Book Description

In the irreverent and entertaining tradition of Liar's Poker, Peter Robinson's Snapshots from Hell is a hilarious and enlightening insider's answer to the paramount question every prospective student asks: what is business school really like?During his first frenetic year at Stanford Business School, Peter Robinson began keeping a journal of his day-to-day impressions which evolved into this book, the writing of which he came to see as a "simple act of decency, like going back to the last calm bend in the river and nailing up a sign that reads Waterfall Ahead'."From his first harrowing days at "maths camp" through the dizzying phalanx of core courses, the frenzy of exam week, the pitfalls and triumphs of the interview process (including a surreal interview with Robert Maxwell!) to being wind and dined by some of the most prestigious companies in the world, Robinson's story is witty, candid and peopled with a remarkable cast of characters. A must read for all aspirational "Masters of the Universe" as well as MBAers, Snapshots from Hell is a fast-paced, first-hand account of the nightmare world of getting a top business school MBA, one of the glittering prizes of the 90s.

If you are considering an MBA, read this to know what to expect. If you have an MBA, read this for nostalgia and laughs.

5 out of 5 stars This book was spot on.......2007-05-05

This book was great. With the exception of having prior business experience, Snapshots was 99% accurate to what my MBA experience has been like. I'm finishing up my first year at Top-20 B-School on the East Coast and Snapshots was like a play-by-play of what I've been through. I've read some of the other reviews trashing the book (the Med School guy for instance) and I think they're taking it a little too seriously. The author uses "poets" so he doesn't have to keep repeating "those of us without prior business experience". And in real life, you do notice differences between those who HAD prior business experience and those who didn't. I didn't pick up any strong political overtones in the book so again, the Med School guy needs to relax. I also didn't think Snapshots was written to be overly dramatic and engage the Med and Law school types in a pissing contest over whos gradschool program is the toughest. This book gives an honest account for what your first-year of business school will be like and I've recommended it to all my friends considering that path.

2 out of 5 stars A political manifesto.......2007-03-16

I couldn't finish this book. There were several issues that led me to toss it by the middle of the book:

1) The author must use the word "Poet" at least three or four time PER PAGE. Ok. We get it. You were considered a Poet. Get over it. Stop using that as an excuse as to why you didn't seem to understand one lousy math concept.

2) The book is highly over-dramatized. Either this guy has the IQ of a Rhesus monkey, or he tried to make it sound a lot harder than it was. I'm a physician - and I'm pretty sure that medical school is harder than business school - and I didn't have near the "harrowing experience" this guy did.

3) I was looking for a book about what an MBA program is like - not a thinly disguised political ad. Being that this guy was a speech writer for Reagan and Bush #1, I should have known to expect some conservative drivel. What I didn't expect was several passages referring to "leftists", "liberals", "hippies", and the like. The passages are spread out throughout the book (as much as I read of it), but there is NO POINT to them. They add absolutely nothing to the story, and appear to be thrown in there just to make sure that we know the author disapproves of non-conservatives.

In the end, it was the political bias that drove me to stop reading. The book was mediocre, at best, to begin with, and the neo-conservative ravings put the nail in the coffin.

If you are a proud Republican, you may find this book to be alright. If you are an independent or Democrat, though, I would recommend you skip this one unless you enjoy being insulted.

3 out of 5 stars alternative view.......2006-04-19

The book is nice in that it provides a nice alternative view to the MBA experience. The names and experiences in this book have been changed (to protect the guilty?) and it seems to lose something in the translation however.

I would recommend this book to people who are still on the fence about an MBA or are soon to begin an MBA program. It provides a nice breakdown of the characters, personalities and egos you are likely to encounter at a top MBA program.

4 out of 5 stars A Poet's View.......2006-04-11

Peter Robinson's Stanford GSB stories describe his first year experience as a graduate business student. His personal enjoyable and educational accounts, "snapshots" if you will, about why he went to business school and the challenges a non-businessman type faces are well written. The book refers to students who are not from business-geek backgrounds, people with literary or artisit tilts, as "poets." Inspired by a 1L, a novel on a student's first year at law school, Snapshots from Hell is a quick read and covers both his personal and professional experiences at Stanford. The emphasis on mathematics, a field Peter did not study in college or use in his professional work, made his educational experience challenging and "hellish." His speechwriter turned businessman view is easy to see, though many of the observations about what professors and employers expect of students feel outdated and stuck in the 80's. The personal stories regarding his experience and interaction with others, however, are compelling enough to interest and entertain a reader.

Book Description

In the constantly evolving hedge fund marketplace, nothing is more central?but in many ways, more amorphous and elusive?than risk. Yet there remains no standard for analyzing and measuring risk within this highly secretive, largely unregulated field, leaving the thousands of hedge funds?and the tens of thousands of hedge fund investors?in dangerously dim light. Hedge Fund Risk Fundamentals is the first book to bring these issues to the forefront. With clarity, concision, and minimal math, Richard Horwitz lays out the key components and the cutting-edge processes in the field of hedge fund risk management today. Against that backdrop he presents a groundbreaking utility destined to set the standard for transparency and risk management within the hedge fund universe.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!.......2004-12-22

Hedge funds are complex, risky investment vehicles. Other funds, such as most equity mutual funds, have straightforward investment strategies. By contrast, equity-oriented hedge funds may engage in various trading practices and investment strategies. They may be short funds, long-short funds or market neutral funds. And equity-oriented hedge funds are only a small sliver of the hedge fund universe. Thus, assessing the risk of hedge funds is a challenge. In language intelligible to most lay readers, author Richard Horwitz lays out the issues to consider when evaluating hedge fund risks. He has accomplished a great deal merely by writing this in readable prose, instead of in equations. He also explains his company's hedge fund risk measurement system. We believe every hedge fund manager and anyone who even thinks of investing in a hedge fund should read this book.

1 out of 5 stars A waste of time..and money.......2004-12-02

How can a risk manager in a hedge fund know so little about risk management? This book is the most simplistic -in the negative sense of the term- risk management book i have ever come accross. Unless you don't even know the most basic theories of risk management, do not waste you time reading this book. The most innovatice and only technical insight in this book is : 1 + 1 = 1.41, said differently: "don't put your eggs in the same basket". My grandma knew it already...and she died before hedge funds existed.
As for the transparency issue, no solutions are offered...just questions with no critical approach.

5 out of 5 stars A new look at hedge funds and risk.......2004-11-02

With the increasing universe of alternative investments, comes a more difficult and complicated task of selection for many sophisticated investors. From quantitative analysis to qualitative assessment, this book covers a full spectrum of topics. It offers an interesting perspective and methodology in breaking down risks associated with investing in these highly complex and opaque strategies. Where transparency has always been an issue, it's like a breath of fresh air to finally find a method that satisfies both the disclosure-hungry investor, and the secretive hedge fund. The platform offers a unique way of bucketing and aggregating risks into logical styles and factors, which ultimately strips away the need for full position-level transparency. The comprehensive and flexible system allows investors to take advantage of useful tools and measurements that will aid them in better assessing risks and managing their portfolios. Finally, a book written for the risk gurus of the hedge fund world.

            Book Description

Membrane Transport is targeted towards researchers with an interest in the mechanism of solute transport across biological membranes. Its scope is broad, ranging from the techniques required to study transport itself, through the expression, purification and reconstitution of transporters, to techniques for investigation of their structures. As such, it not only proves the necessary technical grounding for newcomers to the field, but should also be of value to "old-hands" wishing to get up to date with recent developments in these areas. While some of the approaches described require sophisticated equipment (e.g. a stopped-flow fluorimeter), most of the protocols can be implemented in any well- found laboratory. Preparation of this volume comes at a time when a result of genome sequencing our knowledge of membrane transporter sequences is far outstripping our understanding of their molecular mechanisms. Our hope is that this book will help future researchers to redress this imbalance.

                Book Description

Based on decades of research and written in clear, concise prose by one of the foremost geographers in North America, John C. Hudson's Across This Land is a comprehensive regional geography of the North American continent.

Clearly organized, the book divides the entire United States and Canada into six major regions, then further subdivides them into twelve smaller areas. Hudson emphasizes each region or area's distinguishing place-specific attributes, including -- to a larger degree than previous regional geographies -- political considerations. In this way, the book tells the story of each region, relying on a brisk narrative that reveals the dynamic processes of their distinctive characteristics.

The first extensive regional geography of the North American continent in over seventy-five years, Hudson's Across This Land will become the standard text in geography courses dealing with Canada and the U.S. as well as a popular reference work for scholars, students, and lay readers.

                        Book Description

This book aims to present an information-theoretical approach to thermodynamics and its generalisations. On the one hand, it generalises the concept of `information thermodynamics' to that of `information dynamics' in order to stress applications outside thermal phenomena. On the other hand, it is a synthesis of the dynamics of state change and the theory of complexity, which provide a common framework to treat both physical and nonphysical systems together. Both classical and quantum systems are discussed, and two appendices are included to explain principal definitions and some important aspects of the theory of Hilbert spaces and operator algebras. The concept of higher-order temperatures is explained and applied to biological and linguistic systems. The theory of open systems is presented in a new, much more general form.
Audience: This volume is intended mainly for theoretical and mathematical physicists, but also for mathematicians, experimental physicists, physical chemists, theoretical biologists, communication engineers, and all those interested in entropy and open systems. It can also be recommended as a supplementary text.

                          Book Description

This textbook is a thorough introduction to classical theoretical physics. While concise in its use of terminology, the book is intended nonetheless to provide the means to understand all the fundamentals of this field. Worked examples throughout the text and 39 problems help the student to become familiar with the physics presented here. In order to avoid any bias, statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics are discussed in addition to classical mechanics and electrodynamics. After careful study of the book the student will be familiar with a wide variety of fields from advanced theoretical physics or applied physics.

Gilbert's pride was terribly wounded, but his spirits rose a little later when he found that he would only have to wait twenty minutes in the Lowell station before a slow train for Greentown would pick him up, and that he should still reach his destination before bedtime, and need never disclose his stupidity.

I had to hunt this one down. I love the movie "Summer Magic" which was based on the book. I have rarely read a book so fast. It was so refreshing to read of another, less uptight era where neighbors cared about each other and happily gave of their time and means to help a family they had never met. The Carey's have a magical quality that is all their own, bringing joy to those around them. Mrs. Carey refers to her children as her chickens, thus the title. Mrs. Carey is the perfect mother, mixing love with her admonishing. And Nancy's high spirits are contagious. Compared to today's fiction, this may seem like a goody-goody-dreamworld-story, but it was a wonderful story. It made me wonder if such a world may really exist someday. It was so positive and edifying. I wish that Kate Douglas Wiggins had written a whole series about the Carey family.

5 out of 5 stars This is a "breath of fresh air" kind of book in a our world........1999-01-13

Kate Douglas Wiggin penned a wonderful piece of literature with an uncanny gift for providing serenity. It is an old-fashioned story about an old fashioned family. The Carey family faces seemingly insurmountable problems but persevere with dignity and grace. The characters are real, not goody, goody, but they possess an innate goodness that comes with careful parenting and being bred in a time of high moral standards. Perhaps it seems a bit whimsical to dream of such bygone ideals, but this book gives one hope of discovering them again.

The Disney movie "Summer Magic" is loosely based on this story. The story begins just after the father dies. Most everything is sold to pay for the family's debts leaving them very little to live on. The family moves to the little yellow house in Beulah, Maine where they have many adventures.
