Book Description
Intuition @ Work is full of James Wanless's tried and true wisdom on how to wring success from life at all levels. Using the workplace as his main focus, he reveals the inner workings of intuition and how it can be utilized to create an authentic life by first "feeling the feeling." Businesspeople must look to the future, be innovative, make difficult decisions in uncertain conditions, be adroit at handling relationships, and keep moving with action and energy under the pressure of performance - all qualities that intuition feeds. Wanless introduces techniques he's developed: symbolic picture taking strategic story telling creative walking deliberate dreaming truth humming intellectual loafing Intuitive fitness is ours when we follow these practices daily. Wanless shows how intuition can improve careers and relationships, and make decisions that ring true to intention. The book is punctuated with quotes from thinkers like Einstein, Paul Gauguin, Helen Keller, Walt Disney, and Emily Dickinson, among many others.
Customer Reviews:
Don't Wait for a Cricket.......2002-05-16
If I correctly understand Wanless' core ideas in this book, intuition is always "@ work." The challenge is to access it, nourish it, and be guided by it...usually in combination with one or more other resources such as emotional intelligence which Daniel Goleman discusses so brilliantly in Emotional Intelligence, Working With Emotional Intelligence, and most recently published Primal Leadership, co-authored with Annie McKee and Richard E. Boyatzis.
How to describe Wanless' book? First of all, extensive research (his and others') has convinced him that intuition may well be the single most important, and potentially the most valuable, of all resources available to human beings as they struggle to understand themselves and the world in which they live and work. For most of us, we prefer to rely on our powers of reasoning, our personal experiences, and the judgment of others to make decisions, to assign value, and to select goals to pursue. As a result, we can sometimes deny or ignore what Wanless characterizes as a "life force" within each of us and thereby forfeit "extraordinary, perhaps even revolutionary, ways of comprehending ourselves." I am reminded of the key point Ernest Becker makes in Denial of Death: Although no one can deny physical death, there is another death which we can deny. That is the death which occurs when we become wholly preoccupied with fulfilling others' expectations of us. Wanless asserts (and I agree) that trusting one's intuition can help us to identify and then fulfill what we expect of ourselves.
This book also provides a wealth of carefully selected quotations from various sources which are strategically placed within chapters which examine the potential "rewards" of intuition; what Wanless calls "the intuitive imperative"; intuitive decision-making, action, intention, vision, innovation, communication, fitness, and energy; and finally, "The Intuitive Future Life: A New Way of Being." Obviously, the purpose of including the quotations is to reassure the reader that, for many of the most thoughtful and influential persons, intuition is given great value. Among all the hundreds of quotations, my personal favorites include:
"There is something within you that knows more than you know." (Rochelle Myers)
"If I didn't define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people's fantasies for me and eaten alive." (Audre Lorde)
"A great many think they are thinking, when they are merely rearranging their prejudices." (William James)
"We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are." (Anais Nin)
"I shut my eyes in order to see." (Paul Gauguin)
This is a book which increases in value each time it is re-read. Although it has direct and practical relevance to the workplace, it can also help its reader (if receptive) to use the power of intuition to guide, nourish, and enrich her or his personal life. Wanless includes several hundred specific suggestions, drills, insights, and reassurances which -- collectively -- reveal and inform the potential power of intuition. The adjective "potential" is crucial to realizing the responsibility each person must assume. Wanless seems absolutely convinced that each and every reader can fulfill what is for most of us a latent and under-developed but nonetheless immensely promising source of wisdom and (yes) strength.

shrewd christian.......2007-01-10
I am still reading this book. So far I've really enjoyed it. Lots of good info and challenges. If you want to change your perspective on money and wealth, this is the book for you.
Good principles, mediocre writing, wrong tone........2006-05-29
The principles in Atkinson's book are sound, and definitely will help you get finances in order. But only if you can get through the rest of the stuff to get to them. I found the "catchy" formulas (TD+KoRR=L and others) laborious and hard to remember. The tone was perhaps too informal, and felt somewhat condescending to me. (At one point, Atkinson calls his reader "boophead." Boophead?)
There are many good nuggets in this book, and it's worth a perusal if your library has a copy. For a handbook to revolutionize your finances, however, I'd look elsewhere.
A must read!.......2006-03-17
This is a truly great book. I bought it on a whim at a used bookstore and my financial life has become better because of it. I am not Christian but bought it because I love finance books (I have my own bookkeeping business). The concepts that are written about are applicable to everyone, and speak of the importance of building a happy and satisfying life by building good personal relationships and productive activities. Unlike most personal finance books it doesn't feel you should have budget which is where most people have failure issues. I would absolutely suggest this book to anyone and feel it will pay for itself with the first day or two.
This Book Is Amazing!.......2004-06-14
This book has saved me from making a huge mistake! I was about to go out and take a second job to get myslef out of debt, but using the principles in Neil's book, I have already found (saved) hundred's of dollars that I didn't know I was losing every single week! I estimate that I will keep (for that debt payoff) an extra $5,200.00-$7,800.00 this year alone! And, best of all, this is without spending one extra minute outside my home and away from my children! Thank God for this book! Buy it, read it, share it!
Shrewd for the right reasons.......2004-03-21
Never would I have expected when The Shrewd Christian was recommended for immediate read that it would be such an engaging, "entertaining", encouraging and enlightening book about--of all things, finances!! I rarely read anything in one sitting, but Neil Atkinson kept my attention--through his own story, through a writing style that almost jumped off the page, through his knowledge as well as his passion for his subject. I'm excited about a book which focuses on helping the Christian middle class (plus anyone who elects to read this informative threatise) attain financial freedom--not so we can "have" more but so that we might "be" more about what matters--"kingdom work and relationships". Although I'm not sure if my husband and I can "live well on less than half of the money we make", Neil and his wife Margie's goal, I was certainly challenged to look at how we do live. Thankfully Neil didn't just challenge me, he also gave many, many helpful and practical ways to become "truly wealthy". Bravo to NA and Waterbrook for bringing a radically passionate financial prospective to my attention.
Product Description
Market Power Handbook: Competition Law and Economic Foundations is a comprehensive review of the wide range of legal and economics issues that arise in relation to the core antitrust concept of market power.
The Handbook begins with an introduction to the role that market power plays in cases brought under the principal antitrust statutes, followed by a discussion of the fundamental economic doctrines relevant to market power analysis. Succeeding chapters describe the role market power plays in the context of market definition and analysis and address the measurement and interpretation of market share and market concentration. The Handbook concludes with a discussion of structural characteristics of markets (such as barriers to entry) that affect the ability to attain or exercise market power.
This volume includes extensive discussions of such related issues as the determination of whether market power exists in narrow product markets (often referred to as "submarkets"), the use of market power screens, "lock in" as a source of market power, the analysis of market power in "network" markets, and the evaluation of essential facilities claims.
The ability to evaluate whether a firm or group of firms has or could obtain market power is a necessary skill for all antitrust practitioners. Market Power Handbook is your essential resource for conducting the needed market power analysis.

Customer Reviews:
Chemical Fate and Transport.......2005-01-09
Overall I would say this is a well written and useful text. I used this text for a Graduate Level Civil Engineering class while working on my Masters. This is a good introductory text for understanding the basic concepts of advective and fickian transport of contaminants of concern. The concepts presented can be applied to pretty much any chemical. The text covers basic concepts, chemical distribution of phases, mechanisms responsible for physical transport, air-water exchange modeling, Redox reactions, dissolved oxygen modeling, determining partitioning coefficients among phases, transport within the subsurface enviornmental and processess within the atmosphere. I found that the section on Bio Accumlation Factor (BAF), Bio Concentration Factor (BCF), and determining the increasing concentration within each trophic level within the food chain of the system to be weak. Each chapter within the text is full of problem sets but there is no solution guide which would be helpful. I would recommend this text, however, I would also supplement certain sections with additional reading as required.
Chemical Fate and Transport in the Environment.......2003-03-21
While there is no doubt that the author is highly proficient in the subject matter the book was a difficult read. Terms and theories were explained clearly however this is not an introductory level chemistry book. This book is written for chemical or environmental engineering students. Illustrations and tables are also inserted at points where you are engrossed in some pretty heady material so it gave the impression of jumping around. I say this b/c illustrations and tables had a lot of information included. The formulas were high level mathematical computations that I found bewildering. I am not Einstein but I also have 10 years of in the trenches environmental chemistry and field management. There were excellent problems to work at the end of each chapter but the answers were not to be found in the book. I have no idea if I worked the problems correctly which defeats the point of working them in the first place. I would not recommend this book as a "beginner level" chemistry book. This is more appropriate for a graduate school level which may have been the intended audience. If you are looking for a book packed with theory and formulas then this is the book for you. I had expected a book that was a little more general in nature.
The Price is Right!.......2000-04-01
This is a reasonably priced textbook for advanced undergrad & grads studying the environmental sciences in Engineering, Hydrology, and Chemistry. Environmental consultants in the private sector could also employ this textbook as a reference. Harry Hemond (of MIT) and Liz Fechner-Levy (consultant in Bethesda, MD) deliver a quantitative treatment of processes. Battle-tested at MIT for many years, this volume features time-saving exercises at the end of each chapter and an accompanying solutions manual.

A LITTLE BELOW PAR.......2003-05-18
One of the current fads in fiction is to take a painting by some Dutch master of some nameless woman and write a book about that woman's relationship with the artist. For example, The Girl with the Pearl Earring. That was successful, so then you see dozens of the same ilk. In the late 18th century and early 19th centuries, with the publication of the Arabian Nights in translation, writers became involved in the new fad of setting their tales in the Arab world. Voltaire was not immune to it, as is evidenced with Zadig.
Much as science fiction writers sometimes mask the satire of our world in technological allegory, so Voltaire uses the setting of ancient Babylon to critique French society and beyond that, the customs of all of Europe. Zadig is young nobleman who falls into all kinds of troubles as he tries to make his way through life. He's a nice guy that doesn't deserve such troubles. For example, when his fiance is being kidnapped, he is struck by an arrow and the doctor says he won't live. When Zadig does survive, the doctor is angry at him because he survived! Then his fiance dumps him. Zadig will have to fight against treacherous kings, mages, women, thieves, actually just about everyone in the world turns against him.
The second work contained in this volume is L'Ingenu (The Child of Nature). In Volataire's time, and even in our time, Native Americans are romanticized as being closer to Nature. They didn't litter, they didnt destroy environments, etc. They were at one with the land. A lot of that is hokey. But in L'Ingenu we encounter this stereotype in the form of The Child of Nature, supposedly an Huron Indian visiting the high society of France. He ends up being the long lost nephew of the very French Abbe he is visiting. Of course, as soon as the Abbe learns this he tries to convert him to Christianity. What ensues is similar to Zadig. The Child of Nature most overcome all the lies and deceptions of the modern world in order to find his happiness.
I have to say that after reading 3 works by Voltaire, I'm not that impressed. To me, Candide was no big whoop. These two works bookend that famous work and inform it to some extent. Zadig seems to have been a warmup pitch for Candide and is equal in art to that work. In fact I would say they were interchangeable. If you've read one, you don't have to read the other. L'Ingenu on the other hand seems to go a little deeper. It criticizes the Church quite violently and actually dispenses with the comedy by its end. I've read many comedies funnier than this and tragedies more poignant. Don't come to this book expecting greatness.
Zadig:.......2000-04-14
Voltaire chooses an oriental tale as setting for an analysis of human traits and the influence of good and evil on human destiny. The essentialy good Zadig suffers setback after setback on his quest to reunite with his true love and after having almost lost all hope of finding happiness he suceeds in overcoming the evil and jealous medlings of the people around him and is able to lead a content and prosperous life. In essence the story shows how human destiny is undisputable and that the road to a fullfilled life is long and hard. "Zadig" is a nice example of 18th century French Enlightment, questioning old traditions and social structures in combination with showing new views on humanity and ideals.
