I have always been a successful business woman but I have never felt fully fulfilled. I knew that although I was making great money and climbing up the corporate ladder that there had to be more to explore inside my field...not just inside my own mind. This book taught me the importance of having a mentor, since reading this book I have found a woman who inspires me and teaches me how to be better, happier, and more passionate every single day. Perhaps you already have a mentor but I guarantee that you will not read this and walk away empty handed.

Entertaining, a good reminder, but not life changing.......2005-06-03

Overall this book was solid - It was a good reminder on solid career tactics, it was good for a kick in the pants to get a career-ambitious woman moving, and it was fairly fun to read. It was not life changing. There were no big secrets that everyone needs to know.

One of my favorite things about the book was reading some of the stories that made me realize my career objectives, my ambition, and the way that I think about things aren't entirely unheard of. Sometimes I feel alone, like few others have the same perspective on setting sights high and progressively climbing towards that objective. It was nice to read testimonials of women who are an awful lot like me. It was also nice to know that my mindset is not found in everyone and that it has the potential to take me places.

There is good, solid advice, humor, and some inspiration. I do not feel, however, like a new person, like huge questions have been answered, or that I am now prepared to make my future a reality in an unprecidented manner and in an incredibly short amount of time.

On the other hand, it was enjoyable to read and I'm glad that I did!

Encouraging ways to create your career.......2005-04-18

First off, the layout of Nicole William's "Wildly Sophisticated" makes it a fun read. In terms of context, William's spotlights many of the career-doubts and self-doubts that women in all stages of their career struggle with, such as childbearing and quitting a hated job.

Reading "Wildly Sophisticated" was like sitting in on a conversation with women eager to enhance their careers, yet confused by conflicting feelings of undeserving success, short-selling themselves, and questioning whether they are doing enough or too much.

William's layout includes inspiring quotes from actresses and "great thinkers" that help reinforce the message of her book- you are responsible for your career success. The "strategy" area adds practicality as she gives her readers immediate steps for fortifying their career path. With the "Career Confessions" section, Williams reminds every woman that she is not alone in her journey to at-once have everything she desires, most specifically a fulfilling career.

If you are baffled with your career path or need to talk over your career plans, but no one is listening, pick up "Wildly Sophisticated". William's honest anecdotes easers the lonesome yoke of feeling like a career looser, while inviting women to a world where risk, embarrassment and failure are essential for success. I'm still reading this book and with all of it's tips and pointers, it's great to have advice just lying in wait around the house! Plus, this book will motivate you into action, because it helps you explore your true desires in your career quest. If you're looking for something to inspire you to action, this book just may be it.

I found the book to be helpful on a number of fronts, particularly the coworker interaction tidbits and the fashion tips.

Coming from a relatively sheltered small town, learning all those fancy big-city sophisticated ways that the rest of the company executives have can be hard. While some of the tips in this book were baffling (like the whole section on how sexy you should be; why is this relevant to my career?), most of this book was great.

Seasonal trading doesn't work like it used to.......2003-03-07

Most seasonal trading is already factored into the price, right before the season starts. Something like 2 out of 10 seasonal trades work nowadays. Technical Analysis has eliminated many of the seasonal signals.

In fact it is prohibited by the National Futures Association for brokers to even discuss or promote on the basis of seasonal trading. That says a lot to me.

In the past 11 years I have been a futures broker, futures investor, and author of several futures books and I tell all of my clients not to rely on seasonal trades. And if they do follow seasonal trades use tight stops for when the market goes against you.

Decent theory - Not alot of practical trading strategies.......2000-05-04

I was expecting alot more from someone referred to as the foremost authority on seasonality in the futures markets. While I give Jake alot of credit for bringing greater visibility to seasonal trading strategies through his earlier research from the late 70s on, this book was somewhat of a disappointment. My first concern is that a large portion of his data modeling is based off of cash market data. While this often allows one a much greater data pool to tap which in turn can assist in lending statistical significance to apparent patterns, I have to question the validity of this approach since as most traders know, futures prices often diverge significantly from those of the cash market. There are no clear trading rules elucidated for particular seasonals, and individual contract months are not well touched on. In addition, while technical filters are mentioned, there is no clear integration with seasonals. For anyone actually interested in trading seasonals with very clear rules spelled out with specific seasonals based on individual contract months, I would highly recommend John Momsen's "UltraReliable Seasonal Trades." While I haven't traded Momsen's methods long enough to draw a 100% conclusion, I've already made significant profits with his systems. This text didn't add enough workable knowledge to warrant the price IMHO. It does however provide some decent info on performing your own seasonal research by data mining...

Good for pork bellies but very little on stocks.......1999-09-11

Mostly concerned with the commodities and futures markets. Interesting, lots of charts and tables, but the only information on stocks is a table on page 87 showing that from Jan 1897 to Dec 1983 the Dow Jones Industrial Average posted a gain 68.1% of the time the day before an important holiday and 52.2% of the time the day after. Good to know. It was something I had already recognized, but knowing that the day before is significantly better than the day after is worth while. Also Monday is the worse day of the week for stock prices. There's even a book entitled Don't Sell Stocks on Monday(1986) by Yale Hirsch.

A great book on how to combine seasonality and timing........1998-12-12

Jake Bernstein is the foremost authority on seasonality and this book clearly demonstrates the power of this approach. It is also an easy read for the beginning trader.

Worth getting but the price tag is somewhat high........2001-10-04

In the case of such reference books as the one reviewed here "Dynamics of Droplets", the whole purpose of buying the books depends on the need for it ie a particular reason. In my case I was interested in the splashing impact of water droplets on hard and liquid surfaces. It must be kept in mind that reference books are general references and not intended for a specific purpose. As such, this book provides a rudimentary introduction to my area of interest. It also covers the whole range of droplet interactions not only experimental results but the whole study of droplets experimental, theoretical and computational. A very wide introduction, based at times on the research of the two authors and their research institute.
Its good as a general introduction but don't expect too much in your area. Worth getting but the price tag is somewhat high.

In this paper, the transport characteristics of saliva droplets produced by coughing are examined in a calm indoor environment. Three subjects are studied, with results indicating that more than 6.7mg of saliva is expelled at speeds of up to 22m/s during each individual cough, and that saliva droplets can travel further than 2m. In addition, the dispersion processes of saliva droplets of different diameters expelled during coughing are analyzed using the Lagrangian equation. The results indicate that the transport characteristics of saliva droplets due to coughing change with size. The effects of gravity or inertia on droplets of 30@mm or less are negligible due to their small sizes, and therefore their transport is mostly influenced by the indoor flow field. Droplets of 50-200@mm, which are significantly affected by gravity, fall as the flow-field weakens. Droplets of 300@mm or more, which are affected more by inertia than gravity, fall difficultly. Moreover, the analytical results also indicate that the droplets' transport is greatly influenced by the spatial relationship between the air-conditioner and the subjects. Finally, based on the experimental and analytical results, droplet infection by saliva droplets due to coughing is examined.

Musil was an inveterate diarist; while the German edition of his journals is comprehensive, its translator and English-language editor, Phillip Payne, has chosen to be more selective. Gone are entries that summarize or excerpt the work of other authors; those that are "unintelligible to all but Musil experts"; early drafts of works that are not of particular interest; or entries that add little of significance to our understanding of Musil's life or work. What's left, however, is more than adequate, and provides a fascinating window into the life, times, and creative process of a literary master. The penetrating mind of R. Musil.......2000-11-27

As other commentators have said, Musil's diaries reveal this fascinating writer's process of thought, and are not filled with the usual "then he said something and we laughed and ordered another round" entries. In the regrettable absence of an autobiography or good biography, the _Diaries_ are a good substitute.

Musil's eye is at once poetic and objective. I could only be astounded by the maturity of the young artist. His description of a horse laughing, of sunset on windows, of a waterfall looking like a silver comb, of his emotions when he and his wife Martha argue, show a sensitivity sharpened by training. Musil captures things as they appear to him with a minimum of fussiness. Also, there is often a sharp humour which comes flashing out.

Some people don't like _The Man Without Qualities_ and prefer some of Musil's other writings. Whichever works one prefers, these diaries illuminate Musil and his writings from within.

I'll add two minor complaints about the layout of the book to those already voiced. I object to endnotes, believing footnotes easier to read. Why flip forward and back so often? Some of the endnotes are repetitive, and greater care should have been taken over them. But those are small things, and have more to do with editorial decisions than with Musil, who here steps forth from a kind of shadow (for english readers).

This book can't be recommended highly enough.

A helpful look into Musil's mind.......2000-08-31

The fascinating man becomes clearer through the pages of his notebooks, which are uneven in their quality but ultimately rewarding. A must for Musil fans seeking to understand the mind of the genius.

Excellent, yet inadequate.......2000-07-21

Robert Musil is one of the most complex and little known authors of the 20th Century. I am sure that anyone who has read "The Man without Qualities" will want to know more about Musil after getting to know his writing. Sadly, there is no adequate Biography available, even in German, so one of the best ways to get to know the Author is through his fascinating Diary. These were actually more Notebooks than Diaries, and they contain an encylopedic array of information on Musil himself, his intests, his ideas, and most interestingly his plans for the "Man without Qualities". So it is must reading for those interested in Musil. The English Translation Compilation, has two major flaws. First, it lacks an Index and other Critical Apparatus, and secondly, we do not which criteria were used to re-edit the Notebooks, which were originally edited by Adolf Frise. The German Edition has one Volume of Diaries = 1,000 pages and one Volume of Notes and Indices = 1,500, pages, making it useful for scholarly research, to look up subjects, names and places, and most fascinating Musil's sources. Still the English edition is of great interest to those unaquainted with Musil.
