Excellent mix of theory and applied work........2000-02-12

This book is the perfect liasion between the microeconomics realm of information economics and the real world of banking and financial intermediation. It supplies a healthy dose of microeconomic theory to fully understand the underlying features of the most common financial instruments used in modern banking practice, all explained thoroughly with down to earth narratives and doable math/game theoretic instruments. It makes a wonderful preview before going on with Freixas text, or at least as its companion.

Save your money!.......2005-08-23

I was disappointed to find after I bought two copies of this "book" that it was a 50-60 page pamphlet
at $12.95 each. The information was very general and it was not worth the money.

Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) has become important in rice farming systems because this process diminishes the need for expensive chemical fertilizers which have been associated with numerous health and environmental problems. The extensive exploitation of BNF would provide economic benefits to small farmers, avoiding all malign influences of chemical fertilizers.
Meanwhile, advances in biotechnology have brought rice genetics to the threshold of new opportunities for increasing rice production.
This volume focuses, in six different sessions, on the role of BNF in the improvement of rice production in the light of the current state of the art of BNF technology transfer and diffusion. New ideas on BNF technology in research, extension information and inoculant technology are also included, together with the socio-economic impacts of using BNF in rice farm systems.

At 7 a.m. on August 29, Hurricane Katrina made landfall on the Louisiana coast between Grand Isle and the mouth of the Mississippi River as a strong Category 4 hurricane. I know some reviewers seemed to think the twists rather cliched, but I absolutely loved this! Maybe I just don't read enough fantasy or perhaps I'm one of those "younger kids" that were mentioned, but either way I really truly loved it! I normally have trouble finishing short story collections all the way to the end, (it's just something about jumping from story-to-story all the time) so it's really saying something about a book whenever I do!!

a mixed bag.......2005-04-11

With a couple of exceptions, this group of darkly philosophical fantasy stories is thought-provoking but not suitable for younger/more sensitive readers. Veteran fantasy lovers are likely to find the twists a bit too predictable, while Coville's extremely low-key tone (obviously chosen to play up the "surprise" elements) can get really wearing. Check the book out at the library, read "Homeward Bound" and "Blaze of Glory" (which are very much worth your time and pack a surprising and beautiful punch), and let the rest go.

Good for younger kids.......2004-06-13

This is fine for younger kids who wouldn't see some of these "twists" coming. But it is definitely not for anyone older. I read books on a few different levels. Some are very good even if they're intended for younger readers. But this book was just so cliche and predictable. I knew what was going to happen a couple of pages through each story. And some things didn't seem very developed, even though they had potential. But, some of the other books by Bruce Coville are good. Look for those.

Something special.......2003-12-02

I read these tales out loud to my son. Most of them are well-written, clever examples of speculative fiction. Like any collection of short fiction, some works are better than others, some more worthwhile than others. "Duffy's Jacket" is wonderful fun, and most kids will easily understand and enjoy it. "The Language of Blood" is highly imaginative, but may be difficult for younger children who are yet unable to slip their minds into another culture and time. And then there is "Old Glory," which alone is worth the price of the book. I strongly recommend reading it aloud, since it's worth some discussion. . . .

Disappointing.......2000-05-15

Bruce Coville has written a collection of wholesome short stories extolling the virtues of faith, patience, reconciliation, peace, remembrance, inner beauty and forgiveness. Incidentally, none of the tales really appeal to me, since I don't tend to like stories with Wholesome Messages. Most of them come across as a little bland and predictable, and I particularly didn't like the message about faith in "The Box." I love stories that have a surprising or chilling twist at the end-- exemplified in Patricia C. Wrede's "Cruel Sisters" and Vivian Vande Velde's "Straw into Gold" and "Lost Soul" and "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson. The stories found in Oddly Enough are neither inspiring nor inspired, and I would tend to agree with Coville when he said he never thought of himself as a short story writer. However, I can see how these stories might appeal to younger fantasy readers, and parents should certainly approve of them. The cover art is also gorgeous; it is only unfortunate the stories did not turn out to be as spontaneous and surreal. If you like your stories with a bit more...attitude, I would suggest Wrede's excellent anthology, The Book of Enchantments, Vivian Vande Velde's Curses, Inc., or A Wizard's Dozen, which is a good collection of YA fantasy stories by different authors.

This book was read by both myself and my parents and I plan on pasing it on to freinds. It is the 1st book I have read that takes you through the complete human emotion. The complexity of the character's emotional roller coaster ride takes you from one end of the spectrum to the other of the human psyche. ...if you are a male that has ever had to struggle with a disfunctional family or question your sexuality this is a must read. But it is an entertaining book for any adult. The author really makes the characters come alive and you can get close and personal whith them, the book [pulls] you into the story. I found it hard to put down!

Uncomfortable, Lurid and Sweet.......2001-04-27

Is this a love story? I can't remember when I enjoyed a book so much. The story moves along but pauses for empathy, a rare quality. The lead character experiences some very uncomfortable moments and does some very uncomfortable things, read at your own risk. However, the over-riding feeling in this story is lurid and sweet, reminding me of what it was like to feel passion at a young age. The insights into the emotions and motivations were enlightening. The love story was absorbing.

Suprisingly honest and hard hitting!.......2001-03-28

This was one of the most shockingly up-front and racey books I've read in a long time. This story may be taboo, but you can't stop reading it! It's like being on a carnival ride, you want to cover your eyes, but you just have to keep looking. The writing is plain and the reading is fast. You can't help but like the characters, which in and of itself, is the most surprising aspect of the story. Definately worth reading!

I predict this story will have a profound effect upon the world and how people view different types of love relationships. this story drew me in, I read for 3 nights straight! I couldn't put it down. The story itself is touching, mysterious and builds to an ending that surprised and inspired me. I would love to read more by this author!

Odly Enough.......2001-03-18

Oddly Enough by Savannah North will live up to its reputation as the ' Underground Novel of the Millenium'. This is an important subject matter which needed to be addressed. In the beginning I found that this read is not for the faint of heart, however, it was a real page-turner, which I found difficult to put down. I loved the way the author depicted each character, which gave them separate colors of their own. Many people in the world today can relate in some way to this story or it's characters. It was a bit of a cliff-hanger before the story ended, with redemtion at the end. I strongly reccommend that if you have not read Oddly Enough by Savannah North, get your feet wet and jump right in.
