They can also drive you insane if you let them. In fact, I'm pretty sure you can think yourself into happiness, depression, frustration and just about any other emotion you can think of.

What are you thinking of today? Are you stressed about a situation? Are you dreaming of a vacation? What are you saying to yourself right now? When you start to compare what you are thinking about to how your emotions are rolling along, it becomes very apparent that you either have to change your way of thinking or the words you use will start to control you in the wildest ways.

Howard Kaminsky and Alexandra Penney have been great friends for 20 years or more. Together they have created a rather interesting book.

Words can Hurt or Heal. They can also show that we have manners or that we know how to behave in various situations. "Magic" words can give us hope, show us things in a new light and can help us cope with situations that would actually overtake us if we did not control our thinking.

Are you dealing with a stressful situation? When are we not dealing with stress! Anyway, this book will give you some ideas on how to use "Magic" words to deal with this stress. Sometimes you are just dying inside and you don't show it on the outside. There is a story about a woman who was going through a terrible time. She cried for weeks and then finally she started to say magic words and felt herself moving from tragedy to success.

"It's a rough patch in the long road of life."

The authors make you rethink a few phrases, like "Time is Money" becomes "Time is Honey." They encourage you to see those beautiful moments in time that taste sweet.

Other ideas like telling people you really need them or you need their help, gives the situation a new focus and people are more willing to help you out of your problem.

Words are extremely powerful, use
them with caution.

This book was very helpful to me. There were a number of situations in which I recognized myself, and could apply the advice. Try reading a few pages and you will see.

You could do better.......2002-03-06

This book is a very easy to read little set of "wise" tidbits, told through anecdotes (mostly about very "improtant" multi millionaires and anonomous famous people. The book is broken up into three sections: Magic words to say to yourself; Magic words you say to others; and finally Magic Words universal. Nothing really profound and its not very deep. Neither of the co-authors have a background in Psychology, so I sort of wonder what the base their authority on. If you really want something like this, but more insightful, try either "Dont Sweat the Small Stuff" or my favorite "Finding Joy: 101 ways to free your spirit and dance with life" All three of these are based on the same premise of changing yourself and your behaviors so you can enjoy life, but the last two are just MUCH better.

Yes. A Handbook, Not A Textbook........2007-03-19

As the title claims, it's a handbook not a textbook; therefore, it doesn't explain concepts in depth and doesn't support them with examples or case scenarios. It, in fact, like other handbooks just tells or dictates, and the reader must take the principles on faith. Handbooks normally save time of those who just want to cram or learn the principles to forget later on. My recommendation to students is that this book is NOT for you. If you only want this book to pass the course, you would rather buy any "outlines", "crash course", or "dummy series". For all others, it's a good handbook, certainly a good reference as well.

It has a broad coverage in topics and gives you a reasonably good introduction as well as some tips such as pros and cons of getting into certain types of transacrtions, etc., when you want to look up an topic that is not familiar to you. However, naturally due to the neture of any reference book, you would need to look for other textbooks if you want to dig into more. One thing that needs a little improvement is that there are at least a few errors in calculations and/or application of formulas (e.g. calculations related to lease transactions), which may bother you, especialy because you are looking to this handbook when you want to have a good idea on whatever the topic you are looking at since you are not too familiar with the topic....

For an experienced financial professional, this text does not add much value. The book touches upon a great many subjects, but does not appear to cover any one in any depth. The book may be most appropriate as an introductory text on the subject on the undergraduate level but not as a practioner's desk reference. As a professional with significant experience in investment banking with a CPA and MBA, I was looking for in-depth guide to the specific mechnanics of the contoller's function.

I don't understand the reviewer who complained about the typewritten appearance of some forms in here. I care a lot more about thoroughness and accuracy than appearance. I used the first editions of this work with great success, so I immediately got this updated version.

This book covers e-v-e-r-y-t-h-i-n-g -- truly helpful for handling all that practical day-to-day stuff they didn't cover realistically in business school.

Disappointment.......2001-11-23

I am a CPA and Corporate Controller of a mid-size company and I was really disappointed with this book, I thought it would be a lot more thorough, accurate and detail oriented then it actually was. Instead, the majority of the book's illustrations seem to be over 20 years old, appear to be hand-typed, and I doubt accurate anymore in today's modern world. Some chapters consist of general remarks instead of a thourough and accurate description of the issue, background, and the solution. This book is probably helpful for a CEO or COO that would like to get an understanding of the financial environment of his company or for a new Controller that just started his career.

Company Finance.......2001-09-03

This books explains in detail what a controller does besides "maintains the financials" and tells people no. I used this book working with a small company. I had to invent the position on a daily basis. Very helpful were the forms and job descriptions. How to set up an accounting calendar? here is an example. What are some pitfalls of the job? risk management? more explinations. I wrote checks daily, that changed with knowledge from this book. Excellent checklist to establish outside relations, with whom and why.
As controller for a much larger company the principles remained the same. In my exp. few people really know what a controller does. The CFO (30 yrs +) didn't have a job description for me. Again the postion had to be invented and this book was invaulable. I never knew that the org chart was a controller function, after reading this book, it makes perfect sense. I would not take a controller position, in any company, without this book in my office.

A Mentor at your fingertips.......2001-01-20

This book has been a significant "advisor" to me in establishing practical policies and procedures for the small corporation for which I am a CFO. I recommend this book highly to everyone working in any financial function in any size company as it will enhance your understanding of the financial processes for yourself and your colleagues. I believe that it will help the reader with better compliance in all areas that will ultimately increase shareholder value.

Treasurer's and Contoller's Desk Book.......2000-04-06

As a new controller that is basically needing to create the job as I go along, I am finding this book to be very helpful. It contains practical information that applies specificallly to the controller's position that is is difficult to find in other sources. One example of this is the information on a records retention policy. I wasn't able to find any information elsewhere. This book not only provided me with information, but also told me where to look for more information. Reading this book is like having a mentor available to me.

This volume focuses on the relationship between the nervous and the immune system with regard to the effects of drugs of abuse and infections, including infection caused by the immunodeficiency virus which causes AIDS, the number one health problem worldwide. Chapters focus on the brain-immune axis, detailing the effects of drugs of abuse. It is well known that recreational drugs of abuse such as morphine, cocaine, and marijuana, as well as other drugs, including the legal drugs alcohol and nicotine, are used by large numbers of individuals. Serious concerns have been raised about the consequences of using such drugs, especially in relation to their effects on normal physiological responses, including immune mechanisms. It is now widely recognized not only that many drugs of abuse have serious consequences on normal parameters of neurologic and neuroendocrine systems in general but also that effects on those systems, in turn, may affect indirectly immunity and also directly affect immune systems. Much data has now been accumulated showing that drugs of abuse markedly alter the immune response in human populations as well as in experimental animals, both in vivo and in vitro. Furthermore, studies on microbial infections have shown that many drugs of abuse are associated with increased susceptibility to infectious diseases, especially opportunistic intracellular microorganisms, including viruses such as HIV which causes AIDS. The mechanisms whereby drugs of abuse increase the likelihood of infections by opportunistic microorganisms in humans as well as in experimental animals are delineated. This volume will further the understanding of the impact of drugs of abuse on the brain-immune axis and its relationship to immunomodulation and infection, especially that caused by the AIDS virus.

As the Faure's 1986 2nd version being the 'classic' isotope textbook for geology, this book improved from the older version by adding new materials and new references.
It covers all of the important isotopes for geologic use including their basic geochemistry. Faure and Mensing explain everything clearly. All of the materials are nicely arranged and well written.
The only issue here is that there are many typos you can find if you read carefully.
I would recommond this book to geologists at all levels!

Not a Good Revision of a Classic Book.......2006-12-27

The 1st edition by Adrian Melissinos is a classic reference book with a wealth of practical information and data. That book was published in 1966; yet much of the theoretical treatments and methods are still applicable today. This 2nd edition either deleted or replaced some important original material. The 2nd edition did not do a good job in discussing new developments since the publication of the last edition. For instance, in the discussion of the Fabry-Perot method for high resolution spectroscopy, there was no mention of using a piezoelectric actuator which is commonly used at present and a significant development since the publication of the 1st edition. Useful data in nuclear experiments were deleted. A chapter of useful techniques in the 1st edition that deals with useful procedures such as pulse height analysis and basic vacuum technique was deleted and replaced by a lame chapter on Electronics and Data Acquisition. Overall, if you just ignore the 1960's electronics in the 1st edition, I believe the rest is still better that this 2nd edition.

Excellent experimental reference!!!.......2003-05-01

I purchased this book with hopes of gaining some insight into the theoretical aspects of the modern physics experiments I was working on in a junior laboratory. I must say that this book has been invaluable. The author masterfully details the most fundamental experiments in modern physics, making the material accessible to beginning undergrad students, yet still theoretically rich enough for advanced experimental practice.

Most modern physics experiments can more than likely be referenced somewhere in this book, which serves as a lab manual complete with data samples and example analysis. For myself, the analysis techniques employed in the experiments contained within this book were the most helpful. Any physics student with experience in an advanced lab would agree that data and error analysis are the most critical part of any lab, making this book ideal as a reference.

I give this book five stars, but I must admit only one disappointment with its binding. I read a review, prior to buying this text, stating that the hardcover binding is somewhat prone to wearing out quickly, and indeed I think I have seen the beginning of this demise. However, I have made extensive use of the book, which has undoubtedly contributed to this problem.

Otherwise, I have gotten every cent's worth out of this book!

More Amazonian bungling!.......2006-11-18

Yet again the folks at Amazon have bungled matters. The other "review" of this book is in fact a review of (or a puff for) the Penn series of translations of Greek tragedy, not of Euripides' "Selected Fragmentary Plays," a scholarly edition offering Greek texts, English translations, and detailed notes on several of Euripides' fragmentary plays. It should also noted that the book in question is the recently published---and long-awaited---second volume of a work whose first volume appeared in 1995. Eventually, there will be a Loeb Classical Library edition of the major fragments of Euripides, but it is unlikely to replace these volumes of Collard et al., for their very full notes will remain invaluable.

I went to Columbia, with the most prominent 'great books' curriculum still in existence. 25 years later, I'm finding myself re-reading and discussing many of the titles.
