Alex Lubarsky.......2001-03-27
I think that it is very funny that our lives have become so complicated that we need a book to teach us how to simplify it, but need it we do. Jan Jasper has put together what seemed like a million simple ideas on how to get through all the stuff that screems for our attention. To accomplish more, to enjoy our life more, to do the things that are important to us, we must purge all the time wasters. "Take back your time" gave me a view from a different angle so that I can make a choice on what to keep and what to purge. I am glad I bought it! P.S. For me "Think and grow rich", How to win friends, and influence people", The majic of thinking Big" are five star books. "Take back your time" is a strong four.
SUPER BOOK for the 2000's.......2000-12-22
This book does a great job focusing on today's concerns for people of the 2000's, especially urban-dwelling, business-types, with limited time, limited space, and a desire to prioritize their work and home environments. The practical, incremental solutions Ms. Jasper offers are things a reader can implement immediately. I've read this book twice already and intend to re-read it periodically to check-up on my progress in reducing stress and organizing my business and personal time. In the new e-world filled with 'Self-Help' books (and I've read a lot of them...) this is a fresh approach with current ideas. GREAT BOOK !!
Control your life as well as your time!.......2000-11-27
"Take Back Your Time" is an intelligent, easy-to-read, and helpful book for getting "unstuck". I had been stymied by the number of things on my "to-do" list -- important personal pet projects, desires to change old habits, business development ideas -- and Jasper's book provided the keen insight I needed to begin to dislodge my inertia! Jasper also made me aware that organizational skills do not equal efficient working skills -- a crucial distinction. I had check marks and notations on many of the pages of the book. I plan to lend it to my business partner, whose desk is one giant "In Box"!
The best investment I made this month!.......2000-10-30
Before I read this book, I thought I knew what my problem was. There was simply too much to do in too little time, and the situation was completely hopeless. After reading just three chapters of "Take Back Your Time," I had already gained an entirely different perspective. Applying Jasper's advice on setting priorities and weeding out time-consuming, unnecessary chores helped me regain several hours weekly. Now I actually have time for some of the fun things I'd totally given up on finding time for. Plus, at the office, I'm now able to meet my deadlines without compromising the quality of my work.
A functional tool for survival in the clutter jungle........2000-10-24
This is a rare treat. The book actually delivers what it promises. For those of us who find ourselves overwhelmed with daily clutter and are fighting an uphill battle to keep ahead of our increasingly formidable schedules, we are finally offered a workable set of solutions. If you follow the suggestions offered by Ms. Jasper there will come a point where you suddenly realize your life is not an accelerating treadmill. There is a real benefit to a publication which offers attainable goals and a real template for success.
Book Description
In The New Masters of Capital, Timothy J. Sinclair examines a key aspect of the global economythe rating agencies. In the global economy, trust is formalized in the daily operations of such firms as Moody's and Standard & Poor's, which continuously monitor the financial health of bond-issuers ranging from private corporations to local and national governments. Their judgments affect unimaginably large sums, approximately $30 trillion in outstanding debt issues, according to a recent Moody's estimate. The difference between an AA and a BB rating may cost millions of dollars in interest payments or determine if a corporation or government can even issue bonds
Without bond rating agencies, there would be no standard means to compare risks in the global economy, and international investment would be problematic. Most observers assume that the agencies are neutral and scientific, and that they interpret their role in narrowly economic terms. But these agencies, by their nature, wield extraordinary power and exert massive influence over public policy. Sinclair offers a highly accessible account of these institutions, their origins, and the rating processes they use to judge creditworthiness. Illustrated with a wide range of cases, this book offers a fresh assessment of the role of an often-overlooked institution in the dynamics of modern global capitalism.
Customer Reviews:
A solid introduction to the power of bond rating agencies.......2007-04-30
Few writers have closely examined the work of bond rating agencies - even though their decisions can move markets, open or close the doors to capital, and even bring down governments. Timothy J. Sinclair manages to keep his prose relatively accessible, despite his many references to research that could only appeal to academics. Although his detailed analysis of various sociological characterizations of agency power may be of little interest to the general reader, we believe that his main point - rating agencies exercise power and influence well beyond the bond markets - deserves careful consideration by anyone interested in economics, finance, politics or the issue of globalization.
An Important Read for Students of Political Economy!.......2006-07-16
It was exciting to see a book in political science about the bond markets, and even more interesting to see one attempting to fit into the constructivist international relations literature. At first glance, it seems ripe for such a theoretical exploration - analysis focuses on an ontological justification for focusing on the bond rating agencies and Sinclair offers theoretical tidbits from economic sociology to explain the political organization of markets in contrast with the Hayekian spontaneity view. Sinclair offers interesting arguments about bond rating agencies, the basis of their power, the structure of their authority, and the implications of their behavior for other actors including but not limited to sovereigns. The argument focuses on the social nature of finance which zeros the analyst on matters of uncertainty and risk. Interestingly, this provides a parallel to more recent rationalist approaches to economic life. Overall, the topic of the book intrigued me, particularly since the author discusses the process of disintermediation* - the larger structural economic change that opens up the space to be filled by bond rating behaviors in sovereign, municipal, and corporate fixed income markets.
Theoretically the author offers a discussion of what he considers "embedded knowledge networks" slightly similar to Haas-like epistemic communities but lacking the normative commitments to notions of the public good. Sinclair suggests that bond rating agencies need to construct their image as an "embedded knowledge network" and the growth of their role in financial markets as "endogenous" to integration of world markets. If these private authorities are not viewed by financial markets and debtors as legitimate, markets will not function in the manner typically desired - since what these social actors do according to Sinclair is socially embed the financial markets. Implicit in the argument is a Polayni double movement - however I did not find it easy to tease out from Sinclair's logic or language. As financial markets integrate across the world, there is some amount of disembedding of the market from its social base which can be reduced via the construction of private legitimated authority and the centralization of market processes by the bond rating agencies. The bond agencies utilize this legitimacy to structure the ground rules of the financial markets themselves. In a sense their is a coordination effect, which narrows the maneuvering room for current and potential market actors, and this "common understanding" of the norms within bond market practice stem from the rating standards and the very political decisions made by bond rating agencies. Therefore bond rating agencies survive on maintaining their reputation both for sound analysis and objectivity but legitmation crises sometimes occur and are particularly pronounced when their behavior expands into previously uncovered territory. This is all very interesting, but once we move beyond this basic argument Sinclair loses me a bit mainly because I think his case studies could be much tighter and directly intertwined with the arguments themselves. I wish the book spent more time cultivating and working with this side of the argument itself. I got the sense that Sinclair was rushed once he finished up the theoretical analysis.
My basic suggestion to those interested in the politics of bond markets is that you should take this to scrutinize the early theoretical arguments. The first three chapters are a treasure trove of interesting arguments that deserve to be taken in extension past where Sinclair goes, and possibly restated without some of the cumbersome post-modern jargon. Sinclair's detailed empirical research also will be a great starting point for anyone interested in following up in this research agenda. Some of the empirical findings support the arguments of the book, but fail Lakatosian notions of what makes good theory - there doesn't seem to be the focus on uncovering "new facts" the interesting type of dynamics that those familiar with the financial sector would not expect, particularly in regard to politics. The cases seem on occasion to be historical stand alones, and the methodology of "counter-factual" does not appear to be taken very seriously. On a number of occasions there are only short paragraphs at the end of sections posing the counter-factual, this is hardly rigorous in the manner we might expect if this is really a methodological approach. I would have been perfectly content without the almost silly homage paying to positivist concerns about lack of variation on the dependent variable, etc as long as the author is willing to express clearly what the implications of his methodological choices are. In fact the book would have probably been more convincing. As for the Lakotosian problem by way of example, it is not particularly enlightening to read the argument that short-term oriented thinking is spread by the bond-rating agencies in a process akin to market socialization. In fact it made me think of the Schumpeterian critique of capitalism and democracy as larger social processes so the argument could have been further tied into non-Sorel based literature bodies. While it is interesting in the context of the larger processes raised by Sinclair, alone it seems almost trivial. It might just be the case that I totally misunderstood Sinclair, especially since the language was more vague as this side of the argument cropped up. One other factor that disappointed me greatly was how little time was focused on the exclusive issue of sovereign bonds. This bias reflects my own research agenda, but for a piece on International Political Economy I expected more weight on the international side and less on say municipal government policy even though the arguments that Sinclair makes about state-market relations within the confines of so-called "state decline" and other globalization arguments were fascinating particularly at the sub-national level. Read it, but do not expect to be swept away by the empirical and theoretical conclusions. Nevertheless, Sinclair should be applauded for attempting a very difficult feet - applying sociological constructivist theory to financial markets. Surprisingly even though the logic of financial behavior begs for this kind of approach, especially given concerns about risk and reputation, I have not seen anyone come close to what Sinclair tried to do here, whether he was successful is a separate story, but at least we have a place to start. While logically the arguments seem to fit rather well, this is not something that scholars have been very willing to pay attention to, and the novelty of the project alone deservers credit.
* Disintermediation refers to the process by which the market has become increasingly saturated non bank oriented securities. For the case of sovereign debt, the most interesting phenomenon is the rise of the bond market and associated credit derivatives trade.

Book Description
One of the most complex parts of the Uruguay Round of GATT negotiations was the agricultural dossier. The European Communities' Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and EC-U.S. relations posed many of the difficult issues. Alan Swinbank and Carolyn Tanner give a compact, clear description and interpretation of the negotiations and the issues.
This Thames Essay reviews the history of agriculture in the GATT through the previous rounds of negotiation, provides a succinct overview of the present state of world agriculture, and summarizes the history and present state of the CAP. The next three chapters chart the stages by which the Uruguay Round moved to agreement and simultaneous evolution of the CAP. A thorough description of the agricultural elements in the last Uruguay Round agreement precedes a final chapter looking forward to the desirable features of future world agricultural trade agreements.
This will be a valuable source of information for agricultural economists, international trade economists working in governments, international organizations, financial institutions, and universities.
Alan Swinbank is Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Reading. Carolyn Tanner is Senior Lecturer in Agricultural Economics, University of Sydney.

Customer Reviews:
Very Informative.......2007-01-04
Coming from a purely Physics background, this book is great at explaining in simple English without sounding like it is talking to a complete idiot. I don't appreciate books that are condescending, and this one is not. Very good, well written, and highly recommended!
It is bible for understand NMR.......2006-11-10
It is a distinguished book for beginer to under stand NMR from theory to experiment step by step.
Good NMR text.......2004-10-05
This is an excellent text book written by a chemist. Author handles some of hardware stuff as well as physical chemistry of NMR based on quantum mechanics. This text provides us with clear pictures of NMR phenomena. Some detailed explanations about basic NMR pulse sequences are excellent for everybody who studies this field.
A must have for any aspiring NMR jockeys.......2004-01-18
For those studying biomolecules with NMR, the unofficial bible is of course the maroon colored Cavanagh book. Though this is an excellent book, it isn't the best suited book for beginners. This is where Levitt's book comes in: this is by far the kindest introduction to NMR that I have seen, with heavy emphasis on understanding the concepts first and the formalism later. The book is full of useful diagrams, detailed analogies, and exercises for the reader where other books only show equations. So borrows someone's Cavanagh first, and if you get stuck after 20 pages then order yourself a copy of Levitt and you won't be disappointed. If you already have studied NMR and are looking at how to apply it to proteins, then Cavanagh should suit you fine.
Clear first introduction to NMR.......2002-07-27
This book could simply be stated as an excellent attempt to introduce the foundations of NMR. It is a very good primer on all theoretical aspects that are essential to an understanding of the subject.
It offers a methodical, step-by-step approach. Useful tools and consistent terminology are the most attracting feature of this volume. It is well-illustrated; and controversial issues are highlighted in the "Notes" sections at the end of each chapter. It has illustrative problems at the end of each chapter, with solutions provided at the end.
Interestingly, the appendix covers many important aspects that are needed at a more advanced stage. Useful tools for the understanding of NMR are developed at appropriate stages. These include: the box notation for coherences, populations, density matrices and transitions; the origin of NMR spectra from individual coherence terms in the density matrix; origin of 2-D NMR signals as well as many important concepts in Fourier Transform NMR are described. The origins of relaxation enjoy a very readable and simplistic approach in the last chapter.
Whenever simplistic approximations are used, the author never claims of completeness or rigour. Distinction is made between terms that are physically correct and terms that are sometimes misleading, but enjoy widespread use in the NMR spectroscopy convention. The essential tools in quantum mechanics are outlined, product operator descriptions are used frequently and repetitively, that enhances understanding and provides more practice. Pictorial representations have been given where possible, a view-point beginners like myself find very useful.
One drawback, is a careful side-lining of the very important technique of using pulse-field gradients, although their cousin technique, named pulse-cycles is quite elaborately explained. I hope, the next issue of the book would also cover up this important technique.

Book Description
This book provides an introduction and guide to modern advances in charged particle (and antiparticle) confinement by electromagnetic fields. Confinement in different trap geometries, the influence of trap imperfections, classical and quantum mechanical description of the trapped particle motion, different methods of ion cooling to low temperatures, and non-neutral plasma properties (including Coulomb crystals) are the main subjects. They form the basis of such applications of charged particle traps as high-resolution optical and microwave spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, atomic clocks, and, potentially, quantum computing.

Book Description
Focus on the Family Great Stories are riveting novels from the past for today's readers. Each book features the complete text and, in convenient footnotes, present-day definitions for older words. They also include in-depth introductions that shed light on the authors and the times in which they lived and discussion questions.
In the dark, decadent last days of the Roman Empire, a pagan soldier sees a girl of exotic beauty and decides he must have her as his concubine. But unknown to him, Ligia is a Christian intent on living a pure life, even as Nero's ruthless persecution sweeps the city. As the lives of Vinicius and Ligia intertwine, they watch the world they know change before their eyes. While the apostles Peter and Paul seek to save the immoral city from ruin, Christians are brutally martyred in the Coliseum and Rome burns. Quo Vadis, part of Focus on the Family Great Stories collection, vividly captures all the madness and suspense of one of history's most unforgettable chapters.
Introduction and Afterword by Joe Wheeler
Customer Reviews:
Reads like a romance novel.......2002-05-24
This book reads a bit like a trashy romance novel. That is to say, it is a very easy read, the vocabulary is relatively simple, and the story gets you hooked from chapter to chapter. Not to mention it kind of _is_ a trashy romance novel. But on the other hand it does give one a nice picture of the first Christians and Rome in Nero's time. The characterization of Nero is especially funny. Not to mention it has a nice/happy ending so you feel all warm and fuzzy at the end in spite of all the nasty things that happen in between. (Hope that was not too much of a spoiler) All in all, an entertaining read, but don't expect big revelations.
Completely dependent on the translator........1999-11-22
There are some foreign language books, like the Odyssey, or the Three Musketeers, or perhaps Ibsen, that endure lingual translations, despite the incompetency of the translator. Quo Vadis is not one of those books. Some translations are terrible and flat, while others ring true with the lucidity of brilliant writing. The W.S. Kuniczak edition is probably the finest rendition currently available in English. However, if one is looking for a biblical work of fiction that truly inspires in English- try Ben-Hur, by Lew Wallace.
Gorgeous book- but stiff as a board and just as lifeless!.......1999-10-02
OK, I've tried to read "Quo Vadis" several times and... man, I just couldn't dig it!! The descriptions are nice enough, if you don't mind the wordy style of Victorian times, but what rubbed me wrong was how the Christians vs. pagans battle was portrayed. The Christians are dull and pretty stupid- almost intolerably goody goody, and *insipid*! The pagans are bad, but they're bad in an interesting way. Sure, they're going to hell in the end, but in the meantime, they're so dynamic and fun- and Nero can sure plan good orgies. Read the New Testament and you'll see the early Christians in there are almost anything but stupid, and certainly not dull! (I imagine St Pete himself was a pretty exciting cat to know.) I get the feeling old Henryk knew that he had to write in the 'Christians' as the heroes, but his heart wasn't really into it. He really knows how to describe a party, and all the superficiality it entails. But the Christians in this book- they're NOTHING like the truly spiritual people of my acquaintance. They come across like Victorian stage characters, posing in the accepted holy poses, having visions in the accepted style of visionaries. (Angels come out and lights abound; all the acceptable props, you know.) So, read "Quo Vadis" for the gorgeous detail and ornate dialogue, because I can't say it's not technically well done. But if you want something that gets into the heart of soul of a spiritual/religious quest, than you'd better go elsewhere.
The Absolute Best Book Ever!!!.......1999-03-18
This book is without question the greatest of the classics that I have ever read. Involving suspense, romance, death, and survival; it will lead you through one of greatest adventures of your life. I highly recommend it.
Very literary, a little melodramatic.......1999-01-22
but the melodrama is due to the time period (such passions) wonderfull descriptive phrases. I found myself wondering about the accuracy of the tale but my copy is not indexed. It reminds me of The Kingdom of the Wicked by Burgess but is softer and more consistent.
