The Personal Touch.......2007-09-04
This book should be a part of every business owners library. So many business owners have ventured so far from many of the business practices in this book that they will never aspire to the success of Ms. Williams.
This book is practical, well thought out, easily read, and you can use the principles in your daily life of how you are to treat people. This is not just a book for business people this is a book for all people.
After reading this book it forced me to examine the way I have conducted my life and business relationships.
I now make it a habit to return all calls and emails as quickly as possible.
Buy this book for your friends and family it will truly change your thought process and you will begin to utilize The Personal Touch in your own life and certainly every aspect of your business.
The importance of connecting!.......2007-08-07
Terrie hit it right with the Personal Touch, She reminds you how important it is to build relationships in business.
Wonderful, Helpful Book.......2006-10-05
I found this book to have the best of both worlds. That is, it contains wonderful practical advice and tip along with a philosophical foundation. It is a wonderful book for those who are thinking about going into business. It is also appropriate for those who need a career boost.
Ms. Williams has an easy writing style. The stories are interesting and further re-enforce her points. She seems to be able to relate to celebrities and regular people with equal comfort.
I highly recommend it!
My career was built on the life teachings of The Personal Touch by Terrie, my mentor.......2006-06-05
The source behind my daily motivation has always been Terrie Williams, and whose book not only gives me inspiration, but the strength to move on. The Personal Touch is my bible, and is the resource every CEO and entrepreneur MUST READ! Terrie is a MAGNIFICENT person and one of the most professional people I know. When I see Terrie speak at events, I am reminded of her ideals and principles as featured in the Personal Touch. The Personal Touch will continue to be a top referred book for businesses, organizations and a gift to many souls for many years to come. Hearing Terrie speak at the BEA caused me to purchase more copies for friends. Everyone thanks Terrie for simply being a role model of success beyond all obstacles. I can't wait to read Black Pain: It Just Looks Like I'm Not Hurting as Terrie announced at BookExpo.
Back to a Moral Foundation.......2005-08-11
EXCELLENT!! easy read - with the foundation for a productive life and business.....for the haughty....it may seem too simplistic - simplicity is profound - why? Because this world has moved so far away from building strong character and integrity -- results = corporate downfalls and mediocre products and services. I highly recommend this book for anyone who values integrity above all.-- in life and business.
Book Description
Investment secrets from the millionaire venture capitalists of Silicon Valley. Venture capital plays a significant role in launching the technologies that continue to redefine our work and life. Alongside the innovators who dream up the ideas, VCs contribute the tactical brainpower that fuels Silicon Valley. And it is through this process of high-stakes investing that unbelievable fortunes are made. The clubby world of big-bucks venture capital is of considerable interest to investors and entrepreneurs alike. The VC Way is the first book to take readers into this private world of extreme investing. For those who want to invest like the best, it reveals their unique strategies, sectors they are tracking, screens and criteria, best and worst investments, and how individuals can use the lessons they've learned. Packed with insider's advice and fascinating stories, The VC Way contains accounts from some of the most influential and noteworthy venture capitalists in business today--Ann Winblad of Hummer Winblad, Neil Weintraub of 21st Century Internet, and dozens of others. The VC Way is an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to match strategies with these master investors.

Gain insight into how investors think.......2005-04-06
"An entrenched enterprise usually doesn't have much incentive to change the world, because it has so much staked in the world as it is presently ordered."
The VC Way shows the true nature of Venture Capitalists. Zygmont explains how Venture Capitalists offer more than just money, they offer expertise and connections. Starting off with An Adventure Capital Story, the author quickly gets to the point - Venture Capitalists are interested in rapid growth companies with potential for high impact, lifestyle companies need not apply.
Venture Capital is more than just about money. It's about changing the world we live in. Through money, experience in building companies, and cross-industry connections, VC's are able to bring to bear a tremendous amount of energy to effect change.
If you've ever wondered what Venture Capitalists really do, The VC Way will give you the insider's view. And if you're serious about transforming your ideas into market reality, you'll most likely need external funding from investors. The VC Way and Confessions of a Venture Capitalist (April Byvation) will help you gain insight into how investors think. With this knowledge you'll certainly be able to put your best foot forward when asking for money.

Useful, though limited in scope and somewhat dated.......2004-08-06
This is a decent first book for those trying to get into, or familiar with, the VC field. It contains behind-the-scenes stories of what makes a VC successful. It also contains different viewpoints from a variety of individuals; this bandwidth is good to provide the reader. The author is obviously a fan of venture capital, but he provides ample justification for his view by presenting numerous tales of the important role VCs play in entrepreneurship in this country. This book can be highly useful, as long as the potential reader is aware of what this book does and does not discuss.
Thus, the reader should be aware that this book is almost completely focused on communications and high-tech industries - primarily the internet, software, and IT. There are exactly four pages total devoted to two other major areas of VC interest and investment: healthcare and the life sciences. Although these areas take much longer to bear fruit, they can provide longer returns - often due to the patent protection they provide - compared with the areas discussed in this book. Such companies have longer life-spans before they have revenue, generate a product, or are a candidate for a liquidation event. The skills necessary for this type of investment are not directly addressed here. Finally, the author is somewhat dismissive of these two areas since they are rarely the billion-dollar deals he tends to dwell on. Consequently, the directory of firm provided at the back of the book are absent of the major players in healthcare and life sciences - such as MPM, which is a billion-dollar fund.
The book was published in 2001, and that could explain why it is so consumed with communications and high-tech. The past few years have been very difficult for those starting and funding new companies, and readers limiting themselves to this book will get somewhat historical - rather than current - information.
Finally, for some reason, the author occasionally drifts into social commentary, as when he describes one company located in a not-so-great neighborhood. He describes the music playing in that area as "some variant of trailer trash rock or hip-hop."
Venture Capital 101 (Not Suitable for Individual Investors).......2001-07-08
In The VC Way, Zygmont delineates the common character traits of venture capitalists. In that task Zygmont does a credible job, having interviewed a number of well known VCs such as James Swartz (Accel Partners) and Donald Valentine (Sequoia). His prose is well-balanced between commentary and primary data, and this book will serve as a good primer on the VC world for those that are seeking either VC cash or employment.
If you fall in either category, you should consider purchasing the book. Among other things, you'll learn the following:
(1) Venture capitalism is a competitive industry where VCs are effectively "money salesmen" selling money in exchange for a equity stake
(2) The Internet is not a technological revolution but simply a new communications medium. In that way, it was appropriate that there were a spate of ideas generated by MBAs with no technical background, because the Internet is a marketing revolution rather than a technical one.
(3) The personality of the entrepreneur is critical. In particular, VCs look for energy, conviction, and above average intelligence ("smarter than the average bear"). Educational pedigree matters because it's just another filter the person has gone through.
(4) VCs are willing to step in and make changes. Zygmont cites the common example of Donald Valentine (Sequoia) replacing the founders of Cisco with more able managers.
(5) VCs have specific domain expertise (the "big picture knowledge" about an industry including the trends and competitive pressures that an entrepreneur might not be aware of.
(6) VCs market themselves as well as the companies that are parts of their portfolio. Zygmont raises the example of Ann Winblad's Tuesday Madness college business plan competition.
(7) Entrepreneurs must be optimistic. Izhar Armony (Charles River) in fact equates optimism with entrepreneurialism.
Unfortunately, the book does not target itself to the proto-venture capitalist or entrepreneur but instead the individual investor. Zygmont touts the book as a "precious resource for anyone who wants to imitate the strategies and successes of these money masters." I believe that this was a marketing mistake that was driven by the need to differentiate itself from the myriad VC 101 books on the market today and capitalize on the personal investment boom.
Be forewarned: VC investment strategies cannot be profitably be applied by the individual investor. By the author's own admission:
(1)"A venture capitalist is closer to the mutual fund manager than he is to the pick-your-own stock shopper, especially if you're talking about the manager of a focused fund." Only those with sufficient cash basis can afford to spread their money across the recommended 10 minimum investments.
(2) "Involvement and participation in the companies they invest in is key to top-shelf VCs". However, unless you are Warren Buffet, it is highly unlikely that you as a individual investor will be able to cajole your way into a company's board room.
Ergo, if you want to learn more about VCs and know very little about the industry, buy this book. If you are individual investor, however, I would find very little in this book to recommend.
Paul Erdos
Actually, A Variety of Ways.......2001-04-24
Zygmont offers "investment secrets from the wizards of venture capital" but I think the greater value of the book is the direct access it provides to the minds of various VC decision-makers as they interact with him in casual but remarkably candid conversation. "This book is about their methods." There are no "secrets", per se. "This book also compares [and contrasts] venture-investing rules and principles to general investing practices. The idea is to let general investors mine for insights that might help them when they're putting together their own portfolios." Zygmont organizes his material within 12 chapters and then offers his conclusions about "The Composite VC" followed by a list of VC firms and investor and entrepreneur resources. His formula is really very simple and straightforward: "Ask them." He interviewed a number of the most successful venture capitalists who, at the time of the interviews, were associated with the most prominent VC firms. What do they share in common other than the obvious (intelligence, courage, ability to tolerance risk, high energy level, etc.)? Commitment, idealism, honesty, charm, pride, and reverence (or humility). This book will be of greatest value to those who are preparing to seek venture capital, obviously, but can also be of substantial value to senior-level executives who ask this question: "What would a venture capitalist have to say about my company?" Although the responses from those whom Zygmont interviewed would probably vary, perhaps significantly, all would probably ask essentially the same questions before making an evaluation. If you share my high regard for this book, I urge you to check out Done Deals and Inside the Minds.
Book Description
Inside the Minds: The Ways of the VC is the most authoritative book ever written on the essentials behind success within the venture capital world - for VCs and entrepreneurs, alike. This title features Principals, Partners and Directors from some of the nation's leading VC firms, who have each contributed chapters akin to objective, experience-related white papers or essays on the core issues surrounding the VC industry. In an over-arching as well as in-depth presentation of the fundamentals, authors articulate the unspoken rules and the important issues facing any VC, and those important to entrepreneurs, what holds true now and what will into the future. From outlining the ideal business idea to company valuation, from identifying red flags and knowing when to ask the tough questions, this book pulls readers through all facets of venture capital, from beginning to end. The different niches represented and the various perspectives presented enable readers to really get inside the great minds of venture capital and pull practical advice, as the experts go back to basics in a must-read for anyone interested in this ever-evolving industry.

A Great Look at Valuations & VC Investments.......2003-08-26
This book features 10 different "essays" on how each individual values a company, decides whether to make an investment, and where opportunity is in the marketplace. This is a great read for everyone from a novice entrepreneur to an experienced venture capitalist - I can guarantee you will take something of value away from the book (I was a VC for 12 years at Kleiner Perkins).

Just a compilation.......2007-05-17
The title of the book is too ambitious woth respect to waht is really inside.
Book Description
Millions of years before the Age of Dinosaurs, an environmental cataclysm annihilated 90 percent of all plant and animal life on the planet. In this lost world that was swept away 250 million years ago, the ferocious lizard-like Gorgon was the T. rex of its day. In this remarkable journey of discovery deep into Earth's history, Peter D. Ward, one of the world's most recognized authorities on mass extinctions, examines the strange and mysterious fate of this little-known prehistoric animal and its contemporariesthe ancestors of the turtle, the crocodile, the lizard, and eventually the dinosaur. Based on more than a decade's research in South Africa's Karoo Desert, Ward's groundbreaking work offers provocative theories on the mass extinctions of the past and confronts the startling implications they hold for humanity's future on the planet.
Customer Reviews:
Well written but just an autobiography.......2007-04-05
Ward loses a momentous scientific theory under a book about his personal trivia and self-involvement. Managed to get in quite a few snarky comments about people he's supposed to be best friends with, too.
I didn't learn anything and the Gorgon in the title was barely in the story.
Too Much Personal Trivia--Not Enough Paleontology.......2007-03-17
When the Permian began nearly 300 million years ago, the earth was ripe for animal growth. The oxygen content was high and the age of reptiles was just beginning to compete with their amphibian forebears. There was a massive increase in life of all kinds. The promise for a continuity of life seemed unlimited. Then in seemingly a geological wink of the eye, the earth became virtually inhospitable for all species. For those like myself who wish to know the what and the why of the Permian Extinction, Peter Ward's GORGON held a similar bright promise of shedding light on a mystery that far predated the even quicker exit of the dinosaurs. Ward's book, sorry to say, does not live up to its hype.
Most of GORGON relates his various journeys to the Karoo in South Africa over a decade long search to learn the answer to the question that perplexed us both: why did the earth become very nearly as inhospitable to life as the moon? Ward details the trying times that he, his wife, and his crewmates faced when they battled the elements, the natives, and a far from co-operative Afrikaans regime that was then being rent apart by civil rights issues that resulted in its collapse. We read of the bugs, the heat, the many sleepness nights, the frigid cold, and his inability to ascertain the true cause of the Extinction. All of this may have been fascinating to those readers who enjoy the human side of a story that leads to scientific advancement. But in this case, there was far too much of the former and hardly any of the latter. It was not until the very last chapter that Ward gets to the nitty-gritty of his book. He writes of a supercontinent that was plagued by the one-two punch of dropping levels of oxygen and the poisonous effluvia of volcanic ash from the Siberian traps. Since the fossil record suggests the extreme speed with which these confluent events overlapped, there was no time, historically speaking, for the world's species to adjust. Thus they died out. And the Gorgon of the title, a magnificent beast brought alive by the computer animations of the Discovery Channel, Ward relegates to the most superficial of symbols, a bystander who much like many of the readers of this book could hardly have understood what forces of nature were buffeting them. For a more balanced and informative view of the same topic, I suggest WHEN LIFE NEARLY DIED by Michael Benton. In this book, the Gorgon takes its rightful place at the top of the food chain.
GORGON, the process........2007-02-19
Nothing that I have read immerses you more vividly in the gritty process of sample collection and processing, and the need to go out again to redo what you completely finished at least twice before. The author does not have to say a word about the prospect of someone pursuing quick fame wanting to rework your hard-fought samples from academic offices. Finding GORGON itself was led to by a related venture running into on the spot obstacles. Later GORGON is found to be not quite GORGON. Peter Ward includes a brief statement of his newest theory that some body types evolved in low-oxygen in which the problem of respiration dominates.
Amazing detective story.......2006-11-24
This wonderful book reads like a detective "who-dunnit" story, including some unsuspected plot twists and a surprising conclusion. The "crime" is the mass extinction at the end of the Permian age, and the detective is a geologist searching a hostile African desert for clues.
This book weaves science with emotion, describing both the research as well as the lives and adventures of scientists dedicated to solving the mystery of what happened to a world that existed before the dinosaurs, some 250 million years ago.
A bit more could have been included on the animals of the late Permian, and some sketches of what they looked like when alive would have been helpful. Nevertheless, one of the best books on palaeontology and science I have ever read.
Scientific Advancement involves People.......2006-06-26
Previous reviewers seem disappointed with the fusion of people, politics, and NSF grants with "the science". But, I found this to be an important part of the appeal of the book. As a former engineer on groundbreaking developments in signal processing in the satellite industry, I realize that exciting discoveries usually involve incremental progress, a lot of toil, a few "ah-ha" moments, paperwork, and false starts. By painting the discoveries, as they unfolded, you get a real feeling about how the science really advanced. I, for one, very much enjoyed reading about how the experiments had to be conducted and independently verified by multiple parties or at different locations. I commiserated with the tensions between great thinkers, and really admired the dedication and professionalism of the particpants. As for South Africa -- the discussion of the changing politics there only served to emphasize the risks these folks took going out to the field (or leaving their families behind in S. African urban centers). Bravo to Peter Ward for giving us the nitty gritty.
Book Description
Presented in two volumes, The Physics of Astrophysics is ideally suited for a year-long astrophysics course for university seniors and first-year graduate students. This second volume deals with the interactions of matter and radiation, and electromagnetic fields of macroscopic scale in both the strongly collisional and collisionless regimes. It covers such fields as single-fluid theory, including radiative processes; waves, shocks, and fronts; magnetohydrodynamics and plasma physics; as well as their applications to such topics as self-gravitating spherical masses, accretion disks, spiral density waves, star formation, and dynamo theory. Over two hundred photos, line drawings, and tables amplify the major points of the text.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2000-05-26
I was very dissapointed to see a rating on this book of only two little stars, so I've decided to express my opinion as well, for I believe this book deserves a much better qualification. The book gives an excellent overview in many of the most important aspects of the theory of gas dynamics as applied to astrophysics. The clarity with which the author expresses the underlying physical phenomena is amazing. You even find it "easy" the way in which fluid equations are deduced by taking the different momenta of the statistical distribution function of the fluid, or why a supersonic flow governed by a hyperbolic PDE is converted to a subsonic one governed by an elliptic PDE after passage through a shock wave in the stationary case. It's true that it doesn't go into too much detail; if it would, the book should have been at least of the size of the "Gravitation" (by Misner, Thorne and Wheeler) and it wouldn't easily fit anywhere. However, the references to excellent books on all the touched subjects have been meticulously selected and should be consulted by anyone interested in expanding the knowledge on any specific topic of the ones covered by the book. And for your curiosity, if you want to know whether Mr. Shu is a competent astrophysicist or not, just go to the Astronomical Data Service online and search for his name. You'll discover quite a big number of high quality papers on different subjects...
Not very good intro to subject.......1999-09-29
When I had this book for a class in graduate school, I found that it never really helped me with any of the problems, and in general did not describe the topics well at all. I would recommend sticking to Rybicki and Lightman for a much better exposition.
