This kind of "realisitc" advice for the workplace has not been assembled in one location before-- because few thoughtful people wanted to wallow in the psychic cesspool of the corporate workplace. This book is filled with information on what to avoid-- if you expect to keep your sanity and stay human.

On the other hand, if you want to trade your soul for a parking space and a corner cubicle, buy it.

Viscusi knows the way of the workplace, and his advice is always insightful and to the point. There are great strategies here for how to think about your work life (and he convinces it is a work life, separate from your other life), so that you're sane both on and off the job, and so that you're positioned to make the most of job/career every day. A must-have for anyone starting a new job, whether entering work for the first time or re-entering after change of career or time off.

This book argues that the concept of a field of cultural production is essential to accounting for the ways in which writers and editors respond to political and economic forces. It traces the formation of dominant concepts of literature, competing literary trends, and how these ideas have met political and market challenges.

Contemporary Taiwanese literature has often been neglected and misrepresented by literary historians both inside and outside of Taiwan. I greatly enjoy this new book. It offers me an encompassing social-intellectual historical overview/analysis of Taiwan's literature.

As a stranger to the Taiwanese literary scene, this book
would be better to me if Chinese characters would accompany the English transliteration of Mandarin proper names.

A better textbook than a field guide.......2001-09-11

Not all regional field guides are the same: some aim to be thorough references of their subject matter, others aim to be useable in the field. This one is as much a university-level textbook on Alberta herpetofauna, with general information as well as discussions of local habitat that take up more room than the species descriptions themselves.

On the one hand, this makes for a useful reference to its subject, particularly for biology students (its bibliography, for example, is enormous); on the other, its scanty species descriptions reduce its usefulness for those who want a field guide, or who want to know more specifically about the animals in question.

In at least one instance this limited space leads to an oversimplication that I believe to be incorrect: the book states that garter and hognose snakes are rear-fanged and mildly venomous. While they have enlarged rear teeth and their saliva does seem to cause reactions in some people, I do not believe that is the same as venom produced by venom glands and delivered by hollow fangs, as is the case with true rear-fanged snakes (such as Hypsiglena, Trimorphodon, Boiga). In any event, the characterization overlooks such subtleties, which detracts from our understanding of these animals.
