Book Description
This groundbreaking book views conflict as a mirror of our own lives and attitudes. Bringing East and West together in a "spiritually practical" approach to negotiation and conflict prevention, The Tao of Negotiation teaches us how to regain and maintain our sense of personal power in all forms of negotiation and how to use that power wisely and compassionately--with the aim of maximizing harmony and understanding in our business and personal lives. Readers can immediately use the techniques in The Tao Negotiation to improve communication skills, defuse potential conflicts, and pave the way for peaceful and rewarding interactions in their business and personal lives.

Invaluable Ideas - Not-So-Hot Title.......2005-01-02
There's a Tao of everything. If you've run a search on Amazon for "tao" then you've seen it. Tao of Physics. Tao of Power. Tao of Tacos (believe me, it's coming). Like many others, this book refers to the Tao but doesn't really base its ideas on anything one could reasonably call Taoism. It's a similar theme, but not quite the same.
That doesn't mean that the content isn't any good, though.
If I were ever to become a manager, a negotiator or a business professor, I would make this book required readong to all of my subordinates/students. In fact, I might make my whole family read it. The basic concepts are so incredibly simple, and yet so often forgotten.
I started applying concepts in this book right after I read them. You have to see it to believe it. Need an extension on my paper? Done. Need to have a difficult discussion with the parents? Done. Need to resolve issues with the roommate? Not so successful on that one. That's really the one major flaw - the author assumes that the other person actually cares about your feelings once you lay them out on the table and show yourself as the vulnerable human being you are. Some people don't think that way. I suggest a baseball bat when negotiating with them.
At any rate, this book really can help you do what it promises - to prevent, resolve and transcend conflict in work and everyday life. And don't think it's going to gloss over the various issues you may have. After discussing the general philosophy, the book breaks into chapters upon chapters dealing with conflict in every area you could possibly imagine - at work, with your loved one, with customer service, even with yourself.
Poor title and psychopaths aside, this book will dramatically change your life through one simple concept - forgetting about victory and focusing on true understanding.
Waging peace.......2003-02-20
One of my hats says "mediator" on it. And in that capacity, I count this as one of my most useful books.
It's not exactly about mediation, or at least it's not a how-to book for mediators. At bottom it's about how to nip conflicts in the bud by not letting the dangerous sort of conflict arise in yourself in the first place.
That's what makes this such a helpful book for mediators. Joel Edelman is convinced that it takes two people to let a conflict get out of hand; if _either one_ of them is ready, willing, and able to try to resolve it, it will usually resolve. And as a lawyer who helped to pioneer the field of mediation, he's got plenty of experience to support his claim.
There's plenty of good advice in this well-written book (and by the way, Mary Beth Crain shares credit for its well-written-ness). In essence it amounts to this: external conflicts arise because, somewhere, there's an internal conflict we've allowed to get out of hand. And in order to get it back _into_ hand, we may have to do some difficult inner work. We're generally not as self-aware, and therefore also not as aware of each other, as we probably think we are; the signals we think we're receiving from other people are often echoes of the vibes we're putting out ourselves.
At any rate, this book isn't just for mediators. It's for anybody at all who wants some practical/spiritual advice about dealing with, and preventing, the toxic sort of conflict -- the poison-spewing kind that demands a "win-lose" outcome. Win-win resolutions are generally possible, but only if we each take responsibility for our own thoughts and actions and don't make our satisfaction depend on what the other person does.
Good stuff. Trust the process.

Book Description
The essays in this book examine the long history of the international financial system in terms of the current debate about globalization and its limits. In the nineteenth century, international markets existed without international institutions. In the interwar years, attempts (largely unsuccessful) at designing a genuine international trade and monetary system were made at the same time (coincidentally) that the system collapsed. In the post-1945 era, the intended design effort was infinitely more successful. The development of large international capital markets since the 1960s, however, increasingly frustrated attempts at international control.
Book Description
Dr. Asouzu critically examines the arbitral and alternative dispute resolution (ADR) processes in the African context, processes that are often seen as potential facilitators of commercial activities, socio-economic development and prosperity in Africa. Asouzu discusses the OHADA Uniform Arbitration Regime, the Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards (the New York Convention), the Convention on the Settlement of Investment Disputes between States and Nationals of other States (the ICSID Convention), as well as African arbitration laws, their interpretation and application. An extensive bibliography is included.
Download Description
International Commercial Arbitration and African States is a timely assessment of the arbitral process in the African context. The book focuses on the contribution that arbitration, and other methods of alternative dispute resolution, may make to the development of African states and peoples, while satisfying the legitimate expectations of inward investors and traders. Although focusing on dispute resolution regimes affecting or concerning African states and their nationals, the work will also have practical, policy and comparative implications for dispute resolution, commercial arbitration and foreign investment in other regions.

Book Description
Completely revised and updated for its second edition, this volume belongs to the Open University series on oceanography. It is designed so that it can be read on its own or studied as part of the Open University third-level course, S330 Oceanography.
The book begins by describing the characteristics of waves and tides, and their behaviour in shallow water. After outlining the sources of sediment supply to the oceans, some theoretical aspects of sediment movement and deposition by currents are considered. After looking at wave action in the littoral zone, the interplay of tidal currents, river flow and wave action in estuaries and deltas are explored. The final chapter provides an overview of shelf processes.
This is a vital book for all oceanography undergraduate students worldwide.

A Better Understanding of the Coastal Environment.......2001-04-03
As one of the Open University Oceanography Series, this book offers an excellent introduction to the physical processes operating in the nearshore and immediate offshore environments of the coastal zone. With a particular emphasis on the relationship between process and form, this work covers essential ideas and practical applications for university level instructors and students interested in the coastal environment. The book material is straightforward, readable, and offers the opportunity to develop fundamental research questions at a variety of levels. Best of all, it's a well-organized work at an affordable price.

Book Description
This Second Edition provides solid state scientists, who are not necessarily experts in crystallography, with an understandable and comprehensive guide to the new International Tables for Crystallography. The basic ideas of symmetry, lattices, point groups, and space groups are explained in a clear and detailed manner. Notation is introduced in a step-by-step way so that the reader is supplied with the tools necessary to derive and apply space group information. Of particular interest in this second edition are the discussions of space groups application to such timely topics as high-temperature superconductors, phase transitions, semiconductor superlattices, incommensurate modulation, and icosahedral symmetry.
Key Features
* Explains the use of space groups to non-crystallographers
* Applies space groups to current topics, such as high-temperature superconductors and phase transitions
* Includes extensive appendixes, covering all aspects of space groups, including incommensurate modulations and disorder
Customer Reviews:
Not for beginners.......2004-11-01
If you have never taken a basic crystallography course then this book will not make any sense. Although the authors attempt to make crystallography understandable, they fail miserably. Their style is very fractured and there is little transition between chapters so it seems as if nothing is connected. In short, the book makes perfect sense if you are ALREADY a crystallographer, but if you are new to the field then I would recommend some other text.
Best pedagogical book on Space Groups.......2003-06-05
This book provides a good, clear introduction to Space Groups that will make using International Tables straightforward. The applications are almost entirely crystallographic (very few applications to solid state physics), but a reader can move to that area after studying this book.
I like this treatment better than any I've seen for graduate students and practicing nontheorists.
An excellent book for applied scientists & engineers.......1999-02-17
If I needed to characterize this book in a single word, I would say...excellent. Space groups are a rather abstract discipline in crystallography and hence, many books dealing with the subject are usually very theoretical. Burns' book is written for the applied scientist or engineer who needs a working knowledge on a sophisticated concept such as Space groups. The book is structured in a quite pedagogical style which lends itself to a pleasant self-study perfectly well. Worked-out examples are plenty which helps the reader to familiarize him/herself with the use of the International Tables for Crystallography. The level of the treatment is elementary, yet its scope is comprehensive and the treatment is rigorous. The book is ideally suited for those working in the solid state sciences.
excellent for the beginner.......1998-06-22
Great book for the beginner who does'nt know very much about space groups or the International tables. The book goes through and shows you examples and step by step of what all that stuff means. It's got some examples at the end, but I skipped that. One annoying thins about this book is that all the settings are in 1st setting for monoclinic so you get p21/a instead of the standard p21/c. If you become a crystallographer you'll know what I mean. Besides that though, it's a great book, very easy reading. Recommended for the beginner.

Customer Reviews:
An enlightening book which opens my eyes of the twentieth century!.......2005-07-25
Janet Flanner was no ordinary writer. She writes beautifully and intellectually about life in Europe between two World Wars and afterwards. While she died in 1978 in New York City with her longtime friend and part-time lover, Natalia Danesi Murray, she never discusses her love life but her observations are astute and important as they ever was. For example, when she writes about Adolf Hitler in 1936, she examines his relationships and the rumors of his homosexuality which are just rumors. There was never anything to indicate he was sexual with anybody. She examines his life, his relationships, and gives us a preview of the monster he became during World War II. She knows so much but I think she was very considerate and very aware of the audience. I hope now we can all appreciate Janet Flanner now more than ever. While I only give it 4 stars is because there are no pictures in the book except on the cover and that is the only reason why. If you ever want to enlighten yourself about Europe from an excellent American writer, you might find yourself drawn to Janet Flanner's writings.
fascinating but uneven.......2000-08-21
In some ways, history must be easier to write than journalism, because the historian knows what happened; he or she knows what to emphasize. Perhaps most of today's journalism will turn out to be irrelevant; perhaps we are all focussed on the wrong issues. How interesting then to read journalism from the past that seems so valuable. In this collection, dating from 1932 to 1975, Janet Flanner proves to be a brilliant observer of the events of her day. She was a well known writer for the New Yorker who spent many of these years in Europe. Her account of "Mrs Jeffries" escape from Paris in 1943 gives the reader a vivid and unusual picture of life in occupied and Vichy France.
In general, she seems to be better with descriptions of events, narrative, atmosphere, politics, than with descriptions of people. Her account of Thomas Mann is odd and her profiles of Hollywood people are also a bit jarring. On the other hand, her descriptions of Alice Toklas, Margaret Anderson, and Sylvia Beach are all excellent.
