Don't Sell Us Short!.......2003-03-31
Relevant personal experiences of the author and other workers with Chronic Illnesses (CIs), such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, chronic back conditions, asthma, and immunosuppressant illnesses, are included throughout the book. "I'd Rather Be Working" also provides timely information and guidance to supervisory personnel and co-workers about some poorly understood chronic conditions and the challenges they present and how CIs cope with them on a daily basis or during flare-ups.
Chapter Nine, 'Finding That Job,' offers recommendations for both job-seeker and staff for gaining greater understanding of the attitudinal and physical barriers that may exist in the workplace. Many practical suggestions are provided for prospective workers with CIs that will assist them in presenting accurate portrayals of their capabilities and limitations to interviewers.
Advice for discussing necessary accommodations and assistive devices is also provided. Interwoven with this advice to workers, Ms. Backstrom offers real-life examples of how accommodations in keeping with the Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA)can be made without undue cost or disruption in the workplace. Blatant or veiled discrimination against workers with CIs and other disabilities, unfortunately, can also be a problem. The material cited in "I'd Rather Be Working" is a gold mine for staff development in this area.
CIs with mental impairments or illnesses are often the target of rampant stigmatization in the workplace. Some developmental disabilities limit certain aspects of cognition, but not the ability or willingness to perform skill-appropriate tasks with competence and pride. Individuals diagnosed with mental illnesses, such as major depression, bipolar disorder, panic/anxiety disorders, and personality disorders, have also been shunned because of others' fears and overgeneralizations.
Even CIs with so-called "invisible symptoms" may react with anxiety, fatigue or flare-ups if they become a target of co-workers' antipathy. Despite adequate accommodations and medical management, rumors and charges of malingering and 'favoritism' in the form of specialized equipment or rest breaks may undermine the employability of eager and well-qualified workers.
"I'd Rather Be Working" includes numerous sidebars, self-assessment tools, statistics and other resources. The book provides an abundance of references from the private sector as well as from government agencies.
Overall, the book is an excellent source for finding and keeping a job as well as for creating a work environment that is CI-friendly. In these days of downsizing and economic fluctuation, I would recommend this book not only to prospective workers with CIs, but also to personnel staff members and to the universe of employees who share the designation, CJSA, that is, Chronic Job Security Anxiety!
I'd Rather Be Working.......2003-03-16
Ms. Backstrom takes you through the process of discovering marketable skills, dealing with government agencies, prejudice in the workplace, and laws governing employees with disabilities. If you are suffering from unfair treatment in the workplace, or find yourself unable to continue at your present job and need to discover new options, this is a book you won't want to miss. The book is loaded with resources, from education to job-training to self-tests to jump start the process of returning to work--for yourself or for someone else.
As a sufferer of chronic pain, I found the book to be a great resource as well as a source of encouragement and hope.
Go For It!.......2003-03-03
I particularly like the step-by-step approach, the websites given for research, and the possible outside help listed, should a person stumble. Most of all, I like Backstrom's encouragement, and the fact she does know what she's talking about--she's been there, done that.
I'd Rather Be Working offers hope to the chronically ill........2003-02-24
For those people capable of working despite chronic illness, Backstrom offers an abundance of practical hands-on solutions to finding employment that is both manageable and rewarding. Most people want to work. Chronic illness should not be a barrier to leading a productive life. Backstrom has written a book that offers realistic solutions to problems that people with chronic illness face in addition to listing government resources and current laws regarding people with disabilities.
Backstrom personalizes chronic illness by telling her story as well as the stories of others in similar circumstances. As a person with a chronic illness who is working, I applaud Backstrom for the remarkable job she has done in bringing this important resource to a population that might otherwise be living in despair of ever leading a useful life. I highly recommend this book.
Wouldn't we all rather be working? A great resource!.......2003-02-17
It is so easy to give up when you're diagnosed with a chronic illness. Ask me. I know from experience. When we are not working we often lose self confidence, money, benefits and companionship. Honestly, I'm sure the majority of us would rather be working. Right? I can't think that any of us who would rather not have money for food, housing, insurance and possibly even extras.
Not everyone with a chronic illness can work but if you can, Miss Backstrom will get you thinking by offering thought provoking questions on what your physical, mental, and emotional limitations are, show you where to look, what the laws are, and remind you that you aren't alone.
There are several helpful resources. If one doesn't have the help you're looking for, keep going through the list. There seems to be something for everybody here.
Most of all, this book offers hope and guidance to get you back to work so you will again feel like a productive member of society.
Gayle Backstrom is an author who's "Been there. Done that." She has a smooth flowing conversational style that makes you feel like she's in the room with you.
I highly recommend this book.

"The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers." --Henry IV, Part IOr, suggests Paul F. Campos, at the very least, let's put them out of their misery. In Jurismania, Campos does his best to demonstrate that the behavior of the legal mind, with its insistence on the "rule of law," is a "culturally sanctioned form of obsessive-compulsive behavior." In his more charitable moments, he is willing to concede that it may be suffering not from delusion, but from religious fervor. About the nicest thing he has to say about the American legal system is that it is a tremendous waste of financial resources.
The problem, as Campos sees it, is an irrational belief in the power of rationality to solve all our problems, which leads to the elevation of "social coordination and dispute processing," which is what Campos identifies as the purpose of "law," to sacrosanct procedures that are inadequate to the tasks they are being asked to perform. Nor is this state of mind limited to lawyers and legal academics; consider, suggests Campos, that many voters believe in the balanced budget amendment, "which boils down to the belief that the best way to ensure legislators pass legislation that balances the federal budget is to pass legislation requiring legislators to pass legislation that balances the federal budget." There are some situations, the author argues, for which "more law" is not the answer. Readers may find Campos's style--which references Nietzschean ethics, college football, materialist rationalism, and Ann Landers as part of the same overall argument--off-putting, but Jurismania is like a voice crying in the wilderness, describing a crisis our increasingly litigious society continues to ignore at its peril.
Book Description
In Jurismania, Paul Campos asserts that our legal system is beginning to exhibit symptoms of serious mental illness. Trials and appeals that stretch out for years and cost millions, 100 page appellate court opinions, 1,000 page statutes before which even lawyers tremble with fear, and a public that grows more litigious every day all testify to a judicial overkill that borders on obsessive-compulsive disorder. Campos locates the source of such madness, paradoxically, in our worship of reason and the resulting belief that all problems are amenable to legal solutions. In insightful discussions of a wide range of cases, from NCAA regulations of student-athletes to the Simpson trial, from our most intractable social disputes over abortion and physician-assisted suicide to the war on drugs and the increasingly fastidious attempts to regulate behavior in public spaces, Campos shows that the mania for more law exacerbates the very problems it seeks to remedy. In his final chapter, the author calls instead for a humbling recognition of the limits of reason and a much more modest role for our legal system. Clearly written and laced with a delicious wit, Jurismania gives us a CAT-scan of the American legal mind at work. It reveals not only that the patient is even worse off than we imagined, but also clarifies the many reasons why.Customer Reviews:

Book Description
In order to equip hopeful graduate students with the knowledge necessary to pass the qualifying examination, the authors have assembled and solved standard and original problems from major American universities – Boston University, University of Chicago, University of Colorado at Boulder, Columbia, University of Maryland, University of Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan Tech, MIT, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Stony Brook, University of Wisconsin at Madison – and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. A wide range of material is covered and comparisons are made between similar problems of different schools to provide the student with enough information to feel comfortable and confident at the exam. Guide to Physics Problems is published in two volumes: this book, Part 1, covers Mechanics, Relativity and Electrodynamics; Part 2 covers Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics.
Praise for A Guide to Physics Problems: Part 1: Mechanics, Relativity, and Electrodynamics:
"Sidney Cahn and Boris Nadgorny have energetically collected and presented solutions to about 140 problems from the exams at many universities in the United States and one university in Russia, the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. Some of the problems are quite easy, others are quite tough; some are routine, others ingenious." (From the Foreword by C. N. Yang, Nobelist in Physics, 1957)
"Generations of graduate students will be grateful for its existence as they prepare for this major hurdle in their careers." (R. Shankar, Yale University)
"The publication of the volume should be of great help to future candidates who must pass this type of exam." (J. Robert Schrieffer, Nobelist in Physics, 1972)
"I was positively impressed … The book will be useful to students who are studying for their examinations and to faculty who are searching for appropriate problems." (M. L. Cohen, University of California at Berkeley)
"If a student understands how to solve these problems, they have gone a long way toward mastering the subject matter." (Martin Olsson, University of Wisconsin at Madison)
"This book will become a necessary study guide for graduate students while they prepare for their Ph.D. examination. It will become equally useful for the faculty who write the questions." (G. D. Mahan, University of Tennessee at Knoxville)
