1 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.......2003-09-10

This book is a joke. Apart from the typos and syntax errors, the content is weak.

There is very little information regarding doing business on the course, just golf etiquitte in general and stories about people who happened to have some success building business relationships.

I got the distinct impression that the authors would rather have written a book on their history of covering pros, but decided that a book on business on the course would sell better.

2 out of 5 stars my advice is to keep looking.......2002-08-19

This book is not for the non-golfer looking for reasons to take up the game. Full of golf lingo and references to past tournaments (you *do* remember the surprise ending of the Such-and-Such tournament in 1988, don't you?), it will leave new golfers scratching their heads wondering what's the point of most of the stories presented here. Other than that, the book is very poorly written and even more poorly edited, with far more than its share of misspelled words, run-on sentences and sentence fragments. Certainly there is a need for books on how to conduct business on the golf course, but there have to be better books than this one on the subject. My advice is to keep looking.

The is a quick read and a must-have for developing business relationships. The organization of the book makes it a good reference tool as well. I wish all business golfers would read this. The game of golf would be better off.

5 out of 5 stars A NECESSARY RESOURCE.......2002-04-09

It's a shame I didn't have this book 30 years ago. I've been entertaining clients on the golf course for that period of time and unfortunately, relying on my own inexperience, made some of the mistakes that mastering this book would have avoided. If golf is going to be part of your marketing plan, you have to have this book on your shelf.

Book Description

This book presents a radically different argument for what has caused, and likely will continue to cause, the collapse of emerging market economies. Pettis combines the insights of economic history, economic theory, and finance theory into a comprehensive model for understanding sovereign liability management and the causes of financial crises. He examines recent financial crises in emerging market countries along with the history of international lending since the 1820s to argue that the process of international lending is driven primarily by external events and not by local politics and/or economic policies. He draws out the corporate finance implications of this approach to argue that most of the current analyses of the recent financial crises suffered by Latin America, Asia, and Russia have largely missed the point. He then develops a sovereign finance model, analogous to corporate finance, to understand the capital structure needs of emerging market countries. Using this model, he finally puts into perspective the recent crises, a new sovereign liability management theory, the implications of the model for sovereign debt restructurings, and the new financial architecture. Bridging the gap between finance specialists and traders, on the one hand, and economists and policy-makers on the other, The Volatility Machine is critical reading for anyone interested in where the international economy is going over the next several years.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended!.......2007-03-23

I needed to have background knowledge of the Emerging Markets and this book was recommended by a colleague.

4 out of 5 stars Exonerates the hedge funds.......2003-03-01

One of the most common (mis)interpretations of the east Asian currency crises of the late 1990s is that they were caused by George Soros and other speculators, hedge fund principals for the most part, who shorted those currencies and the respective bonds in order to create a self-fulfilling prophecy.

I was happy to se that Mr. Pettis knows better. He writes that he was in regular contact with three large macro hedge funds in 1997, in his capacity as an emerging markets specialist for Bear Stearns, "including the most famous of these, and our discussions about Asia generally centered on ways to gain protected access to LONG rupiah positions. There was very little interest in shorting the currency."

Indonesia and its rupiah provides a particularly vivid example of the capital structure trap that Pettis adumbrates so admirably in this book.

5 out of 5 stars A refreshing view.......2001-07-05

Michael Pettis has succeeded in mystifying the collapse of EM economies. His approach is new and indeed very methodical. I found the book intellectually challenging and have learned quite a lot reading it. I highly recommend it for those who want to understand how LDC economies rise and fall. Having a background in corpporate finance is crucial to enjoying the book though.

5 out of 5 stars Understand What's Happening In Emerging Markets.......2001-05-05

This is a MUST READ for institutional investors worldwide! For the first time I have a confident sense of what is at the core of emerging market instability. Now if only some government policy makers would read this (even they would understand it!), the causal conditions might start to improve.

5 out of 5 stars A breakthrough in economic theory.......2001-02-14

This book completely transformed the way I think about sovereign financial crises. Michael Pettis creates a simple yet elegant framework by which to think of sovereign crises, the fundametal problems which precede them and potential solutions. This book should be every finance minister's primary reference tool for the development of sovereign capital structure.

      Book Description

David Gray Carlson and Peter Goodrich argue that the postmodern legal mind can be characterized as having shifted the focus of legal analysis away from the modernist understanding of law as a system that is unitary and separate from other aspects of culture and society. In exploring the various "other dimensions" of law, scholars have developed alternative species of legal analysis and recognized the existence of different forms of law. Carlson and Goodrich assert that the postmodern legal mind introduced a series of "minor jurisprudences" or partial forms of legal knowledge, which both compete with and subvert the modernist conception of a unitary system of law. In doing so scholars from a variety of disciplines pursue the implications of applying the insights of their disciplines to law. Carlson and Goodrich have assembled in this volume essays from some of our leading thinkers that address what is arguably one of the most fundamental of interdisciplinary encounters, that of psychoanalysis and law.
While psychoanalytic interpretations of law are by no means a novelty within common law jurisprudence, the extent and possibilities of the terrain opened up by psychoanalysis have yet to be extensively addressed. The intentional subject and "reasonable man" of law are disassembled in psychoanalysis to reveal a chaotic and irrational libidinal subject, a sexual being, a body and its drives. The focus of the present collection of essays is upon desire as an inner law, upon love as an interior idiom of legality, and represents a signficant and at times surprising development of the psychoanalytic analysis of legality.
These essays should appeal to scholars in law and in psychology.
The contributors are Drucilla Cornell, Jacques Derrida, Peter Goodrich, Pierre Legendre, Alain Pottage, Michel Rosenfeld, Renata Salecl, Jeanne L. Schroeder, Anton Schutz, Henry Staten, and Slavoj Zizek.
David Gray Carlson is Professor of Law, Benjamin Cardozo School of Law, Yeshiva University. Peter Goodrich is Professor of Law, University of London and University of California, Los Angeles.

        Book Description

The book explains, for the first time, how Zimbabwe's smallholders brought about agricultural and social transformations in the 1980s and diverged from the African norm of "urban bias." Drawing from field research findings, the book illustrates how these transformations affected a range of rural households and, most importantly, provides a political explanation for the transformations which includes the political voice of smallholders. Three conditions have been important in the development of smallholder voice and influence: a rural-based ruling coalition; rural organizations and farmer unions; and regular multi-party elections. Smallholder influence helped bring independence and, afterwards, the sustained redistribution of agricultural and social services and consistent rises in producer prices which made rural transformation possible. In sum, the book demonstrates that, in an African country, small-scale farmers can express political voice, influence government and transform rural life.

          Book Description

"A splendid introduction to geology and paleontology for the lay reader. To compress Earth's history into a single, lucidly written volume is a major achievement."--Publishers Weekly, starred review.

"Few people have both the knowledge and the writing ability to capture such a long and varied history in a compelling manner. In A Short History of Planet Earth, J.D. Macdougal demonstrates that he is one of the few."--Earth.

This exhilarating survey of the four and half billion years of Earth's history charts both the geological and biological history of the planet. It moves from the origin of the earth's iron core to the formation of today's seven continents, and from the primordial building blocks of life to the evolution of the human form.

J.D. MACDOUGALL (San Diego, California) is a professor of earth science at the Scripps Oceanographic Institute of the University of California, San Diego, the premier center for earth science research in the U.S. His work has appeared in Scientific American and the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology.

          3 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2006-03-10

I expected this book to be about its title, but it was only half that. The other half was explaining geological techniques- something I couldn't have cared less about while I was reading this book. I was and am still interested in the geologic and evolutionary history of earth. When I bought this book that's what I thought I was getting. Instead, about half the pages were taken up with geologic tools, such as carbon dating. I wasn't interested in how you determined the age of a rock, but only the age of the rock and what that implied.

Also, at the end (the last chapter) he talked about the disasters that are about to occur, unless all of our money is funnelled into geologists pockets, so they can tell us what to be afraid of.

Overall, the book was okay because it delivered on at least part of what I wanted to know, but spent too much time on saying "look at all the cool things I can do". Just tell me about earth's history, not how you determined it.

4 out of 5 stars Natural History in a Nutshell.......2006-01-17

The general reader can hardly do better than J.D. Macdougall's concise history of our planet. Helpfully organized in chronological order, this work synthesizes the best current thinking by scientists in an easily understood fashion regarding our geological past. The time charts at the beginning of each eon discription keep the reader oriented to the events relationships. The use and choice of charts & graphs prove helpful without being overdone. The author's detour into the techincal aspects of dating rocks and plate techtonics could be a bit boring to the general reader, but are situated in the text so that they can be skipped easily. The author brings you right up to the present day and delivers some thoughts as to how the cycles of the past may effect our future. I feel the author is very impartial when addressing "hotbutton" issues such as global warming, etc. There is also a helpful glossary in the back and suggestions for further reading for those whose appetite on this subject is wetted.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Popular Book on Earth History and Geology.......2005-12-23

Ok - as a geologist myself, I love to read books on geology even if they cover a lot of material I already know. But this book surprised me in being very thorough on earth history including many very recent scientific discoveries and developments that I have only seen in scientific journals. He does a very nice job of covering the breath of earth history without being overly technical for the lay person, but yet engrossing enough for the professional geologist. Hey even we cannot know everything in the geology world - thus the reason I read this.

MacDougall does a good job of providing the reader with both the rock history but also the history of life on earth, from the earliest bacterial forms through the amazing trilobites, dinosaurs and trees and grasses and such. He also does a good job of relating many of the geologic features around the US and the world to plate tectonics and the interplay of the environment that produces the rocks and features we see today

For those budding young rock hounds or the adult wanting to brush up on an area that you could use more info on, or perhaps a geologist who wants to brush up on their earth history, I whole-heartedly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars clear, comprehensive and concise.......2005-06-13

This book is not only a great way for the layman to get an understanding of the history of our planet, it's also a testament to the way science works. MacDougall writes clearly, avoids jargon, and doesn't hesitate to explain the reasoning behind statements about events in geological history. He doesn't leave loose ends nor does he make unsupported statements. He draws together different threads of evidence, allowing the reader to see how ideas come together to reinforce a statement about what happened millions or billions of years ago. He seems to anticipate questions a reader might ask and answers them. Far from a boring account, you could get excited not only about geology but about science in general from this book. I've read it twice and keep it on the shelf for future reference. Many drawings give clarity to the written account. There is no attempt to entertain the reader with gratuitous humor, so common in explanatory books these days. This isn't "for dummies" or "an idiot's guide." Instead, your intelligence, curiosity and scepticism are assumed. It isn't easy for creatures who live less than 100 years to grasp events that occur over millions of years but I found this book allowed me to conceptualize the earth's 4.5 billion year story in a very satisfying way.

5 out of 5 stars Well organized, well written! Heir to Carl Sagan?.......1999-01-30

My title above pretty much says it all! There is a good flow to the way one paragraph flows into another. I am a layman with an interest in the integrated "big systems" of science--how processes studied by several disciplines come together and attempt to explain how our planet works. This book does that to the point I may want to go on to more specialized, in-depth works. Chapter Ten, "Global Catastrophes" is the clearest account I have ever read of mass extinction theories. I had not realized that the now very famous K-T boundary event of 65 million years ago (the dinosaur killer) is the only extinction event uncovered in the last 600 million years where the "smoking gun" of extraterrestrial iridium can be found in enough abundence to point to a comet or asteroid impact. I had thought that there was evidence to show that there were incoming impactors every 26 million years or so and that this had caused other mass extinctions including the biggest one at the Permian-Triassic boundary some 250 million years ago. These other mass extinctions may very well have come about because of purely earth-bound processes such as plate tectonics and rising and falling sea levels. Fascinating stuff to say the least! Drawings and diagrams are well done and to the point also. I recommend MacDougall as heir apparent to the Late, Great Carl Sagan as a popularizer of the great realm of science! Enjoy!

          Book Description

Designed as a sequel to the authors' Introduction to Gauge Field Theory, Supersymmetric Gauge Field Theory and String Theory introduces first-year graduate students to supersymmetric theories, including supergravity and superstring theories. Starting with the necessary background in quantum field theory, the book covers the three key topics of high-energy physics. The emphasis is on practical calculations rather than abstract generalities or phenomenological results. Where possible, the authors show how to calculate, connecting the theoretical with the phenomenological. While the field continues to advance and grow, this book addresses the basic theory at the core and will likely remain relevant even if more advanced ideas change.

5 out of 5 stars A great introduction to supersymmetry and string theory.......2001-07-22

Bailin & Love is a really great book to begin learning supersymmetry from. I read this book while simultaneously reading the first few chapters of Wess & Bagger's susy and sugra text. Much of the detailed calculation and attention to details is missing in B&L and can be found in more sophisticated texts (such as Wess & Bagger and the Weinberg text). I found B&L a good place for wordy explanations which are sorely lacking in W&B. B&L also does a good job of connecting susy to phenomenology by introducing the minimally supersymmetric standard model. The susy in B&L is done in four-component notation to make it more familiar with QED and electroweak calculations. On top of this, all of the calculations are done with component fields; superfields are used only for organization. No formalism of supergraphs is used. Supergravity is also introduced, once again in a more wordy fashion than W&B. Apparently, much of the susy phenomenology is similar to the "Supersymmetry Primer" article by Stephen Martin....

String theory in Bailin & Love is done in a similar fashion as the susy: lots of words without the messy calculation. B&L don't bother with conformal field theory at all and use basically the "old covariant quantization". Once again though, B&L is a great thing to be reading as a companion to Green Schwarz Witten or as a companion to Polchinski.

In the end, Bailin & Love is a great place to begin learning about supersymmetry and string theory. I read it after a year of quantum field theory and found it very quick and easy to read. Bailin & Love does a good job of getting the reader in a good position to read the more advanced texts (Wess & Bagger, Weinberg for susy and GSW and Polchinski for strings). Unfortunately, there are many typos in the equations. Corrections can be found at the author's page ...

3 out of 5 stars Intersting observations for the hard physics.......1998-12-18

I really enjoyed the observations of professor Bailin about gauge theory, which is quite useful in the field of submoleculer physics and wave theory. However, his writing is quite scientific, which is to be expected in this type of field, but if particle physics floats your boat, then this would be a good book to buy.

          Book Description

The Legend of the Holy Drinker" tells the haunting story of a dissolute vagrant who is uplifted for a short time by a series of miracles. Written in the final days of Roth's life, it is a novella of sparkling lucidity and humanity. "Fallmerayer the Stationmaster" and "The Bust of the Emperor" are Roth's most acclaimed works of shorter fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Solid and moving European prose of another era.......2006-06-04

The translations of Roth's stories offered in this slim volume are all the more extraordinary in that they allow the reader to walk next to the stories' narrators as they describe their settings and characters. Whether it is the simple peasants who don't comprehend the end of an empire in their sleepy little village, a clochard with a debt, or a simple stationmaster who longs for love and life, Roth holds these simple characters up as icons of a time and world that struggles with the progress of politics, morals, and perspectives. I recommend these stories for the beauty of the language and the beauty of Roth's gift of storytelling.
