I've had this book for several years and I'm still fond of carrying it with me on weeks where there is a lot happening in my 12 year old firm. What's particularly nice is the fact that St. James has such small smippets that I can quickly read and easily digest--one at a time.

Geared toward executive professions.......2004-08-25

When the author states she feels "healthy, wealthy, happy and fantastic," it is obvious that the assumption here is that there are plenty of funds to cover the basic necessities -- food, shelter, and medical care at her house.

Most of the tips are basic ones such as "handling mail only once;write checks immediately." The assumption is that we all have the financial ability to do that. Another assmption is that we are all in control of our workdays. No advice or acknowledgement of any sort is offered up for those of us who cannot cut back or quit work.

I found the advice of rationing family members one towel and one wash cloth laughable and what one would expect if living in an institution, not in one's home.

These tapes contain some good advice and are very helpful for those persons who already enjoying a good income. However, for those living from pay day to pay day, these tapes will have little benefit.

This book has enough "new" ideas and presents them in an excellent fashion, so it warrants a five-star rating. It is a quick read and easy to incorporate immediately.

Some great ideas, but a little biased.......2002-11-26

Everyone working in America today should read "Simplify Your Work Life." People in the U.S. work way too much--and for what? Work is important, but it shouldn't be the only thing you do with your life. Elaine St. James offers simple suggestions to eliminate unnecessary work and stress from our lives. It's sad that our culture today thinks that people who work under 40 hours a week are "lazy". St. James tells us this is not true, and we can get as much work done working under 40 hours a week as working 60 hours a week, if only we learned how to manage our time better. People can get overwhelmed with our modern work society (with email, faxes, internet, etc.), but St. James says it doesn't have to be this way.

My only complaint about the book is that it seems biased towards salaried professionals who work in offices. Her suggestions about reducing your work time, taking more breaks, etc., aren't relevant to hourly wage workers who HAVE to work a certain amount of hours or else get a cut in pay. Those same workers also can't take breaks whenever they want to. A lot of her examples revolve around people who have their own businesses (much like herself). Of course THEY can manage their own time--they're their own boss!

Even so, a lot of the other tips she gives can be applied to everyone. Whether you need ways to find more time for yourself or need to reduce the stress in your life, this is the book for you! Easy to read and to the point.

Having read or heard other books by Elaine St. James (SIMPLIFY
YOUR LIFE, INNER SIMPLICITY, etc.), I found myself looking
forward to reading her latest: SIMPLY YOUR WORK LIFE . . . I
was not disappointed in it, and you won't be either--even if you
have not read anything else by the author . . . she presents
both big and small ways to scale down and simplify life on
the job . . . in doing so, she will help you understand the
difference between making work easier and making it
easier to do more work.

For example, there were these thought-provoking passages:
One way to seize time is to get into the habit of taking
five minutes at the end of your day to clean up your space
and get organized for the next day's work. Even if you're
in the middle of a project you want to continue with the
next day, you'll find it helpful to straighten up your paper
and files and put away books, folders, notes, and other
materials for which you don't have an immediate need.

One of the most important steps you can take to
reduce the pressure you put on yourself is to avoid
making promises you can't keep that will throw the rest of your
life out of balance. So if your boss asks when you expect to have
a particular project completed, never, ever answer on the spot.
Always respond with "Let me figure it out and I'll get back to
you." Then actually take the time to realistically estimate,
given your other duties, when you could have the project
completed. Then double that estimate.

One of the main concerns Marie had when she was trying
to decide whether to take the leap and go for her doctorate
was that she was too old. I pointed out that I hadn't written
my first book until I was forty-five. Julia child didn't make her
first television appearance until she was fifty-five. Thomas
Edison didn't discover electricity until he was fifty-nine.
Eleanor Roosevelt didn't become a delegate to the United
Nations until she was sixty. And, as it turned out, Marie's
own husband, Joe, didn't do his most creative engineering
until he was sixty-two.

This book is so general that you will not learn how to do anything. You will learn the lingo and basic description of auctions and forclosures but it does not go into depth about anything specific. If you have any specific questions and/or research topics this is not the book. If you are completely clueless and never owned a house this is your book.

This book was extremely disappointing. It is too high level and superficial to provide any actionable information. It provides the same level of detail I'd expect from a magazine article, not a book.

Over simplified and short.......2002-10-02

I've read about 6 books on real estate bought from Amazon, and I have to say that this one is the most oversimplified. It is like reading one of those "pocket MBA" books, which just tells you terms and procedures. Don't expect to read this book and be able to transact "foreclosed and bargain homes". It is far from that! For instance, the chapters on how to identify and find a "bargain" home comes down to this: look it up at a bank, MLS, or internet. Heck! I could have told you that for free! Given that that is the most important step, I was really disappointed with this book. Don't waste your money...

If you want to buy an overview or basics book on home buying I sugget the "Unofficial Guide to Buying a Home" which is much more detailed and straightforward about buying a home. And it covers in better details what are the pitfalls of buying a bargain home.

A good read for those searching for discounted real estate........2002-01-15

I got this book because I became disenchanted with attempting to purchase real estate through tax liens and was searching for a better way. What I have found by reading this book is that it is possible to purchase real estate at a discount if one is willing to do the leg work.
The authors do a good job defining bargain homes, dicussing strategies on getting the best price and locating repossessed homes. Also the book has a useful glossary, helpful checklist and locations of Hud and VA offices around the country.

Concise and easy to read.......2001-12-02

This book is wonderful for the novice trying to learn about the business of investing in real estate. There is not a wasted word in this book and each chapter is only 2-3 pages long so it can be read inbetween commericals during a movie. I read over half the book during one movie.

There are helpful checklists and nuggets of suggestions that should help anyone wanting to buy a house or an investment such as Exhibit 1 showing how prices tend to change according to the season and the General Checklist to apply to any property you are considering buying. There are addresses for all the Hud offices in the US. There are tables to calculate mortgage payments based on the interest rate and there is an excellent explaination of the foreclosure process.

This a nugget of a book written in an extrememly readable and digestable manner. It may be a little too basic for experienced real estate investors but it is perfect for those just starting to learn the subject. I wish I had this book when I bought my first house and anyone facing foreclosure could benefit from reading it as well to understand the process.

Excellent pocket sized guide.......2000-04-17

This is an excellent book on buying foreclosed homes. It is a basic guide and serves its purpose very well for the money. I've spent considerably more money on similar but larger books that were not as well written or informational. Provides checklists, contacts, glossary, payment tables, and 44 two page chapters or "keys" to buying foreclosed homes. The authors did not waste space, making this a little book that packs a big punch. It is very basic but provides a good foundation of information.

I reccomend that the best way for studying for the regents is taking practice tests after practice tests. You soon to being to basically memorize the questions on it. I got a 98 on the regents and tauight myself the whole course.

Time to hit the books!.......2002-04-13

This book is good because it gives you many example problems that really were on the Regents and many of the problems appear again and again just with different numbers. It was very helpful and after doing all the problems and self-correcting myslef and then see why I got the answers wrong (or even right) by the explanation section, it was worth the time and money to get this book. It is a tool that will help you get through your studing in a great way.

Barron's Regents Exams and Answers : Earth Science is one of the most valuable tools in studying for the New York state regents exam in Earth Science. It has many of the past regents to practice from, answers explained, and tips for when you take the regents. In the answers explained section it will tell you why the answer is right and even why other answers are wrong! I got a 95 on the regents with the help of this book. If you are taking Earth Science I would highly recommend that you get this book.

It's pretty good.......2003-06-16

I don't own this book but my friend does, and it's wonderful to have all the practice regents. Usually the questions on past regents are very similar to the one you're going to take. The only thing about this book is that the past regents can also be found on the internet site [...]. So you have a lot of the same things on that site, for free. Though the worthwhile thing about the Barron's book is that it has the "answers explained" section. So I would probably recommend buying it. I'm taking the Earth Science Regents in four days and I'm pretty confident about it, thanks to my wonderful teacher and the practice I had taking past regents.

Good study guide!.......1999-04-16

I am one of like the 60% who failed the Earth Science Regents exam in New York City in June of 1998. While the test and my teacher were impossible, I do believe that the 53% of what I got right came from the power pack. And when I didn't follow a teacher's method of using the books and thoroughly studied them properly, it helped me pass the exam in January of 1999. The Earth Science regents has gone from one of the easiest to THE hardest of the NY Regents Exams and this pack has helped me and many of my friends pass the exam. The blue book particularly is very helpful. So pick this up if you're having trouble or want to improve your skills.

Essential Review Book for all Earth Science Classs.......2000-08-06

Reviewing Earth Science: The Physical Setting by Thomas McGuire is an excellent, comprehensive review book that helps students learn and understand the new New York State Earth Science Curriculum. I find it an invaluable resource to my students and myself. The units are well written and include recent scientific ideas. The graphics and illustrations are clear, insightful, and meaningful. The questions are asked in such a way as to reflect many different thinking levels (basic knowledge, application and interpreting). The extensive use of sample test items help students evaluate and show their comprehension. Mr. McGuire's several editions of this book provide excellent insights into New York's challenging and stimulating Regents Earth Science program. In fact, my school and others use this book as an expandable text. I have been using the older version of "Reviewing Earth Science" by Thomas McGuire for the last 10 years and find it an irreplaceable and essential book. This new review book correlates directly with the new New York State Physical Setting : Earth Science Curriculum. I think teachers embarking on this new adventure are advised to use this book as a key resource throughout the year.

Teacher recommends this the best........2000-07-25

As a teacher of NYS earth science, I feel this is the best resource for a teacher and student preparing for the Earth Science Regents. It takes each chapter and breaks it into little pieces, then follows each "lesson" with practice regents questions. Earth Science should be studied in short sessions frequently. This book accomodates this style of learning/studying, which is necessary for academic achievment in Earth Science. Buy this book before the other regents reviews out there. You wont regret it. I use it as my primary text through the school year.

As a student of Regents Earth Science, I highly reccomend this book for studying. This challenging subject is very well explained in this publication, and not only tells you the facts, but makes you understand them. For students who are taking the Regents, it gives sample questions from previous exams in order to help prepare the reader for the test. I think this is a really good book to study earth science from.

I am a student of Mr. McGuire's in Briarcliff New York. He is an extrodinary teacher, and his review book makes classes a lot easier than they would be otherwise.

Mr. McGuire's REVIEW BOOK is useful in any Earth Science situation from Middle/Junior High School, through High School and through introductory courses in college. The topics included are well covered and the detail is accurate and useful. I have used this book (or earlier editions)with my students for more than 10 years and it is one they head for first when they need immediate answers or are just beginning to do research.

Book Description

Experiments with rubber balloons and rubber sheets have led to surprising observations, some of them hitherto unknown or not previously described in the literature. In balloons, these phenomena are due to the non-monotonic pressure-radius characteristic which makes balloons a subject of interest to physicists engaged in stability studies. Here is a situation in which symmetry breaking and hysteresis may be studied analytically, because the stress-stretch relations of rubber - and its non-convex free energy - can be determined explicitly from the kinetic theory of rubber and from non-linear elasticity. Since rubber elasticity and the elasticity of gases are both entropy-induced, a rubber balloon represents a compromise between the entropic tendency of a gas to expand and the entropic tendency of rubber to contract. Thus rubber and rubber balloons furnish instructive paradigms of thermodynamics. This monograph treats the subject at a level appropriate for post-graduate studies.
