5 out of 5 stars Great book for teachers.......2007-01-03

My daughter is a new teacher and loves all Dr. Seuss books.

5 out of 5 stars Good old doctor seuss.......2003-02-04

I was given this clever little book for my birthday last year (a gentle hint, perhaps, to get me on the right path?), and while I can't imagine paying [$$$] for it, that's about the only criticism I can dredge up. Anything by the good doctor is brilliant, of course. Anything he touches is magic. And we will always laugh.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Seuss-like Fun for the Workplace!.......2001-05-18

This book is marvelous and is both fun and educational in Seuss's classic rhyming style! It only left me wondering where the real "Grinch" or the corporate "Once-ler" really were among all the rhyming advice? Well, I finally found lots of those true-to-life "Grinch" and "Once-ler" like characters in the hilarious, educational and insightful satire, "MANAGEMENT BY VICE"!! With short, sharp verses, easy-to-read prose and a uniquely candid directness it addresses many important issues in both the R&D and corporate/managerial worlds! My sincere recommendation for MBA students and those struggling in the corporate mill is to memorize "Seuss-ism's for Success", yet never to forget the wise lessons in "Management by Vice" for they will help you avoid the tougher workplace pitfalls and make the changes that count and lead to greatly improved management/employee relations!

5 out of 5 stars Have Some Good Laughs About Organizational Stalls!.......2000-06-19

Dr. Seuss was thought to have been a writer for children, but every parent knows that there was plenty of content to keep the adults amused, too. Someone obviously had an interesting idea in selecting those parts of Dr. Seuss's work that apply to organizations.

The subjects covered include learning, setting goals, avoiding micromanagement, growth, surpassing competitors, cycles, speculation, chaos theory, the stock market, business trips, synergy, maintaining competitive advantage, synergy, delegating, corporate hierarchies, downsizing, innovation, and higher education.

You may well remember some of the rhymes. The idea of getting Horton to sit on the egg in the delegating section brought back happy memories.

The most apt rhyme to me was the one about having a watcher to watch a bee, because watched bees work harder. Except, of course, the bee did the same after it was watched as before.

Each rhyme is wonderfully illustrated.

A good use for this book would be to share the proper rhyme with a colleague who is getting it wrong. Humor is a good way to bust stalls.

Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A Must Read for College Students.......2000-04-10

In his whimsical childish style, Dr. Seus has done it again! His rhymes with the times and econominc health and what you want to do with your life, your MBA and all the fun things that intelligent (or not-so-intelligent) students need to know to get ahead in life and lead a healthy financial future. I had all of my students read this book in Lit 101 and do a book report for the class. I had 48 completely different takes on it and each student discovered something different. Highly recommneded for scholastic and for fun!

5 out of 5 stars Is Your "Money Attitude" Putting You at Risk?.......2006-09-25

As a CPA and attorney whose practice is devoted to addressing clients' retirement and estate planning needs I especially liked that Diane McCurdy's How Much is Enough: Balancing Today's Needs with Tomorrow's Retirement Goals helps readers figure out their "money attitude." For instance, are you a spender or a saver? Once you understand your own spending patterns and habits you can take steps to avoid the financial pitfalls common to each attitude. Perhaps the most important benefit of the book is that it helps readers choose their "Enough Number"--the amount that will be "Enough" for them after they retire. And she doesn't forget to factor in all of those things that concern us the most, like how we will afford those special luxuries on our retirement wish lists. Great job Diane! I will definitely be recommending How Much is Enough to my clients.

5 out of 5 stars Now VS Later.......2006-08-26

I'm part of the baby boomer generation and as we near retirement age, we worry. Have we lived too extravagantly and not planned and saved enough for retirement?
That's what this book is all about. McCurdy reminds us that it's never a good idea to go into debt unnecessarily. She recommends finding inexpensive ways to treat yourself and saving up for the big things. Too many people that I know have indulged themselves with fancy cars and exotic vacations without thought for the future. Here's a book that will help balance out current needs (and desires) while helping plan for retirement.

5 out of 5 stars "Money Personality" A Useful Tool In Financial Planning.......2005-10-06

As a financial advisor, I recommend this book to clients who need a good overview of money management and retirement planning. There are lots of books on specific types of investing, but this one is different. It's a comprehensive tool that gives clients a better understanding of what we're doing and enables them to ask more pertinent questions. The "money personality" aspect is a very useful device in helping people understand why they use money the way they do. My clients report that the book is very motivating too.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding the Key Elements to Financail Independence.......2005-10-05

I was very pleased with this book. It address the big issues and stays on the high ground instead of getting into all the technical details. I found it very empowering and just the right mix of stories to drive the key points home.

4 out of 5 stars Mark from Texas .......2005-10-05

Diane takes complicated subject matters down to the basics for all of us, and does it beautifully. This is a must read for the responsible person desiring financial fulfillment and freedom. A retirement nest egg should start immediately, and Diane explains the various choices in one the most user friendly formats I've seen in a long time. Once we understand ourselves, our wants and needs, then the financial trappings/battles can be overcome and won. She does a masterful job in helping us identify who we really are.

Due to Congressional pressure to expand efforts against violent crime, the Justice Department has experienced incredible growth; between 1981 and 1993, the department's budget more than quadrupled and the number of prosecutors doubled. Jim McGee and Brian Duffy, investigative reporters with the Washington Post and U.S. News and World Report respectively, focus on the department's criminal law enforcement activities in Main Justice. In addition to examining cases such as Aldrich Ames' arrest and the investigation of Colombia's Cali cartel, they discuss the department's role in authorizing FBI requests to conduct electronic surveillance in counterintelligence cases and the performance of Janet Reno--a "stone-cold law enforcer" who they believe is helping to lead us to a safer America.

      Book Description

This perceptive examination reveals how the Justice Department operates--from its role in history to critical evaluations of its wars against the Cali cocaine cartel, violent gangs in Shreveport and Chicago, high-level government espionage, and international terrorism.

              Book Description

Geophysicist M. King Hubbert predicted in 1956 that U.S. oil production would reach its highest level in the early 1970s. Though roundly criticized by oil experts and economists, Hubbert's prediction came true in 1970.

In this revised and updated edition reflecting the latest information on the world supply of oil, Kenneth Deffeyes uses Hubbert's methods to find that world oil production will peak in this decade--and there isn't anything we can do to stop it. While long-term solutions exist in the form of conservation and alternative energy sources, they probably cannot--and almost certainly will not--be enacted in time to evade a short-term catastrophe.

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars Quite a Whirlwind!.......2007-07-22

Taking a trip? Need a gift for that engineer or alternative-energy-green friend? Then get this book! For the professional AND the layman, Kenneth Deffeyes spans various disciplines with a good sense for explanation and storytelling. Quite a feat.

He starts with the origins of the oil business and knows what he is talking about. He makes statistics colorful AND engaging. His graphs are primo and easy to understand when he wishes to hammer home a point.

Deffeyes recounts Marion King Hubbert's sage predicition from the 1950s that oil supply and production has limits. And we had better learn about these limits, fast. No easy answers. Helluva history lesson in readable form. Makes one wants to read other book on the oil industry.

As a country and a culture, we've been riding the riches produced by the bounty of past eons. Our oil epoch will be just a blip on the long history of the earth and humanity. Read it and weep, or feel joyful. Your call.
Deffeyes lays out a coherent argument: the road ahead will not be all high speed and straight. We are in for some rough times and it is best that we engage in a realisitic national debate NOW.

He saves his best for last: meticulous explanations as to alternative energy sources. About time! Some have merit, most have gaping holes that will never payback their true energy investment. His section on "tar sands" is sobering and convincing.

Anyone who drives a car or lives in America oughta read this book.

4 out of 5 stars Technical, yet Readable!!!.......2007-05-02

I have read a few other books about the oil industry, which brought this book my way. The book provides a lot of interesting insight into why/where oil fields exist, the exploration, drilling, etc. Hubbert's Peak provides a substantial education and not just trivial facts about the size and flow rates of the biggest Saudi fields. This is a great book if you ever wondered why oil is abundant in some places, but non-existent in others.

              3 out of 5 stars A Tough Read Indeed!.......2007-03-16

This is obviously a well-researched book and perhaps even well-written, but it is a tough read indeed!

I bought this book in order to better understand "Hubbert's Peak" and the issue of oil and the impending oil shortage predicted by so many analyst.

The author does a very good job of explaining Hubbert's peak - in the first chapter of the book no less. But after that it was rough sailing and I found my interesting waning as Deffeyes discussed oil traps, drilling methods, and rate plots.

So I ended up skimming those chapters and jumping to the portion of the book dealing with the future of fossil fuels, alternative energy sources and a new outlook. Unfortunately, the pickings were a bit slim, with the author devoting only 16 of the books 189 pages to these topics.

There are probably better books out there for the layman interested in learning about the world's impending oil crisis.

              4 out of 5 stars A tough read but a worthwhile one.......2006-08-14

Hubbert's Peak: The Impending World Oil Shortage is not an easy read, but it is an important one if you really want to understand why some knowledgable people are trying to warn us about the end of cheap oil. The author, Kenneth Deffeyes, is thoroughly grounded in his material on both the academic and the professional level, having literally grown up in the oil field, worked for some of the largest oil companies in the world, and having taught at Princeton University. He also has the more unique qualification of having actually studied under and worked with M. King Hubbert himself. The problem with his book, however, is that it is written as if presuming that the reader already has some background in both geology and statistics. At less than 200 pages, it is not a particularly long book, but it is rather dense in places, leaving the reader frequently wishing he could interrupt the lecture and ask questions before moving on.

That said, there is much to be gained from reading this book, even if you only truly absorb a quarter of what is being said. Deffeyes goes into great detail on why oil is found where it is and on the history of oil exploration and production, but most significantly he shows how it is possible these days to know whether there is or isn't oil to be found in a given area and why today there is only one area left in the world where a significant oil field could still be found (the South China Sea). And why, even if found, would not be enough to postpone the day of reckoning for more than a few years.

He also goes into detail showing how Hubbert made his uncannily accurate projection of when US domestic oil production would peak (in 1956, Hubbert projected that US production would peak in 1972 -- the actual peak year turned out to be 1970) and of how this method has been used to project when world oil production would peak (2003). This is where a knowledge of statistics comes into play, and one wishes that the editors had urged him towards some further clarifications for the lay readers. But nonetheless, you can still see how the projections have been made and the supporting evidence for why they need to be taken seriously.

This book was published in 2001. The peak year projected in the book for world oil production was 2003. It is worth noting that the cost of oil has more than doubled since that projected peak year. Deffeyes' most compelling warning about our situation comes at the end of chapter seven: "This much is certain: no initiative put in place starting today can have a substantial effect on the peak production year. No Caspian Sea exploration, no drilling in the South China Sea, no SUV replacements, no renewable energy projects can be brought on at a sufficient rate to avoid a bidding war for the remaining oil. At least, let's hope that the war is waged with cash instead of with nuclear warheads."

1 out of 5 stars Erroneous from the Very First Sentence.......2006-07-17

If the reader knew absolutely nothing about oil production and read this book, then he or she would believe his claim that global production of crude oil will decline permanently in the very near future. Deffeyes takes his cue from price fluctuations, and I, knowing nothing about petroleum exploration and refining and hearing a lot about 'Peak Oil' (made popular by such conspiratorial tomes as The Grand Chessboard, The Party's Over and Crossing the Rubicon), keep hearing that little statistician's nagging voice in my head, saying:

Could there be some other explanation for the price fluctuations?

We have seen this sort of thing before, folks, and we have covered this terrain before. Whether the subject is the population bomb or the direction of stock prices, the drama is always the same: someone, usually an academic, grabs the media spotlight with dire prognostications emanating from his high-tech crystal ball (typically some mathematical formula or computer model bearing the illusion of precision), and predicts doom on the horizon if we do not change course and adopt his (typically totalitarian) prescription for renewed prosperity.

Unlike the endless parade of kooks past who have predicted The Demise of Civilization (or life as we know it), the author's claim to fame is three-fold: first, he has worked in the oil industry, and had the good (?) sense to abandon it for academia just before the first oil shock (consider the historical performance of the global petroleum industry over the last four decades to see just how sensible that decision was); second, he is a geologist, and tries to impress (or rather, bore) us with an endless recitation of arcane technical information on oil exploration; and third, the coup de grace- he actually worked with the infamous M. King Hubbert. All of these things are supposed to make his pitch both credible and ring true, and I guess for those who do not like to think too deeply about things, his position really does overflow with truth and credibility.

Since I (nor anyone else) can not check the data he used to generate the estimates sprinkled liberally throughout the book for their truthfullness, that alone sends up red flags in my mind. These estimates form the basis for his dire conclusions, and the admittedly amateur scientist and statistician in me says that if those estimates are flawed, then so too are the conclusions flowing from them.

In reading this text, and others like it, I am constantly nagged by the following questions:

Did Hubbert predict that all oil production would decline, or did he really say something else? Oddly enough, Mr. Hubbert is long dead, so much the (in)famous Malthus, we can not consult him to hear what he has to say about things.

Could there be another explanation for the U.S. decline in oil production? Could that explanation, in fact, have little or nothing to do with the amount of oil in the ground?

Given that we have some idea of the situation with OPEC (and to some extent, the U.S.) with respect to production and consumption, what about the situation outside of these two regions- such as in the oceans or in the Arctic/Antartic?

If the oil supply trend globally is on the decline, why in the hell are we seeing the trend for fuel economy standards in automobiles on the decline?

Could there be some other explanation for the recent rising trend in oil prices- one having perhaps a little something to do with causes firmly rooted in a history of misguided economic and foreign policy?

The author contends that poor countries will suffer the most under the scenario of world oil shortage because poor countries need energy to run the irrigation pumps necessary to produce food to feed themselves. Granted, fuels from petroleum are one possible energy source, but there are others. Ever hear of natural gas? Since most of the poor countries also have abundant renewable resources (Brazil for example has both hydro and solar resources, as well as biomass) why not use this?

I strongly suspect (but can not prove with any certainty) that pricing problems we see today may have something to do with the sort of oil that we could produce versus the kind of oil we would ideally like to use, which incidentally OPEC has a lock on. I also suspect that maybe domestic oil production has declined not because of Hubbert's Peak but rather, much like the decline of US domestic forestry, it costs less to import the kind of crude we like than it would to produce it domestically.

In sum, this book runs on par with other erroneous Apocalyptic tomes that depend on numerical tricks, intellectual sleights of hand, strangely hidden sources and data sets, illusions of precision and rigid certainty, such as those produced by Bjorn Lomborg, Lester Brown and Stephen Moore. Readers looking for a bit more insight into the crude oil pricing problem, albeit in a historical context, would do well to consult Robert Stobaugh's and Daniel Yergin's eerily prophetic book Energy Future.

                    Book Description

A classic overview of the science of complexity from the prestigious Santa Fe Institute.

There has been a remarkable growth in collaborative academic research focused on complexity in recent years. One of the greatest challenges is to discover which features are essential and which shared by all the seemingly disparate systems that are described as complex. This book describes current views on this subject held by various eminent scholars associated with the Santa Fe Institute, including Murray Gell-Mann, Brian Arthur, Stuart Kauffman, John Holland, and Kenneth Arrow.

This is groundbreaking (and clearly very controversial) work. Read the review below: this stuff gets a rise out of people. Anyone wanting to become familiar with original, seminal studies from the complexity science movement will want this book.

                    2 out of 5 stars I laughed, I cried..........2002-04-07

Well...where to begin without going further back?

This book is a compendium of papers, most from members of the Sante Fe institute. That is, the papers are by the self-proclaimed "experts" in the field of complex adaptive systems (complexity as it is termed by some). Although published in 1999 it is mostly out of date as a reference but it stands as testament to something I think is more interesting than pure science.

What we have here is a prime example of how dogma (religion) begins and sadly, impedes any chance for progress. At this point, perhaps I should suggest that anyone reading this who hasn't heard of Kuhn, Wittgenstein and Prigogine to go and read a bit. And then you need to understand that we have completed the whole genome-mapping fiasco and "discovered" something that goes against what the high gods of complexity, genetics and evolution have been preaching: we don't have more than 100,000 genomes we have 30,000.

Ok, now back to the book. The papers, as I stated, are out of date. All interesting results here are tied back to the "magic" number of 100,000 genomes. That is simply due to the fact that according to the diverstity of cells and specific proteins in our bodies combined with present theories we need that many. So one would think, right away, that any new theory that is "more correct" than the old ones would quickly point out this large discrepancy.

Well, no one did find this. Instead they just muddle around withsome nifty math and even more exciting computer simulations and then settle back to make pronouncements. And what bombastic statements the high priests of complexity pronounced! The best part of this book are the transcripts of discussions about the papers from the big names, notably Gell-Mann, Anderson and Kauffman.

One would think that a bit of reading in philosophy would really have helped this lot to see beyond their noses. That is, how can there be a "true science" (uttered by one during a discussion) when science is simply a compression of knowledge and the whole idea of "truth" implies more compression? This is laughable when your own theory says that you can never tell if something is optimally compressed (just read Chaitin and Kolmogorov); I ask again, how do you know you have a "true science"?

Yes, egos are rampant here and it is enough to make you alternately laugh and then cry now that we see how far off the mark the "science" is. There are slights on Freeman but really, Freeman has more "science" ("theory that matches observation" to quote Gell-Mann) than anyone in this collection. In fact, Anna Wise has more science in her books about brainwaves than this group.

Disappointed? You bet. I fail to see how winners of Nobel prizes and "Genius" awards could end up being so far off the mark. So in the end, I can only rate the intended content (science) as "2 stars" but the high comedy and drama make the historical content worth 5 out of 5. Enjoy it for that only!
