Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Fine Art of Small Talk.......2007-05-14

this is a great training and useful to all who are either fearful of speaking to other people in general or as debra described herself for people who just do not know how to move conversations along.

1 out of 5 stars Not much there.......2007-04-18

A slim book with a lot of white space. Wish I had read the book over a cappuccino at a local bookstore rather than actually buying it.

5 out of 5 stars This tape really helped.......2007-01-31

I'm sorry to see so many bad reviews, so I'm taking my first step into cyberspace reviews. I can't speak for the book, but the tape made a real difference in my life. I was painfully shy as a child and teenager and had no clue how to interact with groups until I started teaching myself by observing others at college. I'd gotten better by my mid-20s, but I still dreaded parties where I knew no one or other social gatherings. My attitude was, "I hate small talk, give me something 'real' to talk about."
When I was hired as an executive director of a nonprofit in my mid-30s, I realized I had to teach myself how to work a reception and represent my organization comfortably and competently. This tape gave me the tips I needed, like: Walking in taking responsibility for making others feel comfortable puts you in a better mindset. And seek out the other people who are standing alone -- they'll appreciate you saving them, as they are probably as uncomfortable as you. So - give this a chance.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2007-01-03

A little bit boring to read, 'cause it repeats itself a lot

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-08-24

This books gives great tips and suggestions on how to start conversations. It even give you sample ice breakers. Good book to have and keep around to refresh your small talk skills.

              Book Description

Worldwide climatic changes have been raising concerns about potential changes to crop yields and production systems. Such concerns include the ability to accommodate these uncertain effects in order to ensure an adequate food supply for an increasing population. Written by leading international experts, this book is the first comprehensive examination of the potential effects climate change, particularly green house gases, will have on agroecosystems. It also reviews the effects such systems have on climate change itself.

                  Book Description

Agriculture is significantly influenced by the weather and as the world's population increases, every fluctuation of food quantity and quality incurs serious economic consequences which could ultimately lead to major social problems. Agronomists as a result, seek information on yields and how the effects of adverse weather conditions on crops can be ameliorated by cultural and agronomical practices. The influence of the main weather factors on growth processes of the plants and their yields is the primary theme of this book with emphasis on the critical periods when yield formation is most sensitive to effects of weather. The book explores energy management and demonstrates how farmers must concentrate more on the protection of the atmosphere and on environmental conservation than on increasing the amount of energy spent in production since the latter is drawn from non-renewable fossil sources. All this requires improved knowledge of atmosp

                      Description:
The increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration and changes in associated climatic variables will likely have a major influence on regional as well as international crop production. This study describes an assessment of simulated potential maize (Zea mays) grain yield using (i) generated weather data and (ii) generated weather data modified by plausible future climate changes under a normal planting date and dates 15 days earlier and 15 days later using CropSyst, a cropping systems simulation model. The analysis is for maize production at Cedara, a summer rainfall location within the midlands of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Baseline weather data input series were generated by a stochastic weather generator, ClimGen, using 30 years of observed weather data (1971-2000). The generated baseline weather data series was similar to the observed for its distributions of daily rainfall and wet and dry day series, monthly total rainfall and its variances, daily and monthly mean and variance of precipitation, minimum and maximum air temperatures, and solar radiant density. In addition, Penman-Monteith daily grass reference evaporation (ET"o) calculated using the observed and generated weather data series were similar except that the ET"o values between 2 and 3mm were less for the observed than for the corresponding generated values. Maize grain yields simulated using the observed and generated weather data series with different planting dates were compared. The simulated grain yields for the respective planting dates were not statistically different from each other. However, the grain yields simulated using the generated weather data had a significantly smaller variance than the grain yields simulated using the observed weather data series. The generated baseline weather data were modified by synthesized climate projections to create a number of climatic scenarios. The climate changes corresponded to a doubling of carbon dioxide concentration to 700@mll^-^1 without air temperature and water regime changes, and a doubling of carbon dioxide concentration accompanied by mean daily air temperature and precipitation increases of 2^oC and 10%, 2^oC and 20%, 4^oC and 10%, and 4^oC and 20%, respectively. The increase in the daily mean minimum air temperature was taken as three times the increase in daily mean maximum air temperature. Input crop parameters of radiation use and biomass transpiration efficiencies were modified for maize in CropSyst, to account for physiological changes due to increased carbon dioxide concentration. Under increased carbon dioxide concentration regimes, maize grain yields are much more affected by changes in mean air temperature than by precipitation. The results indicate that analysis of the implications of variations in the planting date on maize production may be most useful for site-specific analyses of possible mitigation of the impacts of climate change through alteration of crop management practices.

It may seem a stretch to connect a volcanic eruption with civil and religious unrest in Indonesia today, but Simon Winchester makes a compelling case. Krakatoa tells the frightening tale of the biggest volcanic eruption in history using a blend of gentle geology and narrative history. Krakatoa erupted at a time when technologies like the telegraph were becoming commonplace and Asian trade routes were being expanded by northern European companies. This bustling colonial backdrop provides an effective canvas for the suspense leading up to August 27th, 1883, when the nearby island of Krakatoa would violently vaporize. Winchester describes the eruption through the eyes of its survivors, and readers will be as horrified and mesmerized as eyewitnesses were as the death toll reached nearly 40,000 (almost all of whom died from tsunamis generated by the unimaginably strong shock waves of the eruption). Ships were thrown miles inshore, endless rains of hot ash engulfed those towns not drowned by 100 foot waves, and vast rafts of pumice clogged the hot sea. The explosion was heard thousands of miles away, and the eruption's shock wave traveled around the world seven times. But the book's biggest surprise is not the riveting catalog of the volcano's effects; rather, it is Winchester's contention that the Dutch abandonment of their Indonesian colonies after the disaster left local survivors to seek comfort in radical Islam, setting the stage for a volatile future for the region. --Therese Littleton

                                    Book Description

Simon Winchester, New York Times bestselling author of The Professor and the Madman, examines the legendary annihilation in 1883 of the volcano-island of Krakatoa, which was followed by an immense tsunami that killed nearly forty thousand people. The effects of the immense waves were felt as far away as France. Barometers in Bogotá and Washington, D.C., went haywire. Bodies were washed up in Zanzibar. The sound of the island's destruction was heard in Australia and India and on islands thousands of miles away. Most significant of all -- in view of today's new political climate -- the eruption helped to trigger in Java a wave of murderous anti-Western militancy among fundamentalist Muslims, one of the first outbreaks of Islamic-inspired killings anywhere. Krakatoa gives us an entirely new perspective on this fascinating and iconic event.

This P.S. edition features an extra 16 pages of insights into the book, including author interviews, recommended reading, and more.

3 out of 5 stars Good book but..........2007-09-17

The topic is too fascinating. I surely would like to have some more maps in order to better follow the stories. I agree with other reviews that states that the book could have been shorter without losing nothing of the story. But in the overall it was a good reading.

4 out of 5 stars Nature at its Most Awesome.......2007-09-13

Of all the volcanoes throughout the world, it is probably the case that Krakatoa is the most well known. Its awesome explosion in 1883 was heard more than 5,000 kilometres away. It caused extraordinary sunrises and sunsets across the world for years. There has never been anything quite like it in recorded history.

Simon Winchester has performed an admirable task in bringing the background to the events of 1883 to light. At time he dwells too much on the esoteric but, in the end, he brings us back to the explosion and its consequences. The reader is wrapped up in the story as it rolls along. We are mesmerised by the explosion itself and almost as fascinated by the island of today. Indeed, at the end of the book, Winchester travels to new Krakatoa and scales its ever growing peak to peer down into the cauldron. How many among us would know that the island is again growing apace? In fact, return to the sight after a few years' absence and the changed topography is obvious to the naked eye. One can only surmise that, one day, history could well repeat itself.

I enjoyed Winchester's tale. He can be prone to being distracted by less than totally relevant facts but, in the end, he has told a great story. Read this book and marvel at the forces of nature over which humans have no control.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read for a rather Dry subject.......2007-09-08

One would not have thought that a book about Krkakatoa would be this intersting, it does take you on tangential subjects which nevertheless are fundamentally the cause of Krakatoa. I learnt a lot.

The grandness of the event describe would be even grander if we had not already known/experienced the Indian ocean Tsunami of 2005.

This book lets you understand the forces underlying that as well. A very good read, even if at times you get more information than you think you need.

                                    Highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars Delightful ramble to a big bang.......2007-09-08

This is not the direct route to Krakatoa. If you are ready for a delightful historical and scientific ramble with plenty of quirky side trips (including parentheticals*)that eventually bring you to "The Day the World Exploded" then you will love this book. From why a lace furniture shroud is called an "antimacassar" to the German roots of Tsingtao beer. By the time the tsunami arrives you may have forgotten that this was why you picked up the book in the first place. But in this case it is very much about the voyage not the destination.

                                    * And plenty of footnotes.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fascinating.......2007-09-05

To Simon Winchester, Krakatoa is more than just a volcano: it is an anti-hero of sorts, a figure that has existed for thousands of years, that has been the source of myth and mayhem. Krakatoa has shaped the way we view the world, and no one can tell that story quite like Winchester.

Winchester tackles this tale like any other epic--starting at the beginning, working up to the climax (he doesn't reach the actual 1883 eruption until page 200, and then spends only 60 pages on it), and then going into the aftermath...or, in this case, a new beginning. You'll learn more than you bargained for by purchasing this book; but then again, you won't really care. Winchester tackles subjects ranging from the foundations of trade in the East Indies, to the origins of the Islamic faith. He spends a bit too much time dealing with the science of plate tectonics (although the history of the theory is told in a fascinating manner), but we can forgive him for this brief geological digression, as it is relevant to the story (many of his digressions have very little to do with Krakatoa directly, although you won't mind one bit). "Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded" is an informative, interesting story of one of history's most infamous creations. More importantly, though, it is simply a good read.

The annihilation in 1883 of the volcano-island of Krakatoa was followed by an immense tsunami that killed nearly forty thousand people. Beyond the purely physical horrors of an event that has only very recently been properly understood, the eruption changed the world in more ways than could possibly be imagined.

                                                    Book Description

This highly illustrated monograph provides a comprehensive study of the structure and function of proteins, nucleic acids and viruses using synchrotron radiation and crystallography. Synchrotron radiation is intense, polychromatic and finely collimated, and is highly effective for probing the structure of macromolecules. This is a fast-expanding field, and this timely monograph gives a complete introduction to the technique and its uses. Beginning with chapters on the fundamentals of macromolecular crystallography and macromolecular structure, the book goes on to review the sources and properties of synchrotron radiation, instrumentation and data collection. There are chapters on the Laue method, on diffuse X-ray scattering and on variable wavelength dispersion methods. The book concludes with a description and survey of applications including studies at high resolution, the use of small crystals, the study of large unit cells, and time-resolved crystallography (particularly of enzymes). Appendices are provided which present essential information for the synchrotron user as well as information about synchrotron facilities currently available. A detailed bibliography and reference section completes the volume. Many tables, diagrams and photographs are included.
