Sometimes you can judge a book by its cover, as in the case of Gayle Backstrom's recent release, "I'd Rather Be Working: A Step-by-Step Guide to Financial Self-Support for People With Chronic Illness." The clever cover graphics set the tone for this compact but enormously instructive manual. Aimed primarily at the audience of current or prospective workers who have chronic disabilities, this book encourages readers to keep a personal notebook with job-related information that will enhance and sustain their employability.

Relevant personal experiences of the author and other workers with Chronic Illnesses (CIs), such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, arthritis, chronic back conditions, asthma, and immunosuppressant illnesses, are included throughout the book. "I'd Rather Be Working" also provides timely information and guidance to supervisory personnel and co-workers about some poorly understood chronic conditions and the challenges they present and how CIs cope with them on a daily basis or during flare-ups.

Chapter Nine, 'Finding That Job,' offers recommendations for both job-seeker and staff for gaining greater understanding of the attitudinal and physical barriers that may exist in the workplace. Many practical suggestions are provided for prospective workers with CIs that will assist them in presenting accurate portrayals of their capabilities and limitations to interviewers.

Advice for discussing necessary accommodations and assistive devices is also provided. Interwoven with this advice to workers, Ms. Backstrom offers real-life examples of how accommodations in keeping with the Americans with Disabilities Act(ADA)can be made without undue cost or disruption in the workplace. Blatant or veiled discrimination against workers with CIs and other disabilities, unfortunately, can also be a problem. The material cited in "I'd Rather Be Working" is a gold mine for staff development in this area.

CIs with mental impairments or illnesses are often the target of rampant stigmatization in the workplace. Some developmental disabilities limit certain aspects of cognition, but not the ability or willingness to perform skill-appropriate tasks with competence and pride. Individuals diagnosed with mental illnesses, such as major depression, bipolar disorder, panic/anxiety disorders, and personality disorders, have also been shunned because of others' fears and overgeneralizations.

Even CIs with so-called "invisible symptoms" may react with anxiety, fatigue or flare-ups if they become a target of co-workers' antipathy. Despite adequate accommodations and medical management, rumors and charges of malingering and 'favoritism' in the form of specialized equipment or rest breaks may undermine the employability of eager and well-qualified workers.

"I'd Rather Be Working" includes numerous sidebars, self-assessment tools, statistics and other resources. The book provides an abundance of references from the private sector as well as from government agencies.

Overall, the book is an excellent source for finding and keeping a job as well as for creating a work environment that is CI-friendly. In these days of downsizing and economic fluctuation, I would recommend this book not only to prospective workers with CIs, but also to personnel staff members and to the universe of employees who share the designation, CJSA, that is, Chronic Job Security Anxiety!

      4 out of 5 stars I'd Rather Be Working.......2003-03-16

Ms. Backstrom herself suffers from fibromyalgia, so she understands the trials and struggles of living and trying to work with chronic pain. This book is full of advice, exercises, and practical knowledge to help those with disabilities find work they can do and the help that's available. With testimonials by others who've found a way to deal with their pain and still work, I'D RATHER BE WORKING is a must have for those who need to support themselves while dealing with illness or pain.

Ms. Backstrom takes you through the process of discovering marketable skills, dealing with government agencies, prejudice in the workplace, and laws governing employees with disabilities. If you are suffering from unfair treatment in the workplace, or find yourself unable to continue at your present job and need to discover new options, this is a book you won't want to miss. The book is loaded with resources, from education to job-training to self-tests to jump start the process of returning to work--for yourself or for someone else.

As a sufferer of chronic pain, I found the book to be a great resource as well as a source of encouragement and hope.

5 out of 5 stars Go For It!.......2003-03-03

This book is encouraging but at the same time realistic. The world is tough, the job market difficult, but with proper thought and a logical approach, a disabled person can find work. Maybe not exactly the dream job or what one prefers -- but employment -- something that boosts the ego and says,
      "Hey, I'm worthwhile and producing."

I particularly like the step-by-step approach, the websites given for research, and the possible outside help listed, should a person stumble. Most of all, I like Backstrom's encouragement, and the fact she does know what she's talking about--she's been there, done that.

5 out of 5 stars I'd Rather Be Working offers hope to the chronically ill........2003-02-24

Gayle Backstom's straight-talking, no-nonsense approach offers guidance and encouragement to people with chronic illness who want to return to or continue to work. Many people with chronic illness are not aware of the many resources available or that they can take the initiative to better their lives. When a person is dealing with chronic illness self-esteem plummets and it's easy to feel helpless and unemployable. Backstrom's book is a wealth of positive information and common sense tactics for assessing both the abilities and needs of people with chronic illness.

For those people capable of working despite chronic illness, Backstrom offers an abundance of practical hands-on solutions to finding employment that is both manageable and rewarding. Most people want to work. Chronic illness should not be a barrier to leading a productive life. Backstrom has written a book that offers realistic solutions to problems that people with chronic illness face in addition to listing government resources and current laws regarding people with disabilities.

Backstrom personalizes chronic illness by telling her story as well as the stories of others in similar circumstances. As a person with a chronic illness who is working, I applaud Backstrom for the remarkable job she has done in bringing this important resource to a population that might otherwise be living in despair of ever leading a useful life. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Wouldn't we all rather be working? A great resource!.......2003-02-17

Here is the resource you need to help you rebuild your self confidence and your life. Read this book first if you're chronically ill and trying to keep your job, looking to go back to work or if you need to change jobs to accommodate your illness.

It is so easy to give up when you're diagnosed with a chronic illness. Ask me. I know from experience. When we are not working we often lose self confidence, money, benefits and companionship. Honestly, I'm sure the majority of us would rather be working. Right? I can't think that any of us who would rather not have money for food, housing, insurance and possibly even extras.

Not everyone with a chronic illness can work but if you can, Miss Backstrom will get you thinking by offering thought provoking questions on what your physical, mental, and emotional limitations are, show you where to look, what the laws are, and remind you that you aren't alone.

There are several helpful resources. If one doesn't have the help you're looking for, keep going through the list. There seems to be something for everybody here.

Most of all, this book offers hope and guidance to get you back to work so you will again feel like a productive member of society.

Gayle Backstrom is an author who's "Been there. Done that." She has a smooth flowing conversational style that makes you feel like she's in the room with you.

      I highly recommend this book.

"The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers." --Henry IV, Part I

Or, suggests Paul F. Campos, at the very least, let's put them out of their misery. In Jurismania, Campos does his best to demonstrate that the behavior of the legal mind, with its insistence on the "rule of law," is a "culturally sanctioned form of obsessive-compulsive behavior." In his more charitable moments, he is willing to concede that it may be suffering not from delusion, but from religious fervor. About the nicest thing he has to say about the American legal system is that it is a tremendous waste of financial resources.

The problem, as Campos sees it, is an irrational belief in the power of rationality to solve all our problems, which leads to the elevation of "social coordination and dispute processing," which is what Campos identifies as the purpose of "law," to sacrosanct procedures that are inadequate to the tasks they are being asked to perform. Nor is this state of mind limited to lawyers and legal academics; consider, suggests Campos, that many voters believe in the balanced budget amendment, "which boils down to the belief that the best way to ensure legislators pass legislation that balances the federal budget is to pass legislation requiring legislators to pass legislation that balances the federal budget." There are some situations, the author argues, for which "more law" is not the answer. Readers may find Campos's style--which references Nietzschean ethics, college football, materialist rationalism, and Ann Landers as part of the same overall argument--off-putting, but Jurismania is like a voice crying in the wilderness, describing a crisis our increasingly litigious society continues to ignore at its peril.

        Book Description

In Jurismania, Paul Campos asserts that our legal system is beginning to exhibit symptoms of serious mental illness. Trials and appeals that stretch out for years and cost millions, 100 page appellate court opinions, 1,000 page statutes before which even lawyers tremble with fear, and a public that grows more litigious every day all testify to a judicial overkill that borders on obsessive-compulsive disorder. Campos locates the source of such madness, paradoxically, in our worship of reason and the resulting belief that all problems are amenable to legal solutions. In insightful discussions of a wide range of cases, from NCAA regulations of student-athletes to the Simpson trial, from our most intractable social disputes over abortion and physician-assisted suicide to the war on drugs and the increasingly fastidious attempts to regulate behavior in public spaces, Campos shows that the mania for more law exacerbates the very problems it seeks to remedy. In his final chapter, the author calls instead for a humbling recognition of the limits of reason and a much more modest role for our legal system. Clearly written and laced with a delicious wit, Jurismania gives us a CAT-scan of the American legal mind at work. It reveals not only that the patient is even worse off than we imagined, but also clarifies the many reasons why.

3 out of 5 stars So, what are 20 lawyers at the bottom of the ocean?.......2006-06-09

JURISMANIA seemed like a congenial book for one to read after answering the above question with, "A good start."

A lawyer himself, Campos strives to insist that American law has burgeoned to the point of being ludicrous, arational and approaching irrelevance. He makes his case with such observations as:

"... the decade-long appeal, the 100-page appellate court opinion, the 200-page law review article, the 1,000 page statute, and so on. These sorts of legal artifacts are the fruit of futile, hypertrophied exercises in forms of argument that call themselves 'reason', but that in fact must conclude with the assertion of axiomatic or circular propositions. And the excessive, jurismaniacal character of such monuments to rationalist vanity can itself be understood as the product of what is in essence a kind of obsessive-compulsive reaction to the neurotic structure of American legal thought."

        And this:

"... to call something a question of constitutional law is not so much an act of formal categorization as it is a shorthand way of signaling that it involves the most intractable moral and political issues our society faces. Constitutional law is the categorical dumping ground for everything the normal political process can't digest: race and religion, sex, and death. All the things one should never bring up in polite conversation."

Probably the most useful concept I came away with was that of "equilibrium zone", i.e. that interface between two polar opposite but equally powerful moral, legal, or social forces. Because both forces must ultimately be placated, it's in this zone that promulgated laws achieve a frustrating ambiguity that renders them open to diverse interpretations and, therefore, pretty much useless.

Campos supports his case with extensive sidebars into philosophy, metaphysics, and quotes from Nietzche - all of which left me, a Life Science kind of guy, pretty much dazed. Perhaps the author was trying too hard. Indeed, my metaphysical experience is confined to considering whether the burger in front of me is real or an illusion and, if the former, whether it contains cheese or not. I suggest that law students might find JURISMANIA intellectually provocative, but I too often lost the thread and therefore must deduct points.

2 out of 5 stars Too big promise.......2005-10-06

If I had known beforehand, that Mr. Campos is an abortion-forbidder, I would not have read the book at all.
But he comes out on that topic only in the last pages.
And while small doubts on the War on Drugs are not as timid written by a law professor as would by anyone sharing experience with the "health" system, putting psychiatric diagnoses (obsessive-compulsive disorder)to anyone who desires justice but gets a verdict in (not only American) legal system, is contempt for people - I do admit to the unfulfilled desire for justice!!!
Even if each point of criticism of the American legal system is perfectly true, the reader is left with a feel that Mr. Catholic is loathing the use of reason and discourse in legislation. What else?
The legal system of the crusaders, inquisitors and witchburners?

        2 out of 5 stars Juris-ranting.......2005-05-20

On the plus side, Paul Campos will make you think about the way our legal system works. On the whole I found I disagreed with many of his conclusions.

Campos illustrates many of the American legal system's flaws. However, the biting sarcasm undermines his best points, and then there are the points that seem to get twisted up and abstracted to the point of distraction.

Case in point: He opens with a lovely breakdown of a small section of the NCAA rules. The absurdities are duly noted and a discussion of the possible motives underlying the extra language. He can't spare derision from his tone as he anaylizes the results.

Later he treats us to a very cursory treatment of the War on Drugs. I thought there would be a lot of room to apply some of the ideas he was making in this specific arena, but he limits his assessment to the political declaration of the War on Drugs. Without much specifics he waves us to a couple of past historical events, and summarizes that the politicians should have been laughed off the stage. I didn't find his statements any more convincing than the political speechmaking that launched the war...so...

His legal discussions hold up better (in my eyes) than his straight philosophy sections. I read the book without being persuaded by the core of his critique. While it caused me to think, in the end I discounted most of his arguments.

4 out of 5 stars Eloquent plea for legal modesty.......2003-12-03

This is a stimulating, well-written critique of legal compulsiveness and over-formalism. It will be welcome to
those who (like me) have been influenced at least somewhat by the Realist idea that law is about choices and not about mechanically following rules as though sets of rules were wholly autonomous or self- executing. Although the book does tend to get a bit flighty to the end in its exposition of the author's broader philosophic themes, in the main it's a sensible explanation of why we're always going to disagree about the law and a reasoned plea for recognizing society's "ethical pluralism" (though I think he goes a bit far on the theme as applied to slavery debates in the 19th Century). Well written and stimulating.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've ever read9.......2001-11-16

Anyone interested in an insightful, well-written, funny
and entertaining look at what is wrong with our legal mindset in

                    Book Description

Harvesting Development is a sophisticated and authoritative analysis of the transition from a subsistence to a market economy in the Papua New Guinea fresh food trade. Drawing upon actor-oriented and social constructivist concepts, Karl Benediktsson skillfully builds a systematic framework for analysis around three critical issues: the social embeddedness of markets, the uneven historical and spatial configuration of commoditization processes, and the key role played by social actors and organizing practices in the shaping of global/local change.
In so doing, he demonstrates the central importance of "social agency" in the creation of markets of various types, in the changing meanings accorded to exchange transactions, and in the development of social networks and power constellations.
Harvesting Development skillfully and inventively interweaves theoretical constructs with a detailed ethnography of marketing networks in the rural village and the urban marketplace, as well as in the "spaces in between."
Benediktsson shows the rural community not as an isolated universe but as one consisting of dynamic linkages and networks that extend far beyond the locality. At the same time, he demonstrates the crucial importance of local actors--with their own agendas and interpretations of the metanarrative of "development"--in shaping the outcome of the market integration process.
This work tackles processes and problems that few ethnographers have made their central concern and so will be essential reading for Melanesianists. It will also be of obvious relevance to geographers, anthropologists, sociologists, economists, and anyone dealing with development issues.
Karl Benediktsson is Lecturer in Human and Economic Geography, University of Iceland.

                              Book Description

In order to equip hopeful graduate students with the knowledge necessary to pass the qualifying examination, the authors have assembled and solved standard and original problems from major American universities – Boston University, University of Chicago, University of Colorado at Boulder, Columbia, University of Maryland, University of Michigan, Michigan State, Michigan Tech, MIT, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Stony Brook, University of Wisconsin at Madison – and Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. A wide range of material is covered and comparisons are made between similar problems of different schools to provide the student with enough information to feel comfortable and confident at the exam. Guide to Physics Problems is published in two volumes: this book, Part 1, covers Mechanics, Relativity and Electrodynamics; Part 2 covers Thermodynamics, Statistical Mechanics and Quantum Mechanics.

Praise for A Guide to Physics Problems: Part 1: Mechanics, Relativity, and Electrodynamics:

"Sidney Cahn and Boris Nadgorny have energetically collected and presented solutions to about 140 problems from the exams at many universities in the United States and one university in Russia, the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology. Some of the problems are quite easy, others are quite tough; some are routine, others ingenious." (From the Foreword by C. N. Yang, Nobelist in Physics, 1957)

"Generations of graduate students will be grateful for its existence as they prepare for this major hurdle in their careers." (R. Shankar, Yale University)

"The publication of the volume should be of great help to future candidates who must pass this type of exam." (J. Robert Schrieffer, Nobelist in Physics, 1972)

"I was positively impressed … The book will be useful to students who are studying for their examinations and to faculty who are searching for appropriate problems." (M. L. Cohen, University of California at Berkeley)

"If a student understands how to solve these problems, they have gone a long way toward mastering the subject matter." (Martin Olsson, University of Wisconsin at Madison)

"This book will become a necessary study guide for graduate students while they prepare for their Ph.D. examination. It will become equally useful for the faculty who write the questions." (G. D. Mahan, University of Tennessee at Knoxville)

4 out of 5 stars classical physics quals.......2004-10-22

I used this book to pass my classical physics quals at caltech. See my review of Cahn's quantum problem book for details, and why I think this is better than Yung-kuo.
The difference with the classical one is that there were a few concepts I had to study that were not really in the book. Overall though, I still thought that this was a great collection of problems. If I had just done the problems in this book and nothing else, I probably still would have passed.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for all budding physicists.......2001-09-25

This book is rather elementary for the graduate level, but does a great job at explaining concepts clearly, concisely, and eloquently, using laymen terms where appropriate. I also deeply appreciate the occasional comedy implemented by the author. I would personally recommend "The Essential Collection of Elegant Solutions for Doctoral Physics Qualifying Exams," by Shijun Liu (2000).

5 out of 5 stars A excellent collection of intriguing physics problems.......1999-10-08

This book contains physics problems from many great universities and is a must for all students in Physics. The problems are all very original and the solutions given are very elegant. I will recommend this book to all people who enjoy solving Physics problems.

                              5 out of 5 stars good.......1999-03-10
