Ronni Eisenberg, who lectures and gives workshops on organization skills throughout the U.S., is also author of the popular but slightly more intimidating Organize Yourself!. Here she's brought a slew of practical tips for managing your workspace, from your briefcase to your bulletin board, from your e-mail inbox to those endless interruptions from coworkers. She covers the basics, including organizing your desktop and stemming the flood of junk mail (send a note to the Direct Marketing Association). She also hits upon modern organizational dilemmas, such as how to decide if you'd be better off with or without a PalmPilot. Some of the hundreds of handy tips she offers include:
- ways for making both in-person and telephone meetings quicker and more productive;
- methods for confronting procrastination and poor work habits;
- 10 rules to adhere to when filing; and
- 14 ways to make meetings run smoothly and accomplish what you want them to.
Much of Eisenberg's advice is geared toward the executive; she advises closing your office door to really concentrate on big projects, something that the cubicle-bound can't do. But if you aspire to have that corner office, or if you're prone to losing important documents or rushing to big meetings several minutes late with sweat beading up along your forehead, Eisenberg's words of wisdom should help you get your act in gear.

An almost complete checklist for the office.......2004-12-12
This book is somehow a checklist of what to do and what not to do in your office. But, it is just that; nothing deeper. I would say that it is complete, and it is for mid 1990s. But, in mid 2000s, with computers and e-mail to 'eat' most of our office time, it need some enhancement in these areas. It covers them, but it focus 85% on traditional and 15% on electronic office.
Good for Organizational Review.......2002-09-05
I thought the ideas and tips were well divided into chapters in this book. It was easy to look for hints in a specific topic area. However, the read was so quick that I found myself looking for more insight into the ideas behind some of the suggestions made. I have read other books that have been more detailed about the overall organization process and gave more concise directions on how to get started down finding your organizational flow. This book is a great organizational review tool for AFTER you have incorporated your personal organizational process. A good reminder of healthy organization tips, though, not necessarily a pool of original organizational hints.
Very informative.......2001-11-29
This book is incredible! After years of trying to organize, missing promotions because of my disorganization (losing items, unpolished image...), I have become reasonably organized. I have even had a professional organizer try to help me, to no avail.
Naturally, not every tip will apply to every office. I was pleasantly surprised to realize that many were generic enough to be informative, but instructional enough to help.
At less than ten dollars, this is a must-have.
Insightful!.......2001-05-25
Ronni Eisenberg’s book demonstrates how your work habits can be your best friends or your worst enemies when it comes to organizing your office productively. The book is a mixture of common-sense suggestions and useful organizational tips. She includes helpful hints for home-office workers and organizational tips for those who use personal digital devices. At times, it’s a little too intricate (you may feel you are getting detailed instructions on how to tie your shoes), however, it also offers organizational gems....

Book Description
The number of advertisements is steadily increasing around the world as affluence grows and more economies shift to a market system. One way to ensure that these ads are truthful, accurate, and wholesome is to rely on industry self-regulation. Through it, peers set up standards of good advertising practice and enforce them as an essential complement to government regulation. With the global expansion of advertising, the tasks of self-regulation have grown, together with some doubts regarding the industry's willingness and ability to develop and enforce ethical guidelines. This unique global study of the subject explores the spread of this social-control institution through a discussion of its relative strengths and weaknessess, a reporting of several surveys conducted by the author, and thirty-eight country profiles prepared with the assistance of practitioners around the world. The first chapter defines self-regulation, analyzes its pros and cons, relates it to government regulation, investigates its structures and processes, discusses the involvement of non-industry members in its functioning, evaluates its effectiveness, and considers its recent spread around the world in the light of new developments such as the completion of the European Common Market. A second section reports the key findings of surveys conducted by the author for the International Advertising Association in 1986 and 1988-89. The last part offers profiles of advertising self-regulation as practiced in thirty-eight countries--including such leading nations as Canada, France, the United Kingdom, and the United States. An appendix includes samples of key codes as well as various evaluations of the practice of advertising self-regulation around the world.

Marketing in plain English.......2007-01-12
I have to admit upfront that I purchased this book solely because a segment of one of its chapters solidified my position about the use of sans serif text in my company's global advertising. I am a marketing manager for a flooring manufacturer, but I do not have a marketing degree. Therefore, I read books and articles to supplement my on the job knowledge and experience. Principles of Advertising is a plain English, example-rich source book for current advertising ideas. It is also interspersed with insets called Global Perspectives and Ethics Tracks which compare U.S. advertising to other countries, and the ethics (or lack of ) found in advertising respectively. I find that I refer to it frequently in my day to day business for new and fresh ideas, and it does not bog you down with lofty rhetoric. I highly recommend it.
hi carla.......2000-04-29
Carla Johnson writes a riveting perspective on advertising. And that doesnt even tie in to the fact that shes almost like a grandma to me.I'd just like to thank her for being a wonderful author and friend. Sadly though, she's my only claim to fame. You go girl, Luv always, Dani

The Coming Economic Collapse: How You Can Thrive When Oil Costs $200 a Barrel
ASIN: 0865715106 |
Book Description
If the US continues with current policies, the next decades will be marked by war, economic collapse, and environmental catastrophe. Resource depletion and population pressures are about to catch up with us, and no one is prepared. The political élites, especially in the US, are incapable of dealing with the situation, and have in mind a punishing game of "Last One Standing."
The alternative is "Powerdown," a strategy that will require tremendous effort and economic sacrifice in order to reduce per-capita resource usage in wealthy countries, develop alternative energy sources, distribute resources more equitably, and reduce the human population humanely but systematically over time. While civil society organizations push for a mild version of this, the vast majority of the world's people are in the dark, not understanding the challenges ahead, nor the options realistically available.
Powerdown speaks frankly to these dilemmas. Avoiding cynicism and despair, it begins with an overview of the likely impacts of oil and natural gas depletion and then outlines four options for industrial societies during the next decades:
- Last One Standing: the path of competition for remaining resources;
- Powerdown: the path of cooperation, conservation, and sharing;
- Waiting for a Magic Elixir: wishful thinking, false hopes, and denial;
- Building Lifeboats: the path of community solidarity and preservation.
Finally, the book explores how three important groups within global society - the power élites, the opposition to the élites (the antiwar and anti-globalization movements, et al: the "Other Superpower"), and ordinary people - are likely to respond to these four options. Timely, accessible and eloquent, Powerdown is crucial reading for our times.
Listen to an interview with Richard Heinberg from WRPI.
Customer Reviews:
Weak; Verbose on non-thesis topics; Disappointing.......2007-07-15
The first 85 pages (of a 186 page book) are dedicated to verbosely enumerating the arguments from his previous book (without effectively arguing his reasoning). He also spends quite a bit of space to describing his opinions of the current U.S. administration. While I might agree with his political opinions, I believe that he undermines the thesis of this book in the minds of a lot more people. It is this reason why I would categorize this book is really nothing more than a "preaching to the choir" book.
The heart of the book is a 28 page chapter named "Powerdown" which provides some suggestions, but is mostly fluff. Probably the most important page in the chapter is the list of books that actually do discuss the powerdown scenario.
The third chapter is about how technology is unlikely to save us from dwindling energy.
The fourth chapter is about how people would react to the coming situation. He spends quite a while rehashing Gibbon's arguments on Rome and Diamond's arguments about ecological collapse. If you've read those two books you'll quickly notice that Heinberg and these two authors are on completely different planes of scholarship.
I was excited that he discussed, however briefly, how we might save information from the coming Dark Ages. Though, it was for only two pages.
Overall I thought that the author's arguments were weak and there really wasn't much that I got out of this book. I hope that other (and future) books in this genre will describe and defend the thesis better, and they should give more suggestions of what to do.
My eyes will never be the same........2007-04-29
From the article titled "Document Says Oil Chiefs Met With Cheney Task Force", in the Washington Post, "The White House went to great lengths to keep these meetings secret, and now oil executives may be lying to Congress about their role in the Cheney task force," Lautenberg said.
You might find the answer for why we are in Iraq, if you were to read "Powerdown: Options and Actions for a Post-Carbon World". This book is not a fiction based peak oil theory written by some fanatic. If the CIA were to have read this book, I think their internal book review would be a shocking confirmation. With the connection in the recent news of Cheney's secret energy meeting with oil execs, the CIA to Cheney, Cheney to the oil industry, the unprecedented preemptive war in Iraq, the facts in this book about how horrible the prospect, limited the options are and awful I feel to contemplate it all, all point to the fact that we, the American people don't want to know the truth, but read it or not, we will know that truth soon as we are forced to deal with it. How bad is the situation? On a scale from 0 to 10, it is off the scale.
Nostalgia for the good ol' days will seem sad and silly, for these days are the last of the good ol' days. you will not have any problem believing it unless you do not finish it or choose to live in denial. All good things must end and concidering the way the world has squandered a non-renewable resource like oil, it is a soon to be obvious and logical eventuality.
How much can you afford to pay for a gallon of gas in today's economy? How much will gas cost in a collapsed economy where your money isn't worth 10 cents on a dollar?
Who could ever have imagined 9/11? Or even what possible reasons there could be for a 9/11 conspiracy? Or presidential election fraud 2 elections in a row? A democratic government that does not have to tell you anything except that, "that information is secret" or "that information would jeopardize the security of" what or who? I can't really say I want to know either.
What I see now when I go about my days are people of all ages enjoying a good life that they do not know is about to come to an end, objects I use like monofilament fishing line, my toothbrush, anything plastic or that comes in plastic or in part is plastic, clothes, shoes, carpet and more all made from oil. Things I do and once enjoyed without a thought, drive to the store, watch a movie, listen to music, to the radio, and the variety of food available to me, may all be unaffordable even if available in my lifetime, what is left of it anyway. Do I want to feel this way? No. Do I want you to? No.
In the sci-fi movie "They Live" an economic crisis brings unemployed Nada (Roddy Piper) to L.A. in search of work. What he finds instead is that the ruling elite of the world are aliens in disguise, their aim being to keep humans in a state of mindless consumerism. His discovery comes when he dons a pair of special sunglasses made by a resistance group and sees for the first time reality unadorned. Billboards, store signs, magazine covers--all bear subliminal messages to OBEY, to CONSUME, to have NO INDEPENDENT THOUGHT. Money itself says THIS IS YOUR GOD. But worst of all, with these glasses you see which of us are really hideous, bug-eyed aliens.
Reading "Powerdown" is like putting on a pair of special sunglasses but you can only wish you could take them off. My eyes will never be the same.
Visionary.......2007-03-09
A must read for anyone concerned about the future. Heinberg understands the factors that will shape our world in the years to come as well as anyone.
PowerDown is a powerful book.......2007-01-11
Although the concept of Peak Oil and the implications it brings is growing in awareness amongst the general public, most people still don't understand what we will be facing in our lifetimes. This is an excellent primer for those who want to learn about peak oil, it's ramifications and what you can do to cope with this very real eventuality. Share it with those you love.
must read if you live in the industrial world........2007-01-05
Terrific education on the fossil fuel dependency problem. It's worse than you think, and affects you life in ways you haven't yet understood. This book led me to read "The Long Emergency" which truly exposes the crisis we have created. If you have children, you owe it to them to read these two books, Powerdown first, and The Long Emergency 2nd. Your life will never be the same. As an athiest, I can tell you that there is no cavalry on the way. The only hope is an as yet unknown technology that will provide the energy that keep this civilization afloat. Plastics, pharmaceuticals, fertilizers, pesticides, jet fuel, the electrical grid and all computer based technology anr standing on the shoulders of fossil fuels, and more than half - the easy to get half - is now used up. With no energy to save us, the climate catastrophe (whether it turns out to be a global furnace or a sudden ice age) that's in the pipeline will be here before my grandchildren are my age, 58. Humans are digging our own grave . . .

Handbook of Optical Constants of Solids, Author and Subject Indices for Volumes I, II, and III
ASIN: 0125444206 |
Book Description
While bits and pieces of the index of refraction
n and extinction coefficient
k for a given material can be found in several handbooks, the
Handbook of Optical Constants of Solids gives for the first time a single set of
n and
k values over the broadest spectral range (ideally from x-ray to mm-wave region). The critiquers have chosen the numbers for you, based on their own broad experience in the study of optical properties. Whether you need one number at one wavelength or many numbers at many wavelengths, what is available in the literature is condensed down into a single set of numbers.
* Contributors have decided the best values for n and k
* References in each critique allow the reader to go back to the original data to examine and understand where the values have come from
* Allows the reader to determine if any data in a spectral region needs to be filled in
* Gives a wide and detailed view of experimental techniques for measuring the optical constants n and k
* Incorporates and describes crystal structure, space-group symmetry, unit-cell dimensions, number of optic and acoustic modes, frequencies of optic modes, the irreducible representation, band gap, plasma frequency, and static dielectric constant

Erudite and encyclopedic but extremely expensive.......2001-07-17
I've used Palik & Ghosh as an occasional reference work for years, because it's very good, and has chapters on most of the materials I've needed to work with--metals, silicon, and oxide dielectrics of one sort or another. Obviously a lot of work went into it, and it's a pretty specialized business, measuring and tabulating optical properties. I'd give it 5 stars for content, no doubt about it--an orchid for the editors: for their part of the deal they deserve our praise and thanks.
The set gets about one star for value, because it's priced like a last-minute airline ticket--those who need it sufficiently badly will pay. The publishers want something getting on for a grand for 5 books, and *two and a half grand* for the same thing in software, which costs nothing to reproduce! For most people, the abbreviated tables in recent editions of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics are better than good enough, though it would be great to be able to afford Palik and Ghosh.
If the price ever comes down by a factor of three, I'd probably buy the books, but it would take a factor of 10 before I'd consider the software.

WV Writers among the Finest.......2007-10-07
This is a book well-worth the time it takes to read it, which is something that cannot be said of many books on the market today. Full of vibrantly-penned short stories and poems -- the kind that Jesse Stuart wrote and that become classics -- each holds the reader's interest from start to finish by grabbing his/her mind and heart and weaving it into the tale. Not being a native West Virginian, I'm free to say that Mountaineers take this writing business seriously, and as a result, aspiring writers can look to stories like the ones in this book as good examples of How to Write. If you're partial to downhome stories or smalltown life in coalmining regions or other stories along that line, buy "Backcountry..." you won't be disappointed.
Fantastic Collection -- Deceptive Credits.......2005-11-13
I was one of the students who is thanked for the "preliminary" work in the first couple pages of Backcountry. This book was fully and entirely constructed as the sole purpose of a course at West Virginia University. We, the students, with the aid of Professor James Harms, chose the authors we wished to include, the work for each of those authors, sought reproduction rights from the publishers, and wrote the short biographies on each author.
We felt that it would be something really special to tap the poet laureate of West Virginia, Irene McKinney, to write the introduction to the book - we also decided to include some of her work in the book. Happily she accepted.
We worked long and hard on this book and were all very excited that it would someday be released, available and, in turn, earn each and every one of us at least a partial editing credit.
When it was finally released, we received no credit outside of the easily missed page (not even in the official acknowledgement), nothing aside from a complimentary copy from the University thanking us for "involvement in the project which eventually produced Backcountry," and the surprise that McKinney had "edited" the book.
She did not.
I cannot see how our product is different from this book and why the "James Harms with the students of English 271" editing credit became Irene McKinney.
It is quite possible that the publisher made a mistake (a big mistake), or that I am missing some drastic difference between our book and this book. But, if neither is the case, then who is at fault?
I do not wish to accuse Dr. McKinney of theft, do not seek to be paid, or to otherwise downplay what is an exceptional collection, I only seek an explanation.
In other words, buy this book. As ONE OF ITS CREATORS, I can speak very highly of its content. Maybe if a second pressing comes, the wrongs will be righted.
Passive aggressively yours,
Colin
