    Book Description

Amid mounting concern over the loss of jobs to low-wage economies, one fact is clear: America's prosperity hinges on the ability of its businesses to continually introduce new products and services. But what makes for a creative economy? How can the remarkable surge of innovation that fueled the boom of the 1990s be sustained?

For an answer, Richard K. Lester and Michael J. Piore examine innovation strategies in some of the economy's most dynamic sectors. Through eye-opening case studies of new product development in fields such as cell phones, medical devices, and blue jeans, two fundamental processes emerge.

One of these processes, analysis--rational problem solving--dominates management and engineering practice. The other, interpretation, is not widely understood, or even recognized--although, as the authors make clear, it is absolutely crucial to innovation. Unlike problem solving, interpretation embraces and exploits ambiguity, the wellspring of creativity in the economy. By emphasizing interpretation, and showing how these two radically different processes can be combined, Lester and Piore's book gives managers and designers the concepts and tools to keep new products flowing.

But the authors also offer an unsettling critique of national policy. By ignoring the role of interpretation, economic policymakers are drawing the wrong lessons from the 1990s boom. The current emphasis on expanding the reach of market competition will help the analytical processes needed to implement innovation. But if unchecked it risks choking off the economy's vital interpretive spaces. Unless a more balanced policy approach is adopted, warn Lester and Piore, America's capacity to innovate--its greatest economic asset--will erode.

4 out of 5 stars More Interpretation, Less Problem Solving Helps Innovation.......2005-10-13

I work in a business that struggles to be innovative. There's many very smart people who are superb problem solvers. This book explains why a problem solving mindset may actually interfere with listening to customers and stimulating new ideas.

By thinking "who else should I invite into this conversation who might have another perspective," and "how can I get these people together and stimulate a deep conversation," I've begun to see another way to work with my colleagues that may help our organization push the envelope more. The authors offered very specific examples of these kinds of interpretative conversations.

This book has good case studies about garment industry, cell phone industry and biotech. Their economic argument pushing for more public spaces where interpretative conversations can occur was of less interest and I thought weaker than their company examples.

        Book Description

This is a substantially expanded edition of the author's seminal work "The Authoritative and Authoritarian in Islamic Discourses: A Contemporary Case Study". Beginning with the case study of a Muslim basketball player who refused to stand up while the American national anthem was playing, the author documents the disintegration of the Islamic juristic tradition, and the prevalence of authoritarianism in contemporary Muslim discourses. The author analyzes the rise of what he describes as puritan and despotic trends in modern Islam, and asserts that such trends nullify the richness and diversity of the Islamic tradition. By declaring themselves the true soldiers of God and the defenders of religion, Muslim puritan movements are able to degrade women, eradicate critical thinking, and empty Islam of its moral content. In effect, the author argues, the self-declared protectors of Islam become its despots and oppressors who suppress the dynamism and vigor of the Islamic message. Anchoring himself in the rich Islamic jurisprudential tradition, the author argues for upholding the authoritativeness of the religious text without succumbing to authoritarian methodologies of interpretation. Ultimately, the author asserts that in order to respect the integrity of the Divine laws it is necessary to adopt rigorous analytical methodologies of interpretation, and to re-investigate the place of morality in modern Islam.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Scholar!.......2006-02-28

Dr. Abou El Fadl's books are all great. This one is a bit like " The Great Theft". He talks about moderate Islam as being true Islam, and takes on the extremists with much knowledge. Alhamdulillah!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Alhamdulillah! Every thinking Muslim must read this!.......2005-02-06

Dr. Khaled Abu El Fadl is brilliant, Mashallah. I read everything of his that I can get my hands on. He possesses an amazing clarity of thought and the ability to explain his ideas to readers in a straight forward and logical way. He supports his arguments with conscise explanations, and gives copious citations and footnotes which show that he really knows where he is coming from and what he is talking about.
"And God Knows the Soldiers" is a much needed look at how the modern puritanical movement in Islam (Wahhabism and it's offshoots)has usurped authority and has blatantly ignored much of the rich discourse from the history of Islamic thought, especially in terms of jurisprudence. Dr. Abu El Fadl intelligently and respectfully attacks the methods used by the contemporary self-appointed authorities, and shows how they are used deviously to homogenize Islam and Muslims, mostly to the detriment of women, but also at the expense of basic moral values.
After reading Dr. Abu El Fadl's works, especially this one, I feel that I have a revived love for the Islamic tradition and a deeper understanding of the message of the Quran and of the actions and behavior of our Beloved Prophet (saw).
If you care about the state of Islam and Muslims in the world today, you must read this book.

        5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2003-07-16

A brilliant analysis of contemporary muslim discourses on islamic law and morality.

            Book Description

Why do people age differently? Research in the field of gerontology has indicated that there are large individual differences in personality, cognitive functioning, physical health, and psychological well-being, as well as in the quality of life in the later years. It is this variability and the reasons why people age differently that this book explores. Thoughtfully written, Aging presents an overview of what is known about genetic and environmental influences on aging. Beginning with an overview of family, adoption, and twin designs, author Cindy S. Bergeman examines such topics as the research in the area of longevity and health, cognitive functioning, personality, and psychopathology; and social support, life events, and measures of the family environment. The book concludes with a summary of the field of gerontological behavioral genetics. This book will stimulate discussion and future work about the origins of individual differences in later life and will be invaluable to professionals and practitioners in the fields of developmental psychology, psychology, aging, family studies, and nursing.

              Book Description

This is the third volume in the series on the chemistry and physical properties of milk constituents. Volumes 1 and 2 dealt with the commercially important constituents proteins and lipids, respectively. Although the constituents dealt with in this volume are of less commercial importance, they are, nevertheless, of major significance in the chemical, physical, technological, nutritional and physiological properties of milk and milk products. Advanced Dairy Chemistry Volume 3 is the most comprehensive book available on the subject. The constituents of milk dealt with in this volume are lactose, water, milk salts and vitamins. The chemical and enzymatic modification of lactose and the physico-chemical properties of milk are also discussed. This book is a second edition of the very successful third volume in the series Developments in Dairy Chemistry. Professor Fox, a world authority in this field, has pulled together an impressive international list of contributors, providing a title that will be great use to personnel working within the dairy industry and those in academics and research.

              Book Description

The 1952 Nobel physics laureate Felix Bloch (1905-83) was one of the titans of twentieth-century physics. He laid the fundamentals for the theory of solids and has been called the "father of solid-state physics." His numerous, valuable contributions include the theory of magnetism, measurement of the magnetic moment of the neutron, nuclear magnetic resonance, and the infrared problem in quantum electrodynamics.

Statistical mechanics is a crucial subject which explores the understanding of the physical behaviour of many-body systems that create the world around us. Bloch's first-year graduate course at Stanford University was the highlight for several generations of students. Upon his retirement, he worked on a book based on the course. Unfortunately, at the time of his death, the writing was incomplete.

This book has been prepared by Professor John Dirk Walecka from Bloch's unfinished masterpiece. It also includes three sets of Bloch's handwritten lecture notes (dating from 1949, 1969 and 1976), and details of lecture notes taken in 1976 by Brian Serot, who gave an invaluable opinion of the course from a student's perspective. All of Bloch's problem sets, some dating back to 1933, have been included.

The book is accessible to anyone in the physical sciences at the advanced undergraduate level or the first-year graduate level.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars beautifully presented self-contained treatment.......2001-12-01

This is perhaps my favorite book on statistical mechanics. Bloch's exposition is self-contained, starting from fundamental concepts. The emphasis is on concepts. The presentation is concise and elegant, relying on mathematics rather than words to present the theory. Highly recommended to advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students.

4 out of 5 stars La melancolía de las maldiciones.......2001-04-11

                5 out of 5 stars de pecados y culpas.......2000-06-10

                  3 out of 5 stars Honesty.......2000-03-09

This book is all summed up into honesty. In the book it states "Be true! Be true! Be true! Show freely to the world, it not your worst, yet some trait whereby the worst may be inferred!" In the book it shows how much better you can feel if you are just honest. Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale had committed such a sin and hadn't told anyone but when he did that day on the scaffold he fealt so much relief. Imagine seven years holding in your darkest sin, your biggest secret. It said that he had "a flush of triamph in his face, as one who, in the crisis of acutest pain, had won a victory." In some ways I would say that I liked this book but in others I do not like it at all. The reasons that I do not like this book is because when Nathaniel Hawthorne goes into great detail about some things I get distracted and I start thinking about something else. (Maybe that is just me and not the book) In the beginning of the book I just could not get into it. Maybe it was the big words or something but... The beggining I felt was very boring because it was not into the actual main part of the book. I found that I couldn't really stay focused on the book. The reason that I liked the book was because I could relate to a time when I had done something wrong and felt so terrible that I was almost to the point of throwing up and when I told someone I felt so much better. It took so much pressure off of my shoulders. The book was a pretty decent book but to really fully understand it I would read it atleast twice.
