I'm glad I checked these tapes out and listened to them. If I would have started reading the book, I doubt I would have finished it. What a great rags-to-riches story. Bobby Unser has lived quite a life. There is so much a person can learn about success by listening or reading about his adventures on, and off the track. My only complaint is that many, if not most of the stories were repeated many times. Other than that I highly recommend these tapes. I enjoyed them.

Bobby Unser was a very successful race car driver. This book shows that he always is a successful business man. Not being a racing fan, I wasn't too excited at first, but I enjoy reading motivational and self-improvement books, so I thought I'd check it out. Although I wouldn't say it turned me into a racing fan, I got to appreciate the scientific and sporting aspects of racing.

The advice given, although not earth-shattering, is both true and effective. For example, he talks about the desire to succeed and how this is a necessary "fuel" for winning. Many other self-development authors speak about this much as well. It is not anything new. However, He gives vivid examples from his racing career and from other anecdotes of friends and acquaintances. These examples are well-chosen because they are inspiring.

This is similar to other sections of his book. Bobby Unser seems to be very principle oriented as well as a man of integrity. He talk about instances where he could have turned his back on a commitment for monetary gain or to get on a better racing team (he made it seem like it was a somewhat common occurance in auto racing), but he stayed true to his commitment and it ended benefiting him in the end. This is refreshing considering some of the stereotypes of big business today where the search for a dollar seems to be the guiding principle sometimes.

I highly recommend this book. Even though it has a lot of auto racing stories, Unser tells them in a way that non-fans would really enjoy them and get motivation from their example.

Bobby's translation of what it takes to move from leading a race into the winner's circle to leading in business is an analogy well made in this book, particularly for all racing fans who find themselves wanting to gain a winning edge in life.

Paul Pease parlays Bobby Unser's winning focus in driving to be first for the checkered flag into a shared vision for his readers of what it takes to succeed in business. Bobby's lessons learned on the track and in between race days made him a part of one of America's most winning race families in a sport that has literally killed many who took on its challenges.

Bobby's experience in the business of racing and in the business of business in his twenty years of retirement, make him an excellent teacher of valuable lessons for the lay reader. The examples of lessons learned from his years of racing provide an entertaining and enlightening background for the reader to gain perspective on each message Bobby has to offer.

Bobby is clearly a monumental character both on the track and off. Being a willing teacher of what it takes to make a difference in business as in life makes this book very satisfying to the finish.

I found Bobby's book to be not only a fun read, but also packed with great motivational tips. Applying the tips to racing really hit home and was great reinforcement. It was nice to read about someone who actually practices what they preach, and can then explain it so that others can benefit.

Gun Owner's Common Sense.......2000-01-11

As a state certified Concealed Handgun Instructor in Texas, I am most indebted to Mr. Korwin and his research staff for the very thorough presentation of Texas and U.S. Federal legislation. Not only are the statutes presented in an orderly manner, there are ancillary laws that are thoroughly discussed -- both are presented in legalese and in layman's terms so that the unannoited may understand fully what is being laid out in the law.

I require that all my clients purchase his Texas Law book when they sign up for my course. It has proven to be immeasurably necessary to gaining a more complete understanding between what the written law states and what the courts choose to interpret from that law.

Mr. Korwin's book on Gun Laws of America will help you keep out of harms way from laws in states that do not have certification courses such as those available in Texas. Be very aware of Federal legislations that can destroy your freedom if you do not know of them. My best to all of you that wish to protect yourself and at the same time do not want to become an unwitting criminal in doing so. These books by Mr. Korwin, and those he recommends, are a must for gun owners across America. Have you ever wondered exactly what the Brady Bill does? Or how the Clinton gun ban law defines "assault weapon"? Answers to these questions, and many, many others can be found in a fine new book Gun Laws of America. Written by Alan Korwin and Michael P. Anthony, Gun Laws of America is a citizens' legal guide to every federal gun control law on the books today. Even gun law experts will be impressed with the breadth and scope of this book, which includes the first federal gun control which is still on the books (a 1894 statute authorizing the forfeiture of firearms used for illegal hunting in Yellowstone National Park). And then there's the first real "gun control" statute within the modern meaning of gun control: a 1927 statute outlawing mail-order handgun sales. The authors do more than just provide the full text of every federal gun control statute. At the beginning of each statute, they also provide a plain-English summary of the statute, so that a non-lawyer can get the gist of it. In addition to the well-known gun control laws, the authors also supply information about the huge variety of less-known laws. For example, did you know that if you use food stamps to buy firearms or ammunition, you will be permanently disqualified from the food stamp program? I had never realized that a legal resident alien who violates any firearm statute (including the most trivial municipal ordinance) can be deported for the violation. Handloaders and other folks who purchase gunpowder will be interested in federal statutes involving explosives. Did you know that the Secretary of the Treasury (who oversees the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms) has the authority to enter onto and investigate any site where an explosion has occurred? And of course there is the heart of the federal gun control laws: sections 921 through 930 of volume 18 of the United States Code. This law came into being as the Gun Control Act of 1968. Having been modified by the Firearms Owners Protection Act (1986), the Brady Act (1993), and the Clinton Crime Bill (1994), the federal gun statutes are now quite complex, with cross-references piling up one on the other. The turn of the millennium from the twentieth to the twenty-first century provides an occasion to review our understanding of a biological process, biological nitrogen fixation, that is of prime importance for the continued survival of mankind. This process has provided a basis for maintaining soil fertility since the beginning of organised agriculture, yet its very existence was confirmed only just over a century ago. In the intervening years, an enormous intellectual effort has dispersed much of the mystery surrounding biological nitrogen fixation. Biological fixation is widely exploited in agriculture, as are nitrogen fertilisers prepared for the last hundred years under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. However, despite all our efforts, the fundamental nature of the reactions involved at the heart of the biological process remain unknown.

This book aims to describe what we have learned in the last one hundred years or so about biological nitrogen fixation, about what its chemistry appears to be, and how it is applied in agriculture. This ambitious objective has not been attempted recently. The Pacific coast, from southcentral Alaska to Oregon's Cape Blanco, was uncharted until the Spanish and English explorations of the 1770s. Yet, when tectonic plates suddenly shifted there in 1700, a train of ocean waves -- a tsunami -- sped across the Pacific Ocean. Fascinating detective work eccentrically presented.......2006-02-16

On January 26, 1700, a tsunami struck eastern Japan. Because they had experienced no preceding earthquake to explain the wave, contemporary Japanese writers recorded the event as an "orphan tsunami." Almost three centuries later, scientists in the western United States and Canada uncovered evidence of a massive earthquake (more or less a 9 on the modern scale) having occurred here at about that same time. This book presents the evidence for naming that quake the "parent" of the orphan tsunami, and also draws some conclusions about what an earthquake of that size might mean for 21st-century Cascadia.

There's an awful lot packed into this small book, and it's a fine example of how earth sciences, history, and other disciplines can work together to break new ground (so to speak) in our understanding of the past. But the way it's all presented in these pages? Oy. It kind of reminded me of the stereotypical mad scientist: you know he's a genius, but as he rushes around his lab, talking really quickly, pulling up charts and graphs and drawing on the chalkboard to prove his theories, all you can think is, "this guy is nuts."

In this case, the authors and their layout artists really went wild. From beginning to end, the book is a riot of old maps and new photos, illustrations, excerpts from Japanese and American diaries and records, line-by-line translations of Japanese reports, different-colored text blocks for sidebar articles, big two-paragraph-long photo captions, little illustrations of tectonic forces at work, screenshots from computer programs, and a lot more, all jumbled together. Although the information is interesting, I found sorting out the visual presentation tiring at times. Moreover, each two-page spread is like its own mini-chapter, with its own headline and point it's attempting to make. It is an innovative way to present scientific information (at least, I can't think of any book quite like it), but I'm not sure the method is quite perfected yet.

Still, I'm a non-scientist and I found it worth the effort to read this. And as someone living in the Cascadian earthquake region, it had more than a little personal relevance too.

A welcome addition to any collection.......2006-02-02

This depiction of an orphan tsunami that battered the eastern coast of Japan in 1700 combines colorful imagery with scientific research to infer an account of what happened three hundred years ago. Japanese and American diaries, oral traditions, and ancient maps are combined with more recent photographs, figures and statistical data to support geological evidence found both in North America and Japan. The conclusion reveals an earthquake in the Cascadia Range of North America (estimated magnitude= 8.7 - 9.2) that generated waves which destroyed homes and caused a shipwreck and flooding over 7,000 kilometers away. The book features a table of contents in English and Japanese, author biographies, references, an index, and interpretations of Japanese language and writings used during the research. The artistry of the publication compliments the contents, and anyone with a curiosity for the earth sciences, global history, or cross-cultural studies will be intrigued by this portrayal of a significant natural disaster.
