Customer Reviews:
Excellent best-of compendium........2006-02-17
This book is a collection of many of the best of the Dilbert Strips, organized according to subject matter. If you don't have all of the previous Dilbert collections, this is a very good way to get many of the best of the previous strips all in one book. But even if you DO have all the previous books, it's not without value to have so many of the best strips all in one book, so conveniently organized. Granted there's no new material here, which some might consider a flaw worth docking the book at least a star for, but as reprint collections go, it's a fabulous collection.
Very funny stuff.......2005-05-02
Dilbert knows office humor and this book is a compilation, by topic, of some of Adams' best work over a 10 year period. I love Dilbert, so this book is a lot of fun.
However, I will warn you - having the strips arranged by topic takes some of the humor out of it - a whole section of strips dedicated to "Secretaries" for instance, is not nearly as funny as just seeing an occasional barb. Can you imagine Seinfeld doing his comedy routine by subject? "Ok, here are all my jokes about women", now onto "cookies" - no, it just doesn't work as well. I prefer the straight timeline accumulations. And you will find yourself rereading strips you have seen in other Dilbert books too.
But overall, a fine collection - I still think it's great - it just could be better.
Great compilation for the casual fan.......2004-03-21
I'm not a Dilbert fanatic, but I sure have been getting a kick out of the strip lately and decided to break down and buy my first hardbound Scott Adams. Many of these made me laugh out loud. It's a good book to have around when you need a laugh about work. The way the book is broken down into categories. Great layout. The hardbound edition has the graphics printed on the cover itself, in addition to the dust jacket. (How many hardbounds do this??? Must be more expensive). When the dust jacket gets crummy, the book will still look great. Highly recommended to those still in the 'rat race'.
DILBERT GIVES YOU THE LAUGHS!.......2002-11-22
This is a Dilbert treasury. It only contains comix from the first 13 Dilbert books. Nothing new here.
How they're organized, however, is different. This comic book is split into two sections: Jobs, & Job Impediments.
Here's a list of the Jobs:
-bosses
-budgeting & acoounting
-consulting
-engineers
-entrepreneurs & venture capitalists
-finiancial advisor
-HR
-information services
-interns & co-ops
-ISO 9000 & 14000
-lawyers
-marketing
-procurement
-programmers
-project management
-quality assurance
-retail & service jobs
-safety
-sales
-secretaries
-security
-strategy & planning
-tech support
-technical writing
-temps & contract employees
-training
That covers just about everything but janitor
Now for the job impediments:
-annoying co-workers
-business language
-cubicles
-gender relations
-incentives
-meeting or presentations
-mergers
-performance reviews
-policies
-reorginizations
-teamwork
-telecommuting
-travel
(if you haven't noticed, they're in alphabetical order)
Now, even though I'm not an office worker, I have a good idea of what to do with this book. First, you have to keep it somewhere safe. If you don't, it can get stolen & kinda defeat the purpose. When someone with one of these jobs annoys you, come to your book. Read a few pages about his/her job. Next time you see them, you can laugh at them cruelly/really hard at them for reasons otherwise unknown.Of course, if someone has done this at anytime to YOU, well, now you know.
You must get this book. Buy it. Now. No, really. Now.
Don't Point That At Me.......2002-11-14
Normally, most comic strip books are compilations of the strips for a specific period of time. And Dilbert certainly has several of those. But this time around, Scott Adams has created a decade long compilation.
Instead of presenting the strips in chronological order, which is normally the way it's done, Scott Adams has broken this book into 39 categories contained in two sections. Some of the categories include "Bosses," "Safety," "Lawyers," and "Marketing" to just name a few. And each category contains daily and/or Sunday strips from 1990 - 1999 that pertain to the category.
In addition to the way the book is broken down, it is interesting to see the strip from different years. It wasn't until about 1995 that the characters in the strip evolved into what we see today. Before that, Dilbert had a much longer face, Alice did not have the poofy hair, and the pointy-haired boss wasn't quite so pointy-haired.

An in-depth look at strategies and techniques of five of the country's best money managers
In
Five Key Lessons from Top Money Managers, Scott Kays taps into the investment knowledge of five of the nation's foremost money managers-Bill Nygren, Andy Stephens, Christopher Davis, Bill Fries, and John Calamos. Through extensive interviews with these investment experts, Kays found five principles that are common to all of them. This book discusses each of these five principles in detail-and gives readers specific tools to implement what they've learned by developing a step-by-step process that incorporates all five principles. Kays even teaches readers how to screen for companies that meet the criteria for quality businesses and then analyze three of the qualifying firms to determine if they sell above or below their fair market value.

Trying to Learn from the Successful.......2007-01-02
I am a devout Index Fund fan, but I always try and keep an open mind and examine active management approaches as well.
The author's approach for this book was to interview 5 managers who have beaten the S&P 500. He then identified common approaches from these 5 managers, which can be boiled down into a recommended process for individual investors.
This style reminds me of a series of 4 books written by John Train across the 70's, 80's, and early 90's (The Money Masters, the New Money Masters, Dance of the Money Bees, and the Craft of Investing). John Train did this same kind of analysis of master investors to try to learn their secrets of success.
The author boiled the methodologies of his 5 current day master investors into the following 5 steps:
1. Invest instead of speculate
2. Develop a very defined investment philosophy
3. Follow a detailed, repeatable process every time you analyze a security
4. Limit your investment selections to quality companies
5. Buy stock only when it is selling at or below fair market value
The author then goes on to give a couple of specific examples of how to apply this 5 step methodology.
The one issue I have with this approach is step #5 above. It sounds relatively easy to examine a company's historical financial performance, estimate how it will do the next 10 years, and then discount future earnings back to its intrinsic value......or stock price today. If the current market price is 60% or less than the company's intrinsic value, it is undervalued and you should buy it. Basically Benjamin Graham's method of buying companies for less than half of what they are worth, then selling when they reach full value.
I did this approach on a few companies several years ago. What I found out discouraged me from using the calculated intrinsic value approach. I found that the slightest change in inputs (estimates of how the company will perform in the future)......had a dramatic impact on the intrinsic value stock price. I decided that intrinsic value calculations are more art than science at that point.......which probably explains why very few people (except Warren Buffett or Charlie Munger) can accurately identify the intrinsic value of a company.
I don't think I have the time or talent to accurately identify intrinsic values......and therefore am happy to achieve market returns using Index Funds. If you think you do have this talent, and you think you can beat the market indexes every year, more power to you. The value approach of finding companies that you can buy for 50 or 60 cents on the dollar is probably less risky than other stock market investing methodologies.
If you are interested in this approach, I would highly recommend you read John Train's Money Masters book........and the updated New Money Masters book. Also go to the library and retrieve the August 1, 1977 Forbes story titled Ben Graham's Last Will and Testament. It goes into mathematical detail how to screen companies for potential additions to your portfolio.
I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including:
The Richest Man in Babylon
Bogle on Mutual Funds: New Perspectives for the Intelligent Investor
The Millionaire Next Door

Practical and easy-to-read........2005-07-30
Most investment books explain theory without giving you a way to apply it. After reading this book, I not only understand the buy/sell philosophies of the managers interviewed, but I also know where I fit on the spectrum of investing (I think Christopher Davis is my closest match) and how to apply my knowledge. The system of filters set up in the second half of the book offers a way to combine theoretical knowledge and individual investment needs with a solid system of finding stocks. If you've read other investment books and don't have a system for applying what you've learned, this book is for you!
This book is something else you don't always find in the business sector: an enjoyable read that both entertains and informs. For the experienced investor, it offers a chance to pick the brains of the most successful managers in the country. All the managers explain their strategies for purchasing and selling stocks, as well as how they treat timing and value.
Just a note: another reviewer mentioned one of the keys, "invest only when the stock price is below fair value," as being obvious. It is. But what is not so obvious--and something all the managers seemed to take very seriously--is how to determine the "fair" price of the stock based on more than simple P/E ratios. The book gives an actual formula for valuing stocks--it doesn't just stop with the concept.
Very helpful!
Great Book for the Novice as Well As the Experienced Investor.......2005-07-29
Don't we all want to know what makes someone a success in their profession? Kays has brought together 5 of the country's top money managers and has unlocked the tried and true strategies that have made them a consistent success in the mutual fund industry.
This book will help the novice investor create a solid investment philosophy built upon unchanging fundamentals. As well, the experienced investor will be reminded that having a consistent investment philosophy is the key to long term success.
A look into each of the 5 money manager's backgrounds made for an unique and interesting read.
All can benefit from this book.
I personally have benefited from the advice in this book! .......2005-07-23
I really loved the interesting stories about the five money manages that Kays' interviewed. Not only do you find out the common traits of all these successful fund managers, more important, Scott writes about how to actually find a stock using his valuation model, giving the reader the secrets to successful stock picking. "Finding the Blue Light Specials" was my favorite chapter and already I've found stocks that are undervalued, making the information in this chapter alone worth the price of the book many times over.
Anecdotes are nice, "advice" is so-so (2.5 stars).......2005-07-16
In a very "general" book, the author profiles some of the better known fund managers. The book cover and title suggest that some significant information regarding these managers' trading style is discussed. Nope. The author waits until Chapter 8 to even list what the 5 key lessons are. Two of the lessons is "invest, do not speculate", and "invest only when the stock price is below fair price value (WOW!)". That should give you an idea of the "key" lessons. If you are researching this book for investment ideas, better luck elsewhere. On a positive note, the book offers a very good introductory discussion on present and future value of money and discounted cash flow model. Anecdotes of the managers when they were as young as 8 years old which molded their investment philosophy (isnt that very believable?) is an interesting read. Wont lose much if this book is skipped. If you are an absolute beginner, the book certainly has some merits and is worth a second look.

Book Description
Some 250 million years ago, the earth suffered the greatest biological crisis in its history. Around 95% of all living species died out--a global catastrophe far greater than the dinosaurs' demise 65 million years ago. How this happened remains a mystery. But there are many competing theories. Some blame huge volcanic eruptions that covered an area as large as the continental United States; others argue for sudden changes in ocean levels and chemistry, including burps of methane gas; and still others cite the impact of an extraterrestrial object, similar to what caused the dinosaurs' extinction.
Extinction is a paleontological mystery story. Here, the world's foremost authority on the subject provides a fascinating overview of the evidence for and against a whole host of hypotheses concerning this cataclysmic event that unfolded at the end of the Permian.
After setting the scene, Erwin introduces the suite of possible perpetrators and the types of evidence paleontologists seek. He then unveils the actual evidence--moving from China, where much of the best evidence is found; to a look at extinction in the oceans; to the extraordinary fossil animals of the Karoo Desert of South Africa. Erwin reviews the evidence for each of the hypotheses before presenting his own view of what happened.
Although full recovery took tens of millions of years, this most massive of mass extinctions was a powerful creative force, setting the stage for the development of the world as we know it today.
Customer Reviews:
Very informative overview of the Permian Mass Extinction .......2007-10-08
I found this book very easy to read. Mr. Erwin has a sort of sense of humor he adds to the book to take away from any text book monotony you may be afraid of. He is also extremely in depth and explains with seemingly little bias the many proposed possible causes and evidence (or lack of) for this mass extinction. There are also many diagrams and graphs to illustrate much of the pertenant information. I won't get too in depth with the contents, I will just say if you have any interest in the Permian, or any other prehistoric event, I suggest you read it.
Interesting topic, expert writer, frustrating book.......2007-03-23
I wish I could give this book three or four stars. Erwin is an expert in the area of the Permian extinction, and when he tries, he can write well. Unfortunately, he does not seem to try often. There are just too many sentences here that need to be read two or three times before their meaning becomes clear. The meaning of many of the graphics never become clear! And at the end of each chapter, I was unclear about what I had learned, and what I could expect next.
I finally gave up half way through the book. At that point, I was as confused about the Permian extinction as I was at the beginning, and I cannot even say I was confused at a higher level.
Perspective on Global Warming.......2007-02-22
A geologist's view of global warming puts things in perspective. The sky may or may not be falling, but it's happened before.
Splendid agnosticism.......2006-11-23
In Kentucky, there's a museum with a lifesize model of a dinosaur with a saddle on it. This is a hymn in fiberglass to young Earth creationism, the idea that the Universe was created about 6,000 years ago.
It costs $1,500 to become a charter member (family rate) of this museum. A much better investment would be $24.95 for Douglas Erwin's thriller about the Permian extinction.
More than nine-tenths of all species died out 251 million years ago. Erwin, a researcher with the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History and the Santa Fe Institute, finds the end-Permian "enigma far more compelling than the end of the dinosaurs," a relatively minor event from 65 million years ago.
For an event that Kentuckians think never happened, the end-Permian event left a lot of debris, of which the most interesting is in China. Until 20 years ago, the paleontological record there was unknown to the outside world.
What the evidence is telling us is difficult to say. Erwin says "Extinction" was "frankly written as a mystery story." In this one, the clever detective does not wrap up all the loose ends on the last page.
Instead, we learn that there are at least seven major theories of what might have happened. These range from a big meteorite to gigantic volcanic eruptions in Siberia to a climatic or biological or geological change that drove oxygen out of the oceans.
The first chapters set the stage. Life was very different in the Permian. There were reefs in warm oceans, and they contained corals, but the corals were only distantly related to those of today and they were not as important as crinoids and lampshells, animals that still exist in out-of-the-way places.
On land, flowering plants had not yet evolved, nor mammals, dinosaurs or saddles. In South Africa's Karoo basin, fossils remain of a fabulous, lost fauna.
There were widespread extinctions on land as well as in the sea during the end-Permian event, but it is hard to say whether the land extinction was as complete as in the sea, where 94 percent of species disappeared in a short time. Erwin's team and their Chinese collaborators have found evidence that it all happened in less than 160,000 years -- maybe a lot less.
It is also not proved that the big land extinction exactly coincided with the sea kill, but it seems likely. The land kill was a whopper, too. This was apparently the only time in history when a mass extinction had any real impact on insects.
Whatever the cause, it did set up the modern world. "Mass extinction is a powerful creative force," says Erwin.
Or did it? As they learn more and more of the details, scientists are also learning to question the easy assumptions of more innocent decades.
Evolutionary biologists are vigorously debating whether the animals and plants that dominated the Permian were already being outcompeted by the early forerunners of modern flora and fauna, or whether they would have maintained their control of resources.
Erwin, splendidly agnostic about this and other debates, lays out the questions but leaves the resolution for some other time. Perhaps not too far in the future. He notes that his 1993 book on the Permian extinction already is out of date in many ways.
In fact, after decades researching the extinction itself, he has now concluded that "understanding the recovery from the extinction poses a far greater intellectual challenge."
Some self-aggrandizing here..........2006-10-18
It is always gratifying to see popular books about science get rave reviews because we scientists benefit from public enthusiasm about what we do. Erwin has a chatty and disarming style that is a joy to read. Unfortunately, it is a public disservice to distort reality as Erwin has done in this book. In depicting his role in the whodunit, Erwin has liberally embellished his own contributions and those of his colleagues. After proclaiming for years that the extinction was unrelated to the Siberian volcanism, this book now implies that such a relationship was his idea. The whitewashing treatment of his team's blunder in misdating the extinction and related events is worthy of the most guileful politician explaining away some scandalous act.
As long as you don't mind the plethora of factual errors and self-promotional aspects, it is a fine book. Unfortunately, it will not weather history well.

How Science Works in Totatitarian Society.......2007-08-14
I recommend this book get a sample of what science is like in a totalitarian society. I grew up in the USSR, and I visited IKI in the middle of 1980s as a lead engineer from a lab that developed waveguide systems for IKI. Everything was secret and KGB guards were everywhere, but we were able to carry out documents and materials for waveguide systems in our pockets. Sagdeev's account of events is quite interesting since he can tell how things were in the USSR without being afraid for his life and well-being any more. I wish he talked more about the scientific side rather than politics.
Science at the other side of the iron curtain........1998-05-05
We are used to read about science in Europe or America, but this book refers to the knowledge of science in Rusia. How it affects to the politics and how the policts involve in science matters. Very easy to read. It goes from the beginning of the century to the Star War. Personal anectotes of the author with famous russian physicists.
The autobiography of one of the finest people on the planet........1995-12-30
Now that the madness of Star Wars *seems* be to behind us,
check out this book. If you thought Regan and E.T. were
nuts, wait til you read about the opposition. History is
gracious-she provides sane leaders at insane moments. Just
about everyone on the planet owes this gentleman big time.
He writes beautifully. The history of Eastern bloc physics
is not well known in the west-this book is the perfect place
to start. One of the sanest, most decent men on the
planet.

A Politicianýs Primer.......2001-04-28
The "Selected Writings and Speeches of Abraham Lincoln" is an anthology of speeches, letters and telegrams that he wrote from his reputed first political speech in March of 1832 to his last public address on April 11, 1865 just four days before his death. Over the thirty-three years of writing, we are able to see the Great Emancipator's writings change.
Lincoln had one of the toughest presidencies to date. He ran for office when the Union was at odds, and would soon see his country divided just before he became president. His stands on slavery took a back seat to reuniting the Union. As time went on, you can see in his writings how his job of bringing a country back together, and peace to the land, wore on him. Lincoln was obviously physically and mentally tired by the close of the war.
Editor T. Harry Williams provides a great introduction that covers the course of Lincoln's career and the special issues he had to face during that time. He also begins each of the seventy-six pieces of Lincoln's work with a short note that gives enough information as to the context and history of the writing. Of the writings, I found the response to Senator Douglas (1854) very interesting and intriguing as well as his communiqués with his generals during the war. Of course, this anthology also contains the Gettysburg Address and his inaugural addresses.
Lincoln was a powerful writer that focused on the issues that the public was concerned about. His writings were almost poetical, and, at times, full of passion. There is no doubt from reading his speeches and letters that Lincoln loved his country. This man could say more in a ten-minute speech than today's politicians can say during a whole term. The speechwriters of today should revisit the speeches of this great writer.
