Good quality book.......2007-09-23
This book was an excellent look at myself. After I had taken the MBTI this book gave me insight that I otherwise wouldn't have had. It was funny to read quotes made by others who share my typology and saying... oh yeah I've said that. Well written, easy to read. A good resource for anyone looking to expand on their knowledge of the MBTI especially in work relationships.
Get into the What behind the everyday strife.......2007-03-13
Get ready for insight into the world of people around you.
This book is a start into seeing why people act the way they do. Be careful not to label... just use it as a tool and you will find great reward in this plie of information.
Why is it that your employee, boss, co-worker acts the way they do? Pick up this book. Get informed.
Great way to Manage People.......2007-01-05
This book is a fabulous book for managers. I am the regional for several stores, and the biggest complaints from employees are of people not getting along. In assessing the complaints with the help of this book, I realized it was due to miscommunication, and perceiving a person of a differnt "Type" wrong. This book explaines each type and some common tendencies of each. It also has strategies and solutions for developing the opposite style you have to be able to communicate with all types of people. For example, if you tend to be an "F" or Feeler (using emotions to make decisions), there are pages of strategies to help develope the opposite side (the "T", or Thinker) without compromising your own personality. I have used this book in mediation and arguments with fabulous results, just by having the employees read the other person's type and knowing where they are coming from.
Can't we all just get along!.......2005-08-19
This book with mainly two things in mind: communication and understanding. The author's adopt their longstanding research about the world of typewatching into an intelligible book about the main areas of the work environment such as problem solving, conflict resolution, time management, etc.
Any manager that has direct reports would do themselves a favor by reading this book. This book will also provide support for a subordinate that doesn't quite "fit in." For those hurried types, each chapter ends with guidlines in a charted format for working with those of other preferences. Although this is somewhat useful, what I don't like about the approach is that they focus on the four preferences instead of focusing on the four major groupings, forcing the reader to combine and study the effects. For example, the charts will explain how an E should lead an I, etc. I believe that it would be much more useful to categorize the charts by the four major groups (e.g. NF's, NT's, SJ's, SP's) and how to interact with other types in each subject area.
To the author's credit, the book does provide an overview on the major strengths and potential weaknesses of each of the 16 types in the workplace, for those who aren't familiar with the MBTI. However, it does not really provide a concrete method of determining type, leaving the reader somewhat guessing with the use of anecdotal phrases.
Overall, I find this book well worth the investment. However, I would not recommend this book as an introduction to typewatching. If you are familiar with type, the specific chapters will be meaningful, if not, pick up either the precursor to this book by the same author's or one of David Keirsey's works prior to reading this.
Better tool for self understanding than controlling others.......2005-05-26
Kroeger and Thuesen are not my favorite MBTI authors, but the Type Talk books are a decent reference for those who consider themselves beginner and intermediate level in the personality theory world. The explanations of the four preferences and how to look for them in one's own self or in others is reasonably well done. I particularly liked how they borrowed from Keirsey's theory and delineated the NT/NF/SP/SJ categories. They do not delve far into the dominant/auxilary/tertiary/inferior functions.
Type Talk at Work explains how people of different types set goals, manage time, hire and fire, resolve conflict, solve problems, and deal with other workplace issues. The range of topics was pretty comprehensive, although by necessity a bit superficial. Given the length of the book the explanation of how different types interact was well done, and had some case studies also. I was not very impressed with the 'Z Problem Solving Model', but it may benefit someone else. The best part of the book is the last part, entitled 'The Sixteen Profiles At Work'. The Sixteen Profiles section details how all of the types tend to think and behave in a workplace setting. I'm sure many people will be amazed at how accurate it can be for them. Type Talk at Work is defintely meant to promote self knowledge, which the authors stress is the first duty of the reader: know yourself well, then try to figure other people out.
I have two criticisms: firstly, the authors are NFs, and in my view did not altogether avoid unconsciously writing the book for other NFs. That is a minor criticism, as the book overall is well done. I also believe that Kroeger and Thuesen did not warn readers to properly use type theory, in other words use it in a very careful, ethical way. The book is very dangerous in the wrong hands and misuse of knowledge and information about someone can and does happen in the business world. The reader needs to know that sharing this type of information can be very risky.
I don't mind recommending the book, particularly because a type book regarding the workplace is badly needed and I'm not aware of any others. econ

Customer Reviews:
Fascinating and useful.......2001-11-23
I loved this book. I read it after Lifetypes. It takes the information on type and applies it to the workplace. I found the book helped me get a handle on why I do things the way I do, and it gave me insight into some of my colleagues. The writing is clear, and the descriptions are sufficiently detailed. The author covers all the relevant workplace topics, such as time management, problem solving, communication, and conflict resolution. The descriptions of the different types were really useful even if you've read other books on Type.
Beware - you have now been labeled........2001-04-05
I'm an ISFJ. If you work in cooperate America, perhaps you have heard someone say this of themselves? Oh yes, your name and personality have now been condensed into 4 letters.
This is a fun book to casually read - like your horoscope in the newspaper. Beware though - MBTI zealots are everywhere. I have actually known people who have not gotten jobs based on their "type"
Maybe George Orwell was correct?
a bit gimmicky for my taste.......2000-09-16
Granted there are many good insights within the pages of this book. But if you made it to where you are in life and you never realized that people in organizations have many different learning styles, you must be a bit slow on the uptake. The authors of this book give us one way to understand and quantify how people are different. An "extrovert" might throw out 10 ideas, but only mean one of them to be serious, while an "introvert" might keep an idea to himself rather than risk ridicule. No doubt the seminars they do with companies make workers and leaders more aware of how others respond around them and that is of course a good thing. Though I found the book enjoyable reading, oftentimes it seemed too generalized or overcategorized. In short, it certainly doesn't hurt to acknowledge that that are many different types in the workplace, but you don't need to study the 16 combinations to really make yourself that much more of an expert about it. This being said, the authors do offer lots of helpful advice for how to deal with those who are very opposite to your type.
Please Understand Me is better.......1999-08-11
David Keisey's book is a mult-million best seller for over 20 years. These descriptions do not have as nearly as much depth. David portrays the types from a much better perspective. I understand that this is work application but Keirsey's are much better.
Parts were very good, and parts were not so good.......1999-04-28
Much of the information was useful, and some of the profiles were quite good, but some of the profiles were off.

Book Description
Among the major innovations in the financial markets have been interest rate swaps and swapations, instruments which entail having an arrangement to barter differently structured payment flows for a particular period of time. These instruments have furnished portfolio and risk managers and corporate treasurers with a better tool for controlling interest rate risk. Valuation of Interest Rate Swaps and Swapations explains how interest rate swaps are valued and the factors that affect their value-an ideal way to manage interest or income payments. Various valuations approaches and models are covered, with special end-of-chapter questions and solutions included.
Customer Reviews:
Very clear and detailed explanations.......2006-06-03
I dont work for a trading desk, but work for IT that supports the trading desk and needed to understand the workings of swap pricing etc. This book gives a very clear explanation of how to price a swap at inception and through the life of the swap agreement. It ties all together volatility, swap curve/term structure of interest rates etc. If you were looking for a more detailed explanation and are actually going to be trading swaps then this is probably not the book.
excellent book , very clear........2006-03-30
I trade derivatives, and this book was amazing to get me started in the valuation of IRS and swaptions. It provides very clear steps used to value an IRS from a sting of libor futures. It describes the swaption valuation with an introduction to binomial trees in a very simmple manner. Everything is explained very clearly and takes you through the math step by step. I own more than 10 books that describe the valuation of an IRS and by far this is the best.
Is this book a joke?.......2005-03-15
A book written on "valuation of swaps and swaptions" is obviously not for the lay man. I was extremely disappointed to go through this book, which seems to be fit for 5th graders. It's a shame that a supposed leading thinker like Fabozzi can write such a shallow, meaningless book. Mr. Fabozzi, please name one practitioner who cares to use this good-for-nothing book of yours. Perhaps a better title for the book would have been, "Swaps and swaptions for dummies".
Educational use only.......2004-06-05
The book is terrific for a classroom setting. It is far easier to understand the interactions between valuation inputs (term structure, volatility, level of rates, etc) than any other book in the market. The use of the lattice approach is great - and very original. Most students find the lattice approach more easy to understand and therefore more able to better understand these instruments. The book is not designed for a swap dealer by any stretch of the imagination. I have used it in a training program several times with great effect.
Not worth spending money.......2004-02-04
Like all other Fabozzi books this one also just scratches the surface of the topic (swap and swaptions) with text book style examples which are not seen in real world. He starts with an example where both the fixed and floating leg of a swap is semiannual and actual/360 which is not the case of US Swaps and nowhere through out the book he discusses how to deal with different day counts (30/360 & actual/360) in the fixed and floating legs as well as different payment styles (semianually for fixed and quarterly for floating). Anyone who is trying to build a swap valuation tool will realize the importance of the above meniotned topics which is not covered in this book. Even a slight change in numbers can change the P&L by several hundred thousand dollars as the notional are generally upwards of 100 million. This book may be good for an undergrad student who is taking the first course in finance and trying to understand what a swap is. But even then it will facilitate only an abstract theoretical knowledge which he/she will never be able to relate to in real world swaps. Avoid this book, it's a waste of your hard earned money.
Book Description
In two 1997 decisions, the Supreme Court ruled that there is no constitutional right to physician-assisted suicide. Yet for many people this concept strikes to the heart of our sense of liberty even as it tugs at our hearts in the face of human suffering.
Lethal Judgments examines those cases, the law surrounding the plaintiffs' claims, and the moral debate over physician-assisted suicide. A concise and gracefully written overview of one of the most complex and contentious areas of American law, it lays out the conflict between individuals supporting privacy rights, due process, and equal protection, and those for whom moral and ethical considerations trump such concepts.
Noted constitutional scholar Melvin Urofsky discusses the tangled legal, historical, ethical, and medical issues related to right-to-die arguments, then examines the Supreme Court's position in Washington v. Glucksberg and Quill v. Vacco. He shows how these 1997 cases relate to two other famous cases--Karen Ann Quinlan and Nancy Beth Cruzan--and carries the controversy up to the recent trials of Dr. Jack Kevorkian. Urofsky considers the many facets of this knotty argument. He differentiates between discontinuation of medical treatment, assisted suicide, and active euthanasia, and he sensitively examines the issue's social and religious contexts to enable readers to see both sides of the dispute. He also shows that in its ruling the Supreme Court did not slam the door on the subject but left it ajar by allowing states to legislate on the matter as Oregon has already done.
By treating assisted suicide simply as a legal question, observes Urofsky, we miss the real importance of the issue. For patients with AIDS, cancer, and other debilitating illnesses--or even for those feeble from age--physician-assisted suicide is an expression of personal autonomy, and as modern medicine learns new ways to prolong life, more and more people will seek to exercise this option. Because right-to-die cases are likely to come before the high court again, this book provides students and general readers with a timely appreciation of their importance for legal theory and a useful way to reflect upon the choice between life and death.

Book Description
Over 1000 people have attended the three-day course on which this book is based since it was instituted in 1981 by JAPEC (Joint Association for Petroleum Exploration Courses). Key topics covered in this book are: the underlaying rationale for exploration; essential basic geological and geophysical exploration techniques; drilling and logging wells; an outline of reservoir geology and what constitutes reserves; and all of these topics are brought together in a case-history overview of exploration in the North Sea. The book is fully self-explanatory, needs no prior knowledge of geology or of exploration techniques, and as much as possible avoids the use of technical jargon. There is, however, a lengthy glossary of technical terms that can be used as a reference. The appeal of the book extends far beyond the audience originally envisaged for the JAPEC course. Anyone interested in finding out what petroleum exploration is all about will enjoy this volume.

A clear description of the nature of physical reality.......2007-05-16
You become an expert on the nature of statistics and finally end up comprehending the nature of what it is that we perceive as opposed to what may lie beyond those perceptions (if anything).
I personally used the content in 1960's when formulating a theory of data processing that later became known as entity-relationship, as his treatment of relationships and objects and characteristics were so clear and translated to entity, data-element, relationship ideas.
I called the idea "construct, relationship" but was later overcome by the pseudo-intellectual community that confused the concept of entity with construct.
Prof. Morganau made it clear: A construct is our concept of what exists as a function of our sensory inputs. An entity is what (if anything) actually (whatever that means) exists.
In a practical application, that means that if we have an Employee file, the entries are constructs. Whether or not there is an actual employee in real life depends on the accuracy of our database.
Of course, the work was published long before data processing, so I am interpreting it in modern terms that Prof. Morganau might find simplistic or even false, but if you read it today, you will see what I mean.
The work does not bog down with concepts such as "meaning", much less religion. It focuses on what is in our brains (constructs) as opposed to any possible external "reality" that may or may not exist.
Constructs are valid! If I see a heavy bowling ball and drop it on my foot, I will experience pain and misery for a long time. Fact.
Is there really a bowling ball? Do I really have a foot?
Who cares? It hurts like crazy!
That is the point.

Book Description
Arguably the most widely read work of Chilean Literature, Martin Rivas (1862) by Alberto Blest Gana (1830-1920) is at once a passionate love story and a keenly observed portrait of the manners and customs of nineteenth-century Chile. Martin Rivas, an impoverished but ambitious young man from the northern mining region of Chile, is entrusted by his late father to the household of a wealthy and influential member of the Santiago elite. While living there, he falls in love with his guardian's daughter. A poor provincial, Martin perceives his situation to be hopeless, so he immediately sets about improving his financial and social station. Along the way, he bears witness to the wide range of social and moral strata within Chilean society. Filled with unerring social portraits, animated dialogue, and sharply drawn characters, Martin Rivas is an engagingly spontaneous and a charmingly romantic novel that illustrates the enriching influences that romanticism had on nineteenth-century Chilean literature. This distinguished edition includes an introduction by Jaime Concha, situating the novel in historical context and providing both important biographical information on the author and a subtle literary analysis of the text.

A must for a romantic mind.......2003-01-14
This is the book about romanticism, deep class separation, politics and honesty in the Chile of 1850, The hero shows all the points of his flawless character in the context of a full ethics approach to relationships, It will make an spectacular gift for teens and persons of teen heart because it included a passionate love story with optimistic message for all.
Additionally the political events that form part of the novel are real, and will provide a deep knowledge of political forces in a just-born Country.
I read it when I was teen, I reread for my fifty birthday, always with watery of eyes.....
