Any business that is open-minded and willing to build an entrepreneurial culture would do well by reading this book. Command-and-control leaders might want to re-read 'Art of War' and skip this one. It's not for them.
This book is a refreshing view on how operating a business can be simplified and still be successful.
Way to go Blues Clues!
I just figured out Blue Clues.......2003-01-31
I love Blues Clues. I have 3 young children who have learned much from this show. First chapter started out well, point of having a clear mission was well stated and inspirational. BUT - after that this wound up being a very biased commercial for Blues Clues. What was probably a great outline for a business book wound up being a 224 page commercial. Other than now having a book on my bookshelf that jumps out to other parents(because of color and paw print), and a work related book that my kids like the cover of; this book offers no real substance.
This book was such a commercial for the Blues Clues show, merchandise, traveling live show, food, etc. that Diane Tracy and her buddies at Blues Clues should have paid me.
She really needed to gain her objectivity before writing. Blues Clues is probably a great company, that does have a great product. There is way too much description of the various Blues Clues Products and too little of how the business got there.

What a fabulous resource! As the Founding Director of a fledgling non-profit business and the mother of two really smart kids who have been watching Blue's Clues since it's very first year, I wrote to thank Diane for her new book. I've only begun to read business-related books this year, and I've found the selection to be so overwhelming that I usually rely on the library rather than purchasing something that is likely to have only one or two nuggets of useful information. Also, the writing style and attitude of the author makes such a difference as to whether I can get something out of a book-- I knew I'd never learn anything from the ones that liken the marketplace to a combat zone or advise women entrepreneurs to 'think like a man'. But when I saw "Blue's Clues for Success" in the airport bookstore (attracted of course by the blue cover and the puppy herself!), I bought it immediately, knowing that if my business could emulate the Blue's Clues 'phenomenon' even slightly, it would help us succeed.
What a breath of fresh air! It made me feel that running a business *can* be fun!
Since it's beginning in 1996, I have appreciated every educational, musical, and parenting aspect of the Blue's Clues show. This book allowed me to appreciate the business aspects of the show as well. Although my tiny start-up company is completely different from the huge television production giant that is Nick Jr., Diane made the lessons for success as easy to follow and understand as... well, as pawprints! I know the Clues for Success will help us carry out our mission and deliver an effective service... and it will be so cool to look back and be able to attribute some of our success to Blue and her creators!

Diane Tracy's book offers power-ideas for taking your business to the next level. Many times, business books can be dry, but Diane makes hers a page-turner from start to finish!
Blue's Success.......2002-09-05
Blue's Clues for success an interesting look at some of the main success factors contributing to the Blue's Clues huge success. As one might suspect there isn't a single factor that can be singled out, but rather a set of interrelated factors that help make Blue's Clues a success.
The author, Diane Tracy, does a great job in providing examples of Blue's clues team living out these success clues. One intriguing thread to this book is the level of balance that the Blue's Clues team seems to have across all of these clues.
Here is the list of the eight blues clues for success:
1. Mobilize the energy in you organization by turning you mission into mantras
2. Know you customer
3. Stay connected to your customer through research
4. Be the master of, not the slave to, you technology
5. Create work processes that serve your customers and enable your people to do the best.
6. Brand your products or company
7. Provide leadership that meets the needs of people, so they can meet the needs of customers
8. Consciously manage your culture the way you manage every other aspect of your business
Blue's Clues for success includes exercises at a business level and personal level for each clue and how it can be applied.
At some level this book represents an interesting case study of how living out these clues can contribute to a vibrant business. Equally interesting is that each business must search for the answers to these clues and they will be different for each business. To be effective these clues must be answered with the specifics of your mission, business, customers, technology and processes.
I found the chapters on mission, research, technology and process to be extremely interesting. I though Diane Tracy had particularly keen insights into people, process and technology.

Incredibly useful for dealing with suppliers & supply chains.......2000-05-05
I found this book to be very valuable in my dealings with suppliers. It does a wonderful job of driving home the point that a company's performance is linked to (and often limited by) the performance of its suppliers. When looking at a supply chain, the suppliers are the first link and therefore their impact runs deep and wide as the chain continues. Although this book is a bit advanced to be very helpful to supply chain management (SCM) beginners, I strongly recommend it for anyone involved with SCM issues such as supplier certification, supplier reviews, etc.

This book offers great coverage of the TE standard. It deals with each element in understandable language which helped me grasp the standard better. I bought the book to learn about R&M and it covers this subject well. It also covers TE implementation, APQP, and preparing for the certification audit. The last 1/2 of the book is filled with example Quality Manual, Procedures and Work Instructions. I am happy I spent the money for the book. It was well worth it.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: All organizations, both private and public, must improve, streamline, and automate their business practices to adjust to rigorous demands of a highly volatile marketplace, austere financial resources, and manpower reductions. This thesis analyzes the potential of business process reengineering (BPR) to dramatically improve the Military Pay Document Process (MPDP) for the United States Army and the United States Coast Guard financial communities. Based on Nissen's methodology the MPDP is analyzed and three redesign alternatives are developed, which are capable of yielding order of magnitude improvements in cycle time and cost. This thesis includes process simulation and intelligent systems analysis of the Army and Coast Guard's baseline MPDP to generate and evaluate the three redesign alternatives. Simulation runs demonstrate that cycle time and cost can be reduced substantially by redesigning the MPDP. The redesign alternatives take a comprehensive look at transformation enablers and information technology (IT) capable of eliminating the Personnel Administrative Clerks (PAC) and the finance office functions as they pertain to pay transaction processing. The research concludes that the Army and Coast Guard's MPDP can be dramatically improved by eliminating middlemen functions (PAC and finance office) and shortening the value chain using IT along with other transformation enablers.

Feels great.......2002-08-26
Anyone who has read literature knows the best and most noteworthy volumes. This is not necessarily because the work is 'well written' or conveys ideas easily to the reader, or because someone else says it's good. Good literature is the work that has a completely positive effect upon the reader. I have been reading serious literature for several years now, and A Sportsman's Notebook is quite possibly the most wonderful literary work I have yet encountered. If I'm feeling down, I crack it open, and by the time I'm done reading I feel better. If I'm feeling good, it makes me feel that much better. Turgenev's words ring true in this volume -- to me it's as sweet as candy.
A Desert Island Necessary.......2002-01-12
This fine gem of a book typifies the sort of volume that one must be able to extract from the water-logged valise when the steamer has gone down and one finds oneself stranded on the proverbial desert island. After 30 years of rather serious reading, I still tend to think that Turgenev is one of the finest authors ever to put ink to paper. A Sportsman's Notebook is a wonderful place to start an exploration of Russian literature. Now, if I can just find my tramp steamer tickets.

This book has some of the best short fiction ever written. Hemingway said, "Tolstoy wrote the best books, BUT TURGENEV WAS THE GREATEST WRITER." And then he went on to praise the short story "A Rattle of Wheels" above all other Turgenev stories. So if Hemingway thought Turgenev the greatest writer, and "Rattle of Wheels" the greatest story he wrote, then he certainly thought "Rattle of Wheels" the greatest short story ever written (aside from his own works, of course, egomaniac that he was). And "Rattle of Wheels" is in this collection. I personally prefer "The Singers". Read this collection. You won't regret it.

This book taught me everything I know about fly fishing. This comes from the author of the "Tap's Tips" column in Field and Stream. A rare jem! Horace Tapply is obviously one of the greatest fly fishermen of his day. This book explores fishing in Lake Winnepesaukee and the Pine River. It's handy size is convenient for canoe travel -- I can tell you my copy has fallen into the lake on a number of occasions! The author reminds me of my grandfather, who used to encourage me to get out there and fish!
