A multi-country research initiative to understand poverty from the eyes of the poor, the Voices of the Poor project was undertaken to inform the World Bank's activities and the upcoming World Development Report 2000/01. The research findings are being published in three books: "Can Anyone Hear Us?" gathers the voices of over 40,000 poor women and men in 50 countries from the World Bank's participatory poverty assessments (Deepa Narayan, Raj Patel, Kai Schafft, Anne Rademacher, and Sarah Koch-Schulte, authors). "Crying Out for Change" pulls together new field work conducted in 1999 in 23 countries (Deepa Narayan, Robert Chambers, Meera Shah, and Patti Petesch, authors). "From Many Lands" offers regional patterns and country case-studies (Deepa Narayan and Patti Petesch, editors). Voices of the Poor marks the first time such an exercise has been undertaken in so many developing countries and transition economies around the world. It provides a unique and detailed picture of the life of the poor and explains the constraints poor people face to escape from poverty in a way that more traditional survey techniques do not capture well. Each of the three volumes demonstrates the importance of voice and power in poor people's definition of poverty. Voices of the Poor concludes that we need to expand our conventional views of poverty which focus on income expenditure, education, and health to include measures of voice and empowerment.

As the second book in a three-part series entitled Voices of the Poor, " Crying out for Change " accounts for the voices from comparative fieldwork among twenty three countries. Through participatory, and qualitative research methods, the book presents very directly, poor people ' s own voices, and the realities of their lives. It outlines the multidimensional aspects of well-being, and how poor people see it, highlighting that in material terms, " enough " is not a lot for a good life, and, analyzes social well-being, security, and freedom of choice and action, in contrast to the " ill-being " aspects of material absence, reflecting on the experiences of humiliation, shame, anguish. and grief. The struggle for livelihoods is described through the scarcity of rural production, the diversified cities ' bondage, and, the limited opportunities of life, and individual breakthroughs challenging their livelihoods. Further analysis reflect on the inadequacy, isolation, and lack of access to infrastructure; on the health aspects of mind and body; on gender relations in troubled subjugation; on social exclusion; and, on the uncertainties for survival. It finally challenges the meaning of development, and of power, calling for change, from material poverty to adequate assets and livelihoods, from exclusion to inclusion, organization, and empowerment.

This book is the second in a trilogy of books on the issue of poverty and human development undertaken by the World Bank. It is estimated that there are 2.8 billion poor people around the world and this book will tell you stories about 20,000 of them from 23 countries in Africa and the Middle East (like Egypt and Zambia), Eastern Europe and Central Asia (like Bosnia and Uzbekistan), Latin America (like Argentina and Jamaica) and South and East Asia (like Bangladesh and Vietnam).
The idea began in 1998, planning during 1998 and field studies in 1999 with final reports targeted for the 2000 World Development Report. A very impressive and quick research study that in this book focus on well-being and ill-being, problems and priorities, role of institutions and the role of gender relations. For each of the 23 countries a national research team selected 8-15 communities to be representative of the target population of poor people with field interviews and studies performed in a short time span, sometimes under very stressful and sometimes dangerous situations.
The authors of this book then had to go through about 10,000 pages of field notes and national reports from 23 countries and make a useful and readable book out of it. They have really done a good and impressive job out of it. The pages are the stories of many experts on poverty, not from academics or universities, but from the mouth of the poor person him-or herself and there is a lot to learn. Seven themes for change emerge:
· From material poverty to adequate assets and livelihoods
· From isolation and poor infrastructure to access and services
· From illness and incapability to health, information and education
· From unequal and troubled gender relations to equity and harmony
· From fear and lack of protection to peace and security
· From exclusion and impotence to inclusion, organization and empowerment
· From corruption and abuse to honesty and fair treatment
A powerful statement for change that we hope the World Bank will be instrumental in fullfilling, so that the dream of a world free of poverty can someday soon come true.

Excellent...simply Different from Others! Buy it now..........2001-08-23

As a French student and now as an MBA graduate student from an American University, I had the opportunity to read several books from both the US and from Europe. This one is simply excellent!

You can find other great books like those written by Myers, Ross and so on. They all give a good overview of corporate finance issues. But something is missing in all these books: a more friendly and a less institutional approach. You can find that in the book written by Balbirer and Shapiro.

In my opinion, you can use this book in two ways. Either you are looking for a particular issue. Then you will see how this book is well organized and how the content is strong, concise and interesting. Or you can do like I did. Read this book for pleasure and enjoy how the authors reformulate the same point, the same ideas in three or four different ways in the same paragraph to make sure that you can understand. And that is the main strenght of this book. Whatever topic you pick up in ordinaries (even excellent) Finance books, you might have to read a paragraph two or three times to really get it. In this one, just enjoy how the authors try to take different perspectives to explain things...only one reading is required to understand!

I think this book is more appropriate for undergraduate students even if it is a great introductory book for MBA students or people without any financial background. It covers a lot of different topics so you can consider that as a first (strong) or a secondary Corporate Finance book. However, I don't think that it would be appropriate for very advanced Finance major students. The latter could however consider it as their new reference books where they can come to pick up some information they might have forgotten in previous classes.

My advice...just by it or you will miss something.

The Good Apprentice sucked me into reading Iris Murdoch about 20 years ago. I have since worked my way, with immense pleasure, through all her novels. I'm reading GA for the second time, and I find I have less patience now for the long philosophical soliloquies of the characters. But the novel reminds me how well Murdoch indulges her readers' love a good plot and richly imagined and deliciously flawed characters, all revolving around a Great Man, who may not be but probably is somewhat of a charlatan. Reading Murdoch is the best way I know to combine a love of philosophy--and excellent writing--with a hankering for soap opera. GA is a good place to start reading Murdoch (and come back to).

With all the attention given to the life of Iris Murdoch over the last few years, and having become familiar with some of her philosophy, I looked forward to reading my first Murdoch novel. The Good Apprentice kept my attention well enough for me to finish it, hence the three stars. The author's craftsmanship is quite evident but beyond that, I don't know that I could recommend it, particularly as the place for someone to begin reading Murdoch's fiction. My primary reason may seem trite, but I just can't help it. These characters are annoying. Typically, I can find atleast one sympathetic character in a work of fiction. These people basically just got on my nerves. From popmpous and obnoxious to neurotic and self-indulgent, a full spectrum of negative personality traits are portrayed. The multiple plot lines all resolve, but in far too tidy a fashion, and the various resolutions are both annoying and dissapointing, because it's it questionable to me as to to whether anyone experiences any growth. As a reader, you leave the book knowing that Thomas will remain aloof, Midge will remain neurotic, Harry will remain obnoxious, Edward will remain self-indulgent, and Stuart will continue to drift through life trying to figure out how to do some "good". As I said, I will probably give Murdoch another go, and hopefully, I'll find someone among her characters along the way that I might actually relate to or care about.

Good intentions & the pursuit of happiness.......2003-01-14

What happens when loving intentions result in disastrous outcomes? Iris Murdoch's, The Good Apprentice, features gothic ancestral dwellings, a trio of eccentric women, peculiar, seedy London séances, modern psychiatry, upper-class contemporary love affairs and infidelity, intense family relationships and questing for worthy missions in order to justify individual lives. I didn't easily breeze through this book neither could I put it down. Murdoch's heavy philosophical background is excruciatingly evident. However, I knew I was in the hands of a great artist when I laughed out loud with delight in passages. I look forward to reading more of her writing.

murdoch's genius.......2001-12-09

This is one of the three superb long novels Murdoch published in the second half of the 80s. The characters are brilliantly drawn, especially the psychiatrist Thomas, his friend the ambitious, talented but frustrated Harry Cuno, and Harry's son Stuart, the good apprentice of the title. Underneath the typical Murdochian plot twists, the novel tackles profound themes, including depression and mental illness, guilt and forgiveness, and the impact of technology on human relations. The parts of the novel set in London are stronger than those set in the country. Her genius is fully on display here.
