Perhaps nothing has shaped the American century more than the emergence of management as a discipline in the corporate workplace. In The Capitalist Philosophers, Andrea Gabor explores this phenomenon by profiling the personalities and ideas of the most influential management thinkers of the 20th century. Among those that Gabor writes about are Robert S. McNamara, the former Secretary of Defense and pioneering bean counter at Ford Motor; Peter F. Drucker, the "big idea man" and guru to giants such as General Electric; W. Edwards Deming, the late star of the "quality movement"; and Mary Parker Follett, an early advocate of collaborative management.

One of the many threads that hold together Gabor's profiles is the issue of "two seemingly irreconcilable visions of management--the scientific and humanistic." She writes that humanists see the corporation "as a pivotal institution of democracy with complex responsibilities to a host of constituencies, including its employees, its customers, and the community. The other, much more utilitarian, view recognizes one corporate constituent--the shareholder--and a single purpose--profit making." The Capitalist Philosophers is for anyone seeking a sweeping, well-written history of American business. It's also a rich look at the philosophical underpinnings of newer management approaches that are rolling through the workplace today, such as re-engineering and Six Sigma. --Dan Ring

Book Description

In The Capitalist Philosophers, critically acclaimed writer Andrea Gabor tells the epic story of American business through the lives, times, and ideas of the great thinkers who defined the art and science of business. It is a book full of colorful stories and brilliant insights into why the business world is the way it is today.

People in business are constantly besieged by supposedly revolutionary ideas. Any company that went on a crash diet in response to the trendy precepts of Reengineering the Corporation felt the enormous impact still exercised by one of the first capitalist philosophers, Frederick Taylor. By going back to the source, Gabor helps businesspeople make smart, informed decisions about the future.
Featured in The Capitalist Philosophers are: Frederick Taylor: "Production went to his head and filled his sleepless nerves like liquor or women on a Saturday night."
Mary Parker Follett, who understood that "only so far as business leaders . . . can identify themselves with the underlying social impulses of their time can they hope to plan and build great organizations."
Chester Barnard, the philosopher king, who believed that management's job is to get things done by persuasion.
Fritz Roethlisberger and Elton Mayo, the creative misfits who "invented" human relations and put Harvard Business School on the map.
Robert McNamara, the "Whiz Kid," whose pioneering work in control and quantitative methods at Ford and the Department of Defense have had such a great influence on American management.
Abraham Maslow and Douglas McGregor, the pathfinders of humanistic management.
W. Edwards Deming, "the man who discovered quality" and the prophet of the learning organization.
Herbert Simon, Nobel laureate, pioneer in artificial intelligence and cognitive psychology, renegade economist and management pathbreaker, whose ideas on decision making have been vastly influential.
Alfred Chandler, who laid the basis for the way we think about corporate strategy, and Alfred Sloan, whose My Years at General Motors is the most important business book ever published.
Peter Drucker, who "gives you thoughts that are large."
As Andrea Gabor notes in her Introduction, "Contrary to common wisdom, it is possible for individuals to have a major impact on history. Just as FDR and Margaret Sanger changed the way we think about, respectively, politics and sexuality, so the capitalist philosophers have changed the way we look at the dominant institution in our society--the corporation."

5 out of 5 stars Business Consulting 601.......2007-02-13

I've assigned this book as reading for my Million Dollar Consulting College Grad School. It's a superb history of a group of people who have defined business strategy, orgnaizational development, culture change, and other business dynamics. It is historical, including people like Elton Mayo; diverse, with people like Mary Parker Follet; and contemporary, with people like the recently deceased Peter Drucker. Each of the subjects rates a brief biography which includes his or her own background, contributions, and legacy. The book is really a required piece for any serious business consultant.

4 out of 5 stars Tracing the development of modern management thought.......2003-09-21

In this book, business journalist Andrea Gabor traces the contributions of several key management thinkers and practitioners, and how their efforts shaped both the modern American corporation and popular notions of it. By chronicling well known (such as F.W. Taylor and Robert McNamara) and less known (such as Mary Parker Follett and Fritz Roethlisberger) figures, Gabor succeeds in illustrating how their ideas built on one another and in many cases anticipated by decades the challenges managers would -- and continue -- to face.

The result of Gabor's efforts is not solely a survey of prominent people, but rather a nuanced discussion of the development of what proved to be some of the 20th century's most influential thoughts on management, irrespective of the originator's fame. This approach has several benefits. First, it accurately maps the development of fundamental theories of the corporation's role in society without bowing to the cults of personality around certain writers. Next, it demonstrates how ideas may be attributable not just to one genius, but to several individuals who may articulate similar thoughts in response to changes in society and work life.

For readers looking to understand the development of management theory, this book is an excellent place to start. For all readers, Gabor makes this an entertaining book by describing in detail the personal qualities of these figures, and how their backgrounds and work experiences shaped the perspectives they brought to bear on the early problems of management.

4 out of 5 stars The Philosophers of Capitalism.......2002-12-21

The capitalilst philolospher is a great novel. It goes in depth in to how profound capitalist made their mark, and also their faults. So as a reader you get to see what they did, and what they could have done to better. It gives a great foundation on how capitalism came to be, and how it has developed in the last centuries.

4 out of 5 stars Adding value by integrating business history.......2000-05-30

The general idea of the book is that scientific and humanistic management theories interacted and developed over the century. The author makes explicit issues that guided and constrained the thinkers' ideas. The author reviews the contributions of Frederick Taylor, Mary Parker Follett, Elton Mayo, Chester Barnard, Abraham Maslow, Herbert Simon, Robert McNamara, Alfred Chandler, W. Edwards Deming, and Peter Drucker. The book examines the philosophers' contributions, and shows how these thinkers affected business thingking and practice.

      Book Description

Privacy, regulations to protect privacy, and data protection have been legal and social issues in many Western countries for a number of decades. However, recent measures to combat terrorism, fight crime, and increase security, together with the growing social acceptance of privacy-invasive technologies can be considered a serious threat to the fundamental right to privacy. The Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology, and Society have undertaken a research project examining the reasonable expectations of privacy and the reality of data protection. The project is aimed at developing an international research network of privacy experts and to carry out research on the practice, meaning, and legal performance of privacy and data protection in an international perspective. The eleven country reports examine case law on video surveillance and workplace privacy. The conclusions are intended to trigger and stimulate an international debate on the use and possible drawbacks of the 'reasonable expectations of privacy' concept.

From the author: The "reasonable expectation of privacy" test, which defines the scope of constitutional protection from governmental privacy intrusions in both the United States and Canada, is notoriously indeterminate. This indeterminacy stems in large measure from the tendency of judges to think of privacy in non-instrumentalist terms. This "moral" approach to privacy is normatively questionable, and it does a poor job of identifying the circumstances in which privacy should prevail over countervailing interests, such as the deterrence of crime. In this Article, I develop an alternative, economically-informed approach to the reasonable expectation of privacy test. In contrast to the moral approach, which treats privacy as a fundamental right, the economic approach views it as an (normatively neutral) aspect of self-interest: the desire to conceal and control potentially damaging personal information. According to this view, privacy should not be protected when its primary effect is to impede the optimal deterrence of crime. In other cases, however, legal protections against governmental surveillance may enhance social welfare by encouraging productive transactions, diminishing the costs of non-legal privacy barriers, and limiting suboptimal policing practices such as discriminatory profiling and the enforcement of inefficient criminal prohibitions. Economics and public choice theory can also help to minimize decision-making error by predicting which legal actors--police, legislatures, or courts--are best placed to make optimal trade-offs between privacy and crime control.

"We are at a most interesting moment in the history of science. Classical science emphasized equilibrium, stability, and time reversibility. Now we see instabilities, fluctuations, evolution on all levels of observations. This change of perspective requires new tools, new concepts. This volume invites the reader not to an enumeration of final achievements of contemporary science, but to an excursion to science in the making." —from the Foreword by I. Prigogine

What are the dynamical roots of irreversibility? How can past and future be distinguished on the fundamental level of description? Are human beings the children of time —or its progenitors? In recent years, a growing number of chemists and physicists have agreed that the solution to the problem of irreversibility requires an extension of classical and quantum mechanics. There is, however, no consensus on which direction this extension should take to include the dynamical description of irreversible processes.

Resonances, Instability, and Irreversibility surveys recent attempts —both direct and indirect —to address the problem of irreversibility. Internationally recognized researchers report on their recent studies, which run the gamut from experimental to highly mathematical. The subject matter of these papers falls into three categories: classical systems with emphasis on chaos and dynamical instability, resonances and unstable quantum systems, and the general problem of irreversibility.

Presenting the cutting edge of research into some of the most compelling questions that face contemporary chemical physics, Resonances, Instability, and Irreversibility is fascinating reading for professionals and students in every area of the discipline.

This volume of advances in Chemical Physics presents a selection of pathways in the formulation of irreversible quantum mechanics. A problem related is the extension of Hilbert space.

                                  T. Petrosky and I. Prigogine show a new formulation of dynamic laws on the statistical level for "large Poincare systems". Several examples are use to illustrate the general formalism.

The framework for a formulation of unstable quantum states with regard to the study of neutral Kaon system is presented by E. C. G. Sudarshan, Charles B. Chiu and G. Bhamath.

The quantum chemistry E. J. Brändas characterizes complex systems and the question of irrevesibility using the complex scaling method. Brändas also suggest a microscopic self-organization.

"Time, irreversibility and unstable systems in quantum physics" is the title for the E. Eisenberg and L. P. Horwitz's work. The autors rewiev the Lax-Phillips theory and its applications to the measurement process and quantum scattering theory.

                                  I. Antoniu and Z. Suchanecki provide the natural framework for the discussion of general problem of irreversibility. They also derive the Pauly master equation without resorting to the thermodynamics limit and establish a clear definition of states and observables with the diagonal singularity.

The paper by V. V. Kocharovsky and Vl. V. Kocharovsky presents nonadiabatic effects concerned with quantum optics and chemistry of excited molecules.

"Can be observed microscopic chaos in the laboratory?" by Pierre Gaspard shows the links between dynamical randomnes, Lyapunov exponents and entropy.

In the last chapter C. A. Chatzdimitriou-Dreisman provides new experimentally verifiable consequences of CSM theory of qunatum correlations (for protons only) in the framework of dynamical processes in large and dense systems.

                                    Book Description

This is the second in a two volume series discussing the theories of Einstein, Newton and other ideas of late 19th and early 20th century physics as in-depth research and basis for Barbour's theory that time is an illusion. This volume gives a comprehensive survey of the major issues associated with the transition in our understanding of the nature of space and motion that came with Einstein's theory of general relativity. Einstein's work and thoughts are critically reexamined in their historical context of Mach's earlier reinterpretation of Newton's arguments for absolute space, and other ideas in physics of the time. Along with its new interpretations, this book is an excellent guide to the deeper philosophical implications of general relativity, and has much to contribute to the studies relevant to the current effort to create a quantum theory of gravity.

5 out of 5 stars Old Time Comedy.......2007-06-27

Although it's been forty years since I have read any Roman comedy in the Latin, I can still enjoy what Plautus and Terence wrote over two thousand years ago. As for the translations, the rhyme scemes used for the different characters and parts of the plot make the play come to life. While laughing at the unfolding story I marveled at the ryhmes and the alliterations. It also didn't hurt that Dr. Douglass Parker was my advisor at the University of California at Riverside, lo those many years ago.

3 out of 5 stars Too colloquial but otherwise good.......2003-05-02

The translations are a bit too colloquial for my taste. In some plays for instance the names are changes, or a character is said to have a Bronx accent! The translators goal was to have lively and performable versions, and they do, so this may not bother everyone.

Each play has a simple stage diagram, and some notes on what the stage should be like (eg, the first house should be grand and imposing, but the neighboring house is small and unimpressive). The stage directions are good. Short helpful introduction.

The book physically is splendid, with nice easy to read type, and the speakers names in full, offset to make them clear.

                                    3 out of 5 stars The translation isn't great.......2000-05-29

I enjoyed the plays but would have liked a better translation. The many liberties that were taken in the translation of the text doesn't do the language justice. It made the translation more comprehensive for the modern reader, but the beauty and poetry of the writing was lost. The repetition of sounds and synonyms was profuse and often became annoying. Otherwise, the plays themselves were great fun and a delight to read. This anthology provides a good sampling of Roman comedy as well as good examples of the continuing themes in the genre. I would recommend it for someone new to the field.
