It looks like a book. It feels like a book. It reads like a book. Is it a book? Yes, but The Bounce Back Quotient is more than a book. It's a tool.

This volume is a tool to guide the journey of anyone struggling to bounce back from any one of the millions of life experiences that can knock us down a peg or two. When you need some positive focus to pull yourself out of the doldrums and regain your wonderful productive strength, this book could be just the tool you need.

There's an old quote that is sometimes attributed to Zig Ziglar: "You don't have to be sick to get better." As I read this book, I thought about that perspective. The concepts presented by Linda Nash don't require the reader to be down in the dumps. Start from wherever you are and this guidebook will take you to greater heights.

We begin the book by taking an assessment. By scoring how true each of 52 statements is for us, we establish benchmarks from which to grow. Each of the statements is worded affirmatively, creating a positive and optimistic standard from the start. The scoring is explained, putting the process in perspective. The balance of the book consists of 52 small chapters with a restatement of the affirmation and a paragraph or two expanding on the one-sentence idea for improvement. Another paragraph or two offers some ideas of what we can do to strengthen that aspect of our nature, followed by space to take notes to personalize the growth experience.

I would have liked to see more discussion of each of Nash's 52 action ideas, but I can also see the value of the brief presentation style in this book. Looking for a helpful tool, a guidebook? Check it out? Looking for deeper explanation of how to reorient your life, spend a bit of time with The Bounce Back Quotient, but expect to have to do some more research, too.

A scandal hovers over the history of 20th century physics. Albert Einstein — the century's greatest physicist — was never able to come to terms with quantum mechanics, the century's greatest theoretical achievement. For physicists who routinely use both quantum laws and Einstein's ideas, this contradiction can be almost too embarrassing to dwell on. Yet Einstein was one of the founders of quantum physics and he spent many years preaching the quantum's importance and its revolutionary nature.

The Danish genius Neils Bohr was another founder of quantum physics. He had managed to solve one of the few physics problems that Einstein ever shied away from, linking quantum mathematics with a new model of the atom. This leap immediately yielded results that explained electron behavior and the periodic table of the elements.

Despite their mutual appreciation of the quantum's importance, these two giants of modern physics never agreed on the fundamentals of their work. In fact, they clashed repeatedly throughout the 1920s, arguing first over Einstein's theory of "light quanta" (photons), then over Niels Bohr's short-lived theory that denied the conservation of energy at the quantum level, and climactically over the new quantum mechanics that Bohr enthusiastically embraced and Einstein stubbornly defied.

This contest of visions stripped the scientific imagination naked. Einstein was a staunch realist, demanding to know the physical reasons behind physical events. At odds with this approach was Bohr's more pragmatic perspective that favored theories that worked, even if he might not have a corresponding explanation of the underlying reality. A disappointment.......2007-08-26

This book attempts to place Einstein's work during the 1920s in a social-political and scientific context. I do not have a strong background in physics and I found most of the scientific explanations and descriptions to be confusing, if not completely unintelligible. On the other hand, I found his analyses and description of historical and cultural events in post-WWI Germany to be superficial. Perhaps someone who has a stronger background in physics might get more out of it, but I warn you - don't place too much faith in Bolles' views on history and politics!

Perhaps I stopped reading too soon ..........2007-03-13

I abandoned the book after the fourth chapter. I am not a physicist, but I have read quite a lot about quantum theory and philosophy and Einstein's life, so I was very interested in the topic of the book. I found the author's style, however, very annoying. He does not keep to a timeline, but meanders off in five different directions page after page, and digresses left and right before telling what happened. The book reads more like a chat with a slightly tipsy gossip, who has to bring in every little bit of juicy information about the neighbors and their cats before relaying the main story. I finally gave up when the author tried to explain quantum theory by the properties of springs in the mattress where Einstein is supposedly making love to an actress! (Page 43 for those with prurient interests! ;)

Slow in developing but well researched.......2006-04-23

I found this book to be a little too slow in developing the theme but it is well researched. In the first part, the author tries to describe the post-war Germany and give the reader a sense of the social setting of the time. This is interesting, but I feel that it sometimes also overshadows the main theme -- which should be about the quantum revolution. Had the author been a little more judicious in weighing the materials, it could have been a more absorbing book.

Also, the last famous Einstein-Bohr debate (regarding the "black body emmission on a scale" experiment, in which Bohr defended Heisenberg Principle by using Eisten's own General Relativity) is, in my opinion, one of the most profound and fascinating examples of "thought (or theoretical) experiments" in the history of Physics (others include Einstein's chasing a light beam and Galileo's free fall of two objects with different weights), yet it only appears in the second-to-last chapter and does not get the detailed analysis that it deserves (the author does describe it in detail and has some, but in my opinion not sufficient, commentary).

Despite these flaws, I enjoyed the book and it is well grounded on thorough research.

Now I know Everything!.......2005-06-10

This is one of those books, for which one thinks, that I wish I had read this book years ago! The book clearly shows that how Quantum Mechanics, is NOT a theory. While going through undergraduate Physics program, I used to be bewildered by Quantum. Countering your Profs did not help at all, since you were faced with the canned responses, that "it works"! This book has put me at the highest mountain, that my personal objections to the "theory" were being echoed by Einstien himself!

A very good book which just cracks open the entire Modern Physics revolution in a very concise and simple way in front of all to understand, in the spirit of Einstien himself, who was against the notion of incomprehesibility, even when it came to expalining the laws of the Universe at large. The book puts the reader right next to the Physics gaints of the century, in a very personal way. The picture comes vividly. It's a must have and a must read.

However at some junctures, the book reveals some information, which makes one think about the sources. For instance, the tram ride in Berlin (Einstien & Bohr), while trying to go back home, but keep missing their stops, since they are busy arguing over light quanta. The author regrets, that no passanger heard/witnessed the talk or seeing how pathetically they have been missing thier stops..if there is no account from witnesses, what is the source of our esteemed author? Makes one think. Besides, the editor should pay close attention to typos.

A Great Book.......2005-04-01

Einstein Defiant by Edmund Blair Bolles is a great book that recounts the conflicts between some of the greatest Geniuses of our time. The book explains how Einstein believes that there is order in the universe and you can apply a law and therefore an explanation to everything. Bohr on the other hand believes that there is a form of randomness that takes over and that laws may no longer apply when dealing with quantum. The author obviously has a great love for physics and the scientists that expand the frontiers of physics, because only a person with such passion for physics could write a 300 page biography dealing with physics that has a lot of technical information and keep the reader entertained at the same time. I thought it was a great book and was exceptional in comparison with similar books as it did a great job of explaining some confusing concepts and ideas. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone as it is interesting to see into the minds and achievements of geniuses and it is very entertaining. I really enjoyed this book.

What a disappointment :(.......2002-11-06

The price for this Gramercy edition of Shakespeare sounded so good that I checked it out further as a possible gift for a young student friend...It is judged "an attractive collection", but by the publisher. If only it had any editorial introduction to help one understand the theatrical setting for which the plays were produced or the poetic traditions in which such masterpieces as The Sonnets or Venus & Adonis were written.

If you really care to begin appreciating the sophisticated historical and political insights of Shakespeare's genius or the beauty of his verse you'd much more enjoy one of the Arden or Cambridge copies. For just getting started with any of the Bard's works, the Oxford School copies make him so much more fun.

Even the inexpensive Folger , Signet, and Penguin are so much more helpful than this version. But not the Dover "Thrift" editions - they are equally depressing .

Almost ANY OTHER edition is preferable.......2002-10-17

This Random House Value Edition (aka Gramercy Press) has such an attractive dark blue, gold embossed cover. It would look so nice on your bookshelf. But if you think you might ever want to *read* any of the works of Shakespeare: don't waste your money.
Inside the attractive binding you find facsimile pages (*not* re-typeset by the publisher - and very difficult to read) of some 19th edition with archaic engravings. No introductory notes. No explanatory notes on difficult words. No bibliography for further study of the plays and poems. Not even a credit to the original editor - or an acknowledgement of the *date* of the original editorial work.
Utility for beginning level students: none.
Utility for advanced level students: none.
Utility for scholars: less than none.
Utility for its publisher: excellent (I'm sure the low price regularly snares buyers who don't go to the trouble to return the ook).
RECOMMENDATION: Use the ten-fifteen dollars you would have spent on this volume to 1) buy a thorough edition of a specific play (e.g., Oxford, Routledge, or Cambridge editions or Cambridge School edition for high schoolers) or 2) save toward an edition of the complete plays that is respectably (modernly) edited such as the Arden (Routledge) edition (has only notes on difficult words) or the Addison-Wesley edition by David Bevington (with thorough notes and discussions that will deepen your understanding and appreciation of the works).
BUT HOW BAD CAN IT BE AT THIS PRICE? This book is only useful to decorate a book shelf. Anyone who actually looks inside will be completely put off from further exploration of Shakespeare...

Very interesting read........2005-01-11

"Wriothesley's Roses" central purpose is to discuss Henry Wriothesley, third Earl of Southampton, as The Rose of Shakespeare's sonnets. The author marshals much evidence, interpretation, and supposition (the latter being, perhaps, not such a solid thing, but still very interesting) to support his thesis. He makes a respectable case, and you probably will be pursuaded that The Rose is indeed Henry Wriothesley. I held back on the fifth star in rating this book because, frankly, the writing style was a bit dense. But overall, I recommend the book because it's an interesting topic and advances an interesting hypothesis.

Green's Sleuthing Reveals much about Shakespeare.......2000-03-13

Martin Green's WRIOTHESLEY'S ROSES IN SHAKESPEARE'S SONNETS, POEMS AND PLAYS adds significantly to our information about Shakespeare, of whom few have been able to tell us very much. The book captures the social milieu of the times, mentioning almost everybody who was anybody. It focuses on the well-educated, politically active, and sexually ambiguous coterie surrounding the Earl of Essex and their influence on Shakespeare's knowledge and concepts. Green's thesis is that the third Earl of Southampton, Henry Wriothesley (pronounced Rose-ly) was the "thou, my Rose" to whom the sonnets were addressed, the inspirer of Shakespeare's red and white and Rose imagery. One cannot but be impressed by the amassed evidence, starting with the Wriothesly coat-of-arms and the architectural particulars of H.W.'s Titchfield home. For all who love sleuthing, this book is a must. Stylistically a delight, partly because of Green's ready, wry humor, the book argues its case with the cogency of a skillful lawyer, anticipating and covering all points of view. In his insightful interpretations of Shakespeare's writings, Green highlights the puns and dark conceits that he says were there for artistic reasons and not out of legal necessity to avoid revelation of homosexual or sodomitical content. The book concludes with a short, lyrical chapter describing an initial meeting of Shakespeare and Henry Wriothesley, so beautiful that one ardently hopes it was so. Mr. Green is also author of THE LABYRINTH OF SHAKESPEARE's SONNETS, London 1974.
