Excellent for Public Speakers.......2005-01-10
In all her offerings she is candid, funny, and brilliant in sharing the secrets of public speaking and becoming a successful entrepreneur, which she learned, not in the long, tedious process of earning an MBA, but as a hair-dresser in San Francisco for fifteen years. She asked pertinent questions as she cut the hair of successful business men and women, and she figured out how to apply them to her own life and dreams. And you can too, as she takes you, step-by-encouraging step into the How To of fulfilling your own dreams. She is currently the first woman President of the 4,000 member National Speakers Association. As the winner of every one of the awards the Association offers, she is designated a "speakers' speaker" and generously shares her tips of the trade in her fascinating books, CD's, speeches and on her website. No public speaker should miss her works, and you'll love her charming British accent.
Get ready to be motivated.......2000-12-18
Very easy read (definitely in 1 sitting for me). Personally, I like books that get to the point quickly and does not ramble on and on. Great anecdotes that make the point. Patricia has a very friendly tone and her cheerleader personality comes through without sounding fake. She is a true believer in herself and shares with her reader SPECIFIC WAYS to do the same. The book does not apply only to people in the sales profession. If you are just waiting around to get recognized or promoted, this book is definitely for you.
Common Sense Sisterly advice.......2000-08-02
I like Patricia Fripp. I sense she is a smart, genuine person with real heart, and has lots of valuable experience to share with other people who meet the public for a living. I'm sure she'd be great fun to have dinner with. That said, nothing in this short book runs very deep, centered as it is around business anecdotes and focusing on sales, but if you want some idea of how this little English hairdresser achieved success in the American business world as a public speaker and sales coach, this is a quick, painless way to get that idea. Though she quotes her brother a few times (guitar legend Robert), I wouldn't expect this book to give you much insight into his thinking.

Book Description
Maps, as we know, help us find our way around. But they're also powerful tools for someone hoping to find you. Widely available in electronic and paper formats, maps offer revealing insights into our movements and activities, even our likes and dislikes. In Spying with Maps, the "mapmatician" Mark Monmonier looks at the increased use of geographic data, satellite imagery, and location tracking across a wide range of fields such as military intelligence, law enforcement, market research, and traffic engineering. Could these diverse forms of geographic monitoring, he asks, lead to grave consequences for society? To assess this very real threat, he explains how geospatial technology works, what it can reveal, who uses it, and to what effect.
Despite our apprehension about surveillance technology, Spying with Maps is not a jeremiad, crammed with dire warnings about eyes in the sky and invasive tracking. Monmonier's approach encompasses both skepticism and the acknowledgment that geospatial technology brings with it unprecedented benefits to governments, institutions, and individuals, especially in an era of asymmetric warfare and bioterrorism. Monmonier frames his explanations of what this new technology is and how it works with the question of whether locational privacy is a fundamental right. Does the right to be left alone include not letting Big Brother (or a legion of Little Brothers) know where we are or where we've been? What sacrifices must we make for homeland security and open government?
With his usual wit and clarity, Monmonier offers readers an engaging, even-handed introduction to the dark side of the new technology that surrounds us—from traffic cameras and weather satellites to personal GPS devices and wireless communications.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting but light reading on Surveillance technology.......2006-06-11
This books addresses some topics on satellite imaging, and other technology fields applied to surveillance.
While an interesting reading, and providing very good detail (evolution of satellite resolution over the years) in some areas, it stays on the surface of others, giving the reader (me at least) the impression that there was a lot left outside. Some chapters do not deal with privacy of individuals, but communities.
The book is short and easy to read, and will provide with some good "food for thought".
good overview of satalite technologies.......2003-03-27
this is a great book. its easy to read and informative. it gives clear examples and even includes pictures to help the explain concepts its talking about. its a good sampling of what satelite technology can and cant do and what and how its used in our everyday lives. and about how satelites are used in making maps and mapping and what the maps are used for.
An intriguing examination of the science of spying.......2003-02-09
Spying With Maps: Surveillance Technologies And The Future Of Privacy blends an examination of surveillance technologies with a discussion of the nature and future of privacy in a world which is becoming increasingly open to spy apparatus. Spying With Maps could have been featured in our chapter on social issues, but is reviewed here for its intriguing examination of the science of spying, from using geographic data and satellite imagery to location tracking devices.

Book Description
While traditional studies in this field have been of rural life, most of the authors in this collection take on urban subjects, and with them the challenging issues of power, class, race, ethnicity, subculture, and cultural opposition. There is a chapter by J.B. Jackson, the field`s foremost proponent and exemplar, on the nature of the vernacular house and the garage. Some of the other contributors include James Borchert on the social stratification of Cleveland suburbs; Rina Swentzell on a comparison of native and federal environments on the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico; Reuben Rainey on the Gettysburg battlefield; Dolores Hayden on the potentials of ethnic landscape documentation; and Denis Cosgrove on spectacle and society. Still other authorsWilbur Zelinsky, Richard Walker, Dell Upton, David Lowenthal, Jay Appleton, and Robert Riley-explore the problems and potentials of vision and space as sources of social interpretation. The book also includes a historical review of recent trends in the field of landscape studies and an annotated bibliography.

A Must For Anyone Interested In The Landscape!.......1998-12-29
This small book, with a simple title, Understanding Ordinary Landscapes, is a huge resource in the area of cultural landscape, and our connections through culture to nature. The initial attraction was the fun and entertaining sound of the title- understanding ordinary landscapes. Something for recreational travel reading? It was not to be. Months later I have yet to reconcile more than a few of the classical issues, dilemmas, enigmas, and debates in this seemingly simple subject area of our relationship to the world we live in.
Understanding Ordinary Landscapes is a collection of contemporary cultural landscape essays and is a theoretical basis for comprehending the mysteries of perception of the landscape, the environment, and furthering the culture versus nature discourse. It brings critical analysis, and an annotated bibliography to the relatively new area of landscape architectural theory. A must for professionals and anyone interested in the landscape.

Book Description
This compelling book offers a fresh perspective on how the natural world has been imagined, built on, and transformed by human beings throughout history and around the globe. Coverage ranges from the earliest societies to preindustrial China and India, from the emergence in Europe of the modern world to the contemporary global economy. The focus is on what the places we have created say about us: our belief systems and the ways we make a living. Also explored are the social and environmental consequences of human activities, and how conflicts over the meaning of progress are reflected in today's urban, rural, and suburban landscapes. Written in a highly engaging style, this ideal undergraduate-level human geography text is illustrated with over 25 maps and 70 photographs.
Note: Many additional photographs related to the themes addressed in the book, and a link to updates keyed to each chapter, are available at the author's website (www.greatmirror.com.)

Book Description
An innovative contribution to the literature of cultural geography, this book explores the evolution of landscape--both material and symbolic--from the standpoint of the populations, cultures, and human decision-making processes that shape and give it meaning. Focusing on evolution, behavior, symbolism, and ecology, Norton offers a critique of the literature of cultural and social geography and articulates a framework of central issues that connect a wide range of theoretical approaches. In the first four chapters, Norton gives detailed consideration to both traditional and contemporary literature and methodologies and to the links between cultural geography and other social science concepts and analytical methods. The remaining chapters are concerned with the causes and consequences of cultural landscape evolution and the variables affecting it, including language, religion, politics, society, economy, and the physical environment. In addressing these areas of cultural geography, Norton promotes an approach that integrates the contributions of geography with those of anthropology, sociology, psychology, and history. His analysis provides a useful synthesis of the conceptual and empirical content of cultural geography and suggests promising new directions for research in the field. Norton's work will prove a valuable classroom and library resource for students and scholars in cultural and social geography and related areas of sociology and anthropology.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent helper in laboratory.......2000-04-04
I bought this book upon a lot of advices of my friends who attended Internetional Physics Olympiads.I'm coaching Olympiads Preparation students in my school. They had some difficulties in measuring, calculating the errors and evaluating their results. The book showed a lot of ways to prevent it. Statistical approach to datas in evaluating errors is invaluable for some experiments, esp radioactive decay experiments. Also the representation of errors in graphs is helpful to students in expressing their experiments result since the evaluations are the most important part of the experiments and errors are indispensable part of it.Now my clidren are more confident and they are more promising.

Product Description
In Symposium, a group of Athenian aristocrats attend a party and talk about love, until the drunken Alcibiades bursts in and decides to discuss Socrates instead. Symposium gives an unsurpassed picture of the sparkling society that was Athens at the height of her empire. The setting of the other dialogues is more sombre. Socrates is put on trial for impiety, and sentenced to death. Euthyphro discusses the nature of piety, Apology is Socrates' speech in his own defence, Crito explains his refusal to escape punishment, and Phaedo gives an account of Socrates' last day. These dialogues have never been offered in one volume before. Tom Griffith's Symposium has been described as 'possibly the finest translation of any Platonic dialogue'. All the other translations are new.
