    Winning the Innovation Game
    by Robert Tucker & Denis Waitley

    How to Profit from Today's Rapid Changes
    by Robert Tucker

    Innovative Secrets of Success
    by Robert Tucker & Denis Waitley

    During the late eighties/early nineties, while pursuing my personal interests in understanding 'entrepreneurial opportunity search & recognition' skills, I came across three wonderful books. Two were entitled, 'Opportunities: A Handbook for Opportunity Search' by Edward de Bono, & 'The Innovation Formula' by Michel Robert.

    The remaining third book was 'Winning the Innovation Game' by Robert Tucker & Denis Waitley. During the period, both authors were well-known thought leaders, with the former in 'innovation circles' & the latter in 'peak performance.'

    'Winning the Innovation Game' captured the pioneering work of the principal author, who had interviewed more than fifty successful & innovative executives, entrepreneurs & financiers during

    the eighties. Their 'innovative secrets of success' were sprinkled generously throughout the book, arranged with the following layout of chapters:

    - The Innovator Defined;
    - Winning Strategy;
    - Innovation Self-Inventory;
    - Becoming Your Own Trend Spotter;
    - Improving Quality of Your Thinking;
    - Proven Strategies for Working with Ideas;
    - Tapping the Power of Your Informed Intuition;
    - Finding Innovative Opportunities of Your Own;
    - Discovering Your Breakthrough Idea;
    - Building Your Breakthrough Idea;
    - Elements of Risk Taking;
    - Building Your Team;
    - Staying on the Game;

    I reckon the most exciting & valuable aspects of the author's interview results in the book were the following revelations:

    - how to spot changes & trends before your competitors do;
    - how to analyze trends & format strategies to profit from them;
    - how to develop your own "future scan system" to keep you from missing out on important developments;
    - how to distinguish between passing fads & the kind of changes that will reshape the marketplace;

    I have also enjoyed exploring the self-questioning checklist in one of the chapters, which I would like to reproduce as follows:

    - what do I really enjoy doing that I'd like to do more of?
    - where's the niche that hasn't been developed?
    - how can I position myself in a way that is different?
    - how can I make a living from doing what to one is fun, challenging & never boring?
    - what might my customer group want if it were available?
    - what can I offer they (the competitors) aren't offering?
    - what would make this process or procedure more convenient?
    - where is the market inefficiency?
    - what's next for me, inc?
    - What would people pay for that isn't available yet?
    - how can I do this less expensively?
    - how can I add value to the service or product I now produce?

    The other titles I have listed above are basically abridged audio versions of the book.

    'How to Profit from Today's Rapid Changes' was published in March 1988 by Simon & Schuster, while the other was published in March 1989 by Nightingale-Conant. I believe the audio versions are still available for download from online stores like audible &/or or learnoutloud websites.

    Although many of the stuff in the three titles were produced prior to the internet era, most of the strategies revealed in the book were pretty generic & could be applicable in today's context.

    In comparison with 'Opportunities' & 'The Innovation Formula' which are more intellectually intense, content-wise, (& which are also written by more established authors), this book has a slight dose of a broad brush. Nevertheless, there are still many valuable expert tips for readers from this book.

    Like I have often said in my many reviews, good books on 'entrepreneurial opportunity search & recognition' skills are rare. 'Winning the Innovation Game' is therefore a real gem.

    [I recommend readers to read also Robert Tucker's 'Driving Growth through Innovation' & Denis Waitley's 'Empires of the Mind: Lessons to Lead & Succeed in a Knowledge-based World.']

    5 out of 5 stars Become an innovator, not an imitator.......2004-06-21

    One of the problems in business, even today is that so many people are playing the game called, follow the follower. Essentially you have one person playing the Pied Piper and and everybodyelse following like kids and mice.

    This great book by Dr. Denis Waitley and Robert Tucker will show you how to become an innovator, not an imitator ... an indispensable guide to winning big at life.

    5 out of 5 stars A classic in business books-Think like an innovator.......2004-06-17

    I bought this book by Dr. Denis Waitley and Robert B. Tucker largely because it was so positively recommended by Tom Peters.
    And I wasn't dissappointed.

    Shortly after reading this book, I potted a trend that made me a ton of money. This book was one of the first, perhaps even the first book, to challenge people to come out of the box---to think out of the box, be creative, become a trend spotter, build a teamof supporters and how to be a prudent risk taker.

    All in all, a great book by these two gentlemen.

      Book Description

      Why do so few companies innovate successfully? For some firms, the problem stems from a haphazard approach: Executives hope that what's brewing in their labs will turn out to be what the market wants. Other organizations get stuck in the past--using outdated growth strategies, obsolete organizational structures, and mismatched resources in their attempts to create revolutionary offerings. The result? Rivals overtake them. To avoid this fate, consider the three strategies offered in this Harvard Business Review Article Collection: Craft your innovation game plan--stipulating your target markets and success criteria. Establish an organizational structure--spin-off, new internal group, new acquisition--that will create the breathing room your innovation needs to succeed. Insist on seeing early profits before investing significantly in the project. Gather the resources and capabilities required to nurture your project--including people, technologies, and product designs, as well as brands, customer and supplier relationships, and decision-making protocols. Innovation is never easy. But by applying the guidelines laid out in this collection, you will pull ahead of rivals--and perhaps even remake your industry.

      4 out of 5 stars Sound coverage of basic.......2003-11-03

      This is an overview of the issues in building business success, with a focus on human resource and knowledge management issues. It provides breadth rather than depth of coverage and is set out as a series of issues which require attention rather than providing an understanding of the processes needed to bring about systemic and continuing change.

      The 16 chapters are arranged in three parts: Opening Hearts and Minds; Growing Competitive Advantage; Ensuring Lasting Success. Each chapter gives an overview of an issue area (e.g. recruitment and retention, managing intellectual property) and summarizes key actions needed to bring about success in that area. The presentation of each area is direct and straightforward, and illustrated with useful examples.

      To use a cooking metaphor, it is nearer to a list of ingredients and how to prepare each, than a full recipe for organizational success. Selecting the ingredients and handling each well is necessary, but not sufficient to produce a delicious end-product. This is in contrast to Sydänmaanlakka: An Intelligent Organization, which takes the opposite approach of focusing strongly on the recipe, while treating the preparation of some of the ingredients rather more impressionistically.

              One of the things that attracts some people to lawyers and repels the rest of us is their ability to see and create loopholes. If the law is an ass, it is a very clever one. This book, by a University of Pennsylvania law professor, investigates the loophole phenomenon to a fare-thee-well. Want to use damaging information about a competitor to keep her away from an interview for a job you're both vying for, but don't want to violate the extortion statutes? Then see p. 2. Mad enough at your son to want to burn his house down with him in it but don't want to get convicted of first-degree murder? The recipe for that is on p. 38. Katz serves up a rich variety of examples and their variations to arrive at a general theory of what lawyers are doing when they -- legally -- walk their clients around a law. Truth be told though, the examples are a lot more compelling than the theory.

              Book Description

              In Ill-Gotten Gains, Leo Katz describes the underlying principles that not only guide the law but also moral decisions. Mixing wit with insight, anecdotes with analysis, Katz uncovers what is really at stake in crimes such as insider trading, blackmail, and plagiarism. With its startling conclusions and myriad twists, this book will fascinate all those intrigued by the perplexing relationship between morality and law.

              "An ambitious and well-written book of legal and moral theory to overthrow both utilitarianism and its cousin, the economic approach to law."—Richard A. Posner, New Republic

              "A good, well-written book full of interesting examples."—Library Journal

              "[An] elegant defense of circumvention and subterfuge . . . a heroically counterintuitive book."—Malcolm Gladwell, New Yorker

              Customer Reviews:

              5 out of 5 stars I like the way he thinks.......2001-07-23

              I'm turning into quite a fan of Leo Katz. I was so impressed by his _Bad Acts and Guilty Minds_ that I picked this one up almost at once. And it's just as good.

              This time around, Katz's plan is to deal with what he calls "three related mysteries": the moral problem of "avoision" (i.e., what counts as morally bad evasion and what merely as legitimate avoidance); the moral nature of e.g. blackmail and insider trading (i.e., what, if anything, justifies our all but universal moral intuitions that these and other similar acts are genuinely wrong); and the problem of "undeserved glory" (and what's wrong with appropriating someone else's fame).

              I won't try to spell out Katz's examples and arguments under each of these headings, for I could not do so if I tried: his discussions are very well organized, but they pass from one subtopic to another with such rapidity and ease that I would have a hard time deciding just what to select. In general I shall say only that even where I disagree with him (as I sometimes do), his lively and provocative analysis is a sheer joy to read.

              His most prominent theme is also one of which I heartily approve. There are some lawyers, philosophers, and especially economists who think it is possible to be both a libertarian and a utilitarian. Katz forcefully disagrees (as do I). And one purpose of this volume is to hammer that point home.

              Himself apparently a libertarian, Katz argues repeatedly and at length that libertarianism requires a deontological foundation; utilitarianism is simply inadequate in every respect. Along the way he also mounts a striking _deontological_ defense of the role of the attorney (in helping clients to avoid malignant moral outrages by "capitalizing on the deontological properties of legal rules," p. 131; you'll have to read the book to find out just what this means). And in one brief passage that one could wish were longer, he follows Amartya Sen to a striking conclusion: libertarianism is _also_ incompatible with complete freedom of contract. As in his earlier book, Katz's own outlook seems to be a sort of self-critical intuitionism along the lines of Judith Jarvis Thomson (whose "trolley problem" also gets a further workout here).

              I wrote in my review of Katz's previous book that it was all but unique. I am happy to say that isn't entirely so; this book is a lot like it. Highly recommended.

                      The consequences of changes in the natural environment are in many cases gendered. Relations between gender, land use and the management of the environment have so far been approached mostly from a philosophical or more theoretical point of view. This boo

                        Book Description

                        There is often confusion over the meaning and usage of terms such as efficiency, economy, effectiveness, optimization, and perfection in biology. This book defines and discusses these concepts within a broad evolutionary perspective and considers how evolutionary pressures can affect the economy and efficiency of animals. Chapters consider biomaterials, skeletal systems, muscular function, aquatic and terrestrial locomotion, and cardiovascular systems. The result is a book of interest to all biologists, particularly those working in the field of comparative physiology and evolutionary biology.

                        Book Description

                        Strategies for Teaching Strings is an essential guide for prospective, novice, and experienced string teachers. Acclaimed instructors Donald L. Hamann and Robert Gillespie share their years of experience, providing readers with all the information and skills necessary to teach string instruments in schools and to develop a successful school orchestra program. Based on national standards for teaching strings and orchestra, the text begins by introducing the string instrument family and presenting an overview of the school orchestra program. Subsequent chapters--divided into three levels of string competency corresponding to elementary, middle, and high school skills--cover performance goals and objectives, strategies for teaching technical and performance skills, and solutions to common playing problems for each ability level. Rehearsal planning and preparation, rehearsal techniques, practical approaches to teaching improvisation, student recruitment and retention, and choosing literature for the school orchestra are also covered. The book is enhanced by illustrations and photographs that demonstrate correct playing techniques and fingering positions. An appendix includes information about special pedagogical approaches and professional string associations. A full listing of the national content standards established by the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and by the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) appears in Chapter 6.

                        Undoubtedly the most important work on string teaching published in the past 20 years. Hamann and Gillespie give concise tips and comprehensive aid to the teacher of the string orchestra class. Covering beginner to advanced, the work is thorough and will continue to be useful for years to come. As a former Don Hamann student, I can say the only thing better is a class from the authors!

                        Book Description

                        Unmatched in its coverage of the topic, the first edition of GENERALIZED VECTOR AND DYADIC ANALYSIS helped revolutionize the treatment of boundary-value problems, establishing itself as a classic in the field. This expanded, revised edition is the most comprehensive book available on vector analysis founded upon the new method symbolic vector. GENERALIZED VECTOR AND DYADIC ANALYSIS presents a copious list of vector and dyadic identities, along with various forms of Green's theorems with derivations. In addition, this edition presents an historical study of the past mis-understandings and contradictions that have occurred in vector analysis presentations, furthering the reader's understanding of the subject.

                        If you ever came across the need of expressing vector operators in curvilinear coordinates, while writing numerical codes or solving PDEs in generalised coordinates, then you might have felt the need of a rigourous presentation of the subject.
                        Rigorous yet usable, I would say. This is not a book for pure mathematicians (the theorem you need is at pag. 435 consisting of one line saying the proof follows from the 2000 previous Lemma-theorem-corollary scattered all around...). The author has the physical problems well in his mind (he's Emeritus at Univ of Michigan, dept of Electrical Engineering) and makes frequent references to where in physics or geometry you will encounter such mathematical entities.
                        Chapter 8, devoted to the history of vector analysis, makes you clear why you haven't been able to find a neat rigorous presentation so far. This digression (I'm reluctant to use this expression for it's not a minor chapter in my opinion) gives you an even sharper feeling of what's the core of the matter by comparing critically different approaches.
                        The first introductory chapters on geometry, coordinate systems, dyadics provide a sound general background, presenting derivatives of vectors in generalised coordinate system from the beginning, resulting in a powerful and unifying exposition of the matter. All is extremely clear, a characteristic of the book in its whole.
                        The author always stress upon the transformation properties of the objects which have been defined, thus clarifying their meaning and mathematical character.
                        The appendix on vector analysis in the special theory of relativity is enjoyable and makes you clear how E and B can be treated as vectors even if they transform like the components of a tensor (OK, you already knew that, but you were using tensor analysis from the start, didn't you?).
                        There is much more in this book, which I would suggest to keep as a reference to any physicist, applied mathematician, biologist, engineer, numerical people and (even!) mathematician (developing communication skills...). First years students, which are always a bit confused on why one should use vectors at all and having accepted that think that everything is a vector, which is not, should definitely start with this book. Next time I will be asked to teach anything related to mechanics, I will adopt this book for the fundamental mathematics (but also check the excellent Biscari-Poggi-Virga Mechanics Notebook, 1999 Liguori ed. Napoli (IT) ).
                        It's also an excellent way to approach what you want next, which is likely to be tensor analysis which this book, unfortunately, cannot cover (can you hear me, Professor Tai?...).
