Book Description

David Harvey is the most influential geographer of our era, possessing a reputation that extends across the social sciences and humanities. Spaces of Capital, a collection of seminal articles and new essays spanning three decades, demonstrates why his work has had-and continues to have-such a major impact.
The book gathers together some of Harvey's best work on two of his central concerns: the relationship between geographical thought and political power as well as the capitalist production of space. In addition, he chips away at geography's pretenses of "scientific" neutrality and grounds spatial theory in social justice. Harvey also reflects on the work and careers of little-noticed or misrepresented figures in geography's intellectual history-Kant, Von Thünen, Humboldt, Lattimore, Hegel, Heidegger, Darwin, Malthus, Foucault and many others. Via this exploration of geography's intellectual lineage, he underscores its significance for all varieties of social thought. And, in two new chapters, Harvey considers contemporary cartographic identities and social movements.
Harvey's insights into current social, environmental, and political trends, in combination with his historical observations, demonstrate the centrality of geography to comprehending the world as it is-and as it might be.

3 out of 5 stars A collection of essays of differing quality.......2006-10-12

"Spaces of Capital" is the title under which David Harvey has collected a series of essays or observations written by him for a variety of geographical and economical journals. The essays span the whole period of Harvey's working life, and therefore trace the development of his view and thoughts closely. This is interesting at a sort of 'meta' level, but it has the downside that the first half of the book is still very much in the orthodox geographical mold and mostly quite vague and noncommittal. Although already in the first essays he proposes a more critical geographical science, and lashes out at the McCarthyism in the field, they still lack the coherent framework that the Marxist point of view would later give to his insights.

Of most interest, for this reason, are the last three or four essays in the book. These are in fact very good and worthwhile, dealing with his theory of rent, the theory of uneven geographical development, and the way capitalist accumulation affects and is affected by geographical structures, mostly in the form of immobile fixed capital. The essay called "The Spatial Fix" is more historical, and goes into the role of space and geography in the works of Marx, Von Thünen and Hegel; this is probably the most interesting part of the book for philosophers and historians.

If you're interested in the later Harvey's insights into Marxist political economy and geographical differences, I would recommend buying "Limits to Capital" instead. This book is mostly of use as an addition to an already well-stocked 'critical theory' shelf, for the specialist. Inhabitants of Baltimore, MD, might also want to buy this for the quite extensive study on the political economy of the city that is included in this book.

It is unfortunate the turn that the field of Geography has made into the Marxist realm. While the academic side of geography takes comfort in the "feel good" ideas of this approach, it serves no purpose in advancing relevant work.

Do your self a favor - skip this book and go buy an old copy (prior to 1970) of almost any geography text. You will be much better served.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant revitalization of Geography.......2002-08-29

The influence of David Harvey on the academic discipline of geography cannot be overstated. With incredibly perseverance, Harvey called for greater ethical commitment right from the 1970s which saw the beginning of his career. This book charts the course of his views as they change from then till now. Before I tell you what the book is about, let me say a few words about the style: Harvey writes in incredibly moving and deceptively simple prose (though his ideas are as complicated as any of the Continental thinkers who dominate elite theory today). In a community of theorists who rival each other in being prolix and obscure, this is truly refreshing.

The first part of the book contains several essays, written between 1974 and 2000, all exploring two key themes:1) the discipline of geography and its relevance to today and 2) the nexus between certain forms of geographical knowledge and political power. Some essays are absolute gems. Specially noteworthy are the last two: City and Social Justice, and Cartographic Identities. In the first, Harvey theorizes the possibility of radical urban grassroots movements and the conditions for their 'success' (a bit problematic it must be admitted with its urbanist telos, specially for someone from the economic South like me) and in the second, he envisions a program for a synthetic study of (mostly mutually noncompatible) geographical knowledges constitued at different institutional sites (academic, the State apparatus, transnational orgs like IMF etc, multinational corporations, military, popular knowledge etc etc) as a task for geographers of the near future.

The second set of essays try with great skill (though it must be admitted that to someone not overly familiar with the historical-materialist tradition, they are hard to get through) to insert the thematics of space (especially important when one considers the growing unequality of development in today's world and the international (gendered) division of labor)in a historical-materialist tradition with the project of founding a historico-geographical materialist tradition.

In any case, WHATEVER your background read this book. You may not agree with everything but it will trulymake you question a lot of your received notions.

Book Description

Macro Trading and Investment Strategies is the first thorough examination of one of the most proficient and enigmatic trading strategies in use today - global macro. More importantly, it introduces an innovative strategy to this popular hedge fund investment style - global macroeconomic arbitrage.

In Macro Trading and Investment Strategies, Dr. Burstein presents, with examples, the framework for traditional global macro strategies, then shows how to use macroeconomic mispricings in global financial markets to design innovative global macroeconomic arbitrage strategies for trading and investing. Packed with revealing trading case studies, examples, explanations, and definitions, this comprehensive work covers:
* Global directional macro, long/short macro, and macroeconomic arbitrage trading and investment strategies
* Causes of macroeconomic mispricings in markets; tackling secondary macroeconomic variables in trades
* The importance of technical timing in macro arbitrage
* Volatility of macro arbitrage strategies versus volatility of relative-value strategies
* Mispricing opportunities due to the effect of the Asian crisis on global markets
* Macro arbitrage of the EMU convergence mispricing in equity markets
* Mispricings of retail sales, GDP, industrial production, interest rates, and exchange rates in stock markets

In-depth and timely, Macro Trading and Investment Strategies covers an area of intense interest to today's trading and investment community and shows new opportunities. It is invaluable reading for those seeking new ways to tackle today's volatile global markets.

1 out of 5 stars Not really that good..............2006-05-27

When I first saw this book and ordered it i was very excited to learn more about the intricies of macro trading. After reading about 1/2 of the book I could tell I just wasted $40. I found that the authors comparison of two different variables on 1 graph with 2 Y axis was statistically wrong. You cannot compare two different variables on absolute movement at all, espically when you are using two different scales on the same graph. Using this method of comparison sun-spots and the S&P500 have correlated. The correct way to do this is by comparing percentage movement of the two different variables. By doing this with my previos example there is no real correlation, jsut as one would think. I would assume that the same would occur for 1/2 of this books graphs.

All in all, buy, Market-Neutral Investing : Long/Short Hedge Fund Strategies by Joseph G. Nicholas, You'll apperciate it alot more and it isn't flawed like the book on this page!

1 out of 5 stars Not advanced - not simple.......2004-04-12

I cannot be overly critical of this book merely due to my own preconceived notions of what it might be. I was expecting some sort of more hands-on version of Soros' "Alchemy". What I got was nothing of the kind. The trade examples are very simplistic and the book poorly constructed, laid out, and written. The entire work could be 2-3 chapters in normal prose and outline. The strategies discussed were somewhat advanced strategies that were described in an extremely simplistic manner. Somewhat akin to Sesame Street giving instructions on how to manage an options book. I was sorely disappointed as I know the author is capable of delivering a much more intriguing work.

2 out of 5 stars Titles might be misleading by Tevfik Aksoy.......2000-02-14

The book is based on ex post iteration of events and investment strategies, which lacks the necessary foundation of macroeconomic introduction. It requires extensive knowledge of macroeconomics and finance in order to grasp (or digest) what the ideas behind strategies are. Clearly not for a beginner but I would not recommend it for an experienced fund manager at all. I found most of the examples and strategies highly simple.

5 out of 5 stars Ready for a peek at the big time?.......1999-08-13

Feeling brave? If you are, crack Burstein's book and have a look at how some serious big-time money works. Of course, by defintion this is not the majority of market participants so this is not a "popular" read.

But scientific truth, like a successful P&L statement, is not democratic. Either it makes money or it does not. And if does, you can bet that a few will get it right but most won't.

As an arbitrageur, Burstien's book is an excellent unfair advantage to those who are able to heed its message.

At the invitation of President Roosevelt, Rosenstock-Huessy undertook to reform the Civilian Conservation Corps by turning it into a universal service, open to young persons from all walks of life. That story is told in Camp William James. From the preface by the American historian Page Smith, who was a member of that original camp: "Today when the Congress of the United States considers proposals to reestablish, along new lines, a corps of young people volunteering for national environmental service, it is instructive to note that many of the issues as to the proper role, recruitment, and organization of an 'ecology army' were first confronted and debated by the founders of Camp William James." Rosenstock-Huessy wrote in 1945: "Our peacemakers and planners must be supported by camps all over the globe, where youth, recruited from every town and village all over the globe, serves. This service must implement the global organization as the young must experience what the old are planning before the old can have any authority."

From the supplier: Caterpillars can be a useful tool in teaching children about the human life cycle and the changes it brings to their lives. A comparison of the life cycles of butterflies and humans can effectively teach such skills as observing, predicting, measuring, communicating, comparing and contrasting. It can also be used to add such new words as caterpillar, chrysalis, larva, pupa and metamorphosis to their vocabulary. Activities associated with watching caterpillars grow can also be designed.

                                  Book Description

Volume 2 of Bold Ventures provides detailed insights about five notable U.S. innovations in science education. The first study examines California's ground-breaking curriculum framework, progressive statewide assessments and, particularly, opportunities for professional development of teachers. The second case looks at project 2061's seminal publications and, especially, the processes used to develop them. Studies of Kids Network and Voyage of the Mimi illuminate what these innovations look like in elementary and middle school classrooms and discuss key adoption and implementation issues. A study of Chemistry in the Community particularly emphasises instructive dimensions of its development and the intended and unintended ways this course is being used in high school curricula. These cases, along with the Volume 3 studies of three mathematics innovations, comprise the United States participation in the largest cross-national case study project ever undertaken. Volume 1 reveals patterns among all eight innovations.

                                    Book Description

This book draws together three areas of work on plasma technologies: advanced efforts based on wave generated, high frequency plasmas, plasma assisted ion implantation, and electron beam generated plasma. It encompasses all the links in the progress from fundamentals to applications: the description and modelling of different plasma sources to technological use; from general diagnostics to methods related to technological control and operation of plasma reactors. The book lays a foundation for the application of sources in industry (in high-tech electronics, microelectronics, IC fabrication, plasma chemistry, lighting, new materials, optics, the biomedical industry, aerospace, etc.), and in astrophysics, atomic physics, laser physics, accelerator physics and microwave devices.

Mr. Apology and Other Essays is a miscellany of misfits, cranks, daredevils, nuts, eccentrics, and lone wolves. From a piece on a Romanian cab driver who intends to cross the Bering Strait in his taxi to a celebration of two renowned hockey fighters, from Ry Cooder's collaboration with Cuban musicians in 1996 (which resulted in the celebrated Buena Vista Social Club) to a behind-the-scenes look at a Rolling Stones dinner party in 1983, Wilkinson brings to these pieces an intelligence and compassion that taps our deepest sense of humanity. The breadth of these essays is rare; with the same sensitivity and insight, Wilkinson explores Paul Simon's writer's block as well as the puzzling epidemic of blindness that afflicted 150 Cambodian women, refugees from the Khmer Rouge. In the title piece, Wilkinson describes the experience of a New York City artist who invites people to call and leave an apology -- any kind of apology, for anything -- on his answering machine. When one caller seems to divulge a deadly secret, the line becomes a complicated vehicle for both confession and delusion. Alec Wilkinson's place in American writing, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, is among "the first rank of literary journalists . . . One is reminded of Naipaul, Mailer, and Agee." Entertaining, revelatory, and exemplary in their craftsmanship, these are essays to ponder, to learn from, to be appalled and inspired by. Mr. Apology displays the art of the essay at its finest.

5 out of 5 stars Elegant and Intelligent Writing.......2007-09-12

Alec Wilkinson's MR. APOLOGY is a collection of essays covering a wide variety of subjects and, while I believe that anyone who picks up this book will find at least some stories of interest, I found nearly all of them fascinating. The reason for this, besides the obvious - that Wilkinson chooses interesting subjects - is that he is an outstanding writer. He writes reportorially, with a non-judgemental and elegant grace.

The book is divided into three sections. The first consists of stories about, among others, interesting creative people (Paul Simon, Bob Weir), athletes (hockey enforcers Tony Twist and Joe Kocur), and people with unusual occupations (funny car driver Joe Force). There is a terrific story about Larry King which has nothing to do with his TV career, but deals humorously with his life as a child and a teenager. Many writers would play some of these stories for laughs, poking fun at or distancing themselves from at least some of the subjects of these stories (for example a cab driver in New York whose goal is to drive his cab to the Arctic Ocean). Wilkinson does not do this and treats all of his subjects with respect and dignity.

The second and third sections deal with weightier matters. To mention a few there is an essay about instances of non-organic blindness in Cambodian women who witnessed and lived through brutal torture during a war. I found this section difficult to read because of the inhuman (or, actually, tragically human) mistreatment of captive Cambodians, but not because of Wilkinson's writing which was the only reason I was able to finish the piece.

There is an amazing piece which resulted from the author's many hours of interviews with convicted serial murderer John Wayne Gacy. I cannot imagine reading a better interview with this kind of subject, although I would also recommend Robert Mladinich's masterful FROM THE MOUTH OF THE MONSTER about another serial killer, Joel Rifkin. Given the sheer savage soullessness of Gacy's crimes, Wilkinson's writing is understated and is not at all sensational. I'd like to mention a couple of his many comments about Gacy I found interesting. At one point he likens Gacy, who would clearly be an unappealing person had he not committed any crimes, to a person in a bar with whom you have begun a conversation and cannot subsequently get rid of. And later he writes that Gacy "lives with the knowledge of having done something horrible by refusing to live with it. He is like someone who inhabits a parallel world..." This is an incisive description, and, parenthetically, seems a stunningly apt description of President George W. Bush's relationship with his Iraq war. But I guess that's another conversation.

I have saved for last Wilkinson's achingly touching essay about the birth of his son, and his wife's and his gradual realization by the time he is pre-schooler that he is socially awkward and probably has Asperger's Syndrome. Wilkinson's love for the child and his fear of what he will encounter in the world are heartbreaking. The next essay is a companion piece about a friend's grown son who has Asperger's. Both of these essays, while emotionally intense, are dignified and Wilkinson never lapses into melodrama or self-pity.

Alec Wilkinson writes intelligent prose for intelligent readers. I'd give
MR. APOLOGY 100 stars if I could.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A Potpourri of Well-Crafted Essays........2005-01-28

Alec Wilkinson brings a stimulating read with "Mr. Apology and other essays;" most of the essays were previously published in "The New Yorker." The first part hosts a cast of eccentric characters that easily compete with Kramer's adventures on the TV show "Seinfeld." Wilkinson is able to delve into the core of an individual within the space of twenty pages or less. In "Elmore's Legs" we meet Gregg Sutter, the legman for crime-writer Elmore Leonard - the person who does Leonard's research. Wilkinson also explores what makes hockey goalie Mike Richter, drag-strip champion racer John Force and others tick.

In the second part the laughs taper off as a tone of seriousness envelops his reflections about his son who has many of the characteristics of Asperger's syndrome. "The world with its lights and intensities bears down on them with terrific force." He also warmly remembers his mentor, William Maxwell, an editor at "The New Yorker." Although the subjects are obviously close to his heart, he does not stray into sentimentality and is objective so much so that it seems like he is interviewing himself.

Within the third part Wilkinson examines the rule of the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot as seen by two Cambodian women who are now mysteriously blind like numerous others from that tribulation period. The author effectively translates the daily horror and puts the reader in the women's vantage point. The text is difficult at certain moments to digest. But his essay on John Wayne Gacy, convicted of killing thirty-three boys, the most in America, is ultra creepy; some of these passages you might want to skip entirely. However, even if you have a weak stomach, the rest of the essays should be considered compulsory reading due to the author's ability to articulate clearly each person's reason for being.

4 out of 5 stars an eclectic collection.......2003-11-08

I picked up this book after enjoying some of Wilkinson's numerous "New Yorker" pieces. This collection is truly eclectic, covering subjects/people as diverse as Asperger's Syndrome, John Wayne Gacey, the Rolling Stones, an NHL goalie and survivors of Cambodia's Khmer Rouge regime. It was a bit difficult to get a concrete sense of Wilkinson's voice, but his breadth of coverage and respect for his topics/themes definitely showed in the essays. I especially liked how elegantly he managed to describe his feelings toward these topics. Worth reading.
