Great book--Easy read, full of practical advice, and great examples. This book is much needed for any small business owner, but especially those who find themselves "spread too thin." Isn't that all of us?

5 out of 5 stars Great, concise help.......2007-07-03

Bottom line: It requires lots of work to be able to kick back and let your business run itself instead of run you.

But the author gives great guidance on what, when, and how to accomplish the ability to take time away from your business while it runs without you. Some paragraphs in this book could easily be expanded into chapters or even whole books. But a busy small business owner has no time for a whole book.

I ended the book feeling "I've got a lot of work to do" - but you probably will too after reading How to Succeed as a Small Business Owner... and Still Have a Life.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for any small business owner .......2007-04-18

I recently read Bill's book as part of the Ellensburg Downtown Association's Brown Bag Business Basics series, and this is clearly one of the best small business resources I could recommend to any small business owner.

The book is a deceptively easy read, and yes, as Bill freely admits, it's loaded with Clichés. But Bill is able to move past the clichés and get right to the meat of the issues leaving the reader with solid useable information to act on at the end of each chapter.

From the very basics of understanding why you're in business to begin with, to planning for your businesses succession this book is a tremendous resource for any small business owners and includes some of the best advice I've read on the hiring process and why it's so important to the success of an business.

Clearly one of the best books that we've shared with our downtown business owners here in Ellensburg.

5 out of 5 stars If you want to have a business AND a life, read this book..........2007-03-16

It's such a struggle to maintain balance when you're a small business owner. Bill Collier's book has practical, easy to read AND easy to apply advice that will help you "press the off button."

Bill walks the talk too: he plays golf once a week, DURING the week! He truly writes this book from expertise AND experience.

5 out of 5 stars This is the most practical small business book ever!.......2007-02-27

I'm an avid reader/researcher and now and entrepreneur so I have read LOTS of books on small business. This is the first book that I really felt "got it!" The writer clearly knows what it is like for a small business and has realistic tips and ideas for growing your business the right way and ending up where you want it to be.

The title initally appealed to me since running your own business can be so draining. This book was approachable, easy to read, and had actionable ideas from the beginning. I also like that it "got" the realities of being a small business owner and didn't take up your time with worthless "exercises" or visions of what your business plan should be like. After reading this book I was so inspired to create my own business plan and start working on business improvements laid out in the plan. The book helped me find the clarity I had really be lacking and it made me feel like it wouldn't be too difficult or onerous to do.

This book is a MUST for every small business owner who wants to see their business grow in a sustainable way!!! I can't recommend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2003-07-12

This book offers a fresh perspective on starting a running a business. While other small business books that I've read concentrate on growing a business to become a major corporation with venture capital, etc., I just want an alternative to my 9-5 job so I can spend some time with my kids and do some of the other things I enjoy. The author is talking directly to people like me. The book is well written without a lot of technical terminology. It includes lots of clear and easy-to-follow steps for setting up and running a lifestyle business.

Book Description

Practical advice for investors from investors
Presenting a fresh approach to investment guidance, Wealth of Experience is built on real investors' stories about what has worked-and what hasn't worked-for them during their personal investment journeys. The Vanguard Group, one of the world's most respected investment companies, asked hundreds of investors who have succeeded in accumulating real wealth to explain how they've gone about it. Their personal accounts make this a one-in-a-kind book with extraordinary insights on saving, investing, and managing money from "ordinary investors" for their peers. Wealth of Experience has straightforward, battle-tested advice on investing for retirement, learning about finance, and managing money. The invaluable guidance from experienced fellow investors can help readers avoid major financial pitfalls and learn from mistakes others have made. Vanguard's research confirmed its long-held belief that individual investors-sometimes derided on Wall Street as unsophisticated-are a savvy and capable group. This book proves that their collective wisdom is as valuable as any "expert" advice.
The Vanguard Group (based in Valley Forge, PA) is the world's second-largest mutual fund company with 15 million shareholders and $600 billion in assets under management. Vanguard pioneered low-cost index mutual funds, and distinguished itself as a champion of superior client service and low investor costs. Andrew Clarke is a senior financial writer at The Vanguard Group. Before joining Vanguard, he worked for Morningstar, Inc., the investment research firm. Mr. Clarke is a Chartered Financial Analyst. Jack Brennan is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Vanguard Group. A graduate of Dartmouth College, Mr. Brennan received a master's degree in business administration from Harvard Business School.

4 out of 5 stars Good for beginners ..... to instill confidence.......2007-03-26

I read through the book quickly highlighting sections for my 30-ish children to read when I pass it to them in the next few weeks.

One must keep in mind that there is a bias towards index investing.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guidelines from Real Investors.......2005-12-28

I was pretty impressed with this book. I give it an A+.

As hard and complicated as Wall Street tries to make investing..... to make you think you need a broker or active mutual fund manager, the steps for successful investing are very basic. This book does hit all the basic steps correctly.

#1 is to live below your means so you can save at least 10% of your gross each year and invest it. This sounds easy, but it apparently is not since the average U.S. household credit card debt is now around $8,000 saving rates are below 1%, and average household net worth is below $100K. This book emphasizes savings and sums it up very simply by saying "If you don't save, you can't invest".

#2 is to use automatic investment so you pay yourself first. If you set up an automatic way of investing, then you can't spend money you don't see. After all, the U.S. government adopted automatic payroll deduction to pay income taxes right after WWII because it was concerned people would not save to pay their tax bill. The government using automatic payroll deduction to assure they always get their share of your money, so why not use this method to keep some of your money for yourself? If you use automatic investment, you get the advantages of dollar cost averaging as well. Many of the wealthy investors surveyed for this book recommended various forms of automatic savings including "Pay yourself first" and automatic payroll deduction.

#3 is to invest your savings in stocks and use low cost index funds for your investments. This book explains and recommends low cost index funds.

#4 is to focus on asset allocation, not which stocks or mutual funds to pick. This book does an excellent job of explaining asset allocation.

What I found most valuable about this book was the book's data came from surveys of real investors. I am always skeptical of national surveys about money. I do put a lot of faith into the survey results used in this book and the comments which came directly from investors.

I particularly enjoyed seeing the real asset allocation of investors. The book gives the actual asset allocation of the people surveyed including by age group and by amount of net worth. What was interesting to me was that most of these older and wealthy investors did not stray too far from the age-old 60:40 stock to bond allocation used forever by large pension funds.

All-in-all, a great book for learning from real investors and their experiences. I would suggest companion books to supplement this book including The Richest Man in Babylon, Bogle on Mutual Funds, The Millionaire Next Door, The 4 Pillars of Investing, A Random Walk Down Wall Street, Index Mutual Funds: How to Simplify Your Life and Beat the Pros, and the Coffeehouse Investor.

5 out of 5 stars Great advise for long term non-professional investors.......2005-11-29

Highly recommend this book to those who is just starting with investments and savings. I loved this book because of its easy to read and understand format for non-professional long term investors (most of us).

While I do not think I found totally new way of investing (which I did not need), the book reiterated and formalized my prior experiences and thoughts and put them into SIMPLE strategies to achieve several types of investment goals (I happen to agree with most of those).

If your investment skills are up to 5 out of 10, you will likely benefit from reading this book.

4 out of 5 stars GET RICH SLOW - Wisdom And Advice From Successful Investors.......2003-07-26

This book represents truth in advertising, it is exactly what the title and the book jacket claim it to be. The Vanguard Group, the world's second largest mutual fund company, conducted a detailed survey of six hundred of it's clients who had been successful enough investors to amass substantial wealth. From this survey it filtered and organized the information and insights which these investors provided into a comprehensive overview of how investors can maximize the probability of achieving their goals. While some readers may view this book as overly simple, it is in no way simplistic and in effect reinforces the importance of attributes of investment success that are often overlooked because of their apparent obviousness. It is an evcellent complement to the previous books published by Vanguard which were written by the current Chairman John Brennan and the previous chairman and often quoted champion of indexing, Jack Bogle.

In the interest of full disclosure and for the perspective of the readers of this review, I am an investment consultant and retired co-managing partner of an investment firm concentrating on the equity markets. Investing was my hobby early in life and I was fortunate enough after I changed careers to be successful doing something which I loved. I am also a long time Vanguard client utilizing their expertise in areas where my knowledge is limited, their low cost structure allows me to obtain excellent asset diversification in such areas as municipal bonds and Ginnie Mae securities. Finally, I am preparing to author a book on investments which I hope will appeal to I was interested in whether the lessons which the Vanguard respondents emphasized coincided with my beliefs.

This book is organized thematically, beginning with the importance of saving and developing investment goals and a plan to meet those goals. It then proceeds to a discussion of the importance of diversifcation, how to select your investments and how (and how often) to measure your progress and when it may be necessary to alter your course. It also discusses at length in a fair and balanced way the importance of low costs (a Vanguard advantage) and how to think about taxes. It briefly presents some thoughts on estate planning, not just for your heirs but as a broader legacy for future generations. And it concludes by summarizing "The Eight Commandments" for investment success and providing a useful glossary of the investment terms referenced in the book.

The structure and logical progression of the book make it exceedingly easy to read. Each chapter contains a discussion of the subject matter, often with explanatory charts or tables. There are usually quite extensive and interesting quotes from the participants in the survey, and then a concise summary provided by one of Vanguard's investment professionals. As a self taught individual investor, I was not surprised that I agreed with a lot of the advice (which in some cases goes against sophisticated Wall Street wisdom) and had shared a lot of the experiences included in the book. It emphasizes the basics heavily, especially the need to be patient and let the long term trend of the market and the power of compounding be your friend. And while such elements of investing as the necessity for diversifcation and the need to balance risk and reward seem obvious, they were lessons that even such successful investors as these often had to relearn after the extended bull market of the 1990's.

There are three aspects of this book about which I want to caution readers. First, as I have already mentioned, don't mistake it's simplicity for lack of acumen. However, it may be too elementary for those individuals with a lot of investment experience. E.g., it contains no specifics about choosing individual investments. Second, it attempts to help new investors learn from the mistakes of others, but does recognize that some of our most meaningful lessons inevitably come from our own mistakes. Thus, given the advanced average age of these investors, the lessons of this book may be difficult for young readers to internalize. Third and by far most important, while this is very useful advice, it doesn't reflect the full spectrum of methods and alternatives available to in order to become a successful individual investor. (As I and many others have done.) It stresses the factors which are important to Vanguard clients: low costs, index funds, broad asset class diversification and the usage of mutual funds as a core investment vehicle. These are all very valuable messages, but as the book specifically acknowledges they are just part of a broad range of alternatives that allow an individual investment success. Thus, the most important lesson of this book is clearly the importance of an investor's self evaluation: one's abilities, temperament, time priorities, risk tolerance, self confidence and ability and interest in continual self education. For me, investing is about continual learning, there is always some new and potentially profitable product, service or retailing technique; in addition, everything in the political economy impacts the markets. For others, such topics may be a collossal waste of time best left to the professionals. Reading this book should help you decide where you fit into that spectrum.

      Book Description

Science has development from a self-evident public good to being highly valued in other contexts for different reasons: strengthening the economic competitiveness and, especially in high-tech fields, as a financial investment for future gains. This has been accompanied by a shift from public to private funding with intellectual property rights gaining importance. But in contemporary democracies citizens have also begun to voice their concerns about science and technology related risks, demanding greater participation in decision-making and in the setting of research priorities. The book examines the legal issues and responses vis-à-vis these transformations of the nature of public science. It discusses their normative content as well as the inherent limitations of the law in meeting these challenges.

This lavishly illustrated book reveals Egypt's spectacular wilderness areas with their varied wildlife and habitats and their sparse human populations, through over 300 stunning color photographs and paintings, together with explanatory text describing the natural and cultural landscapes. Many of the photographs show the great variety of creatures found throughout Egypt, from the teeming fish and invertebrates in the Red Sea to the less numerous but equally fascinating animals that inhabit the inhospitable sands of the Western Desert. Also revealed are the indigenous people of the various areas and their distinct cultures. From the Bisharin who have inhabited southeastern Egypt since Neolithic times to the Arab Bedouin, each of the main ethnic groups is represented with photographs and a brief text. The book also provides a view of Egypt's twenty-four protected areas and the unrelenting efforts being made by the Egyptian government to conserve the country's natural and cultural heritage.

4 out of 5 stars Good general or introductory book.......2005-08-23

Very well organized and presented. Covers the basics very well with easy to understand terminology. It lacks extensive detail regarding the topics covered....but I think that's the point.

          5 out of 5 stars A Choice Of Disasters.......2002-12-23

Furious Earth by Ellen J. Prager [with help from Stanley Williams (Surviving Galeras), Kate Hutton (one of SoCals TV seismologists and the author of the earthquake updates on the TriNet earthquake website), and Costas Synolakis] is a well-written introduction to earthquakes, volcanoes, and tsunamis. This book appears to be aimed at junior high/high school aged readers, but adult readers who have no background in these subjects will also enjoy the book. An earlier reviewer suggested that the book has the coverage of the better chapters of an earth science textbook, but I wish high school earth science texts were this well-written. I enjoyed reading the book despite the depth of my background and appreciate the refresher course that Furious Earth gave me. My only complaint concerns the ordering of the color plates at the center of the volume. The pictures are out of order to their mention in the text and the only thing that comes to mind is that they were ordered the way they were to make them fit on a limited number of plate pages. Furious Earth belongs on the shelves in as many elementary and secondary school libraries as possible and would be a wonderful gift for a budding earth scientist.

          5 out of 5 stars Furious Earth-.......2000-09-19

I am a sixth grade teacher and was given this book at a science conference. After just beginning to read it, I immediatly went online to see how much the book cost- I want to order one for each for my students! It will be a bit hard and I will have to do some serious directing, but the book is an excellent example of a clear, scientific, organized, up-to-date, and interesting (yes- interesting enough for 30 sixth graders) nonfiction book in the field of earth science. Furious Earth combines "PBS-like" research discussions and theory- (Plate Techtonics Discovered, Paleotsunamis...) with "RealTV-like" examples (Italy, 79 A.D.: Vesuvuis; The World's Largest and Smallest Quakes). The book is a surprisingly suspenseful, fascinating, and easy read (for us unscientific folk). The 16 color pages of graphs and pictures also add to the subject. I can't wait to see their eyes grow when I read to them Chapter 2- Earthquakes. It starts off with the 1994 Northridge, CA quake... It hooked me at least...

          3 out of 5 stars non-technicle, intro earth-science book.......2000-09-16

very basic, simple geological concepts and explanations involving volcanology, ocanography, geophysics, etc. anybody can read this interesting book about the processes of the earth, and how humans have attempted to understand it. it is basicaly the more interesting chapters in any college-level Geology 101 course. up to date, very easy to read.
