Book Description

How many times have you set out to achieve your goals only to find yourself falling short of the mark? Over the years, we've been inundated by methods of achieving success -- goal setting, daily affirmations, self-help gurus, and subliminal messaging. But these standard techniques have failed us time and time again. So what does work and how do we go about living the life we've always dreamed of having? Is it even possible?

Not only is it possible, with The DNA of Success, it's inevitable. Success is not something "out there" -- it's an inside job. We all possess what it takes to achieve our greatest desires. But first, to find the motivation and direction our lives lack, we need to pinpoint our Core Desires -- those things in life for which we have an intense, unwavering, and deeply felt need. Whether you want to earn more money, establish deeper relationships, boost your self-confidence, or deepen your spirituality, you must first identify your Core Desire -- that intense want that drives you from within.

Jack Zufelt, a top professional speaker and highly acclaimed trainer, knows that all success is a result of the power within us. As The DNA of Success explains, Core Desires are the trigger mechanisms that unleash the Conquering Force. Your Conquering Force is your innate ability to act effectively in a pursuit of your Core Desires. Once you tap into your Conquering Force, you will overcome all obstacles and resistance in your way to achieve amazing results -- every time.

Don't waste your valuable time and energy writing goals, visualizing your success, or repeating mantras -- The DNA of Success smashes the myths of achievement and teaches you to find the cause of success within yourself. Through case histories, business examples, real-life stories, testimonials, success tips, and proven advice, Zufelt reveals the new, in-depth psychology and personal habits that have won him the respect of his colleagues and the praise of the many thousands he has inspired.

5 out of 5 stars An Eye Opening Experience.......2006-05-17

Other than the bible, this book has single handedly helped me more than any other books I have ever read before. Using this book as a foundation has really helped me to make better sense of the direction of my life, as well as get a better understanding from other self help books I have read. However, I have noticed a few critical mistakes that Jack Zufelt has made and that he makes his point as an absolute, as if everyone else is wrong. As an author myself, I know that there is no book out there with the absolute answer. For one thing, the heart speaks in pictures and not words; therefore visualization is very important, because without a vision....Beyond the minor flaws, this is an awsome book to read, and definitely worthy of 5 stars!

3 out of 5 stars generic.......2006-05-01

I'm really surprised by all the five star reviews because this book is pretty generic. Positive, up-beat, but definitely generic.

It's especially ironic that the author Jack Zufelt calls other self-help methods "a dash of psychobabble, a sprinkling of gobbledygook, and a heaping portion of positive thinking."

This same statement comes from a person who uses the word "DNA" to describe a heart-centered approach to life. His use of DNA doesn't even make sense because genetics and especially science is based on logic not intuition. However, if you actually read "DNA of Success" then you will see that his philosophy is based on Core Desires which can only come from the heart.

Also there is the success formula:

Success Attitude = (Core Desires + Direction) x Proper Action + Persistence

Wow! It's even mathematical. Graphing y = mx + b... that means that Core Desires + Direction would be the slope and Persistence would be the y intercept. Genius.

There is a heap of "psychobabble" to go around.

There are also anecdotes. Lots and lots of anecdotes. You can read quotes from Christopher Reeve, Oprah Winfrey, Mother Theresa etc. Inspirational, yes, but the sum is not greater than its parts.

Finally, there is the advice itself. I give this book 3 stars because it did help me to refocus on Core Desires. Actually, I only have one Core Desire, but I digress. A Core Desire is something we feel passionately about to a level of 100. You are supposed to keep asking yourself questions (drill down questions) until you get an answer about which you feel passionate. Then everything else falls into place. Supposedly.

He writes as if you have Core Desires for every aspect of your life including financial, spiritual, family etc. But in fact I have only one Core Desire. This issue of multiple Core Desires was never addressed in the book.

Also his analysis of Core Desires is inherently weak. He makes no distinction between goals and values. For example, a man who can't play football due to injury is told to focus on how making football would make him FEEL and then incorporate those feelings into other areas of his life. That's more of a value assessment. There is no linkage to a specific goal.

And the author does not believe in goal setting.

However, when he writes about Core Desires sometimes they are values, but more often they are goals like "learning to ski". How one makes the connection between a feeling and a specific action is never explained.

Then there are sections of generic advice. Like the importance of finding a mentor, checklists for parenting and the importance of dressing for success.

I just didn't think the advice was that insightful compared to other books. A book I enjoyed more was "Superself : Doubling Your Personal Effectiveness" by Charles J. Givens which incorporates values with goal setting.

1 out of 5 stars Poor.......2006-03-07

The title is horribly misleading. With the word DNA in it, I expected something of substance, based on scientific facts and research. Instead, it was a bad self-improvent type of book.
The basic idea is simple and feels true - you can only succeed in something that you really want. But the idea is neither developed nor executed properly. The author did not build around it, he simply added quotes of famous thinkers and many "real-life" examples, and voila - almost 300 pages. And all the stories sound the same: John/Jane was very unhappy but then realized what he/she really wanted, achieved it and lived happily ever after.
To be honest, the author does attempt to present a method of discovering your core desires, but fails. The method consists of asking yourself these questions:
1. what is it that I want, but don't have?
2. if I had or did that, what would I gain with it and how would it feel?
Then you are supposed to rate each entry on your wish list on a scale of 100, based on how much you want it. The desires that you rated above 80 are the core ones. Duh!

Discovering what you really want goes hand in hand with getting to know yourself. As you get closer to who you really are, you learn to tell the difference between your true desires and ego-based and society-generated ones. It is a life long process and reading a book like this one doesn't make it happen any sooner.

4 out of 5 stars The Truth Will Set You Free!.......2005-11-18

This book will help you uncover "why" you want to be rich and successful. And by helping you find your "Core Desire" in life, you'll be able to stay on track in your success journey.

However, this book is just the beginning, and a great complement to it would be "The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal" by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz. Zufelt's work is also well received by many in the MLM community.

Happy Reading!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good common sense advice.......2006-10-29

The book manages to mix the wrestling tales and finacial tips surprisingly well and gives good advice. If you want to serious investing strategy, look elsewhere, but if you want entertainment and good basic financial advice, this books for you...

4 out of 5 stars Practical Advice and Wrestling Anecdotes--A Worthy Read.......2006-10-20

This is a great, small little book written by one of the more charismatic wrestling personalities of the last several years.

It is a mixture of personal anecdote and "financial advice." I put financial advice in quotes because there are very few specific recommendations that JBL makes over the course of the book. Rather, he gives out general approaches and beliefs that, if applied, he thinks will lead to success for anyone.

And I think he's right--this is the way to do it. It's a principle-centric book, giving you a set of tools, rather than a step-by-step schematic which may or may not apply to your specific situation. Some people may not like it for that reason, however; instead of being told to "work hard and save your money" they might want a list of 10 steps they can take to become instantly wealthy. JBL knows that these "get rich quick" schemes are generally fraudulent, so he stays away from them, giving out the less popular but more honest slow-paced strategies for eventual financial freedom. It's like Mom telling you to eat your green beans. Sometimes, it isn't what you want to hear, and it's certainly not glamorous, but it's probably the right advice.

As a wrestling fan, I enjoyed hearing a little bit about his background and youth. The thing that made me happiest, though, was getting a real insight into Bradshaw's personality--he shines through the pages. You can tell that he wrote this himself, and that's kind of cool in a day and age where celebrities usually pawn such labor off to underpaid, no-name ghost writers. He's witty, if rough, and genuine. Seems like a good, cool guy that some people just wouldn't be able to stand because they wouldn't get his sense of humor.

The one real drawback, and reason I gave it one less star than the full compliment, is due to the books repetitiveness. It's short enough that there's really no call for repeating itself, and yet (like so many other financial advice books, see: Rich Dad, Poor Dad) it does. Early and often.

This is a book of good personal advice and fun wrestling anecdotes. Fans of Mr. Layfield, like myself, will love the ability to see what the man is like through his writing. The personal advice, if consistently acted upon, will lead to success for just about anyone, I have no doubt.

    Recommended.

2 out of 5 stars My first Personal Financial Management book I bought...I wish I knew better.......2006-05-11

I first bought this book almost a year ago when I was clueless about personal finance stuff...Me being a wrestling fan the book was pretty interesting when Layfield mentions about stuff behind wrestling's curtain. But with regards with actual financial managment stuff...its ok at best...

Bottom line...don't get this book...Van Tharp's "Safe Strategies For Financial Freedom" is a much better bet!!!

4 out of 5 stars Straightforward approach with anecdotes (Sp?).......2005-08-31

Good book to whet one's appetite for more financial text. True stories that seemed relatively un-influenced keep you going through the pages. (Though you have to go back a couple times.)

2 out of 5 stars Flash over substance.......2005-08-30

I am a big wrestling fan and I love the JBL's gimmicks. But this book have absolutely no financial sense. If you look for a "How to get rich book" forget it! It is more like an endless parade of boring football anecdotes and useless wrestling stories with very little financial astuce. Despite the fact that I love JBL and I love his persona, don't waste a single dollard on this book. Unfortunately, you won't become the second coming of J.R.Ewing by reading this book.

Don't waste your money and your time!

          Book Description

Biogeography is a vital component in many aspects of Primatology, including studies of evolution, speciation systematics, population genetics, and community ecology. Despite its integral position in studies of primate evolution and ecology and the broad representation of research on this subject in journals, field guides, and edited volumes on different regions of the world, Primate Biogeography is a subject that is rarely addressed as a discipline in its own right.

This comprehensive source introduces the reader to Primate Biogeography as a discipline, highlights the many factors that may influence the distribution of primates, and reveals the wide range of approaches that are available to understanding the distribution of this order.

            Book Description

This book critically reviews the developments and achievements of systematics in the 50 years since the foundation of the Systematics Association in 1937, and more particularly since the appearance of The New Systematics, edited for the Association by Sir Julian Huxley in 1940. Botanists,
microbiologists, palaeontologists, and zoologists--theoreticians and practitioners alike--consider fundamental aspects of the subject and the directions in which it might develop into the next century. The result is a description of a highly active subject adapting concepts and practices to
accommodate exciting new information from expanding areas of research--one which, however, also needs to take increased note of the requirements of its users. The main challenge for systematics in the coming decades emerges as the need to re-establish its central unifying position as the keystone
            of biology.

              5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2007-03-23

This book is excellent. The author has the unique ability to cover the subject in great detail including all the theory, but yet make the reading very easy and enjoyable. I was amazed that I could read 750 pages of advanced and new material in a few weeks.

The 130 page! chapter on crosstalk is a Masterpiece. It is the crowning chapter of the book. There is nothing like it anywhere else. Almost everything the author covers is done better than in any other place. For example, signal spectra is covered in hundreds of books, yet the author has an original way of calculating spectra based on Dirac delta functions which I have never seen before; he covers the tricky subject of partial inductance beautifully, etc.

I feel like the other reviewer who wants to shake the author's hand if he meets him.

This review is a partial repeat of an old review under the name "reader". It was for the first edition. I assume the typos are corrected.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful EMC book.......2006-05-06

This book makes learning EMC as easy as counting one to three. Very logical, easy to understand, and makes you to think how EMC can be fun and challenging. A very good reference book, easpcially if you love to see things simplified mathimatically.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2006-04-07

I consider that this book is a very good start point to introduce oneself into the EMC topic. Clear and pedagogic with a lot of numerical examples and well chosen exercises.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book - Read it all........2001-09-21

Starting first with the negatives, of which they are four. First, do not be fooled by the title word "introduction." This is NOT a book for beginners, but rather senior engineers. If you are new to EMC this is not the book for you. Second, information relative to FCC/CE requirements is dated. Also, some tests relative to CE compliance are not covered. Third, though there are many diagrams, there are almost no pictures. In many cases I found a picture, as opposed to a diagram would have been far more explanatory. Lastly (though it does not bother me in the least, but I thought you would like to know), the book has numerous typos through out its 752 pages.

Ahhhhhh, but what the book is, IS ABSOLUTLY WONDERFUL! As an experienced design consultant, I found information in this book that I have not, and could not find anywhere else. The author has A COMMAND of the subject and it shows. Compared to my peers, I consider myself fairly well versed in the subject of EMC as it pertains to design and debug, but I took a back seat when reading. It was useful even re-reading the things I already knew. The author always offered a new insight. Funny, but after I finished (and it took a while to read) my first thought was "I would really like to meet this guy - to personally request a sequel." For what it is, THIS BOOK IS EXCELLENT, well worth the asking price.

4 out of 5 stars Best in its field.......1999-03-30

This book is excellent. The author has the unique ability to cover the subject in great detail including all the theory, but yet make the reading very easy and enjoyable. I was amazed that I could read 750 pages of advanced and new material in a few weeks. The book unfortunately has many errors and typos which prevents me from giving it 5 stars.

                        Book Description

A delightful addition to the cherished autobiographical work of the Nobel Laureate

A sequel to I. B. Singer's classic memoir In My Father's Court, these stories, published serially in the Daily Forward, depict the beth din in his father's home on Krochmalna Street in Warsaw. A unique institution, the beth din was a combined court of law, synagogue, scholarly institution, and psychologist's office where people sought out the advice and counsel of a neighborhood rabbi.

The twenty-seven stories gathered here show this world as it appeared to a young boy. From the earthy to the ethereal, these stories provide an intimate and powerful evocation of a bygone world.

5 out of 5 stars Short concise excellent Singer.......2001-02-03

These stories were originally published ,in serial form, in the Jewish daily Foward. They are short almost precise stories of IB singers youth in Warsaw and his Fathers "court',the BETH DIN, a combination court, synagogue ,advice for the lovelorn, place of talmudic debate, etc. The stories, vignettes drawn from memory, tell these so well. None of these stories are in the collected stories,so it makes the purchase of these 2 volumes essential{the other is IN MY FATHERS COURT]. From Old widows wanting to remarry, to overly pious mates, to pseudo-intellectual rabbis trying to show off their'learning".,I.B. Singer has left us a record of a vanished civilization, in a place and time less then 70 years ago.Essential stories from the gratest short story writer of our time.

5 out of 5 stars more stories from a master.......2000-11-14

These are vignettes, really, scenes remembered from Singer's youth when he served as a messenger errand-boy for his father who conducted a beth din in Warsaw. Although often ambiguous and seemingly inconclusive, they are the works of a master who can effortlessly create a powerful scene in only four or five pages. He avoids all the popular flaws of the short-story genre. There is not a trace of vanity or judgment in his narratives. He is the perfect short story writer.
