Wanna be a fireman? An astronaut? A playwright? An evangelist? Then buy this book, it will tell you how! You get the idea. This short volume is best suited for the curious career seeker (ages 8 and up), not the serious professional interested in examining the possibilities. I have no idea who wrote the other reviews, but I wonder if they were paid!

As a life coach for Renaissance Souls (people with too many interests to choose just one,) I don't know how many times I've heard the question, "But what do I say in the interview, when it's so clear I've never done X before?" I was so tickled when I came to the part of the book where Stein addresses just this concern, providing practical and reassuring answers. This collection of article excerpts and editor comments is a good casual read, but it has enough substance to make a worthwhile introduction to Philosophy of Law. D'Amato's preference for Natural Law & Justice theory shines through a bit, but he seems to provide enough material for every position to make a case for themselves.

Cyanide Compounds in Biology Chairman: E. E. Conn 1988 This book provides an international, multidisciplinary approach to the biology and biological chemistry of cyanide and related compounds. It contains contributions by chemists, biochemists, biotechnologists, biologists, toxicologists and physicians. The topics discussed at the symposium fall into four groups. The first consists of three papers on the microbial metabolism of HCN and organic nitrile compounds. Knowledge of this subject has expanded significantly in recent years. The second group of papers deals with cyanogenesis in higher plants. Recent biosynthetic studies, the compartmentalization and metabolism of cyanogenic glycosides, studies of the simultaneous production of ethylene and HCN, and the molecular biology of cyanogenesis are reviewed. The third part of the meeting covered the role of cyanogenic glycosides as defence compounds used both by animals and by plants. A review of qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis of cyanogenic glycosides is included because of the need to know the kind and amount of cyanogen involved in plant—herbivore relations and in insect—predator interactions. The fourth group of papers discusses the detoxification of HCN by animals. The role of sulphur in HCN detoxification by sulphur transferases is described; the practical subject of treatment of HCN poisoning is reviewed; and, finally, some nutritional consequences of metabolic interactions between cyanide, sulphur and selenium are discussed. The practical implications of research in the field of cyanide in biology are clear. One hundred years ago Georg Popp became the first scientist to present in court a case where the geological makeup of soils was used to secure a criminal conviction. Subsequently there have been significant advances in the theory and practice of forensic geoscience: many of them subsequent to the seminal publication of ''Forensic Geology'' by Murray and Tedrow [Murray, R., Tedrow, J.C.F. 1975 (republished 1986). Forensic Geology: Earth Sciences and Criminal Investigation. Rutgers University Press, New York, 240 pp.]. Our review places historical development in the modern context of how the allied disciplines of geology (mineralogy, sedimentology, microscopy), geophysics, soil science, microbiology, anthropology and geomorphology have been used as tool to aid forensic (domestic, serious, terrorist and international) crime investigations. The latter half of this paper uses the concept of scales of investigation, from large-scale landforms through to microscopic particles as a method of categorising the large number of geoscience applications to criminal investigation. Forensic geoscience has traditionally used established non-forensic techniques: 100 years after Popp's seminal work, research into forensic geoscience is beginning to lead, as opposed to follow other scientific disciplines.

Typing errors.......2003-12-13

I have been reading the 1999 editions and I hoped that new editions have shown up. This book is very concise and clear. However, typing errors occur in ALMOST EVERY PAGE!! When it comes to something that I really do not understand, I have to place brute force in order to figure out if it is typing error or not.

Differential geometry, ralativity, and cosmology together........2000-06-22

This book deals with the physical justification of the mathematical framework involved in the modern and highly sophisticated theories of the structure of the universe.

The book seems to have been written for working physicists and mathematicians, and maybe for graduate students, but I think most of the material of the first 5 chapters could find a place in undergraduate curricula.

There are some other regarded texts treating this same subjects, but this one attempts to ensure that the mathematical description mirrors the physical concepts involved, so this approach also leads to a careful treatment of the structural aspects of mathematics.

The contents are: Local Theory of Space and Time; Analysis on Manifolds; Space and Time from a Global Point of View; Pseudo-Riemannian Manifolds; General Relativity; Robertson-Walker Cosmology; Spherical Symmetry; Causality; Singularity Theorems.

Includes an extensive list of references and a system of guidelines to read the book, because the author states that it is not meant to be read in the same order as it is written.

Very useful as a reference.
