    Book Description

It is not uncommon to meet professionals in financial services who have only a vague idea of what their colleagues actually do. The root cause is specialization and the subsequent development of jargon that makes communication between common specialists faster and more precise but is virtually impenetrable to everybody else.

The Bank Analyst’s Handbook provides a modern introduction to financial markets and intermediation. Individual subject areas are covered in a thorough but clear and succinct manner. The breadth of the author’s experience as a sell-side bank analyst is exploited to good effect to pull together these threads and create a coherent framework for the analysis of financial markets, whether these are in advanced economies or developing markets.

The Handbook is well-written and highly accessible. It builds on orthodox financial theory (with all of its flaws and controversies) but also highlights many of the real problems involved with translating such theory into practice. It can be appreciated at many different levels and this explains its wide target readership. The Bank Analyst’s Handbook:

"An excellent guide for any professionals who are coming into the banking industry. Extremely well-written, covering clearly and lucidly a range of topics which many bankers themselves don't understand. I will make this book mandatory reading - no, make that studying - for anybody I hire to work as a financial sector consultant."
    —Chris Matten, Executive Director, PricewaterhouseCoopers

"A great insight into the often murky and impenetrable world of banking... compulsory reading for analysts and investors alike."
—Hugh Young, Managing Director, Aberdeen Asset Management Asia Ltd

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent discussion of banking and finance........2006-05-03

It is refreshing to read a book that is written like a conversation and not like a textbook, yet one that contains the appropriate financial rigors.

If you want to catch up with modern banking and look at it from an analyst's view, this is your book. I enjoyed it very much and use it as a reference often

      Book Description

What role does reason play in our lives? What role should it play? And are claims to rationality liberating or oppressive? For the Sake of Argument addresses questions such as these to consider the relationship between thought and character. Eugene Garver brings Aristotle's Rhetoric to bear on practical reasoning to show how the value of such thinking emerges when members of communities deliberate together, persuade each other, and are persuaded by each other. That is to say, when they argue.

Garver roots deliberation and persuasion in political friendship instead of a neutral, impersonal framework of justice. Through incisive readings of examples in modern legal and political history, from Brown v. Board of Education to the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, he demonstrates how acts of deliberation and persuasion foster friendship among individuals, leading to common action amid diversity. In an Aristotelian sense, there is a place for pathos and ethos in rational thought. Passion and character have as pivotal a role in practical reasoning as logic and language.

          Book Description

The damage caused by nematodes to agricultural crops worldwide runs into billions of dollars and cyst nematodes are one of the most important of these nematode pests. Although initially assumed to be a major problem only in temperate regions, they are now considered to be of global importance across a range of different agro-ecological zones. This unique book, the only one in recent years to concentrate wholly on cyst nematodes, offers a global perspective on this important crop pest. An international team of contributors, each one an active researcher in this area, presents an extensive and completely up-to-date review of our current knowledge; topics discussed include evolution, genetic diversity, genetic engineering, taxonomy, distribution, biology and physiology, pathogenicity, and control.
The information contained within this book will be invaluable to students and specialists studying or researching nematodes; it will also be of interest and value to anyone working in the fields of crop protection, biological control, integrated pest management or sustainable agriculture.

                        Book Description

Distributed around the world, the closely related species of Potato Cyst-Nematodes (PCN), Globodera rostochiensis (Woll.) and Globodera pallida Stone are internationally recognized plant quarantine organisms and a major concern wherever potatoes are grown or traded. The nematodes occur in large soil masses and on potato tubers as microscopic cysts, where they form a complex of morphologically identical, but behaviorally different virulence groups. This variety makes the nematodes difficult to detect, identify, and manage. This book is a synthesis of current practical knowledge and fundamental research on PCN. It examines the biology, detection, identification, and control options (including plant resistance) for PCN. It provides essential information for professionals and advanced students of plant nematology and crop protection.

                          Description:
Root-feeding nematodes may play an important role in generating spatial and temporal variation in natural plant communities, but little is known about the performance of the nematodes in the plant root zone. We studied the emergence, survival and reproductive success of the cyst nematode Heterodera arenaria, a root feeding-specialist that occurs in mobile dunes. The host plants of H. arenaria are buried regularly by windblown sand to which the plants respond by upward clonal expansion. As a consequence, the nematodes have to migrate upwards in the soil profile to find new roots for feeding and reproduction, however, not all juveniles migrate. We tested the hypothesis that the offspring from migrated individuals would perform better than from individuals that remained behind and discuss the advantage of this dualistic behavior. The individual performance of the cyst nematodes was better when their juveniles migrated to the new root layer. In the field, in the new root layer the cysts had more eggs and juveniles than cysts collected from the 1-year-old root layer. Under controlled conditions, cysts from the new root layer released their first juveniles faster than cysts from the 1-year-old root layer. However, the juveniles that do not migrate might be crucial for the persistence of the population. In the past decade in two extremely dry years, we could not find cysts in the new root layer. Apparently, summer drought constrains cyst formation, so that the cysts produced in the older root layers serve as a reservoir for the population. Such reservoirs could become more important when climate change will result in increased incidence of summer droughts.

From the supplier: Soybean cyst nematodes are moving farther north in the U.S. Research shows that the nematodes may be responsible for spreading sudden death syndrome and brown stem rot. Soil tests are necessary to check for soybean cyst nematode infestation.

                              Book Description

The legend of the lost city of Atlantis has captivated the human imagination for centuries. Did this city actually exist, and, if so, what happened to it? Was it destroyed in the greatest cataclysmic event of the Bronze Age? While the truth behind the legend of Atlantis may never be known, Fire in the Sea tells the story of one of the largest and most devastating natural disasters of classical history that may also hold vital clues to the possible existence and fate of the lost city. In vivid prose, author Walter L. Friedrich describes the eruption of the Greek island of Santorini, or Thera, sometime in the 17th or 16th century BC. This eruption, perhaps one of the largest explosions ever witnessed by humankind, sent a giant cloud of volcanic ash into the air that eventually covered settlements on the island. Friedrich relates how this event forever altered the course of civilization in the region, and inspired a mystery that has fired humanity's imagination ever since. More than 160 elegant, full-color photographs and vivid prose capture the beauty, the geology, archaeology, history, peoples and environmental setting of Santorini. Fire in the Sea will readily appeal to the general reader interested in natural catastrophies as well as the beauty of the region. It will also enchant anyone who has ever dreamt about uncovering the mystery of the legend of Atlantis. Walter Friedrich is currently an associate professor at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Aarhus, Denmark. He has visited Santorini at least 35 times since 1975 and has published numerous scientific articles in such international journals as Nature, Lethaia, Spektrum der Wissenschaft, and other publications.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Fire in the Sea.......2005-07-21

"Fire in the Sea: The Santorini Volcano: Natural History and the Legend of Atlantis" by Walter L. Friedrich is a uniquely fascinating scholarly natural history of the Greek island of Santorini, yet amazingly easy to read for a volume with such a wealth of geologic and natural history, as well as a thoughtful inclusion of Plato's writings on Atlantis. The author seems intent on making the secrets of the Santorini volcano and the catastrophic explosion which destroyed the island and made an impact on the Aegean area easily understandable to the average reader, even while discussing geologic formations and the nature of volcanoes. The many photos are quite helpful in understanding the island and its geologic makeup; it was truly
hard to put the book down and I was a little sad when I finished reading, as it had been such a joy to read. I highly recommend this book to amateur rock hounds, vulcanologists, and anyone interested in Santorini.

5 out of 5 stars Clarification: Mount St. Helens erupted in 1980........2002-09-30

The first customer review's comment on Mount St. Helens requires a correction. Mount St. Helens erupted in May 1980, well before this book was written.

Ash particles from this 1980 eruption in Washington State's Cascade Mountains were thrown high enough to be caught up in the jet stream and deposited in a fine-grained plume that extended all the way around the world. This prompted publication of tongue-in-cheek picture postcards that proclaimed, "Don't come to Washington: Washington will come to you!"

But since the book was originally published in Germany, the authors may be forgiven for expecting comparisons with Stromboli and Vesuvius to have more interest for their target audience. An Indonesian author of a similar book might well have focused on comparisons with Krakatoa.

4 out of 5 stars An approachable discourse on the subject.......2002-08-02

It was truly an exciting experience which found me capering about loose scoria ridges looming over the still fuming caldera several feet about the beach; I felt quite daring, especially as I am extremely afraid of heights! I learned a lot that I had missed by dropping out of my degree program prior to going on my summer field camp. There were examples of debris flows, unconformities, erosional channels, wind formations, faulting, uplift of sea bed strata with fossiliferous deposits, all an education in themselves. I also learned that hours on end in the hot sun plotting individual grains of rock for size, shape, color, angularity, and inclination is not my cup of tea. It makes a great summer vacation for the enthusiastic amateur, but I couldn't imagine it as a permanent, full time job. I decided I had missed nothing by remaining a nurse, and looked forward to a publication of results that I could enjoy in the quiet of my own home!

Just such a report has since be published (2000). I had the great good fortune to discover Walter L. Friedrich's volume Fire in the Sea while browsing the various Amazon links from another book on geology. Although it's not an in depth geological or archaeological survey of the research on the island, it is an excellent compendium for the page length of what is known about it with respect to these two topics. Above all it is an approachable discourse on the tectonic history of Santorini, both ancient and modern. There are wonderful photos of the various vistas around the island-many of which I recognized from my own visit there--and several maps that show the development of the site through time. Reports of volcanism and earthquake activity through the ages are included from earlier authors that give an almost biographical character to the story of Santorini or ancient Thera, and there are several illustrations of Minoan art work that help recreate the character of the island prior to the eruption for which the volcano is most noted and often cited, that during Minoan times ca. 1700 BC. At the end of the book in Appendix 1, the author has included one of Plato's Dialogs discussing the ancient tale of Atlantis with which the island has been linked by a number of researchers.

I found the book to be an excellent discourse on the geology of the island but was a little disappointed in that there was so little about the archaeological site of Akrotiri, especially as geologists-including Dr. Floyd McCoy, with whom I worked and who is mentioned in the volume-have been very helpful in illuminating some of the events of the city's last moments. The excavation site is fascinating, as the structures are preserved in places up to second stories. The faulted stair case (p. 70) is included and is one of the most emotive sights in the devestated city, but a more thorough discussion of the site and what is believed to have occurred there during the eruption that ended its life is a very stirring tale, one that could have lent a greater sense of the moment to the reader. It would also illustrate how the activities of archaeology and geology are integrated to generate productive results. Although the author discusses in brief some of the concerns of the modern inhabitants of the island, I would also have enjoyed more photos of the modern towns in the area, since I suspect they are very like those that have existed on the island since antiquity. A discussion of their own history and likely future would have added a sense of continuity to the tale of Santorini

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding, informative account for geology students........2000-09-05

This in-depth survey of the Santorini volcano's natural history and its connections to the Atlantis legend will hold special appeal for students of volcanism and geology: Fire in the Sea is packed with color photos of the volcano, relics, excavations, and maps; and it includes in-depth discussions of volcanism in general. An outstanding, involving account for the dedicated student of geology.

                              4 out of 5 stars A Bronze Age Blast.......2000-08-22

This is a lucid and informative book for both ancient history buffs and those interested in volcanos. The book discusses the Santorini volcano system is detail, and outlines the history of eruptions from the remote past to the present day. The greatest emphasis is on the eruption of 1640 B.C., one of the most violent volcanic explosions of all time.

The text, maps and drawings are excellent, and the author presents not only what we know about the Santorini volcano, but how the scientific conclusions evolved and what the evidence is behind them. The book was published in Germany in 1994, which means that the eruption of Mt. St. Helens had not yet occurred when the book was written. Too bad -- that would have been an excellent example for the author to compare to Santorini.

As a bonus, the cover, the paper quality, printing and photos are all superior to those in most hardback books available today.

Firstly, this spiral-bound book is such an odd shape it doesn't readilty fit a bookshelf. Secondly the diagrams are too small to have any use to anyone not already familiar with the engines. It might be a good, quick refresher for those already knowledgable, but useless for those not. The text is not very good (of what use is it to know that the inventor of the Stirling engine was an engineer, not a minister?) and coupled with diagrams that do not permit us to figure out how the mechanisms operate is not a good combo. We also need a glass to read the tiny equations and it is simply not possible to make sense of the mechanical drawingsl

This book is fully satisfying for those who are studying thermodynamic engineering or just like to see well done drawings. Lots of great text, and as much calculus as you care to see.

5 out of 5 stars Thermodynamics for pleasure.......2000-05-09

What could be drier than "The Evolution of the Heat Engine" (Thermodynamic Atlas 2, when it was first published)? Perhaps "Thermodynamics Atlas 1" by the same author. As it turns out both are completely engrossing and completely original. Atlas 1 does need a little grounding in classical thermodynamics for the reader (viewer?) to make progress but The Evolution of the Heat Engine tells a wonderful story to any inquisitive reader.

Both books exploit pictures, diagrams and graphs to the full - in Atlas 1 almost to the complete exclusion of text, in this volume the sparse text is used to complement the illustrations. These illustrations are not the empty, space filling bubbles and arrows from business guru texts, they are the meat of the work. They deliver real information and understanding, enormous amounts of it. More than that all the graphs, drawings and calculations are in Kolin's own hand, immaculately executed and composed. When you find yourself spending a long time on one page, it is not because it is difficult to understand, it is because there is so much to learn from it.

This book tells the story of one of the most important of man's self made artefacts, picking its way elegantly and informatively through the science needed to explain the behaviour (often anti-intuitive) of guns and rockets, steam engines and Sterling engines and many, many more, whilst giving a carefully distilled description of their mechanical manifestation. I know of no other book with which to compare it. (Wainwright's famous Guides to the English Lake District have a similar flavour, perhaps, but in a very different field.)

There cannot be many books about thermodynamics which can be read for pure pleasure, perhaps this is the only one.

                                        Book Description

This volume of essays examines the forced dispossession caused by the Middle Passage. The book analyzes the texts, religious rites, economic exchanges, dance, and music it elicited, both on the transatlantic journey and on the American continent. The totality of this collection establishes a broad topographical and temporal context for the Passage that extends from the interior of Africa across the Atlantic and to the interior of the Americas, and from the beginning of the Passage to the present day. A collective narrative of itinerant cultural consciousness as represented in histories, myths, and arts, these contributions conceptualize the meaning of the Middle Passage for African American and American history, literature, and life.
