5 out of 5 stars Top Notch- Simple- Easy to Implement.......2007-03-26

If you are looking for a simple system that doesn't require you to copy lists, type everything into your computer or become a slave to your PDA, then this book is certainly for you. I'm amazed that more people aren't familiar with this work and I'm lucky to have found it years ago. This book has helped me turn my paper mountains into organized and prioritized accomplishments. It helped me throw out the junk, keep the best items, and develop a system that keeps me organized and accomplishing more. This is a must read for anyone who wants to avoid the fancy books on time management.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS A SLEEPER TIME MANAGEMENT BOOK.......2006-10-28

This book is the best book on Time Management and priority setting ever written. I read this book about 12 years ago it helped me organize my day and set priorities on the important versus the urgent.
For example - you put a "1" next to all the items on your to do list that equal the important to your career/success/well-being/etc. The you put a "2" or "3" on the others that are less important. Then you go back over all the "1's" and put a 1,2 or 3 based upon the time it takes to do it. For example - something that should take a short time a "3"; a long time to do - a "1" . Then your "to do" list looks like "1-1" long time to do very important; a "1-3" is a short time to do, but very important; And you do all the 1-1's and 1-2's and 1-3's first before the 2-1's and 2-2's ... get it? Like if pick up laundry would be a "3-1" - it is not important but takes a long time to do (if you are working) and therefore not going to make it to the head of the list. It forces you to think and prioritize and DO THE THINGS THAT COUNT. And you keep a MASTER LIST where write everything .... UNBELIEVABLE!! A SHORT BOOK - and it tells you volumes!!! and it works!!

5 out of 5 stars Must read for the Unorganized.......2004-04-25

The truth is that many of the quick fix techiniques and tips that are given to the many unorganized people as I used to be don't work well for long. I was on a quest to find out how to become organized my self and be part of the select few who seem to be born that way. By following what this books says I have been able to do it. See, many of the things that are believed to help aren't very effective, such as writing down things to do on an agenda that has times written down--doesn't work because its easy to be interrupted and not finish something on the alotted time etc. etc, but these are the foundations of personal organization. I have observed that these also happen to be the things that real organized people actually do. Now they might seem simple, but these book truly brings all the aspects of personal organization together--the three pillars as i like to call them, which with one missing, the other two fall in despair and chaos once again. Master List, Master filing system, and a clean work area--sound simple, it is, but trust me, read the book. Easy read, and well worth your time if you're disorganized--true testimonial form me, I can't stress it enough. My word.

4 out of 5 stars weLEAD Book Review by the Editor of leadingtoday.org.......2004-02-17

Occasionally a book comes along that is short, a pleasure to read and truly helpful. If You Haven't Got the Time to Do It Right, When Will You Find the Time To Do It Over is such a book. Mayer has spent much of his career as a time management consultant and he has written a basic primer for those interested in organizing their lives to a greater degree.

Most of us are being required to do more work with fewer people. How to get this increased workload accomplished is a common problem. Mayer asks, "But are we really increasing our productivity, or just the number of hours we work?" He then offers a solution. The key to getting work done is not simply to work harder and longer but smarter! Better organization is a solution. This book is centered on the principle of "save time by wasting less of it!" The author uses his vast experience to offer ideas, techniques, and concepts to save time and use it more effectively.

If You Haven't Got the Time to Do It Right, When Will You Find the Time To Do It Over provides common sense ideas that really work if we are willing to apply them. Being creatures of habit we tend to do things because that is the way they have typically been done. Mayer has boldly stepped out of the habitual routine to find ways to overcome daily obstacles to time and productivity. He attempts to show how time can be saved in "small pieces" rather than in large blocks. He ponders, "Save thirty seconds every five minutes, and by the end of the day, you've saved an hour." The book is divided into two parts. The first part shows you how to organize your workspace including your office, files management and desk. The second part shows you how to streamline your entire business to become more productive and organized.

This is a useful and rewarding book. If it helps you to change only one routine in your life due to its beneficial ideas it will have served a valuable purpose. Easy to read and understand from cover to cover!

5 out of 5 stars I first read this book in 1993 and still use it today........2001-08-10

Unfortunately, I later handed it off to a coworker who was struggling with organization. It's definitely a "read it once" type of book. My disorganized boss continuously comments on my organizational skills, so I've decided to pick up a copy for her as well as another coworker and replace my own.

    Book Description

In an efficient market, all stocks should be valued at a price that is consistent with available information. But as financial expert Vijay Singal, Ph.D., CFA, points out, there are circumstances under which certain stocks sell at a price higher or lower than the right price. In Beyond the Random Walk, Singal discusses ten such anomalous prices and shows how investors might--or might not--be able to exploit these situations for profit. The author distills several decades of academic research into a focused discussion of market anomalies that is both accessible and useful to people with varied backgrounds. Past empirical evidence is supplemented with author's own research using more recent data. Anomalies covered include the "December Effect," "Momentum in Industry Stocks," "SandP 500 Index Changes," "Trading by Insiders," and "Merger Arbitrage." In each chapter, the author describes the particular anomaly, explains how it occurs, shows ways to take advantage of the anomaly, and highlights the risks involved. We learn, for example, that shares of stocks that have appreciated in recent months become scarce in late December, because investors wait until January before they sell (to postpone payment of taxes on profits). This scarcity drives the price up--the "December Effect"--and smart buyers can make the equivalent of 75% annual return on a five-day investment. Each chapter includes suggestions for further reading as well as tables and graphs that support the discussion. The book concludes with a preview of many other interesting anomalies and a section on how investor behavior might influence prices. Clearly written and informative, this well-researched volume is a must read for investors, traders, market specialists, and students of financial markets.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars academic AND accessible.......2006-01-11

I'm impressed with what a good job Vijay Singal has done. Beyond the Random Walk is very clear and thorough, turning what is normally overly academic research/text into easy to follow prose and investor-friendly instructions. I'm reading a library copy now, but want to have my own copy--a rarity for me.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent invesment.......2005-06-11

Vijay has written a very lucid account of different pricing anomalies and how to take advantage of them. His section on momentum-trading strategies was particulary interesting to me. Sector-fund momentum trading strategies have been shown to beat the market averages ( Hulbert's Financial Digest has reviewed sector fund newletters and thinks there's statistical evidence of superiority in their total returns versus an unmanaged index). It's well worth considering as an investor if you're willing to invest a little time. I've based a website on this approach, topsectors.com, so I'm quite convinced it's a strategy that hasn't been fully exploited today and so pricing anomalies exist that the average investor can use to their advantage.

5 out of 5 stars A really useful book for practitioners.......2004-11-14

I am a (successful) practitioner who has been exploiting mispricings in the market for more than 10 years - in bad times and good times.

This is an excellent book - readable, comprehensive, and up to date. It is not a fool's book but the ideal book for an intelligent person. It describes the risks associated with each strategy. I particularly like the strategy with Fidelity Select Funds.

I hope the book becomes popular so that it can be reissued every few years with new insights and new data.

    5 out of 5 stars Well-written, convincing....if you are a trader..........2004-07-29

This is definetly one of the better written books on the subject. Singal presents several "market anomalies" and discusses strategies as to how to benefit from them. However, most of them have holding periods of a couple of days to a few weeks at the most. A long-term investor may not find the strategies mentioned here very useful. Of particular appeal to mid-to-long term investors may be the discussion on SP500 additions and deletions, and mutual fund pricing. It may offer some tips on when to committ additional funds to mutual funds. However, the increased pressure on market timers and related activities, increasing redemption fees, trading costs, tax implications and the sheer amount of time required to monitor the strategies, the techniques of the author provide for good academic discussion and not as much as practical "tips". Nevertheless, the market situations, suggested techniques, evidence and possible explanations, citations are well presented and logically organized. A must-read for traders and investors alike, though for different reasons.

2 out of 5 stars Beyond the random walk, the path is rocky........2004-06-03

This is a very interesting and clearly written book. From an academic standpoint, it effectively digs some dent in the Efficient Market Hypothesis. The author addresses ten classic situations, some of them well known, when markets are not efficient.

However, the author does not make a convincing case that retail investors can exploit these inefficiencies efficiently. In other words, the anomalies the author depicts amount to separate trading strategies which should potentially help you achieve the "buy low - sell high" optimum. However, these trading strategies are associated with much higher transaction costs and taxes than a buy-and-hold strategy of an index fund. Additionally, some of these strategies are very labor intensive and information intensive. These are added costs. Finally, these strategies will cause you to cash out of the market frequently. The holding of cash balances will further reduce your return compared to investors who remain fully invested.

When all is said and done, will you come out ahead exploiting these market anomalies after you factor all added costs? The author stated that he "generally" does come out ahead of the market. However, he does not support this vague statement with any documentation. Also, he adds that going forward his strategies may be less effective because of ever changing market conditions. Thus, once a market anomaly is exploited by a few investors, the market's ever evolving efficiency erases this anomaly.

Although the book is very interesting, it is no substitute to sound investment strategies based on the Efficient Market Hypothesis. It is a far safer and easier to profit from the market's overall efficiency than to attempt to profit from its few and fleeting marginal inefficiencies.

If you are interested in this subject, I strongly recommend the classics by Burton Malkiel: "A Random Walk Down Wall Street" and "The Random Guide to Investing." I also strongly recommend John Paulos excellent "A Mathematician Plays the Stock Market." These books all suggest that you are better off focusing your energy on proper asset class diversification that reflects your risk tolerance. And, in turn invest for the long term through index funds of these respective asset classes.

        Book Description

Genome science as a discipline is less than five years old, but has already spawned a revolution in the way in which genetics is taught in universities, approached by academic researchers, and applied by pharmaceutical and agricultural research companies. While over a dozen new journals devoted to genomics have appeared in the last few years, no introductory textbook that covers the range of disciplines incorporated into genome science has materialized, until now. A Primer of Genome Science bridges the gap between standard genetics textbooks and highly specialized, technical, and advanced treatments of the subdisciplines. It provides an affordable and up-to-date introduction to the field that is suited to advanced undergraduate or early graduate courses. Bioinformatic principles and experimental strategies are explained side-by-side with the experimental methods, establishing a framework that allows teachers to explore topics and the literature at their own pace.

The Primer is organized into six chapters. Each chapter includes: exercises that can be worked by students using the internet and freely available software for analysis of genomic data; discussion questions; a summary; and suggestions for further reading. An Appendix includes a glossary of terms, with a brief review of key genetic concepts.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Up to Date and Very Well Done.......2005-08-11

With the basic science being so new and changing so rapidly, this second edition is timely and welcome. Virtually every chapter has been re-written to bring it up to date. The result is a text suitable for use in upper under grad or beginning grad level course in functional genomics or bioinformatics. The six chapter headings are:

        Genome Projects: Organization and Objectives
        Genome Sequencing and Annotation
        SNPs and Variation
        Gene Expression and the Transcriptome
        Proteomics and Functional Genomics
        Integrative Genomics.

The book is well written and profusely illustrated with color drawings and photographs. The book is closely allied with the web in form of accessable databases and the like which may keep it from going out of date so fast.

With most text books being so expensive, this book is a definite sleeper in the field.

3 out of 5 stars Poorly Written, Good graphics.......2004-01-09

The book is very poorly written and is too difficult to follow to be called a "primer." Authors often focus on actual software tools and how to use them rather than the science behind them.

To be fair, the graphics offered in the book are excellent and sometimes are the only way to understand a difficult concept.

The preface says to be familiar with "the content of a typical 300 level undergraduate course in genetics" -- it should be a definite prerequisite for reading this book.

5 out of 5 stars The future may view this text as a foundation for GS.......2003-05-15

Every technician and/or PI should own a copy of this text for their lab. With the logical diagrams and full explanation of the text, this book is really condensed and assumes some knowledge of molecular biology. This book does not assume knowledge of genomics, but rather serves as a manual.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of Functional and Structural Genomics.......2002-03-20

This somewhat understated book may be overlooked based on its title, and yet it represents the best book currently in print to provide a solid overview of the science and issues in genome science, functional and structural genomics, and the subdiscipline proteomics. Chapter 1 describes current progress with mapping genomes, including the human genome and other genomes in plants and animals. Chapter 2 describes sequencing approaches and gene identification. Chapter 3 deals with gene expression and technologies. Chapter 4 focuses on proteomics including brief introductions to 2D-PAGE and mass spectrometry. This chapter also briefly introduces the reader to structural genomics, or the prediction of protein structure based on sequence through threading and modeling. After a chapter on single nucletide polymorphisms and genotyping the book concludes with a chapter on integrating genome studies including the use of in silico approaches.
Although scant in detail in parts, a major strength of the book is the wide coverage given to science of genomics and its offshoots. Overall an excellent course text for undergraduate or early postgraduate students or others interested in these emerging disciplines. I am not aware of any competing texts which such coverage and certainly not at the price of this one.

            Book Description

Oxygen has had extraordinary effects on life. Three hundred million years ago, in Carboniferous times, dragonflies grew as big as seagulls, with wingspans of nearly a metre. Researchers claim they could have flown only if the air had contained more oxygen than today - probably as much as 35 per cent. Giant spiders, tree-ferns, marine rock formations and fossil charcoals all tell the same story. High oxygen levels may also explain the global firestorm that contributed to the demise of the dinosaurs after the asteroid impact. The strange and profound effects that oxygen has had on the evolution of life pose a riddle, which this book sets out to answer. Oxygen is a toxic gas. Divers breathing pure oxygen at depth suffer from convulsions and lung injury. Fruit flies raised at twice normal atmospheric levels of oxygen live half as long as their siblings. Reactive forms of oxygen, known as free radicals, are thought to cause ageing in people. Yet if atmospheric oxygen reached 35 per cent in the Carboniferous, why did it promote exuberant growth, instead of rapid ageing and death? Oxygen takes the reader on an enthralling journey, as gripping as a thriller, as it unravels the unexpected ways in which oxygen spurred the evolution of life and death. The book explains far more than the size of ancient insects: it shows how oxygen underpins the origin of biological complexity, the birth of photosynthesis, the sudden evolution of animals, the need for two sexes, the accelerated ageing of cloned animals like Dolly the sheep, and the surprisingly long lives of bats and birds. Drawing on this grand evolutionary canvas, Oxygen offers fresh perspectives on our own lives and deaths, explaining modern killer diseases, why we age, and what we can do about it. Advancing revelatory new ideas, following chains of evidence, the book ranges through many disciplines, from environmental sciences to molecular medicine. The result is a captivating vision of contemporary science and a humane synthesis of our place in nature. This remarkable book will redefine the way we think about the world.

5 out of 5 stars The best book of it kind?.......2007-08-06

This is the only really good book I've read about the evolution, history and chemistry of life. It's especially good when it is least philosophical. As when pondering over the likely order of ways to handle elemental oxygen - as it (or it's relatives peroxide or superoxide) most probably had to be handlet even before it was produced by plants. - And here are no tiresome stories about geologists having to travel around. It's on topic and well written.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book by Lane.......2007-05-12

Although not quite as pulled together as "Power, Sex, Suicide", this is a wonderful account of modern biochemistry. There are fresh ideas on nearly every page and his writing is amazingly clear. I realized halfway through that there are very few diagrams in the text, yet I felt like I didn't need any; a rarity for any science book.

It may be a little tough going if you haven't had some chemistry/biology background, but it seems like it would be accessible to most readers with a undergrad science background.

5 out of 5 stars Excellence in science writing.......2007-01-16

This is an outstanding book I recommend to anyone interested in undestanding how modern science is advancing its world view. The book connects seemingly disparate topics ranging from the origin of life, ageing and other day-to-day concerns with one another via the web of evolution. A relaxing yet illuminating read

            5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-12-25

I am an organic chemist, and as such have a deep and intimate knowledge of the subject. I can honestly say that this is one of the best written science books out there. Nick Lane is a wonderful writer for an academic. The book is well researched and engaging.

If you are interested in the evolution of life and the beginnings of our planet, you should read this book.

                      Book Description

This book expounds three special kinds of matrices that are of physical interest, centering on physical examples. Stochastic matrices describe dynamical systems of many different types, involving (or not) phenomena like transience, dissipation, ergodicity, nonequilibrium, and hypersensitivity to initial conditions. The main characteristic is growth by agglomeration, as in glass formation. Circulants are the building blocks of elementary Fourier analysis and provide a natural gateway to quantum mechanics and noncommutative geometry. Bell polynomials offer closed expressions for many formulas concerning Lie algebra invariants, differential geometry and real gases, and their matrices are instrumental in the study of chaotic mappings.
