Straight Talk About Gays In The Workplace: Creating An Inclusive, Productive Environment For Everyone In Your Organization
ASIN: 1580084966 |
Book Description
Based on a groundbreaking two-year study of more than 300 gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender alumni from the University of Southern California, Lavender Road to Success is the first career guide written specifically for the gay community. Career planning expert Kirk Snyder reveals the truth about a wide variety of issues facing gay professionals, such as what it means to be gay in the workplace, why you will make more money when you are out of the closet at work, how defining your personal identity as a member of the gay community will help you achieve success, and how to find an employer that's your perfect match. Combining extensive research, effective exercises, and real-world case studies, Lavender Road to Success is a sensitive and practical guide to building a successful and enduring career.
Customer Reviews:
Kirk Snyder is a bright light in the GLBT business and career community..........2006-07-18
Kirk is a great colleague I'm fortunate to know. Lavender Road is a wonderful book. He dared to do this original study when very few had the courage to do so. The material is extremely helpful, no matter where you are in your career journey. You'll see yourself in these pages. His suggestions are sound and research-based, and, if followed, will help many increase their career satisfaction (and possibly their income too!).
Gay or straight with gay loved ones, you will gain much from reading this book! I would also encourage college career counselors and company leaders and managers to read this book to better understand what it's like for their GLBT colleagues, employees, managers, etc.
May be the best 15 dollars you'll ever spend.......2005-05-10
While gay men and lesbians have been "out" for awhile, some of us find that our careers are stalled and that in point of fact there may be a "pink ceiling" through which few of us are allowed to pass, like the rich men through the camel's eye in the Bible. Even graduation from a good school like USC might not be enough in and of itself to help you, particularly with a newly resurgent homophobia rampant throughout America. The Lavender Road to Success may have an embarrassing title, but the money you pay for this may be the best 15 dollars you'll ever spend. And of course with Amazon it's only $12.17 or whatever.
Kirk Snyder's done a lot of research. Is there anyone he hasn't talked to? The anecdotes and life experiences of others are sometimes tedious, like being forced to watch hours of other people's home movies of their vacations, but Snyder brings these stories to life, and we feel that we are not alone in our struggles for validation and also, of course, for more money and success in the marketplace. Do you remember the old movie "Gypsy," with Rosalind Russell playing Mama Rose, and how she kept herself and her girls going by moving from town to town always seeking our former lodge brothers of her late husband? She'd give the "secret handshake" and she'd be in like Flynn. Snyder's program involves this kind of "secret brotherhood" but in addition he presages a sort of gay meritocracy where each rises on his (or her) own merits and on what we have that's unique to us which we can bring to the table. Even if you have your own successful career you might still be interested in this book (you could always develop noblesse oblige and give it as a Christmas gift to your less-succesful exes over whom you're triumphing at the moment). As Snyder reminds us, we meet the same people going up as we did going down.
Amazing and Powerful.......2004-01-02
This book greatly exceeded my expectations. I expected to get a career book with the usual (albeit) useful information, and instead found myself unable to put it down. Kirk Snyder gets his message across by introducing the reader to amazing gays and lesbians who have experienced all kinds of good and bad things in their careers and then translates it into great career advice. Reading this book is like meeting new friends who teach you all kinds of powerful lessons--and not just about how to do well in your career but in life. Gays and straights alike should read this book. If more straight people read books like this there would be less homophobia in the world.
Lavender Road To Success: The Career Guide for the Gay Commu.......2003-09-20
Amazingly fascinating and helpful book! As a career professional, I would recommend this book for all college and university libraries and career centers across the country! Kirk Snyder's book is also very beneficial for those in the work force who need insight and encouragement to select a work environment that is supportive, and that fits with your interests and values. Mr. Snyder's research results, personal stories, and career exercises are motivating, helpful, and heartening. This is a landmark career book that everyone should read!
Finally, a quality career book for us!.......2003-09-13
Kirk Snyder's "Lavender Road to Success" is not just about success and money. Itýs about really getting honest with who you are as a gay person and believing that you are worth going after your dreams. Snyderýs ý7 Points of Successý is worth the price of the book alone. Finally, somebody "gets it" when it comes to being gay and creating your own career success.
A lot of career books just talk around issues, but this one cuts to the chase, in part due to the stories Snyder tells about other gay people all over the country. I didn't go to USC, but I felt like I knew all of these people so well and learned so much from them. I have never seen a compilation this complete and so well told. It's actually a page-turner which surprised me.
The exercises in the book seemed like they were written just for me, which after reading this book, I know that others have experienced so much of what I have went through in my own life. Reading the book gave me a plan of my own to move ahead and I also feel like I'm part of a greater whole.

Customer Reviews:
Simple.......2000-02-17
I've read indexing books by John Bogle, Charles Ellis and Larry Swedroe but this is the book I bought for my niece and nephew. It's concise yet informative and appropriate for anyone with at least a high school education looking for a good explanation of the benefits of indexing.
Good book for beginners.......1999-07-12
I was a total dummy when it came to investing. I wanted a book to teach me the basics of investing. This book more than met my needs. It only took a couple of hours to read, but it covered the basics of mutual funds, index funds, and asset allocation. The book was very easy to read and was not filled with terminology I did not understand. After reading the book, I am ready to start investing in index funds, and I have already started to learn more about asset allocation. A must read book for people new to mutual fund investing!
Very basic information.......1999-04-12
This book is written for the total newbie to mutual fund investing. It does not offer specific advice on indicies or asset allocation, but it does make a clear argument for why to use a broad market index as the foundation for one's investment strategy. This is a one hour read.
Wish this book was available 3 years ago!.......1999-03-05
3 years ago I invested a bunch of money in load funds selected by a financial planner. I also put some of the money into stocks I picked. After reading this book, if I had only put my money in index funds! If I had invested in index mutual funds I would have made tens of thousands more money over the last 3 years. Book was great because it explained investing in language I could understand!
Great book for experienced mutual fund investors.......1999-02-15
I have been investing in mutual funds for over 10 years. I was selecting my funds based on how well they did compared to other funds. Through this book, I learned to compare the performance of my funds to the S&P 500 Index. I'm now a believer in using Index Funds for most of my investments!!

Book Description
Policing the Elephant, the companion volume to Law for the Elephant, examines criminal activity and its consequences among travelers on the overland trail in the early nineteenth century. Reid consulted hundreds of primary sources to discover how justice was meted out--without police, attorneys, or courts. Separating fact from fiction, he explores how emigrants dealt with spousal abuse, homicide, robbery, organized crime, and larceny. He also looks into famous episodes of executions. Introducing real people and real incidents, his book shows that Americans have been far more law abiding than television, the movies, and pulp fiction would often have us believe.

This book helps one learn from the critical experience of others..........2005-07-04
We learn by example and the profiles in this book have much to teach us. Among the significant examples is Penny Harrington, the first woman in America to lead a major metropolitan police department. As said by police historian Dorthy Moses Schulz, "Penny Harrington is one of only a handful of people who can claim to have changed American policing forever...." The lessons learned by Penny - and the important lessons she shares with others - can be read in her highly intimate autobiography, "Triump of Spirit," which was published in 1999. Penny is not only a criminal justice pioneer, she is a shining example of a woman who beat the odds and paved the way for all women who strive for a career in law enforcement. (The reviewer is the author of "Top Cops: Profiles of Women in Command," which also profiled Penny and 12 other brave women who broke through the brass ceiling of policing.)

Endocrines and Osmoregulation: A Comparative Account of the Regulation of Water and Salt in Vertebrates
P.J. Bentley
Manufacturer: Springer-Verlag
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Hardcover
ASIN: 0387052739 |
Book Description
The new edition of P.J. Bentley's established text describes the physiological mechanisms utilized by different vertebrate species to adapt to the differences and vicissitudes of water and salt availability in their natural environments. The book is especially concerned with the roles of endocrine glands in coordinating and maintaining such osmoregulation. It provides information about the environmental stresses and physiological and endocrine processes involved in the osmoregulation in each phyletic order of the vertebrates, and it describes the physiological adaptations they have evolved to foster their survival in osmotically hostile habitats. The second edition provides a comprehensive update utilizing the considerable amount of new data which have been collected over the past years. From a review of the previous edition: "I strongly recommend it as an essential reading and reference book for younger and older workers alike". Nature

Customer Reviews:
Terrible lab manual.......2007-02-24
I inherited this lab manual when I started teaching physical geology this semester, and I told my students to return it to the bookstore. It contains factual errors (such as referring to hornblende and other non-metallic minerals as metallic, which they are not - metallic minerals are opaque in thin section), and the pedagogy is highly questionable. In the rock and mineral sections, it relies too heavily on photographs. Students already have a tendency to want to simply match minerals and rocks to pictures, which doesn't work, and this book encourages this. The book is too much talk and not enough action. Students in a lab should be guided to work with objects, not to simply answer questions out of a book. There is too much explanation provided, with little left for students to figure out on their own. Labs should be presented to students as mysteries to be solved, and this book takes all the mystery out of everything.
Geology Prof........2007-01-06
This "lab manual" is VERY thick and far too wordy. Really, it's more of a spiral-bound textbook than a lab manual. Additionally, the lab questions appear in list format at the end of each section, so there is virtually no standardized answersheet for students to record their work on. That not only makes it harder on the students, but efficient grading is nearly impossible unless the instructor makes his/her own taylor-made answer sheets for the students to use on EACH lab. As if that weren't bad enough, the lab manual's companion web site is horrid. I am amazed that the AGI and the NAGT produced this lab manual.
Because they asked me to.......2006-11-04
I bought this book for school, since my school was out of the book and this one was cheaper. It does the job, it is probably less expensive than your school, and you can't get a used one because usually some of the pages you need are missing.
Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology.......2006-08-08
Publishers are driving me nuts with their inflated prices...they made a small number of edition #6 which was considered their best one and then let their supplies run out so that schools would have to buy their "new" one. After flipping through it, it is clear that it is nearly identical to the sixth edition lab manual. Such a waste.
Incorrect Item .......2006-01-19
I orderd one item and received something else. This item was needed for an on-line class and due to the error I am behind schedule on my class work.

I love learning about geology, especially how the Earth was formed, what the various layers are, and about different types of rocks. Volcanoes and earthquakes are also very cool. I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about the Earth they live on.

Book Description
Concerned strictly with the principles and formalism of quantum mechanics, this graduate student-oriented volume develops the subject as a fundamental discipline. Opening chapters review the origins of Schrödinger's equations and the nature of the solutions in certain simple and well-known cases, advancing to the ideas associated with vector spaces. Having provided students with the appropriate mathematical language, the author proceeds to the formulation of the main principles of quantum mechanics and their immediate consequences. The book concludes with final generalizations in which alternative "languages" or representations are discussed (each with reference to its specific advantages and applications), and the Dirac transformation theory is developed and explained. 1972 ed. 15 Figures.
