Leans too heavily on third-party anecdotes........2006-12-27

This book is larded heavily with third-party anecdotes of people on their own career paths which are supposed to be inspirational or teach the reader something. Unfortunately, I found these stories taught me little since they had little relevance to my own situation. How could they? Everybody's life is different. For example, in the section on how first jobs can be disappointing, which is supposed to cheer us up, we read about how the "friend who worked as an aide on Capitol Hill for a senator had to wear business suits". Gasp! Then we read about how "Another friend took a job in human resources but was asked to fill in for the company receptionist to answer the main phone lines during lunch hour"! Oh no! The shame! The fact is, these stories are so out of touch with the reality of many people's first jobs, at a time when many college grads end up flipping burgers or cleaning washrooms, when blue collar jobs are being lost to automation and immigrants, and white collar jobs are being outsourced, it's laughable. Since everybody's experiences are different, anecdotes don't teach much of any value anyway, and especially not pie-in-the-sky anecdotes like are found in this book. Perhaps some readers will find the stories encouraging but they will leave the rest of us cold.

I found this book to be extremely informative, not to mention witty and entertaining. It is beneficial for those who are just starting their career and also people (like myself) who have been in the work force for several years and are wondering where to go next. I highly recommend it.

I really enjoyed this book! It was a wonderful journey full of real people and real job/life situations. I highly recommend this book to everyone just out of college or looking to change/re-evaluate their career.

This book was awesome. It has practical, great advice, written in a conversational style that makes it easy to read. These are the things no one ever teaches you but you REALLY need to know - and it comes from the voice of someone OUR age who has been there, not some condescending "adult." (Wait - are we adults?) But seriously, I am buying this book for every new college grad. I highly recommend it.

A must for new grads.......2003-08-03

We all go to college with the assumption that we will do great things. Unfortunately, college doesn't prepare folks for what is actually going on in the "real world" nearly as well as a recent grads first 5 weeks on the job.

Yes...I did... friendly, comforting, informative... I felt as if it answered the REAL questions I had about starting my career. The personal stories were engaging, and I particularly appreciated the tips on the day to day workings of the business world. There's little of practical value here for your ordinary run of the mill "millionaire next door", apart from advising the reader to find a trustworthy wealth management professional.

If you are interested in setting up off shore trusts or life insurance companies, there may be some useful information for you here. This book is intended for the richest of the rich and wealth management professionals.

This textbook introduces the molecular physics and quantum chemistry needed to understand the physical properties of molecules and their chemical bonds. It follows the authors' earlier textbook "The Physics of Atoms and Quanta" and presents both experimental and theoretical fundamentals for students in physics and physical and theoretical chemistry. The new edition treats new developments in areas such as high-resolution two-photon spectroscopy, ultrashort pulse spectroscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy. Particular emphasis is laid on the optical investigation of single molecules in condensed phase. Hannibal has always been the most famous member of the Barcid dynasty, which dominated Cathage and its empire in Africa and Spain in the latter half of the third century BC. However, Dexter Hoyos' revealing study makes it clear that Carthaginian success was founded on the military and political skills of more than one member of this remarkable family.

It was Hannibal's father, Hamilcar Barca, who relaunched Carthage as an imperial power after disastrous wars; Hamilcar's son-in-law Hasdrubal further developed the new imperium in the face of Roman suspicion and opportunism. Only then was Carthage's historical zenith reached by Hannibal and his two remarkable brothers in the war with Rome from 218-201 BC.

Blueprint of the Barcid ascendency to power.......2004-11-30

This book is an excellent source for anyone who wishes to learn more about the Barca family and the dynamics of its relationship to Carthage during the first two Punic Wars. Hoyos takes all of the primary sources still available today dealing with the Punic Wars (Polybios, Cassius Dio, Livy, etc.) and pieces together the most plausible explanation for how and why the first two Punic Wars occured. Perhaps the most important section of the book deals with Hamilcar and Hasdrubal's relationship with Carthage. Hoyos suggests that Carthage was divided into two camps (both of which desired to dominate Carthaginian politics), the Barcas and the followers of Hanno 'the Great'. This factional infighting goes a long was to explaining why, during the first and second Punic Wars, Carthage took such long periods of inaction towards Rome. Also, as stated earlier, since Hoyos takes all surviving primary sources concerning the first two Punic Wars he is able to give the most plausible narrative of the events. This is especially important because many of the primary sources contradict one another in their narratives. Naval sizes, dates of battles and other events are often confused or misrepresented in the primary sources. So what Hoyos does is to present the reader with all of the accounts and argues in favor for what he has decieded to be as the most plausible account of the wars. Even if the reader does not agree with Hoyos' interpretation, since he has laid out the evidence used to come to those conclusions, the reader is able to use the same evidence to come to one's own conclusions.
In short, this is an extremly valueable secondary source that can be quite helpfull to anyone interested in the history of the first two Punic Wars.
