The item you get is decorative at best. Doesn't have any kind of a gong sound at all. I suppose thats what it was met for but still...

The book it comes with is funny.

    Book Description

Examining the experience of the U.S.-Mexico remittances corridor over the last eight years, this title derives specific lessons that could be applicable to other remittance corridors when shifting from informal to formal systems.

Lessons focuses on a few selected aspects of the remittance experience and breaks down the remittance process into three stages:

    * the First Mile, when decisions are in the hands of the remittance sender;
    * the Intermediary Stage, comprising the systems that facilitate the cross-border transfer of funds, and;
    * the Last Mile, where the funds reach the hands of the remittance recipient.

By analyzing the objectives, obstacles, incentives, and changes occurring at each of these stages in the U.S.-Mexico corridor, lessons are drawn for other remittance sending and receiving countries that seek to encourage formalization of the flows.

    Book Description

Nobody knows law schools better than The Princeton Review.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO MAKE A CRUCIAL DECISION

The law school you choose determines how you’ll spend the next three years of your life and greatly influences how well you will do in the job market after graduation. The Complete Book of Law Schools gives you the lowdown on all ABA- and CBA-accredited schools in the United States and Canada. It also provides the answers to all the practical questions you should ask about every law school to which you consider applying, such as:

-What are the average GPA and LSAT scores of admitted students?
    -What is the student/faculty ratio?
-What is the job placement rate for graduates?
-How generous is each law school’s financial aid package?

Plus the basics, like snail mail and email addresses, telephone numbers, admissions deadlines, tuition, and more.

You’ll also find tips on what makes a bold personal statement, insight into the mysterious admissions index, pros and cons of the different kinds of law school loans, and an admissions timeline that will keep you ahead of the game and (relatively) stress-free.

4 out of 5 stars Great Statistical Guide.......2000-12-08

This book doesn't tell you the whole story behind each law school, but it gives valuable statistics to help you figure out where to apply. The preliminary chapters and the appendices also have some useful information.

4 out of 5 stars The Absolute Law School Bible.......2000-07-06

If you want objective reviews of law schools (but only the ABA-approved law schools), this book is the ultimate Bible to them. In my opinion, in your search for a law school, you need to have this book as a reference. It describes the specialties of different schools, and the grid comparing your chances of admission against your LSAT and GPA is priceless. However, many top-ranked schools do not provide that information, so if you're hoping to determine your chances at Harvard or Columbia, guess again. You'll just have to apply to find out! It's also useful in that it provides e-mail addresses, snail mail addresses, phone numbers and websites for all of the schools. That is a handy way to request catalogs and other information.

3 out of 5 stars Good background info.......2000-05-15

This was the first book I bought when I decided to apply to law school. It's a good book if you're looking for general information on a variety of law schools, but don't expect any student comments like you might see in some other books (i.e., Princeton Review's guide to the best law schools). All of the information is purely factual and is supplied by the law schools themselves. The best part of the book is the little chart where you can match up your LSAT score and GPA and find out how many people in your corresponding category were accepted or denied at a particular school. Unfortunately, many of the top law schools refuse to include such info, which tends to be very annoying. Other than that, I'd say it's a great beginners' guide for those interested in applying to law school.

4 out of 5 stars Get this book for the admission indices!.......1998-08-23

Though this book will not give you the same crucial, informal advice that guides written by students will, it offers invaluable information about your chances of getting into law school. Most of the law schools in this book have included admission indices, which is a cross-referenced chart that details which students get in and which do not. By using your LSAT score and your cumulative gpa, you can tell how many people with your credentials applied to a certain law school, and how many of them got in (such as, 2/13 --2 out of 13 applicants-- or 39/39).

        Book Description

This scholarly text provides an introduction to the numerical methods used to model partial differential equations governing wave-like and weakly dissipative flows. The focus of the book is on fundamental methods and standard fluid dynamical problems such as tracer transport, the shallow-water equations and the Euler equations. The emphasis is on methods appropriate for applications in atmospheric and oceanic science, but these same methods are also well-suited for the simulation of wave-like flows in many other scientific and engineering disciplines.

The text discusses finite-difference, spectral, finite-element and finite-volume methods. Also included are additional chapters on semi-Lagrangian schemes, non-reflecting boundary conditions and methods for the efficient solution of problems that include physically insignificant rapidly propagating waves.

Throughout the book the author has followed a middle ground between the theorem-proof formalism of a pure mathematics text and the highly empirical approach found in some engineering publications. Although there are no formal proofs, the essential characteristics of the various schemes are mathematically derived in a style familiar to physical scientists. Numerical examples illustrating the theoretically derived properties of the various methods are presented throughout the book to establish a concrete link between theory and practice. Both theoretical and applied problems are provided at the end of each chapter.

Numerical Methods for Wave Equations in Geophysical Fluid Dynamics will be useful as a senior undergraduate and graduate text and as a reference for those teaching or using numerical methods, particularly for those concentrating on fluid dynamics.

Dale R. Durran is a professor at the University of Washington, Seattle. He has a doctorate in meteorology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a master's in mathematics from UC Berkeley. From the reviews: "...The book's unquestionable advantage is the clarity and simplicity in presenting virtually all basic ideas and methods of numerical analysis currently actively used in geophysical fluid dynamics." -Physics of Atmosphere and Ocean "...an excellent reference...should be brought to the attention of readers in meteorology, oceanography, physics, mechanics and engineering... an excellent text book...the extensiveness, theoretical and practical extent this book reaches make it a classical work." -Acta Meteorologica Sinica

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars A great textbook!.......2000-03-15

In this introductory text space is equally divided into traditional methods (finite difference and spectral) and more modern methods (finite volume and semi-Lagrangian) for solving GFD-related PDEs. The book also contains chapters on filtering of physically insignificant fast waves and on open boundary conditions. Arguably these subjects can be learned by studying a collection of specialty books, but very seldom one finds even-handed treatment of all major techniques in a single book like this. More important, the breadth in scope does not come at the cost of depth or conciseness in presentation. Rather, the book achieves a delightful balance between breadth and depth, as well as between theory and practice. Not only is it an important successer to the long-respected Haltiner and Williams (1984), but it is much more readable.

I used the book to teach a graduate course on numerical methods at the University of Chicago. I could not cover the entire book in a 10-week quarter, but was able to cover chapters 2,3,4 and 5. The clearly written text was very helpful in organizing the class material.

The problems sets at the end of each chapter are also well designed, albeit mostly theoretical. It would be helpful to have separate programming assignments based on these problems, so students can learn how to apply principles into practice.

                Book Description

Text extracted from opening pages of book: CONCERNING THE NATURE OF THINGS Six Lectures delivered at the Royal Institution By SIR WILLIAM BRAGG K. B. E., D. Sc., F. R. S LONDON G. BELL AND SONS LTD. * 19* 5 RO IN GRFAF BKITAIN BY KD CLAY & SONS, LIMIJED, BUNC. AY, SUFFOLK. PREFACE IT was my endeavour at the Christmas Lectures given at the Royal Institution in 1923-24 to describe certain features of the recent discoveries in physical science. Many of the facts that have come to light might well be the subject of Lectures adapted to a Juvenile Auditory/' and would be at the same time interesting and helpful ; interesting because they display a beautiful order in the fundamental arrangement of Nature, and helpful because they have given us light on many old questions, and will surely help us with many that are new. I was aware of two special diffi culties. The first was the difficulty of under standing the minuteness of the scale on which the action and properties of the atoms must be repre sented ; but, after all, this was only a difficulty due to unfamiliarity, and would come to a timely end. The other was the difficulty of grasping arrangements in space. There are some who think that this difficulty is incurable, and that it is due to the want of some special capacity, which only a few possess. I am persuaded that this is not the vi PREFACE case : we should have nearly as much difficulty in grasping events in two dimensions as in three were it not that we can so easily illustrate our two dimensional thoughts by pencil and paper. If one can turn over a model in one's hand, an idea can be seized in a mere fraction of the time that is required to read about it, and a still smaller fraction of the time that is required to prepare the description. Perhaps some of the readers of this book will be sufficiently interested to make models of the few crystal structures that are mentioned in it, and may even go on to other structures that are described in larger books or in original papers. I have added somewhat to the lectures as originally given. The additions are intended to make the treatment of the subject a little more complete : they were not very suitable for con sideration at the lectures, but are perhaps per missible in the book because the reader can omit them if he desires or read them more than once, or consider them with a model in his hand. At the end of the book there is a short note on the making of models. Book Description

The determination of the whole was soon made. Huspah, the superior but superannuated chief, tottering in advance, and singing mournfully the song of death with which the Indian always prepares for its approach, the song became general with the victims, and with drawn knives and ready hatchets, they threw wide the entrance, and rushing forth with a fury duly heightened by the utter hopelessness of escape, they struck desperately on all sides among the hundreds by whom they were beleaguered. But they had been waited and prepared for, and forbearing to strike in return, and freely risking their own lives, the Indians were content to bear them down by the force of numbers.

5 out of 5 stars Quite an exciting book.......2003-07-21

This book was published first in 1835 but as 19th century novels go I found it fairly well-done, and holding my interest. There is a lot of melodrama, and the Indians are portrayed with some balance. There are some racist-like views, and a silly scene where Hector, a slave, begs his good master not to set him free. But the account is fast-moving and event follows rapidly on event. The scene is 1715 in South Carolina, and involves an Indian insurrection which actually happened, tho it is pretty hard to find much about it in history sources. Some of the speeches put in the mouths of characters in the extremely stressful situations in which they find themselves are not without humor to today's reader. It is said this is the best of Simms' novels, and knowing that makes me think some of his other novels might be fun to read--this one is.
