SIMPLIFY YOUR WORK LIFE: WAYS TO CHANGE THE WAY YOU WORK SO YOU HAVE MORE TIME TO LIVE

Now that Elaine St. James has helped readers simplify their homes, closets, and holidays, she shares her expert advice on simplifying the workplace. St. James points out that most of the conveniences Americans rely upon to make work easier--such as fax machines, e-mail, and cell phones--really make it "easier to do more work" at any time of day or night. As a result, the 40-hour workweek is a distant memory. "American workers could learn a lot from the European workplace," she writes. "In most European countries, the 32 hour work week is mandated by law."How is it possible to be like the Europeans and still get the job done? This is where St. James gets specific. At first she asks readers to set firmer boundaries between work and home. She makes seemingly radical suggestions, such as "stop working weekends," "add one day to your vacation" (to allow for transition time), and "eliminate your commute." She also offers on-the-job advice, such as "be selective in giving out your e-mail [address]" (to eliminate distracting messages) and "double your estimate" ("face it, things always take twice as long to complete as you think"). Ultimately, she suggests ways to be more efficient spenders in order to have more flexibility (which results in saner and more meaningful work). This Queen of Simplification may seem simplistic to her detractors, but her advice-packed books really do get results. --Gail Hudson

With tremendously helpful advice and easy yet profoundly smart suggestions;she shows us big and small ways to scale down and simplify life on the job, such as:; Break the habit of bringing work home from the office; Always estimate the time it will take to complete a project, then double the estimate; Cut back on the amount of time you spend working; How to make the right decisions quickly; How to minimize paper glut; Let your callers know what your work hours are and stick to them; How to make it easier to return to work after your vacation; Ways to enhance your energy so you can get more done in less time and leave work early, and much, much, more Highlighting such high-tech;conveniences; as the cell phone, e-mail, fax machine, and time management systems, she helps readers understand the difference between making work easier and making it easier to do more work. Elaine explains not only how to change the way we work, but how to change the way we think about work. Written in the same upbeat, relaxed, and matter-of-fact tone that won millions of readers to the simplicity movement, Simplify Your Work Life is certain to attract even more followers as it shows how work can be fulfilling and challenging without taking over one's life.Customer Reviews:
An Easy-to-Carry Reminder to Focus on What Matters Most.......2007-09-07

Some New Ideas.......2003-11-07
Some great ideas, but a little biased.......2002-11-26
My only complaint about the book is that it seems biased towards salaried professionals who work in offices. Her suggestions about reducing your work time, taking more breaks, etc., aren't relevant to hourly wage workers who HAVE to work a certain amount of hours or else get a cut in pay. Those same workers also can't take breaks whenever they want to. A lot of her examples revolve around people who have their own businesses (much like herself). Of course THEY can manage their own time--they're their own boss!
Even so, a lot of the other tips she gives can be applied to everyone. Whether you need ways to find more time for yourself or need to reduce the stress in your life, this is the book for you! Easy to read and to the point.
Another great book by the St. James!.......2001-10-16
For example, there were these thought-provoking passages:
One way to seize time is to get into the habit of taking
five minutes at the end of your day to clean up your space
and get organized for the next day's work. Even if you're
in the middle of a project you want to continue with the
next day, you'll find it helpful to straighten up your paper
and files and put away books, folders, notes, and other
materials for which you don't have an immediate need.
One of the most important steps you can take to
reduce the pressure you put on yourself is to avoid
making promises you can't keep that will throw the rest of your
life out of balance. So if your boss asks when you expect to have
a particular project completed, never, ever answer on the spot.
Always respond with "Let me figure it out and I'll get back to
you." Then actually take the time to realistically estimate,
given your other duties, when you could have the project
completed. Then double that estimate.
One of the main concerns Marie had when she was trying
to decide whether to take the leap and go for her doctorate
was that she was too old. I pointed out that I hadn't written
my first book until I was forty-five. Julia child didn't make her
first television appearance until she was fifty-five. Thomas
Edison didn't discover electricity until he was fifty-nine.
Eleanor Roosevelt didn't become a delegate to the United
Nations until she was sixty. And, as it turned out, Marie's
own husband, Joe, didn't do his most creative engineering
until he was sixty-two.

If you want to buy an overview or basics book on home buying I sugget the "Unofficial Guide to Buying a Home" which is much more detailed and straightforward about buying a home. And it covers in better details what are the pitfalls of buying a bargain home.
A good read for those searching for discounted real estate........2002-01-15
Concise and easy to read.......2001-12-02
There are helpful checklists and nuggets of suggestions that should help anyone wanting to buy a house or an investment such as Exhibit 1 showing how prices tend to change according to the season and the General Checklist to apply to any property you are considering buying. There are addresses for all the Hud offices in the US. There are tables to calculate mortgage payments based on the interest rate and there is an excellent explaination of the foreclosure process.
This a nugget of a book written in an extrememly readable and digestable manner. It may be a little too basic for experienced real estate investors but it is perfect for those just starting to learn the subject. I wish I had this book when I bought my first house and anyone facing foreclosure could benefit from reading it as well to understand the process.

First published in London in 1679 and translated into English in 1722, Lord Harwicke described it as of "unquestionable credit." Hall's translation, the best to that date, incorporated materials from manuscripts unavailable previously. In addition, he added a history of Anglo-American admiralty law, an extended discussion of American admiralty practice and a useful compendium of relevant cases. Hall [1783-1829] was editor of The American Law Journal from 1808-1817.

Chlorophyll a Fluorescence : A Signature of Photosynthesis (Advances in Photosynthesis and Respiration) (Advances in Photosynthesis and Respiration)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 140203217X |
Product Description
Chlorophyll a Fluorescence: A Signature of Photosynthesis highlights chlorophyll (Chl) a fluorescence as a convenient, non-invasive, highly sensitive, rapid and quantitative probe of oxygenic photosynthesis. Thirty-one chapters, authored by 58 international experts, provide a solid foundation of the basic theory, as well as of the application of the rich information contained in the Chl a fluorescence signal as it relates to photosynthesis and plant productivity. Although the primary photochemical reactions of photosynthesis are highly efficient, a small fraction of absorbed photons escapes as Chl fluorescence, and this fraction varies with metabolic state, providing a basis for monitoring quantitatively various processes of photosynthesis. The book explains the mechanisms with which plants defend themselves against environmental stresses (excessive light, extreme temperatures, drought, hyper-osmolarity, heavy metals and UV). It also includes discussion on fluorescence imaging of leaves and cells and the remote sensing of Chl fluorescence from terrestrial, airborne, and satellite bases. The book is intended for use by graduate students, beginning researchers and advanced undergraduates in the areas of integrative plant biology, cellular and molecular biology, plant biology, biochemistry, biophysics, plant physiology, global ecology and agriculture.

Current Ornithology, Volume 9 (Current Ornithology)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0306439905 |
Book Description
Contributors to this volume offer new research on extinction processes in birds, nest predation, and song systems, and describes a graphical model that helps predict the reproductive consequences of time allocation between the competing demands of guarding young birds and foraging for food. Current Ornithology is the only English-language publication currently devoted exclusively to extensive reviews and synthesis of topics pertaining to all aspects of the biology of birds. Chapters fall under such diverse rubrics as ecology, evolution, behavior, phylogeny, behavioral ecology, anatomy and physiology, and conservation biology. All authors are leading authorities on their subjects, and each chapter is refereed by experts in the topics covered. Although all chapters focus primarily on birds, some topics, such as the social cognition of birds as compared to primates (Volume 13), have significant application to disciplines outside of ornithology. Current Ornithology aims to provide an accessible, up-to-date, accurate source of data and to contribute to conceptual generalization and unification across the biological sciences.

Rubber and Rubber Balloons: Paradigms of Thermodynamics (Lecture Notes in Physics)
Ingo Müller , and Peter Strehlow Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540202447 |
Book Description
Experiments with rubber balloons and rubber sheets have led to surprising observations, some of them hitherto unknown or not previously described in the literature. In balloons, these phenomena are due to the non-monotonic pressure-radius characteristic which makes balloons a subject of interest to physicists engaged in stability studies. Here is a situation in which symmetry breaking and hysteresis may be studied analytically, because the stress-stretch relations of rubber - and its non-convex free energy - can be determined explicitly from the kinetic theory of rubber and from non-linear elasticity. Since rubber elasticity and the elasticity of gases are both entropy-induced, a rubber balloon represents a compromise between the entropic tendency of a gas to expand and the entropic tendency of rubber to contract. Thus rubber and rubber balloons furnish instructive paradigms of thermodynamics. This monograph treats the subject at a level appropriate for post-graduate studies.
