight Forward and Useful Optics Book.......2001-09-30

I've been designing diffractive elements for about two years. I first started knowing almost nothing about DOEs (except that they worked on diffraction). Even after two years, and a couple of successful designs, I was still in the dark on some of the methods used in designing DOEs.

Bernard really puts a good book together. He starts with the very basics (diffraction), moves into designing DOEs (iterative and natural optimization methods, like GA and SA), and ends up with chapters on actually fabricating devices. He covers in very informative detail (like, say for the working engineer), and goes short of giving the shop away.

If you're tired of attending seminars on designing DOEs that just cover fourier diffraction principles, or books that really leave out the nitty-gritty, then Bernard's book is for you. There is an assumption that you have a decent understanding of optics, and are comfortable with at least two years of college math (calculus and DEs/PDEs).

                        Book Description

CAMD or Computer Aided Molecular Design refers to the design of molecules with desirable properties. That is, through CAMD, one determines molecules that match a specified set of (target) properties. CAMD as a technique has a very large potential as in principle, all kinds of chemical, bio-chemical and material products can be designed through this technique.

This book mainly deals with macroscopic properties and therefore does not cover molecular design of large, complex chemicals such as drugs. While books have been written on computer aided molecular design relating to drugs and large complex chemicals, a book on systematic formulation of CAMD problems and solutions, with emphasis on theory and practice, which helps one to learn, understand and apply the technique is currently unavailable.

                        · This title brings together the theoretical aspects related to Computer Aided Molecular Design, the different techniques that have been developed and the different applications that have been reported.
                        · Contributing authors are among the leading researchers and users of CAMD

I found Mr. Acnenie's text to be very interesting and thought provoking. It's the way Mr. Acnenie has unique ways of covering
Computer Molecular Design, that if a person doesn't comprehend a specific part of the text;there is always other explanations in its simplicity to back his theories up with. I srongly reccomend the vast majority of free thinkers, who would want to absorb the knowledge Mr. Achiene is offering, than you shoul purchase this book on Amazon. One of the best information texts I have ever read!

                              Book Description

The computer-aided design of novel molecular systems has undoubtedly reached the stage of a mature discipline offering a broad range of tools available to virtually any chemist. However, there are few books coveringmost of these techniques in a single volume and using a language which may generally be understood by students or chemists with a limited knowledge of theoretical chemistry. The purpose of this book is precisely to review, in such a language, both methodological aspects and important applications of computer-aided molecular design (CAMD), with a special emphasis on drug design and protein modeling.
Using numerous examples ranging from molecular models to shapes, surfaces, and volumes, Computer-Aided Molecular Design provides coverage of the role molecular graphics play in CAMD. The text also treats the very notion of the structure of molecular systems by presenting both the various experimental techniques giving access to it and the most common model builders based on force fields. Separate chapters are devoted to other important topics in CAMD, such as Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics simulations; most common quantum chemical methods; derivation and visualization of molecular properties; and molecular similarity. Finally, strategies used in protein modeling and drug design, such as receptor mapping and the pharmacophore approach, are presented and illustrated by several examples.
The book is addressed to students and researchers who wish to enter this new exciting field of molecular sciences, but also practitioners in CAMD as a comprehensive source of refreshing information in their field.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A760933. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The CJCS Joint Training Program institutes methods for identifying training requirements through review of the CINCs' missions and the compilation of Joint Mission Essential Task Lists (JMETLs). The Universal Joint Task List (UJTL) comprehensively outlines these joint essential tasks, providing a summary of CINC Missions, Joint Tasks, and supporting tasks. Computer aided exercises (CAXs) are tools available for monitoring and training staffs in these tasks. A primary goal during a CAX is to present a realistic decision environment to the training audience in order to produce realistic results. This thesis develops an analysis methodology for using exercise data to evaluate critical event causal audit trails. Specific objectives are: (1) to develop methodologies to objectively analyze the causes for critical events, and (2) to demonstrate the effectiveness of these methodologies through the use of the Joint Theater Level Simulation (JTLS). This thesis develops post-exercise analysis techniques for output data and provides a methodology for extracting appropriate data from a CAX. The results of a given CAX will then be more compatible with additional analysis techniques, such as trend analysis, and more useful and timely feedback can be provided to participants.

                                        Book Description

This book provides an introductory yet comprehensive account of James Clerk Maxwell's (1831-79) physics and world view. The argument is structured by a focus on the fundamental themes that shaped Maxwell's science: analogy and geometry, models and mechanical explanation, statistical representation and the limitations of dynamical reasoning, and the relation between physical theory and its mathematical description. This approach, which considers his physics as a whole, bridges the disjunction between Maxwell's greatest contributions: the concept of the electromagnetic field and the kinetic theory of gases. Maxwell's work and ideas are viewed historically in terms of his indebtedness to scientific and cultural traditions, of Edinburgh experimental physics, and of Cambridge mathematics and philosophy of science, which nurtured his career. Peter M. Harman is Professor of the History of Science at Lancaster University. He has published primarily on the history of physics and natural philosophy in the 18th and 19th centuries, the period from Newton to Maxwell. His previous books include Energy, Force, and Matter (Cambridge, 1982), The Investigation of Difficult Things (Cambridge, 1992), After Newton: Essays on Natural Philosophy (Variorum, 1993), The Scientific Letters and Papers of James Clerk Maxwell, volume 1 (Cambridge, 1990), volume 2 (Cambridge, 1995).
