Book Description

What do Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Leonardo da Vinci, and Ray Kroc, the man who created the McDonald's franchise enterprise, have in common? They have all mastered the skills of creative genius-essential tools in today's business climate.

Having researched the lives and techniques of past and present geniuses for this inspiring and provocative new handbook, Annette Moser-Wellman helps workers at all levels build and refine their working styles. These qualities of creativity-drawn from the the realms of art, science, as well as business-make up the five distinct "faces":

* Seer-the power to image
* Observer-the power to notice details
* Alchemist-the power to make connections
* Fool-the power to celebrate weakness
* Sage-the power to simplify

Moser-Wellman shows how we can utilize these creative thinking strategies and flourish in the workplace.

"It teaches people about the nature of creativity and how to cultivate it." (Fast Company)

"Moser-Wellman has given us five different perspectives from which to creatively tackle business challenges." (Carla J. Paonessa, Managing Partner, Accenture)

4 out of 5 stars Useful With An Asterisk..........2005-11-10

But so are most books of this type. The book's best feature is a nice combination of detail with theory. There are lots of exercises and a generally cheery "you can do it!" tone. That's good, but the book's recurring emphasis on developing multi-modal approaches to problem-solving is better (i.e., creativity means trying approaches you're not as familiar with). Concluding sections on interacting with people of dominant types that differ from you, and how to sell your ideas to them, is probably worth the cover price alone.
The author loves examples. These examples are not always correct (salons peaked in the 1700s, not the "seventeenth century" to cite one of more than a dozen examples), nor do they fit as neatly into their creative categories as the author supposes. In part, though, the reader comes to see this as the unique characteristics of a certain creative style--seeing this and making allowance for it is good practice for the rest of the book. After all, true creativity is aware of variant creative modes, especially in colleagues or even competitors.
The morning after skimming the entire book I began to experiment with some of its suggestions. Within two hours I had come up with a metaphor that will solve one of the most intractable process problems for my company--an idea that literally took my breath away, on something I'd been struggling with for months. I put a lot of work in; this book didn't give me any answers. But in a sense it reminded me of the answer, or gave me ideas about how and where to look for the answer. I was a college football player already, to use a metaphor, and this was a long look at a pro playbook. It won't work unless you're playing college ball; if you're a top pro player, you should look at something more advanced. But if you want to develop a basis of creative talent, this'll help.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting perspectives on creative thinking styles.......2003-12-27

This book starts off a quick précis of the 5 faces : Seer, Observer, Alchemist, Fool, Sage. Then it gives a self-assessment of which Styles you are currently using. I scored highest on Fool & Observer, and lowest on Sage.

As I read through the book, I was disillusioned as to its worth. But when I got to Fool, I thought "that's me exactly" (there's no shame in being a 'Fool' in this schema).

So I looked back at the earlier chapters, and thought maybe the questions & examples were not as appropriate as they might have been?

Anyway, I began to appreciate the book more. Certainly the latter sections on how to apply the 5 different styles at work, and the strengths & weaknesses of teams who find themselves with & without all these players, were of more use than the theorising.

There are other books offering rival schemas, but I think this one is as good as any of the others, and easier to read.

    Book Description

What drives our social mood? Our actions? Our motivations? Can we look into the make-up of the universe and apply it to who we are and what we do? The answers to these questions are to be found in the new science of socionomics.

Socionomics evolved from the Wave Principle, a theory of patterns in financial markets. Now Robert Prechter proposes that this very same principle can be applied to our own social and cultural lives. Prechter shows that dominant aspects of our unconscious mentation are characterized by measurable patterns. Those patterns form the building blocks of humankind's social interaction, and in turn, the Wave Principle.

"WOW stuff! Prechter is doing the most creative work that I have seen in my career on Wall Street." -John R. Greeley, professional market analyst, co-founder, Market Technicians Association "Spectacular. I was absolutely impressed. A most brilliant work." -David Johnson, PhD, MD

"Congratulations to Robert Prechter for his interesting, insightful and trail-blazing work. Anyone willing to take the time to read this volume will be rewarded with a new understanding of human behavior, markets and events." -Tom Spradley, retired college mathematics professor

"Learning about socionomics has proven to be one of those rare intellectual epiphanies that results in an absolute change in the direction of my life. So much about the human experience that had mystified me all of my adult life seems so clear now, so understandable - even to the point of being predictable." -Jack Hobson-Dupont, President, Monadyne Corp.

"I love this theory. Socionomics is sure to be a primary reference source for quite some time. The volume and value of analysis that Prechter has conducted is something hard to over-appreciate. There should be university courses and degrees in the science of socionomics and perhaps Nobel Prize winners as well. I recommend many readings of the book to appreciate it in depth." Professor Valeri Safonov, PhD, former First Secretary of Ministry of External Affairs of USSR and economist with the Russian Embassies in Canada and India

5 out of 5 stars Taking Stock of the New Science of Socionomics.......2004-11-05

About twenty years ago, I was sitting in the office of a blue blood firm on Wall Street. The elderly partner closed the door, opened his desk drawer and asked: "Do you know about this?" I expected that the book he was handing me was either erotica or esoterica. It was the Elliott Wave Principle by A.J. Frost and Bob Prechter. Yes, I had heard of it, but not everyone had. Now, aspects of it are available on almost every investor's computer. It has become something of a universal language. But, one can order coffee in different cultures and in different cafes, but be served very different qualities of coffee. It depends on the Barista! Elliott wave may be known, but it may not be cognized. It is invariably associated with Bob Prechter. But he has always acknowledged that he was developing other people's ideas. Prechter has been famously known as being a fabulous bull and infamously regarded as a dire bear. Elliott wave is burdened with the Taboo of being "Technical." Many barbs against Technicals are conveniently anchored against Elliott. Elliott was, in part, developing the preliminary theory of Charles Dow whose eponymous average we wrestle with every day. Whether or not the majority recognizes the Elliott wave paradigm, there are patterns in markets which cryptozoic market speculators use every day.

Bob Prechter's new book, The Wave Principle of Human Social Behavior, subtitled the New Science of Socionomic(www.elliottwave.com/socionomics), may represent his defining contribution to finance. It includes Elliott Wave but delves much further into the frontiers of finance. Investor psychology (the "Psychologicals," as I call them) are subsumed under the larger scale of Sociology (the "Sociologicals?") His book provides new material on Herding and Mood which are the pith of Behavioral Finance. Perhaps most compelling are his insights into popular culture. His analysis of how art, music, sports and political trends relate to the market is unique. The book includes photographs of historical events which show the synchronicity of markets and financial culture. This is related to what I call "Pagegrading" in my book, Behavioral Trading. Front page photographs are a powerful limbic rendering of the Zeitgeist. The Socionomically inclined can read markets from the Social Mood and vice versa. He demonstrates that "Social Mood" is patterned and has a reflexive predictability with the market. The difficulty many people have with Elliott is their apprehension that they have to learn all of the details. But, much can be gleaned from a more generic appreciation. When we go to a Japanese restaurant, we don't expect to learn how to make sushi. We could probably learn exactly how to do it, but only with great passion and practice. Why not just drink the sake and begin to think a little bit Socionomically? The difficulty with Philosophy is that it is always relational and hierarchical. A market philosophy provides a framework for thinking which may not always deliver an easy course of action. Socionomics is a new worldview which ultimately requires a "Metanoia" or change of mind. Prechter provides ample evidence of his Socionomic proposition. But proof may not be enough at the present time. Observe smokers, holding a cigarette pack saying "smoking kills." Everyone knows that they kill, but they do not necessarily cognize it. Thus, smokers are happily smoking with at least one of their three brains. Investors are happy calculating P/E ratios and buying stocks which should do well. We don't cognize the market. Socionomics states that men make markets move in habitual ways which are rather precisely mirrored in popular culture. The New Science of Socionomics is an important touchstone in the search for intelligent life in financial markets. We should cognize it if we can.

    2 out of 5 stars Not Convinced.......2002-12-27

Maybe I'm missing something but all I saw was cherry-picking examples to support a hypothesis that Fibonacci sequences and their .618 ratios are fundamentally related to human behaviors including the stock market. I understand there are thousands of guys analyzing previous trends claiming to have found the Holy Grail; statistically a portion will forecast correctly and therefore convince themselves the're on to something. As a neuroscientist interested in certain aspects of group dynamics, I found the psychology parts weak. Again, the author quotes from mostly ambitious/famous scientists claiming to be able to distill complex scientific problems with a clever quip. I don't feel confident enough to completely dicount the hypothesis but I'm at least 61.8% sure you can pass this book up.

5 out of 5 stars Spooky feeling of a breakthrough into the unknown.......2000-08-11

Imagine you were one of the first people to look through a telescope - and you suddenly found out that the sky was not merely wallpaper. You would have known that the discovery was a breakthrough, but what would happen would be spooky to think about.

That's how I feel reading Prechter's book about the new science of Socionomics. The telescope made sense of the jumble of lights in the night sky, as well as strange events like eclipses. The new science of Socionomics makes sense of a huge jumble of information in financial markets as well as strange events like crashes, manias, fads and fashions. The personality of markets and societies is linked directly to how our brains respond to certain types of input.

It is also a book that stirs up the back of your mind - are we really as independant in thinking as we imagine ourselves to be: how strongly are we influenced by the society around us? The book shows frightening evidence that our brains are hard wired to respond immediately to impulses stimulated by the human herd.

Overall, the book is like reading about the first observations from telescopes - it is a spooky glimpse into a world right in front of our faces that we've not understood until now. If you read it thoughtfully, the book will be both unsettling and inspiring in its implications.

5 out of 5 stars Flat Earthers vs: Round Earthers.......2000-08-06

If you use Elliott Wave in your investment analysis you know it works. If you try to point this out to a non-waver you feel like the round earth advocates must have felt 500 years ago defending their position to the flat earthers. After all it does look flat; and stock charts do just look like a bunch of squiggly lines.

After reading this book you begin to understand the science that is at work in Elliott Wave Theory, and believe me, they are not just a bunch of squiggles. Mr. Prechter makes his case brilliantly.

    5 out of 5 stars Incredible book!.......2000-08-05

As someone who is extremely interested in how the brain works and why we 'do what we do', as "rational" human beings, I found this book to be extremely compelling. I simply could not put it down. Prechter takes a huge compilation of material (from neuroscience, psychology, fractal anaylsis to technical stock market analysis) and boils it down into a beautifully written and fascinating look at how our mind and society is shaped and guided by an underlying mathematical pattern that is the foundation for all living systems.

We are lead by Prechter through a basic understanding of Ralph N. Elliott's Wave Principle - a technical method of stock market analysis Elliott discovered during the 1930's - and come to find that this pattern is fractal based, and not only indicates where the NASDAQ is going to go tomorrow, but shows us where we will go as a society!

This book is a must read for anyone studying brain function, psychology, or philosophy AND for the beginning and seasoned trader! I wish I had found this type of information years ago.

              Book Description

Biological chemistry is a major frontier of inorganic chemistry. Three special volumes devoted to Metal Sites in Proteins and Models address the questions: how unusual ("entatic") are metal sites in metalloproteins and metalloenzymes compared to those in small coordination complexes? And if they are special, how do polypeptide chains and co-factors control this? The chapters deal with iron, with metal centres acting as Lewis acids, metals in phosphate enzymes, with vanadium, and with the wide variety of transition metal ions which act as redox centres. They illustrate in particular how the combined armoury of genetics and structure determination at the molecular level are providing unprecedented new tools for molecular engineering.

4 out of 5 stars Great book, *after* an introduction to the topic..........2005-10-15

Into the 5th week of Mineralogy class, this book *then* became extremely informative - this is not a self-instructional manual, and I do not believe it was intended to be so. Most students will find the writing style in this text a bit intellectually heady, having been written by a distinguished Harvard PhD professor. It could have been written more concisely, perhaps more simplisticly, but all the information is there, and from what I understand, past editions were more comprehensive than this 22nd edition. I personally love this text, and only *after* an introduction to the subject will this text make real sense to the reader. And yes, I agree with the previous posts regarding certain statements about crystal structures that require some sort of base level knowledge of chemistry or physics or math (i.e. symmetry concepts) in order to fully comprehend a particular passage, but that's what you get from an Ivy League PhD-er! I believe this text was designed for the third year student who should already have taken 1 semester each of at least chemistry and calculus. Although calculus isn't necessary for the class, it presupposes that you know and understand some basic conceptual geometry.

I would suggest reading some basic introduction to mineralogy websites before tackling this book. Also, I have found that for the conscientious mineralogy students who possess a "more refined" reading level and who are putting genuine effort into the class, this book is a valuable edition. Other texts simply do not cover as much material as found here, such as x-ray diffraction and optics. Overall meant for students and not the self-taught, although that depends on the individual, but in general I would not recommend this for the beginner who wants to learn on his/her own. Still, a great text. Try getting some olders editions with less sub-subjects edited out for a real comprehensive text!

              1 out of 5 stars old-school text.......2005-05-16

Oi, how much more convoluted can a text get? With every edition, this text gets less organized. Or that is at least true for the last 3 editions, anyways ... Eg. In how many chapters can the topic of "symmetry" be covered? Keeping it to 1 would be much easier to digest, thankyou.

The text is written in old-school rambly style... sure, it covers all topics, but it is hard to learn from (and in my experience, even harder to teach from). There are better options out there. Nesse "Intro to Mineralogy" text.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough and Well Illustrated.......2001-12-26

The book contains excellent diagrams, graphs and other illustrations, which are useful for all students. Although the CD has valuable tutorials for beginning students, the text is often too technical and "dry" for beginners. Besides discussing crystallography and mineralogy, the book also provides a good review of chemistry and methods for analyzing minerals. Overall, the book is an excellent reference for upper level undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty. Lower-level undergraduates may require a less technical textbook.

              4 out of 5 stars From a student's perspective.......2000-12-21

I just finished the semester, so I think I have a pretty good feel for the book now. At the beginning I found it difficult simply because it occasionally used terms and diagrams before explaining them. As the semester progressed and I became more knowledgable about the subject, I found the textbook increasingly helpful and readable. Certainly there is a lot of good stuff in here, and the CD was unecessary but fun. Overall, it was a good complement to the lectures.

5 out of 5 stars A very useful tool for anyone learning about minerals.......1998-09-19

I have used this book for my mineralogy class in college. I keep it as a reference. i believe my understanding of the physical properties of mineral could not have happened from lectures alone. It was this book which helped me and everyone in mineralogy classes throughout the U.S. There are easy to use tables and facts on almost every mineral you could come across in the field. I hope this book lasts with me the rest of my life.

                Book Description

A reissue of a classic book, corrected, edited, and typeset, to be published in the Biological Physics Series. Intended for undergraduate courses in biophysics, biological physics, physiology, medical physics, and biomedical engineering, this book is an introduction to statistical physics with examples and problems from the medical and biological sciences. Topics include the elements of the theory of probability, Poisson statistics, thermal equilibrium, entropy and free energy, and the second law of thermodynamics. Chapters include problems and references. The book can be used as a supplement to standard introductory physics courses, and as a text for medical schools, medical physics courses, and biology departments. The three volumes combined present all the major topics in physics. Originally published in 1974 from the authors's typescript, this reissue will be edited, corrected, typeset, the art redrawn, and an index added. These books are being reissued by Springer in the Biological Physics Series in response to frequent requests to provide these texts to satisfy the growing need among students and practitioners in the medical and biological sciences with a working knowledge of the physical sciences. The books are also in demand in physics departments either as supplements to traditional intro texts or as main text for those departments offering courses with biological or medical physics orientation. A solutions manual will be available. The authors are recognized experts in the field, and are under contract for an upperlevel/grad text in biological physics. Benedeck was the recepient of the 1995 Irving Lanmuir Prize from the American Physical Society for Chemical Physics, and the 1994 Biological Physics Prize by the American Physical Society.
